memper-...-i: Valency, Lexicalization, and Register

The family traditionally described as memper-...-i is regular enough to reveal an argument-structure pattern, but too restricted to be a word-making machine. Memperbaiki mesin, memperlengkapi klinik dengan alat, and mempersenjatai pasukan dengan senapan all select an affected target as their direct object. Exactly which targets, meanings, and alternatives sound natural, however, belongs to the lexicon.

This page focuses on valency, competing derivatives, lexicalization, and register. The formation guide explains spelling and allomorphy, while the meaning guide maps the derivational network.

The central argument frame

The most useful frame is:

causer + memper-...-i verb + affected target + optional dengan phrase

The direct object is the entity changed, supplied, or equipped. A following dengan phrase can identify the resource used to produce that result.

Teknisi memperbaiki mesin pendingin sebelum toko dibuka.

The technician repairs the refrigeration unit before the shop opens.

Yayasan memperlengkapi klinik itu dengan dua generator baru.

The foundation equips that clinic with two new generators.

Pemerintah mempersenjatai penjaga perbatasan dengan senjata standar.

The government arms the border guards with standard weapons. (formal)

In the first clause, mesin pendingin undergoes repair. In the other two, klinik and penjaga perbatasan are goals that receive equipment. English often uses unrelated verbs—repair, equip, arm—so an English translation does not expose the shared Indonesian architecture.

💡
Test the roles with a passive. The affected target can become the passive subject: mesin diperbaiki, klinik diperlengkapi, penjaga dipersenjatai. The resource remains in a dengan phrase.

Object choice determines the lexical reading

Memperbaiki combines with machinery, texts, behavior, relationships, performance, and institutions. The context supplies the standard toward which the object is moved, so English translations range from repair through correct to improve.

Montir memperbaiki rem sepeda saya sore ini.

The mechanic is repairing my bicycle brakes this afternoon.

Editor memperbaiki tiga kesalahan pada naskah terakhir.

The editor corrects three errors in the final manuscript.

Kedua pihak berusaha memperbaiki hubungan setelah pertemuan itu.

Both sides are trying to improve relations after that meeting.

Pelatih mengubah jadwal untuk memperbaiki performa tim.

The coach changes the schedule to improve the team's performance.

The verb is therefore not fully compositional as “cause to be good at.” Its object collocations have conventional readings. The same is true of memperlengkapi: with a room, clinic, vehicle, or team as object, it normally means supplying what that goal needs.

Pengelola memperlengkapi ruang rapat dengan layar dan mikrofon.

The management equips the meeting room with a screen and microphones.

Tim logistik memperlengkapi para relawan sebelum mereka berangkat.

The logistics team equips the volunteers before they leave.

Setiap perahu diperlengkapi dengan pelampung dan radio.

Every boat is equipped with life jackets and a radio. (formal)

Mempersenjatai is literal with weapons and figurative with resources presented as tools for conflict or advocacy. The figurative metaphor is forceful; neutral prose often prefers membekali.

Milisi itu mempersenjatai anggotanya dengan senapan rakitan.

The militia arms its members with homemade rifles.

Pengacara itu mempersenjatai diri dengan data dan putusan terdahulu.

The lawyer arms herself with data and earlier rulings.

Lokakarya ini membekali peserta dengan teknik negosiasi dasar.

This workshop equips participants with basic negotiation techniques. (neutral alternative)

Active clauses, passive counterparts, and noun phrases

The active form foregrounds the causer. When the affected object is already the discourse topic, Indonesian can use diper-...-i with a third-person agent or the inner stem after a pronominal agent.

Tim teknis memperbaiki jaringan itu tadi malam.

The technical team repaired that network last night.

Jaringan itu diperbaiki oleh tim teknis tadi malam.

That network was repaired by the technical team last night.

Jaringan itu sudah kami perbaiki.

We have already repaired that network.

The passive is diperbaiki, not dimemperbaiki. In morphological analysis, the outer active layer is removed: [meN-[per-[baik]-i]] alternates with [di-[per-[baik]-i]] and pronominal-agent perbaiki. Actual Indonesian words remain solid.

The active verb also occurs inside noun phrases after event nouns such as upaya, rencana, and program, or in actor relative clauses.

Upaya memperbaiki layanan darurat memerlukan tambahan tenaga.

The effort to improve emergency services requires additional staff. (formal)

Program memperlengkapi sekolah terpencil dimulai bulan depan.

The program to equip remote schools begins next month. (formal)

Organisasi yang mempersenjatai kelompok sipil itu sedang diselidiki.

The organization that armed that civilian group is under investigation.

English uses an infinitive in the effort to improve. Indonesian does not add an infinitive marker; memperbaiki remains verbal material within the larger noun phrase.

Competition with neighboring affixes

Memperbaiki versus property-changing memper-

The established verb from baik is memperbaiki, not memperbaik. Other adjectives conventionally take memper- without -i, including memperjelas, memperbesar, and memperpanjang.

Desainer memperbesar judul dan memperbaiki susunan paragraf.

The designer enlarges the title and improves the paragraph arrangement.

Grafik tambahan memperjelas perubahan harga selama setahun.

The additional chart clarifies the price changes over a year. (academic)

No semantic formula predicts the suffix perfectly. The contrast has to be learned family by family.

Memperlengkapi versus melengkapi

Melengkapi is much more frequent and can mean completing a set, providing a missing component, or furnishing something. Memperlengkapi especially favors the equipped-goal reading and often sounds more institutional or formal. The boundary overlaps; it is not a mechanically reliable difference.

Silakan lengkapi formulir ini dengan nomor telepon yang aktif.

Please complete this form with an active telephone number.

Pemerintah daerah memperlengkapi pos kesehatan dengan alat pemeriksaan dasar.

The local government equips health posts with basic examination tools. (formal)

Kami melengkapi dapur kantor dengan kulkas kecil.

We furnish the office kitchen with a small refrigerator.

The final example shows the overlap honestly: many speakers would choose ordinary melengkapi in everyday usage even where memperlengkapi is structurally possible.

Mempersenjatai, bersenjata, and bersenjatakan

These forms do not merely vary in style. Mempersenjatai is transitive and selects the supplier as subject; bersenjata describes the possessor's state; bersenjatakan introduces what serves as the weapon.

Petugas mempersenjatai regu itu dengan tongkat.

The officers equip that squad with batons.

Regu itu bersenjata lengkap.

That squad is fully armed.

Tokoh itu melawan ketidakadilan bersenjatakan pena.

The figure fights injustice armed with a pen. (literary)

Changing the affix changes the participant structure. It is not safe to exchange the three forms while keeping the same noun-phrase order.

A productive schema plus lexical families

The schema helps learners recognize an affected target, a possible equipment phrase, and a voice alternation. It does not license every imaginable base. Standard Indonesian has memperbarui “renew/update,” memperingati “commemorate,” and exceptional mempelajari “study,” but each has its own collocations and semantic history.

Saya memperbarui paspor sebelum memesan tiket.

I renew my passport before booking the ticket.

Warga memperingati hari jadi kota dengan festival kecil.

Residents commemorate the city's anniversary with a small festival.

Tim hukum sedang mempelajari isi kontrak tersebut.

The legal team is studying the contents of the contract. (formal)

There is no honest shortcut here. A dictionary can confirm that a form exists, but its entry does not prove that its meaning is fully compositional, that every conceivable object is idiomatic, or that the word is equally common in all registers. Learn a verb together with two or three typical objects and its common complement pattern.

💡
Treat the morphology as a prediction about family resemblance, then treat actual collocations as lexical evidence. This middle position is more accurate than either “every form is predictable” or “every form is an unrelated word.”

Formal compactness and conversational paraphrase

Compact derivatives are particularly useful in administrative, academic, and journalistic prose.

Pemerintah akan memperbaiki jalan penghubung, memperlengkapi klinik perbatasan, dan mempersenjatai petugas yang ditugaskan di wilayah rawan.

The government will repair the connecting road, equip the border clinic, and arm officers assigned to the high-risk area. (formal)

In conversation, speakers may retain the standard verbs, but they also use analytic or colloquial alternatives. Benerin is (informal; especially Jakarta-influenced speech), and kasih ... perlengkapan is an ordinary analytic paraphrase.

Katanya mereka mau benerin jalan penghubungnya, kasih peralatan lengkap buat klinik perbatasan, sama kasih senjata ke petugas yang ditempatkan di daerah rawan.

They say they're going to fix the connecting road, provide complete equipment for the border clinic, and give weapons to the officers stationed in the high-risk area. (informal, Jakarta-influenced paraphrase)

Bisa perbaiki alamatnya sekarang? Paketnya sebentar lagi dikirim.

Can you correct the address now? The package is about to be sent.

The standard perbaiki is perfectly natural in conversation. Formal–colloquial distribution is a tendency in lexical selection, not a ban on morphology in speech.

Common Mistakes

Coining every logically possible derivative

❌ Bagan itu memperjelasi hubungan sebab dan akibat.

Nonstandard coinage—the established verb is memperjelas, without -i.

✅ Bagan itu memperjelas hubungan sebab dan akibat.

The chart clarifies the relationship between cause and effect. (academic)

Treating a listed word as fully compositional

❌ Upacara itu memperingati para tamu agar berhati-hati.

Incorrect lexical choice—memperingati means commemorate, not warn.

✅ Petugas memperingatkan para tamu agar berhati-hati.

The officer warns the guests to be careful.

Making the supplied resource the direct object

❌ Yayasan memperlengkapi komputer kepada sekolah itu.

Incorrect role order—the school is the goal being equipped, and the computers belong in a dengan phrase.

✅ Yayasan memperlengkapi sekolah itu dengan komputer.

The foundation equips that school with computers.

Using the wrong voice layering

❌ Semua komputer sedang dimemperbaiki oleh teknisi.

Incorrect—the passive replaces outer meN- with di-.

✅ Semua komputer sedang diperbaiki oleh teknisi.

All the computers are being repaired by a technician.

Restoring or deleting a consonant in the wrong environment

❌ Pemerintah memperenjatai satuan itu dengan senapan.

Incorrect spelling—the s of senjata remains after the inner per-.

✅ Pemerintah mempersenjatai satuan itu dengan senapan.

The government arms that unit with rifles. (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • Core memper-...-i verbs select an affected or equipped target as direct object; a resource can follow dengan.
  • Voice alternation is memperbaiki / diperbaiki / saya perbaiki, never dimemperbaiki.
  • Neighboring affixes compete by lexical family and argument structure, not through one universal semantic equation.
  • The schema is productive enough to guide analysis but restricted enough that new formations and collocations require lexical evidence.
  • Compact derivatives suit careful prose, while ordinary conversation may retain them or choose analytic and regionally colloquial paraphrases.
