meN-: Formation and Allomorphy

The label meN- represents one Indonesian prefix whose nasal changes to fit the beginning of its base. It is not a string that appears literally in a word. From baca Indonesian forms membaca; from tulis, menulis; from ambil, mengambil.

This page is about building and spelling those surface forms. The neighboring pages explain the prefix's meanings and its valency, lexicalization, and register. Abstract notation such as meN- + baca uses a hyphen for analysis; the actual word membaca is written solid under EYD V.

One template, several surface shapes

The capital N in meN- means “a nasal whose place is supplied by the next sound.” Before b, the nasal uses the lips and appears as m in mem-. Before d, it appears as n in men-. Before g or a vowel, it appears as ng in meng-. A root beginning s productively gives meny-.

Base beginningUsual surface patternExample

l, m, n, ny, ng, r, w, yme-lihat → melihat; rawat → merawat
many one-syllable basesmenge-cat → mengecat; cek → mengecek

The “surface pattern” column names a morphological boundary, not just the first letters of the finished word. Me- + masak becomes memasak because the m belongs to masak; this does not make its prefix mem-.

Saya membaca pesan itu sebelum berangkat.

I read that message before leaving.

Rina mencari kunci motornya sejak tadi.

Rina has been looking for her motorcycle key for a while.

Perawat merawat lukanya setiap pagi.

The nurse treats the wound every morning.

💡
The spelling is an articulatory map: the nasal moves toward the next consonant's place. Learn the pattern by sound class, not as an unrelated list of prefixes.

The required segmentation map

The following table keeps the base visible in the analysis but never restores a deleted consonant in the finished word. Strikethrough marks a root-initial consonant lost under productive attachment.

BaseAnalysisProcessSurface word
bacameN- + bacaN becomes m before b; b remainsmembaca
tulismeN- + tulisN becomes n; initial t is substitutedmenulis

pakaimeN- + pakaiN becomes m; initial p is substitutedmemakai

The last two rows are additional natural formations that demonstrate the productive pattern beyond the five core models.

Dia menulis alamat tujuan di bagian depan amplop.

She writes the destination address on the front of the envelope.

Pak Dedi menyapu teras setelah daun-daun kering berjatuhan.

Mr. Dedi sweeps the terrace after dry leaves fall.

Saya mengambil paket di meja resepsionis.

I pick up the package at the reception desk.

Mereka mengecat ruang tamu akhir pekan ini.

They are painting the living room this weekend.

Nisa memakai jas hujan karena langit mulai gelap.

Nisa is wearing a raincoat because the sky is getting dark.

Toko itu mengirim pesanan pada hari yang sama.

That shop sends orders on the same day.

The p, t, s, k substitution pattern

With many established native or fully integrated bases beginning in p, t, s, k, the voiceless consonant does not survive after productive meN- attachment. The homorganic nasal takes its place:

Initial base consonantResultModel
pmem- + base without ppilih → memilih
tmen- + base without ttutup → menutup
smeny- + base without ssewa → menyewa
kmeng- + base without kkunci → mengunci

Kami memilih meja dekat jendela.

We chose a table near the window.

Petugas menutup pintu sepuluh menit sebelum acara dimulai.

The staff member closes the door ten minutes before the event begins.

Mereka menyewa mobil selama tiga hari.

They are renting a car for three days.

Saya selalu mengunci pintu belakang sebelum tidur.

I always lock the back door before going to sleep.

The deleted consonant belongs in the dictionary base and in an analysis such as meN- + tulis. It does not belong in the surface word. Standard spellings are memilih, menulis, menyewa, mengunci, not mempilih, mentulis, mensyewa, or mengkunci.

Consonants that remain

Voiced stops and many other initial sounds remain after the matching allomorph. This produces a nasal-plus-consonant sequence in words such as membaca, mendengar, and menggali.

Saya mendengar pengumuman itu dari luar ruangan.

I heard that announcement from outside the room.

Warga menggali saluran kecil agar air cepat surut.

Residents are digging a small channel so the water recedes quickly.

Kami melihat lampu dapur masih menyala.

We saw that the kitchen light was still on.

Do not delete b from baca or g from gali. The productive substitution specifically targets many initial p, t, s, k bases, not every stop.

The menge- pattern for short bases

Many one-syllable bases take menge-, which keeps the base clearly pronounceable. This pattern is especially visible with short loans and work-related verbs.

Ayah mengecat pagar yang mulai berkarat.

Dad is painting the fence that has started to rust.

Saya mengecek jadwal sekali lagi sebelum memesan tiket.

I check the schedule one more time before booking the ticket.

Teknisi mengetes mikrofon sebelum acara.

The technician tests the microphone before the event.

Dalam gim itu, pemain mengebom markas lawan untuk membuka jalan.

In that game, players bomb the opponent's base to clear a path.

This is a genuine area learners must memorize word by word at the margins. “One syllable” is a strong productive cue, but borrowed bases, established spellings, and speaker conventions do not all fall into a perfectly mechanical system.

Loans, clusters, and lexical exceptions

Initial p, t, k often remains when it belongs to a consonant cluster in a loan: memproses, mentransfer, mengkritik. A few highly frequent words also preserve a consonant for lexical or morphological reasons, including mempunyai.

Staf sedang memproses permohonan yang masuk kemarin.

The staff is processing the application that arrived yesterday.

Saya mentransfer uang sewa setiap awal bulan.

I transfer the rent money at the beginning of every month.

Artikel itu mengkritik kebijakan yang kurang transparan.

The article criticizes a policy that is not sufficiently transparent.

Kami mempunyai waktu satu jam sebelum kereta berangkat.

We have one hour before the train departs.

These are not permission to keep p, t, s, k everywhere. Productive substitution remains the core pattern; established cluster and lexical forms must be learned from reliable usage.

💡
Predict with the productive rule, then verify loans and lexical exceptions. A good rule explains new formations, while a dictionary records where the lexicon has settled differently.

Which bases can take meN-?

MeN- forms verbs from many verbal bases and from licensed noun or adjective bases. Baca and ambil already name actions; cat supplies a substance in mengecat “apply paint”; kuning supplies a property in menguning “turn yellow.” But the prefix does not attach freely to every Indonesian noun or adjective.

Daun padi mulai menguning menjelang panen.

The rice leaves are beginning to turn yellow before harvest.

Mereka melaut sebelum matahari terbit.

They go out to sea before sunrise.

Both are established formations. A logically imaginable meaning is not enough to license a new word; later suffixes such as -kan or -i may also be required. This page does not predict those meanings or valency patterns.

Recovering the dictionary base

Dictionaries commonly connect a derived verb to its base, although a bilingual dictionary may display the surface verb as the main lookup form while KBBI-style entries group a family under the base. Search both forms when necessary: menulis and tulis, menyapu and sapu, mengirim and kirim.

Do not simply cut off the visible first syllable. From menulis, the base is tulis, not nulis; from menyapu, it is sapu, not yapu. Since substitution hides p, t, s, k, reverse analysis can produce more than one possibility. A dictionary is the final check.

Common Mistakes

1. Writing the abstract label literally

❌ Saya meN-baca berita itu setiap pagi.

Incorrect—meN- is an analytical label, not the spelling of a real word.

✅ Saya membaca berita itu setiap pagi.

I read the news every morning.

2. Preserving an initial t that undergoes substitution

❌ Dia mentulis nomor teleponnya di kertas kecil.

Incorrect—the initial t of tulis is absent after productive meN- attachment.

✅ Dia menulis nomor teleponnya di kertas kecil.

She writes her phone number on a small piece of paper.

3. Preserving an initial s after men-

❌ Ibu mensapu dapur setelah makan malam.

Incorrect—the standard surface form uses meny- and substitutes the initial s.

✅ Ibu menyapu dapur setelah makan malam.

Mom sweeps the kitchen after dinner.

4. Keeping k in a productive native pattern

❌ Toko itu mengkirim paket pada sore hari.

Incorrect—the initial k of kirim is substituted in the standard form.

✅ Toko itu mengirim paket pada sore hari.

That shop sends packages in the afternoon.

5. Treating a one-syllable base like an ordinary c-initial base

❌ Mereka mencat dinding kamar dengan warna putih.

Incorrect standard formation—cat takes the extended menge- pattern.

✅ Mereka mengecat dinding kamar dengan warna putih.

They are painting the bedroom wall white.

Key Takeaways

  • MeN- is an abstract prefix label; actual words use me-, mem-, men-, meny-, meng-, or menge- and are written solid.
  • The nasal matches the base's initial sound, while productive attachment commonly substitutes initial p, t, s, k.
  • Learn baca → membaca, tulis → menulis, sapu → menyapu, ambil → mengambil, and cat → mengecat as core models.
  • Loan clusters, short bases, and lexical exceptions make dictionary checking necessary at the edges.
  • Recover the base before analyzing the word; never restore a deleted consonant in surface spelling.
