Knowing that memper-...-kan is broadly causative does not tell you how to build a clause. Mempertemukan selects one participant as its object and introduces the other with dengan; mempersoalkan directly selects an issue; the contrasting mempersenjatai selects an equipped goal. This page covers those valency, lexical, and register choices; consult the formation and meaning pages for the neighboring questions.
Three families, three object frames
| Verb | Core frame | What follows the verb directly? |
|---|---|---|
| mempertemukan | causer + A + dengan B | one meeting participant |
| mempersoalkan | questioner + issue | the disputed issue |
| mempersenjatai | supplier + goal + dengan equipment | the person or group equipped |
Mediator mempertemukan warga dengan pengelola pabrik.
The mediator brings residents together with the factory management.
Warga mempersoalkan bau limbah dari pabrik tersebut.
Residents question the smell of waste from that factory.
Perusahaan mempersenjatai petugas keamanan dengan tongkat dan semprotan merica.
The company arms security officers with batons and pepper spray.
English speakers often expect a uniform “verb + object + to/with object” pattern. Indonesian lexical derivation decides which role becomes the direct object, so the frame must be learned with the verb.
Mempertemukan: participant structure
In the active clause, the causer is the subject. One meeting participant follows the verb directly, and the other normally follows dengan. A coordinated object can also package both participants together.
Ketua tim mempertemukan Rina dengan calon pembimbingnya.
The team leader introduces Rina to her prospective supervisor.
Acara itu mempertemukan penulis muda dan penerbit independen.
The event brings young writers and independent publishers together.
Situs tersebut mempertemukan pencari kerja dengan perusahaan rintisan.
The site connects job seekers with start-up companies.
Do not use kepada for the second participant in this frame. Kepada may occur elsewhere in a clause, but the conventional relational complement is dengan.
In a passive, the promoted participant becomes the subject while the partner remains in the dengan phrase. The causer can follow oleh, though it is often omitted.
Rina dipertemukan dengan calon pembimbingnya oleh ketua tim.
Rina is introduced to her prospective supervisor by the team leader.
Kedua kelompok itu akhirnya dipertemukan secara langsung.
The two groups are finally brought together face to face.
Calon investor itu akan kami pertemukan dengan pendiri perusahaan besok.
We will put that prospective investor in touch with the company's founder tomorrow.
Mempersoalkan: an issue as object
Mempersoalkan is monotransitive in its ordinary frame. Its object is a decision, claim, method, legality, cost, or other matter treated as questionable. A following tentang phrase is usually unnecessary when that matter can simply be the object.
Auditor mempersoalkan dua pembayaran tanpa kuitansi.
The auditor questions two payments made without receipts. (formal)
Tidak seorang pun mempersoalkan hasil pemungutan suara.
No one disputes the result of the vote.
Dia selalu mempersoalkan hal kecil saat kami sedang terburu-buru.
He always makes an issue of small things when we're in a hurry.
Komite mempersoalkan apakah data tersebut cukup mewakili populasi.
The committee questions whether the data adequately represent the population. (academic)
The apakah clause can function as the content questioned. This is not the same as politely asking a neutral information question; mempersoalkan usually signals doubt, criticism, or controversy.
The -i contrast: mempersenjatai
Mempersenjatai is included because its surface beginning resembles the other two forms while its valency comes from -i. The direct object is the goal that receives weapons, tools, skills, or resources. The supplied material commonly follows dengan.
Pemerintah mempersenjatai pasukan perbatasan dengan senjata baru.
The government arms the border forces with new weapons. (formal)
Pelatihan itu mempersenjatai peserta dengan strategi menghadapi konflik.
The training equips participants with strategies for handling conflict.
Para penjaga dipersenjatai dengan senjata api.
The guards are armed with firearms.
The literal military meaning is neutral in military reporting but can sound forceful when used metaphorically. In education or business writing, membekali ... dengan ... is often the more ordinary neutral alternative.
Lokakarya itu membekali guru dengan teknik penilaian baru.
The workshop equips teachers with new assessment techniques.
Noun phrases and clause packaging
Long derivatives frequently appear inside noun phrases headed by upaya “effort,” keputusan “decision,” rencana “plan,” or kebijakan “policy.” The actor may be expressed as a possessor-like noun before the verb or recovered from context.
Upaya pemerintah mempertemukan kedua pihak belum berhasil.
The government's effort to bring the two parties together has not succeeded. (formal)
Keputusan komite untuk mempersoalkan hasil audit mengejutkan banyak orang.
The committee's decision to challenge the audit results surprised many people. (formal)
Rencana untuk mempersenjatai petugas sipil mendapat penolakan keras.
The plan to arm civilian officers met with strong opposition. (formal)
The corresponding lexical nouns are not automatic copies of the verb. Pertemuan means meeting, persoalan means matter/problem, and persenjataan commonly means armament or weapons systems. Each has its own syntax.
Pertemuan antara kedua pihak dijadwalkan ulang.
The meeting between the two parties was rescheduled.
Persoalan utama belum dibahas dalam rapat.
The main issue has not yet been discussed at the meeting.
Anggaran persenjataan dibahas secara tertutup.
The armaments budget was discussed behind closed doors. (formal)
Competition with neighboring verbs
Mempertemukan, memperkenalkan, and mengenalkan
Mempertemukan arranges contact; memperkenalkan presents a person, name, object, or concept so that it becomes known. Mengenalkan is also standard and common, especially when the meaning is “make familiar with.”
Panitia mempertemukan saya dengan editor majalah itu.
The committee arranged for me to meet the editor of that magazine.
Editor memperkenalkan pedoman penulisan baru kepada tim.
The editor introduces a new style guide to the team.
Orang tua mengenalkan anak pada berbagai jenis sayuran sejak dini.
Parents familiarize children with different kinds of vegetables from an early age.
Mempersoalkan, mempertanyakan, membahas, and meributkan
Mempertanyakan asks or casts doubt on something; mempersoalkan treats it as a problem or controversy; membahas neutrally discusses it. Meributkan “make a fuss about” is more evaluative and common in conversation.
Peneliti mempertanyakan keandalan alat ukur tersebut.
The researchers question the reliability of that measuring instrument. (academic)
Rapat hari ini membahas biaya pemeliharaan gedung.
Today's meeting discusses the building's maintenance costs.
Jangan meributkan hal kecil seperti itu.
Don't make a fuss about such a small thing. (informal)
These verbs overlap but are not stylistic replacements in every sentence. Choose the stance as well as the register.
Lexicalized families and productivity limits
Mempertahankan, memperhitungkan, memperjuangkan, and memperlakukan fit the broad schema but have conventional meanings and collocations: defend/maintain, take into account, campaign or struggle for, and treat.
Rumah makan itu mempertahankan menu sederhana yang disukai pelanggan.
The restaurant keeps the simple menu its customers like.
Perencana harus memperhitungkan pertumbuhan jumlah penduduk.
Planners must take population growth into account. (formal)
Organisasi tersebut memperjuangkan akses pendidikan yang setara.
The organization campaigns for equal access to education. (formal)
Manajer memperlakukan semua pekerja dengan hormat.
The manager treats all workers with respect.
A dictionary-listed word can be morphologically transparent yet semantically nonliteral. Conversely, a logically possible derivative may not be established. Standard Indonesian uses membahagiakan keluarga, not a newly coined memperbahagiakan keluarga.
Formal and conversational distribution
These verbs are standard, not inherently bureaucratic. Still, dense clauses with mempersoalkan, memperhitungkan, and abstract objects are especially common in formal, academic, and journalistic prose. Conversation often chooses a shorter verb or an analytic paraphrase.
Laporan resmi itu menjelaskan bahwa mediator mempertemukan kedua pihak, anggota dewan mempersoalkan dasar keputusan, dan lembaga keamanan mempersenjatai petugas dengan senjata yang diizinkan.
The official report explains that a mediator brought the two sides together, council members questioned the basis of the decision, and the security agency armed officers with authorized weapons. (formal)
Kalau disederhanakan, mediator membantu kedua pihak bertemu, anggota dewan mempertanyakan dasar keputusannya, dan lembaga keamanan membekali petugas dengan senjata yang boleh dipakai.
Put simply, a mediator helped the two sides meet, council members questioned the basis of the decision, and the security agency equipped officers with weapons they were allowed to use. (conversational)
Nanti aku kenalkan kamu kepada editornya; kita tidak perlu meributkan hal kecil dulu.
I'll introduce you to the editor later; we don't need to make a fuss about small things yet. (informal)
The conversational alternatives are choices of vocabulary and clause structure, not “incorrect versions” of the long forms.
Common Mistakes
Omitting the first participant after mempertemukan
❌ Panitia mempertemukan dengan kepala desa.
Incomplete — the verb needs the participant whom the committee brings together with the village head.
✅ Panitia mempertemukan warga dengan kepala desa besok pagi.
The committee will bring residents together with the village head tomorrow morning.
Choosing kepada for the partner
❌ Panitia mempertemukan warga kepada kepala desa.
Incorrect frame — the partner of mempertemukan follows dengan.
✅ Panitia mempertemukan warga dengan kepala desa.
The committee brings residents together with the village head.
Adding tentang before the direct issue
❌ Auditor mempersoalkan tentang pembayaran itu.
Nonstandard in this direct-object frame — pembayaran itu can follow the verb directly.
✅ Auditor mempersoalkan pembayaran itu.
The auditor questions that payment.
Making the weapon the object of mempersenjatai
❌ Mereka mempersenjatai senapan kepada para penjaga.
Incorrect role mapping — the equipped target, not the weapon, is the direct object.
✅ Mereka mempersenjatai regu jaga dengan senapan lama.
They arm the guard unit with old rifles.
Coining a plausible but nonstandard derivative
❌ Kabar baik itu memperbahagiakan kami.
Nonstandard coinage in Indonesian — use the established membahagiakan.
✅ Kabar baik itu membahagiakan kami.
That good news makes us happy.
Key Takeaways

- Active, passive, and object voice preserve those lexical roles.
- Related nouns such as pertemuan, persoalan, and persenjataan have their own meanings and syntax.
- Competing verbs differ in stance and register, not merely length.
- Learn a productive schema together with conventional lexical families; neither pure rule nor isolated memorization is enough.
