Descobrir

Descobrir means "to discover" and, just as often in everyday speech, "to find out." It belongs to the same family as cobrir (to cover) and shares two irregularities: an o → u stem change in the first-person singular present (and the whole present subjunctive), and an irregular past participle descoberto (not "descobrido"). Everything else follows the regular -ir pattern. The stem change is the same one you meet in dormir (durmo) and cobrir (cubro): the stressed o of the stem closes to u in exactly the forms where the stem carries the stress with no helping vowel.

Meanings and uses

  • to discover (something new): a place, a fact, a cure, a talent.
  • to find out / learn (a piece of information): descobri que ele mentiu (I found out he lied).
  • to uncover / unveil: literally to take a cover off, though for the everyday "uncover the pot" Brazilians more often say destampar.
💡
For "I found out that…" BR uses descobrir que + indicative: Descobri que a loja fechou. English speakers sometimes reach for "saber," but saber is the resulting state ("to know"), while descobrir is the moment of finding out. Descobri = the discovery happened; sabia = I already knew.

The stem change: o → u

In Portuguese, certain -ir verbs whose stem vowel is o raise it to u when the stress falls on that vowel and there is no "buffer." That happens in the first-person singular present (descubro) and throughout the present subjunctive (descubra…). When the stress moves to the ending — as in descobre, descobrimos, descobri — the o stays. Compare the parallel verbs:

💡
In casual speech the bare present-indicative descobre works as a command: Descobre quanto custa e me avisa ("Find out how much it costs and let me know"). The prescribed written imperative for você is descubra.

Descubra o que aconteceu antes de tirar conclusões.

Find out what happened before jumping to conclusions.

Non-finite forms

The participle is irregular: descoberto, never "descobrido." Unlike abrir/aberto, descobrir has only this one participle (no regular alternative). As an adjective it agrees: descoberto, descoberta, descobertos, descobertas — and note the related noun (o) descobrimento ("the discovery," as in o Descobrimento do Brasil).

Common Mistakes

❌ Eu descobro a verdade rápido.

Incorrect — the eu-form raises the vowel to u: 'descubro'.

✅ Eu descubro a verdade rápido.

I find out the truth quickly.

❌ A vacina foi descobrida em 2020.

Incorrect — the participle is descoberto, never 'descobrido'.

✅ A vacina foi descoberta em 2020.

The vaccine was discovered in 2020.

❌ Espero que ele descobra a tempo.

Incorrect — the present subjunctive is built on the eu-stem, so it keeps the u: 'descubra'.

✅ Espero que ele descubra a tempo.

I hope he finds out in time.

❌ Eu já descobria que ele tinha mentido.

Wrong tense — for a one-time discovery use the preterite 'descobri', not the imperfect.

✅ Eu já tinha descoberto que ele mentiu.

I had already found out that he lied.

Key Takeaways

  • Descobrir has an o → u stem change in the eu present (descubro) and the entire present subjunctive (descubra…).
  • Everywhere else the stem keeps o: descobre, descobrimos, descobri, descobria, descobrisse, descobrir.
  • The past participle is irregular: descoberto, used in perfect tenses, the passive, and as an agreeing adjective.
  • Use descobrir for the moment of finding out; reserve saber for the resulting state of knowing.
