B2 control is the ability to preserve who did what to whom while changing how a text sounds. A formal report, a colleague's message, a news lead, and a regionally colored conversation may organize reference and stance differently; advancement does not mean replacing all of them with uniformly formal vocabulary.
This route assumes the B1 path, including meN- allomorphy, -kan/-i foundations, object relatives, aspect scope, clause combining, and reported speech. Its CEFR label is a practical staging decision inside this guide, not an official guarantee. The milestones test deliberate choices across varieties rather than knowledge of rare forms.
Entry diagnostic
You are ready when you can explain why the following clauses select different pivots and registers:
Tim lapangan menyerahkan temuan awal kepada koordinator tadi malam.
The field team handed the preliminary findings to the coordinator last night.
Temuan awal itu tadi malam kami serahkan langsung kepada koordinator.
Those preliminary findings, we handed directly to the coordinator last night.
Temuan awal telah diserahkan kepada koordinator untuk ditelaah lebih lanjut.
The preliminary findings have been submitted to the coordinator for further review. (formal)
If the difference feels like a vocabulary substitution rather than a change in information structure and institutional stance, review B1 voice choice first.
Cluster 1: Consolidate valency before pursuing stylistic range
Follow the exact slugs in order:
- syntax/transitivity
- syntax/ditransitives
- syntax/valency-change
- verbs-voice/kan-vs-i/arguments
- verbs-voice/kan-vs-i/choice
- verbs-voice/kan-vs-i/advanced
- verbs-voice/system/arguments
- verbs-voice/system/choice
Begin with argument counts and roles. Only then review how derivation and voice promote, demote, or reframe those arguments. The advanced -kan/-i page belongs after the contrast pages because lexical restrictions make sense only against a stable productive pattern.
Milestone 1
Take five three-participant eventsβgiving, sending, showing, filling, and supplyingβand produce actor-voice, object-voice, and di- passive versions where the lexical verb permits them. Mark every participant's role.
Nadia menunjukkan rancangan baru itu kepada kepala bagian.
Nadia showed the new design to the department head.
Rancangan baru itu Nadia tunjukkan kepada kepala bagian sebelum rapat.
The new design, Nadia showed to the department head before the meeting.
Gudang tersebut dipasok bahan baku oleh tiga perusahaan lokal.
That warehouse is supplied with raw materials by three local companies.
Cluster 2: Build complex relatives without losing the missing role
- syntax/relative-overview
- syntax/object-relatives
- syntax/oblique-relatives
- syntax/information-structure
- syntax/extraction
Object relatives are reviewed before oblique relatives because they establish how pivot choice licenses a gap. Information structure then explains why a speaker fronts or extracts material at all. Do not copy English the office where I work mechanically into a di mana relative when Indonesian has a more appropriate noun-plus-relative strategy.
Milestone 2
Write a six-sentence profile containing two object relatives and two relative constructions whose head corresponds to a locative, instrumental, or comitative role. Make every missing participant recoverable.
Lembaga yang sedang kami teliti didirikan oleh para guru desa.
The institution we are studying was founded by village teachers.
Kota tempat ia pertama kali bekerja kini menjadi pusat industri.
The city where she first worked has now become an industrial center.
Itulah rekan yang dengannya kami menyusun laporan awal.
That is the colleague with whom we prepared the preliminary report. (formal)
Cluster 3: Express unreal conditions and calibrated stance
- complex/conditionals
- complex/counterfactuals
- adverbs/stance
- adverbs/viewpoint
- adverbs/scope
- discourse-markers/stance
Ordinary conditions precede counterfactuals. Indonesian does not encode unreality through the English past-perfect template alone; temporal markers, seandainya/kalau, result clauses, and context cooperate. Stance and scope then let you distinguish the proposition from your degree or source of commitment.
Milestone 3
Discuss an abandoned plan from two viewpoints. State what really happened, what might have happened under another condition, and whose assessment each claim represents.
Seandainya izin itu turun lebih awal, pameran tersebut dapat dibuka pada bulan Juni.
Had the permit arrived earlier, the exhibition could have opened in June.
Menurut tim kurator, penundaan itu justru memberi waktu untuk memperbaiki katalog.
In the curatorial team's view, the delay actually provided time to improve the catalog.
Kemungkinan besar, hanya ruang utama yang akan direnovasi tahun ini.
Most likely, only the main hall will be renovated this year.
Cluster 4: Maintain reference chains across paragraphs
Review -nya and omission before the chain page. A long text fails when successive dia, ia, -nya, zero subjects, and repeated nouns no longer identify the same participant. Topic and focus pages come afterward because reference is the material those structures rearrange.
Milestone 4
Write two paragraphs about three people and one organization. On revision, underline every referring expression and verify that no chain changes owner accidentally.
Laras menemui ketua koperasi setelah kantornya tutup. Ia kemudian mengirim hasil wawancara kepada editornya.
Laras met the cooperative chair after the office closed. She then sent the interview results to her editor.
Koperasi itu, anggotanya sudah mencapai dua ribu orang; yang masih terbatas justru ruang penyimpanannya.
As for the cooperative, its membership has reached two thousand; what remains limited is its storage space.
Cluster 5: Rewrite deliberately between formal and colloquial Indonesian
- register/overview
- register/formal-written
- register/careful-spoken
- register/casual-spoken
- register/register-editing
The overview establishes dimensions of variation before you study named registers. The editing page comes last: revision requires a target audience, and no form is globally βmore advanced.β Casual Indonesian is systematic, while formal prose can be concise rather than bureaucratic.
Milestone 5
Rewrite the same scheduling message for a close colleague, a meeting, and an official email. Preserve the event and participant roles while changing address terms, particles, reductions, and clause packaging.
Gue belum sempat cek berkasnya; besok pagi gue kabarin, ya.
I haven't had a chance to check the file; I'll let you know tomorrow morning. (informal, Jakarta-associated)
Saya belum sempat memeriksa berkasnya; besok pagi saya beri kabar.
I haven't had a chance to check the file; I'll let you know tomorrow morning. (careful spoken)
Berkas tersebut belum dapat saya periksa; hasil pemeriksaan akan saya sampaikan besok pagi.
I have not yet been able to examine the file; I will communicate the result tomorrow morning. (formal written)
Cluster 6: Calibrate news, academic introductions, and regional variation
- register/journalistic
- texts/news
- register/academic
- texts/abstract
- regional/overview
- regional/local-influence
- regional/intelligibility
Read the register page before its annotated text. News foregrounds information differently from an academic introduction, and neither is a universally superior model for conversation. The regional sequence begins with an overview, then examines contact influence, and ends with practical intelligibility. Your first goal is calibrated recognition, not imitation of a local identity you do not inhabit.
Milestone 6
Annotate a short news lead and an abstract introduction for voice, reference, stance, and density. Then listen to two regional speakers and separate features you can confidently identify from features you merely notice.
Pemerintah daerah membuka dua posko baru setelah banjir merendam empat kecamatan.
The regional government opened two new emergency posts after flooding inundated four districts. (journalistic)
Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi faktor yang memengaruhi pilihan bahasa mahasiswa.
This study aims to identify factors that influence university students' language choice. (academic)
Bentuk yang terdengar regional belum tentu menghambat pemahaman antarpembicara.
A form that sounds regional does not necessarily impede understanding between speakers.
Two review loops
Review loop 1: valency β relative gap β reference chain
After Cluster 4, revisit steps 1β13. Take three sentences from your profile, label each verb's arguments, justify the relative-clause gap, and then trace the referent through the next two sentences.
Program yang dirancang tim itu kemudian mereka tawarkan kepada sekolah-sekolah pesisir.
They then offered the program that the team had designed to coastal schools.
Review loop 2: stance β register β variety
After Cluster 6, revisit steps 16β19 and 25β36. Rewrite one claim for a news report, an academic introduction, and a casual discussion, then explain which differences are genre-driven and which are regional.
Diduga, perubahan itu berkaitan dengan meningkatnya biaya angkutan.
The change is thought to be related to rising transportation costs. (journalistic/formal)
Minimum production and reception goals
Before the C1 path:
- Write a coherent 400-word account with controlled valency, two complex relatives, stable reference chains, and explicit stance.
- Produce formal, careful-spoken, and casual versions of one message without changing its factual roles.
- Summarize a news text and an academic introduction while preserving attribution and uncertainty.
- Follow standard Indonesian spoken with unfamiliar regional influence, identifying uncertainty rather than declaring every unfamiliar feature βwrong.β
Common Mistakes
Equating advanced language with maximum formality
β Saya selalu menggunakan sapaan Anda untuk teman dekat agar terdengar lebih mahir.
Poor strategy β Anda can create inappropriate distance with a close friend.
β Saat berbicara dengan teman dekat, saya memilih sapaan yang sesuai dengan hubungan kami, bukan sapaan yang paling resmi.
When speaking with a close friend, I choose an address form suited to our relationship, not the most official one.
Changing register while accidentally changing argument structure
β Versi formalnya: Laporan itu mengirim kepada direktur.
Incorrect β the report has accidentally become the actor of send.
β Versi formalnya: Laporan itu telah dikirim kepada direktur.
Formal version: The report has been sent to the director.
Using di mana as a universal English-style relative marker
β Kantor di mana saya bekerja pindah ke gedung baru.
Nonpreferred in careful standard prose for this ordinary locative relation.
β Kantor tempat saya bekerja pindah ke gedung baru bulan lalu.
The office where I work moved to a new building last month.
Losing the owner of -nya across a chain
β Mira menemui Santi setelah kantornya tutup, tetapi pemilik kantor tidak jelas.
Ambiguous β the possessor of kantornya cannot be recovered securely.
β Setelah kantor Santi tutup, Mira menemuinya di kafe dekat stasiun.
After Santi's office closed, Mira met her at the cafΓ© near the station.
Treating a regional form as either universal or defective
β Bentuk ini dipakai seorang penutur Medan, jadi semua orang Indonesia pasti memakainya.
Invalid generalization β one occurrence cannot establish nationwide distribution.
β Saya mencatat bentuk itu sebagai regional sampai distribusinya dapat dipastikan.
I record that form as regional until its distribution can be established.
Key Takeaways
- B2 precision begins with argument structure and survives every register shift.
- Complex relatives and reference chains must keep the missing or repeated participant recoverable.
- Formal, colloquial, journalistic, academic, and regional varieties serve different audiences and tasks.
- Advancement means calibrated choice, not uniformly formal vocabulary.
