Comprar

Comprar means to buy or to purchase. It is a completely regular -ar verb with no stem changes and no spelling tricks — the p stays the same in front of every vowel, so unlike começar there is nothing to watch out for in the conjugation itself. The interesting part of comprar is its syntax: which prepositions it does and does not take. This page covers the clean -ar paradigm and then the buying-from / buying-for distinctions that trip up English speakers.

A clean -ar verb

Comprar follows the same template as falar, estudar, and amar: stem compr- plus the standard -ar endings. There is nothing irregular to memorize. Because the stem ends in a consonant cluster (-mpr-), it never collides with the endings, so every form is straightforward.

💡
If you can conjugate comprar, you can conjugate any "boring" regular -ar verb — just swap the stem. The endings never change.

Prepositions: the syntax of buying

This is where comprar diverges from English expectations.

Direct object — no preposition. The thing you buy is a plain direct object; you do not put any word before it (no equivalent of "buy of" or "buy up"). English speakers sometimes try to insert a particle — don't.

Comprei um celular novo ontem.

I bought a new cell phone yesterday.

comprar de alguémbuy from someone. The source/seller takes de.

Comprei essa bicicleta de um vizinho.

I bought this bike from a neighbor.

comprar para alguémbuy for someone (the beneficiary). You can also use the indirect-object pronoun: comprar algo para alguém.

Comprei um presente para a minha mãe.

I bought a present for my mom.

comprar por (um valor)buy for (a price). To state how much you paid, use por.

Comprei o sofá por trezentos reais num bazar.

I bought the sofa for three hundred reais at a rummage sale.

💡
Notice the two senses of English "for": para = for whom (the beneficiary), por = for how much (the price). Portuguese keeps these apart, which English collapses into one word.

A figurative use worth knowing: comprar briga (literally "buy a fight") means to pick a fight / look for trouble, and comprar uma ideia means to buy into an ideaboth parallel English idioms closely. (informal)

Não quero comprar briga com o síndico.

I don't want to pick a fight with the building manager.

Common Mistakes

❌ Comprei de um carro.

Incorrect — the thing bought takes no preposition; de marks the seller, not the object.

✅ Comprei um carro.

I bought a car.

❌ Comprei o livro por minha irmã.

Incorrect — por states a price; for a beneficiary use para.

✅ Comprei o livro para a minha irmã.

I bought the book for my sister.

❌ Eu comprei → 'comprava' (for a single completed purchase).

Incorrect — a one-time completed action takes the preterite comprei, not the imperfect.

✅ Ontem eu comprei o ingresso.

Yesterday I bought the ticket.

❌ Quero que você compra leite.

Incorrect — after quero que you need the subjunctive compre.

✅ Quero que você compre leite.

I want you to buy milk.

❌ Comprei isso de duzentos reais.

Incorrect — de marks the seller; to state the price use por.

✅ Comprei isso por duzentos reais.

I bought this for two hundred reais.
