B1 Path: Link Events and Manage Voice

B1 is not A2 with a longer list of verbs. It is the point where you must keep people and things recoverable across several clauses while deciding which participant each clause is about. meN- allomorphy, -kan and -i, object relatives, aspect markers, linkers, particles, and reported speech all contribute to that one discourse task.

This path assumes active control of the A2 route, especially basic actor voice, di- passive, object voice, yang subject relatives, and polite address. Its B1 label is a guide-specific progression rather than an official assessment. Use the production checks below to decide whether the material is usable.

Entry diagnostic

You should already be able to build a coherent everyday episode such as this:

Tadi pagi saya menerima pesan dari kurir yang membawa pesanan kantor.

This morning I received a message from the courier who was carrying the office order.

Paketnya belum datang, jadi nomor pesanannya saya kirim kepada petugas.

The package had not arrived, so I sent the order number to the representative.

Petugas itu meminta saya menunggu sampai alamatnya diperiksa.

The representative asked me to wait until the address was checked.

If you can parse these but cannot produce comparable links yourself, use them as the final A2 review before beginning.

Cluster 1: Make meN- formation predictable

Study the exact slugs in this order:

  1. word-formation/men/formation
  2. word-formation/men/meaning
  3. word-formation/men/usage
  4. common-mistakes/nasal-allomorphs
  5. verbs-voice/men/arguments
  6. verbs-voice/men/choice

Formation comes before argument structure, and argument structure before discourse choice. Learn nasal substitution by root class—tulis → menulis, pilih → memilih, kirim → mengirim, sapu → menyapu—not by guessing from the first letter of the finished word. Then connect the form to the actor-oriented clause it builds.

Milestone 1

Given ten familiar roots, form the expected actor-voice verb, identify any deleted initial consonant, and place five of the verbs in a connected workplace update.

Tim kami menyeleksi tiga calon lalu mengirim hasilnya kepada manajer.

Our team selected three candidates and then sent the results to the manager.

Saya mencatat perubahan itu sebelum menyusun jadwal baru.

I noted the change before drawing up a new schedule.

Cluster 2: Choose -kan and -i by participant structure

  1. word-formation/kan/formation
  2. word-formation/kan/meaning
  3. word-formation/i/formation
  4. word-formation/i/meaning
  5. verbs-voice/kan-vs-i/arguments
  6. choosing/kan-i
  7. common-mistakes/kan-i

Do not learn -kan and -i as interchangeable “transitive endings.” The important question is which participant becomes the primary object: something transferred or caused, a location affected, a recipient, or a repeated target. The choosing page is deliberately last because it assumes that both families and their argument patterns are already familiar.

Milestone 2

Produce six paired descriptions in which changing the suffix changes the object or construal. Explain the participant difference in plain English.

Petugas memasukkan berkas itu ke lemari besi.

The officer put the file into the safe.

Petugas mengisi lemari besi itu dengan berkas lama.

The officer filled the safe with old files.

Rina mengirimkan hasil pemeriksaan kepada dua cabang.

Rina sent the inspection results to two branches.

💡
At B1, a correct suffix is not enough. You should be able to point to the object and say why that participant—not another one—occupies the object position.

Cluster 3: Keep participants recoverable in relative clauses

  1. syntax/relative-overview
  2. syntax/subject-relatives
  3. verbs-voice/object-voice/overview
  4. syntax/object-relatives

Review subject relatives before object relatives. Indonesian readily relativizes the subject after yang; an understood object must first become the clause pivot, commonly through object voice. That is why object voice is a prerequisite rather than an optional style lesson.

Milestone 3

Identify a person by what they did and identify an object by what someone did to it. Produce at least four natural object relatives without inserting an English-style relative pronoun after yang.

Karyawan yang menangani keluhan itu sedang makan siang.

The employee who handles that complaint is having lunch.

Ini laporan yang kemarin kami bahas bersama direktur.

This is the report that we discussed with the director yesterday.

Orang yang ingin saya temui baru tiba dari Makassar.

The person I want to meet has just arrived from Makassar.

Cluster 4: Order aspect and connect clauses

  1. aspect-modality/time-reference
  2. aspect-modality/order
  3. adverbs/scope
  4. conjunctions/karena-sebab
  5. conjunctions/result
  6. conjunctions/condition
  7. conjunctions/before-after
  8. conjunctions/concession
  9. complex/clause-combining

First learn what aspect markers contribute and how their order affects scope. Then connect propositions with explicit causal, result, conditional, temporal, and concessive relations. The final clause-combining page asks you to select among those relations rather than merely attach one more conjunction.

Milestone 4

Explain a plan, an obstacle, and a result in six connected clauses. Keep sudah, belum, masih, and negation close to what they scope over.

Walaupun hujan belum berhenti, kami tetap berangkat setelah semua peserta datang.

Although the rain had not stopped, we still left after all participants arrived.

Jika jalan utama masih ditutup, sopir akan memilih rute yang sudah diperiksa.

If the main road is still closed, the driver will choose the route that has already been checked.

Rapat baru dimulai ketika listrik padam, sehingga pembahasan harus ditunda.

The meeting had only just started when the power went out, so the discussion had to be postponed.

Cluster 5: Add stance without losing register

  1. particles/kan
  2. particles/ya
  3. particles/sih
  4. particles/dong
  5. register/careful-spoken
  6. register/casual-spoken

Particles are not interchangeable translations of right, please, or though. They manage assumptions, insistence, and interpersonal stance. Study the careful/casual distinction immediately afterward so that recognition does not become indiscriminate production.

Milestone 5

Record two versions of the same request: one to a colleague you know and one in a careful meeting. Explain what changes in stance, not just vocabulary.

Kamu sudah simpan salinannya, kan? Kirim lagi, dong.

You saved a copy, right? Send it again, please. (informal)

Berkas itu sudah disimpan, ya? Mohon kirimkan kembali sebelum rapat.

The file has been saved, correct? Please send it again before the meeting. (careful)

Cluster 6: Report voices and structure a narrative

  1. complex/direct-quotation
  2. syntax/bahwa-complements
  3. complex/reported-speech
  4. discourse-markers/sequence
  5. discourse-markers/narrative
  6. complex/temporal
  7. texts/folktale

Direct quotation comes before reported speech so the boundary between a speaker's exact words and a narrator's reformulation stays visible. Clause sequencing and temporal relations then provide a structure for a full narrative. The annotated folktale is the integration task, not the place to learn each feature for the first time.

Milestone 6

Tell a three-minute story with an orientation, complication, response, and result. Include one direct quotation, one report with bahwa, two voice choices that keep the central participant recoverable, and at least four sequencing expressions.

Maya berkata, “Saya akan memeriksa pintunya,” lalu berjalan ke ruang belakang.

Maya said, “I'll check the door,” then walked to the back room.

Penjaga menjelaskan bahwa alarm itu sudah berbunyi sebelum mereka tiba.

The guard explained that the alarm had sounded before they arrived.

Kunci yang mereka cari akhirnya ditemukan di bawah meja resepsionis.

The key they were looking for was finally found under the reception desk.

Two review loops

Review loop 1: morphology → object → relative clause

After Cluster 3, revisit steps 1, 7–12, and 16. Choose four roots that allow -kan or -i, build the correct object frame, and then turn that object into the head of a relative clause.

Peta yang ditunjukkan pemandu kepada kami ternyata sudah usang.

The map the guide showed us turned out to be outdated.

Review loop 2: aspect → linker → reported viewpoint

After Cluster 6, revisit steps 18–26 before rewriting your narrative. Check whether each aspect marker scopes over the intended event and whether each linker states the real relation. Then report one character's view without confusing it with the narrator's assertion.

Dimas mengira bahwa keretanya sudah berangkat, padahal kereta itu masih menunggu di peron lain.

Dimas thought that his train had left, when in fact it was still waiting at another platform.

💡
When revising a narrative, draw a short participant chain in the margin. If a pronoun, omitted subject, or voice change makes the chain fork unexpectedly, repair the reference before polishing vocabulary.

Minimum production and reception goals

Before continuing to the B2 path:

  • Produce a 250-word narrative with stable reference, motivated voice choices, temporal links, and reported speech.
  • Explain the object difference in at least four -kan/-i pairs rather than reciting a suffix slogan.
  • Sustain a five-minute conversation using stance particles selectively and consistently with the relationship.
  • Follow the participant chain and event order in an unfamiliar B1 narrative without relying on past-tense endings that Indonesian does not have.

Sesudah saksi diperiksa, keterangan yang ia berikan kami bandingkan dengan rekaman kamera.

After the witness was questioned, we compared the statement she gave with the camera recording.

Common Mistakes

Memorizing finished meN- forms without nasal-substitution patterns

❌ Saya menulisnya sebagai mentulis karena akar katanya tulis.

Incorrect — initial t is deleted after the appropriate meN- allomorph.

✅ Saya menulis ringkasan itu setelah membaca semua catatan.

I wrote that summary after reading all the notes.

Treating -kan and -i as free variants

❌ Petugas memasuki kartu itu ke dalam mesin.

Incorrect for inserting a card — memasuki selects the place entered, not the item inserted.

✅ Petugas memasukkan kartu itu ke dalam mesin pembayaran.

The attendant inserted the card into the payment machine.

Relativizing an object with an actor-voice gap

❌ Ini usul yang mereka membahas kemarin sore.

Incorrect — the understood object cannot remain the object of actor-voice membahas in this relative.

✅ Ini usul yang mereka bahas kemarin sore.

This is the proposal that they discussed yesterday afternoon.

Stacking aspect markers without controlling scope

❌ Mereka belum sudah mulai memeriksa ruang kedua.

Incorrect — belum and sudah conflict in this unstructured sequence.

✅ Mereka baru mulai memeriksa ruang kedua setelah makan siang.

They only began checking the second room after lunch.

Mixing direct and reported-speech frames

❌ Sari mengatakan bahwa, “Saya sudah mengirim jawabannya.”

Incorrect mixed frame — bahwa does not introduce an exact direct quotation.

✅ Sari mengatakan bahwa ia sudah mengirim jawabannya.

Sari said that she had already sent the answer.

Key Takeaways

  • B1 control means choosing a clause pivot and preserving reference across connected events.
  • Formation precedes valency; valency precedes suffix and voice choice.
  • Aspect, linkers, and reported speech must represent the intended relations, not simply make a text longer.
  • Particles add stance only when their register and assumptions fit the interaction.
