The practical template memper- + base + -kan produces transitive verbs such as mempertemukan “bring together” and memperkenalkan “introduce.” Its length can be misleading: the actual word is written solid, and the inner per- boundary changes how ordinary nasal-prefix rules apply. This page covers form and spelling only; see the separate pages on meanings and valency and register.
The template and its voice-sensitive bracketing
For learning the surface pattern, use:
memper- + base + -kan → memperbasekan
A more revealing analysis separates active voice from the lexical stem:
meN- + [per- + base + -kan] → active verb
The active prefix has the specialized surface sequence mem- before the inner per- stem. In a di- passive, di- replaces that active layer while per-...-kan remains. A directive or first/second-person object-voice clause uses the same stem without mem-.
| Function | Bracketing | Surface form |
|---|---|---|
| active | [meN-[per-[temu]-kan]] | mempertemukan |
| di-passive | [di-[per-[temu]-kan]] | dipertemukan |
| bare stem | [per-[temu]-kan] | pertemukan |
Moderator mempertemukan kedua calon sebelum debat.
The moderator brings the two candidates together before the debate.
Kedua calon dipertemukan sebelum debat.
The two candidates are brought together before the debate.
Besok akan kami pertemukan kedua calon itu.
Tomorrow we will bring those two candidates together.
Pertemukan saya dengan penanggung jawab acara ini.
Put me in touch with the person responsible for this event.
This alternation is structural, not a tense paradigm. Mempertemukan does not mean present time, and dipertemukan does not mean past time.
Required segmentation table
The third row is deliberately a contrast. Mempersenjatai ends in -i, so it belongs to the neighboring memper-...-i formation, not to this template.
| Base | Analysis | Surface word | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| temu | [meN-[per-[temu]-kan]] | mempertemukan | memper-...-kan |
| soal | [meN-[per-[soal]-kan]] | mempersoalkan | memper-...-kan |
| senjata | [meN-[per-[senjata]-i]] | mempersenjatai | contrast: memper-...-i |
| kenal | [meN-[per-[kenal]-kan]] | memperkenalkan | established formation |
| malu | [meN-[per-[malu]-kan]] | mempermalukan | established formation |
| ringan | [meN-[pe-ringan-kan]] | memperingankan | r-initial base; one r |

The commander arms the guards with standard rifles.
Izinkan saya memperkenalkan rekan baru kami.
Allow me to introduce our new colleague.
Komentar itu mempermalukan dia di depan seluruh tim.

Penambahan satu staf akan memperingankan tugas kami.
Adding one staff member will make our duties lighter.
Why the root's first consonant normally stays
Ordinary meN- attaches directly to a root and can replace an initial p, t, s, or k. Thus meN- + soal + -kan is analyzed with deleted root s and surfaces as menyoalkan:
meN- + soal + -kan → menyoalkan
In mempersoalkan, however, per- stands between meN- and soal. The s therefore remains. The same protection preserves t in mempertemukan and k in memperkenalkan. Do not mechanically apply nasal substitution across the inner prefix.
Artikel itu menyoalkan ketimpangan akses pendidikan.
The article raises the issue of unequal access to education. (formal)
Artikel itu mempersoalkan dasar hukum kebijakan tersebut.
The article calls the legal basis of that policy into question. (formal)
Aplikasi ini mempertemukan pembeli dengan petani setempat.
This application connects buyers with local farmers.
Pemandu memperkenalkan kami kepada pemilik rumah.
The guide introduces us to the homeowner.
The spelling contrast is real even where two words overlap in translation. In analysis, show a deleted root consonant as deleted; never restore it in the surface form: menyoalkan, not mensoalkan. Conversely, do not delete a protected consonant: mempersoalkan, not memperyoalkan.
r-related allomorphy
The inner prefix is normally per-, but its final r is absent before an r-initial base. In ringan → memperingankan, the one written r belongs to ringan; memperringankan wrongly writes both prefix-final and root-initial r.
Pemerintah menghapus biaya administrasi untuk memperingankan beban warga.
The government removes the administrative fee to ease residents' burden. (formal)
Jadwal baru tidak memperingankan tugas kami.
The new schedule does not lighten our workload.
The prefix also has a reduced pe- shape before a base whose first syllable contains /ər/. The high-frequency example is kerja → mempekerjakan, not memperkerjakan. In everyday usage, meringankan is more frequent than the standard but more marked memperingankan; the longer form is useful here because it makes the r-initial allomorph visible.
Bengkel itu mempekerjakan tiga mekanik berpengalaman.
That workshop employs three experienced mechanics.
Perusahaan akan mempekerjakan penerjemah selama konferensi.
The company will employ an interpreter during the conference.
The ajar family has the exceptional pel- allomorph, most visibly in mempelajari. That word belongs to memper-...-i, but it confirms that the long template is not an invariant string to paste before every base.
Suffix attachment and solid spelling
The suffix is written directly after the base. No space, hyphen, apostrophe, or linking letter marks the boundary in an ordinary word. Vowel sequences remain visible: malu + -kan → malukan inside mempermalukan. Standard spelling does not insert w or double the suffix.
Kegagalan kecil tidak boleh mempermalukan seluruh keluarga.
A small failure should not disgrace the whole family.
Pertunjukan itu memperkenalkan musik tradisional kepada penonton muda.
The performance introduces traditional music to young audiences.
Pertanyaan terakhir mempersoalkan penggunaan data pribadi.
The final question challenges the use of personal data.
Hyphens are appropriate in the abstract label memper-...-kan and in an analysis such as per- + temu + -kan. The actual forms are mempertemukan, dipertemukan, and pertemukan.
Which bases enter the template?
Established families include bound verbal roots (temu), state or property bases (kenal, malu, ringan), nouns (soal), and bases related to ber- verbs (bertemu → mempertemukan, bertahan → mempertahankan). This range does not make the template freely available to every noun or adjective.
Tim hukum mempertahankan pendapatnya dengan bukti baru.
The legal team defends its position with new evidence.
Museum memperlihatkan koleksi tekstil yang jarang dipamerkan.
The museum shows a textile collection that is rarely exhibited.
Sekolah memperbolehkan siswa membawa komputer sendiri.
The school allows students to bring their own computers.
Memperlihatkan and memperbolehkan are conventional. Their existence does not license inventions such as memperbahagiakan for every logically imaginable causative. For bahagia, standard Indonesian uses membahagiakan.
Kabar itu membahagiakan seluruh keluarga.
That news makes the whole family happy.
Dictionary lookup
Search the full word first, then trace the listed family to its base. A dictionary may place mempertemukan under temu, mempertahankan under tahan, and mempekerjakan under kerja. Do not assume that removing the first three letters produces a usable word: pertemukan is a real stem and directive, but not every apparent intermediate has the same freedom.
Kamus menempatkan mempertahankan dalam keluarga kata tahan.
The dictionary places mempertahankan in the tahan word family. (academic)
Common Mistakes
Writing the abstract template as a real word
❌ Panitia akan memper-kan kedua kelompok itu besok.
Incorrect — memper-...-kan is a linguistic label, not a verb with an empty base.
✅ Panitia akan mempertemukan kedua kelompok itu besok.
The committee will bring the two groups together tomorrow.
Leaving a hyphen inside an actual derivative
❌ Moderator mempertemu-kan kedua calon sebelum debat.
Incorrect — ordinary affixes are joined to the base.
✅ Moderator mempertemukan dua calon sebelum siaran dimulai.
The moderator brings two candidates together before the broadcast begins.
Deleting a root consonant across per-
❌ Wartawan memperyoalkan angka dalam laporan itu.
Incorrect — the s of soal remains because per- intervenes.
✅ Wartawan mempersoalkan angka dalam laporan itu.
The journalist calls the figure in that report into question.
Writing two r's before an r-initial base
❌ Kebijakan itu memperringankan beban usaha kecil.
Incorrect — prefix-final r is absent before ringan.
✅ Kebijakan itu memperingankan beban usaha kecil.
That policy eases the burden on small businesses.
Missing the reduced form in the kerja family
❌ Hotel itu memperkerjakan dua koki baru.
Incorrect in Standard Indonesian — kerja triggers the reduced pe- allomorph.
✅ Hotel itu mempekerjakan dua koki baru.
The hotel employs two new cooks.
Forcing -kan onto an -i family
❌ Petugas mempersenjatakan para penjaga.
Wrong suffix for the established verb meaning ‘arm/equip.’
✅ Petugas mempersenjatai para penjaga.
The officers arm the guards.
Key Takeaways
- Active memper-...-kan, passive diper-...-kan, and bare per-...-kan share an inner derivational stem.
- Root-initial p, t, s, and k normally remain because per- separates them from meN-.
- Prefix-final r is absent before an r-initial base, and the kerja family has reduced pe-: memperingankan, mempekerjakan.
- Actual words are solid; hyphens belong only to abstract affix labels and morphological analysis.
- The schema is productive but lexically restricted, so dictionary confirmation remains essential.
