Questions & Answers about Zie je deze map? Het is belangrijk dat je de bestanden hierin opslaat.
Why do we use hierin instead of literally translating 'in this'?
In Dutch, when you combine a preposition (like in) with 'this' or 'that' to refer to a thing, you cannot say in dit or in deze. Instead, you replace 'this' with hier (here) and attach the preposition to the end. So, 'in this' becomes hierin (literally 'here-in').
Why is the verb opslaat at the very end of the sentence?
The word dat (that) introduces a subordinate clause, which is a dependent part of the sentence. In Dutch subordinate clauses, the working verb is always pushed to the very end.
Isn't opslaan (to save) a separable verb? Why isn't it split up here?
You are right, opslaan is a separable verb (op + slaan). Normally, it splits up (for example: ik sla het op). However, because the dat clause pushes the verb to the end of the sentence, the prefix and the verb meet at the end and are glued back together into a single word: opslaat.
Why do we say deze map and not dit map?
The word map (folder) is a de-word (de map). When you want to say 'this' for a de-word, you always use deze. You only use dit for het-words.
