memper-...-i: Meanings and Derivational Network

The small but important memper-...-i network combines a base-related change with an affected target or goal as direct object. In memperlengkapi klinik dengan alat baru, the clinic is the goal supplied with equipment; in memperbaiki mesin, the machine is the target brought into a better condition. The schema is causative-applicative, but its high-frequency members are strongly lexicalized. This page covers meaning; see formation and allomorphy and the separate usage page for the other questions.

The causative-applicative logic

Two semantic operations often converge:

  1. A causer brings about a state, possession, or base-related effect.
  2. The entity receiving that effect is selected as the direct object.

With a property base, the object may be caused to improve. With a noun base, the object may be supplied with what the noun denotes. This helps explain the contrast between baik → memperbaiki mesin and senjata → mempersenjatai penjaga.

Teknisi memperbaiki mesin pendingin yang bocor.

The technician repairs the leaking refrigeration unit.

Donatur memperlengkapi klinik dengan dua mesin baru.

The donors equip the clinic with two new machines.

Komandan mempersenjatai para penjaga dengan senapan.

The commander arms the guards with rifles.

The suffix does not contribute an independent English word. English uses repair, equip, and arm, but Indonesian packages those conventional meanings through related morphological frames.

💡
Locate the direct object before translating. In core memper-...-i families, it is often the entity improved, equipped, renewed, or otherwise targeted by the base-related effect.

Required root-family diagram

Base contributionDerived familyObject roleConventional range
baik “good”baik → perbaiki → memperbaikientity brought toward a better/working/correct staterepair, improve, correct, amend
lengkap “complete”lengkap → perlengkapi → memperlengkapigoal supplied so that it is adequately equippedequip, furnish, provide with
senjata “weapon”senjata → persenjatai → mempersenjataigoal supplied with literal or figurative resourcesarm, equip

Editor memperbaiki judul agar lebih mudah ditemukan.

The editor improves the title so it is easier to find.

Sekolah memperlengkapi laboratorium dengan alat pemadam kebakaran.

The school equips the laboratory with fire extinguishers.

Pelatihan itu mempersenjatai relawan dengan pengetahuan hukum dasar.

The training equips volunteers with basic legal knowledge.

All three objects are affected goals, but the exact effect comes from the lexical base and established family. Memperbaiki does not mean “supply with goodness,” and memperlengkapi does not merely mean “make more complete” in every context.

Baik → memperbaiki: improvement, repair, and correction

Memperbaiki is transparent enough to evoke baik, yet its English translation changes with the object. With equipment it means repair; with performance or conditions, improve; with language or data, correct or revise; with conduct, reform or mend.

Montir memperbaiki rem sepeda saya dalam satu jam.

The mechanic repairs my bicycle brakes in an hour.

Kami sedang memperbaiki kualitas suara dalam rekaman itu.

We are improving the sound quality in that recording.

Tolong perbaiki nomor rekening pada formulir ini.

Please correct the account number on this form.

Pemerintah berjanji memperbaiki tata kelola bantuan sosial.

The government promises to improve the governance of social assistance. (formal)

The object need not become literally “good”; it moves toward a contextually expected standard. That standard may be mechanical operation, accuracy, quality, or institutional effectiveness.

Lengkap → memperlengkapi: supplying a goal

Memperlengkapi profiles the place, person, or organization supplied with necessary items. A dengan phrase can name the supplied material.

Yayasan memperlengkapi perpustakaan desa dengan rak dan komputer.

The foundation equips the village library with shelves and computers.

Setiap kendaraan diperlengkapi dengan kotak pertolongan pertama.

Every vehicle is equipped with a first-aid kit. (formal)

Tim medis memperlengkapi pos darurat sebelum musim hujan.

The medical team equips the emergency post before the rainy season.

Compare melengkapi formulir “complete a form/provide its missing parts” with memperlengkapi ruang dengan alat “equip a room with tools.” The contrast is not perfectly productive in every speaker's usage, and melengkapi often competes with memperlengkapi. Still, the latter strongly favors an equipped-goal interpretation in careful writing.

Pelamar melengkapi formulir dengan salinan paspor.

The applicant completes the form with a copy of the passport.

Pengelola memperlengkapi ruang rapat dengan layar besar.

The management equips the meeting room with a large screen.

Senjata → mempersenjatai: literal and metaphorical equipment

In the literal reading, the object receives weapons. In an extended reading, knowledge, evidence, vocabulary, or skills function metaphorically as resources for action. The metaphor can be rhetorically strong, so neutral educational prose often uses membekali instead.

Kelompok itu mempersenjatai anggotanya dengan senjata rakitan.

The group arms its members with homemade weapons.

Pengacara mempersenjatai diri dengan bukti dan putusan terdahulu.

The lawyer arms herself with evidence and earlier rulings.

Kursus ini mempersenjatai peserta dengan kosakata untuk bernegosiasi.

This course equips participants with vocabulary for negotiation.

Kursus ini membekali peserta dengan kosakata untuk bernegosiasi.

This course provides participants with vocabulary for negotiation. (neutral alternative)

The reflexive diri makes the subject both supplier and equipped goal. It is especially common in figurative contexts.

Baru → memperbarui: renewal and updating

Memperbarui does not normally mean “make somewhat newer” by degree. It conventionally means renew the validity of something, update its content or technology, or refresh an institutional arrangement.

Saya memperbarui surat izin mengemudi minggu lalu.

I renewed my driver's license last week.

Aplikasi memperbarui data secara otomatis setiap malam.

The application updates the data automatically every night.

Kedua negara sepakat memperbarui perjanjian kerja sama.

The two countries agree to renew the cooperation agreement. (formal)

The transparent relation to baru helps memory, but object collocations distinguish renew from update. A passport or agreement is renewed; software or data is updated.

Ingat → memperingati and the -kan contrast

Memperingati means commemorate or observe an event, anniversary, or person. It is not simply “make the object remember.” The neighboring memperingatkan means warn or remind and commonly takes a person as object.

Sekolah memperingati Hari Pendidikan Nasional dengan pameran buku.

The school observes National Education Day with a book exhibition.

Upacara itu memperingati para korban bencana.

The ceremony commemorates the victims of the disaster.

Petugas memperingatkan pengunjung agar tidak berdiri terlalu dekat.

The officer warns visitors not to stand too close.

Pesan itu mengingatkan saya pada janji lama.

That message reminds me of an old promise.

This family is the clearest warning against deriving meaning from spelling alone. Memperingati and memperingatkan share a base but have different objects and highly conventional meanings.

💡
Learn suffix contrasts in full clauses: memperingati hari bersejarah “commemorate a historic day” versus memperingatkan orang akan bahaya “warn someone of danger.”

Ajar → mempelajari: transparent form, lexicalized meaning

Exceptional mempelajari belongs to the wider memper-...-i family morphologically, but its modern meaning is simply study, examine, or learn about. It does not productively mean “cause the object to teach.”

Tim ahli mempelajari dampak proyek terhadap kualitas air.

The expert team studies the project's impact on water quality. (academic)

Saya sedang mempelajari cara menggunakan mesin ini.

I am learning how to use this machine.

Dokumen tersebut telah dipelajari oleh tim hukum.

The document has been examined by the legal team. (formal)

The morphology remains useful because it predicts mempelajari / dipelajari / pelajari, but the semantic frame must be stored as a lexical fact. Morphological transparency and semantic compositionality are separate questions.

Restricted productivity

The schema cannot be extended to every property or noun. Indonesian uses memperjelas “clarify,” not memperjelasi; memperbesar “enlarge,” not memperbesari; and membahagiakan “make happy,” not memperbahagiai.

Grafik ini memperjelas perbedaan antara kedua kelompok.

This chart clarifies the difference between the two groups. (academic)

Kami memperbesar gambar agar tulisannya terbaca.

We enlarge the image so its text can be read.

Kedatangan mereka membahagiakan nenek.

Their arrival makes Grandmother happy.

These gaps are genuinely lexical. A learner cannot predict the whole inventory from base category alone; dictionary confirmation and exposure to collocations are necessary.

Voice and role preservation

Voice changes which participant is syntactically foregrounded but preserves the affected-goal frame.

Teknisi memperbaiki semua komputer di ruang itu.

The technician repairs all the computers in that room.

Semua komputer di ruang itu diperbaiki oleh teknisi.

All the computers in that room are repaired by the technician.

Semua komputer itu akan kami perbaiki besok.

We will repair all those computers tomorrow.

Likewise, the direct object of mempersenjatai becomes the passive subject: penjaga dipersenjatai dengan radio. The dengan phrase remains equipment, not an agent.

Para penjaga dipersenjatai dengan tongkat, bukan senapan.

The guards are armed with batons, not rifles.

No fixed English translation

The same template corresponds to repair, improve, correct, equip, arm, update, renew, commemorate, deceive, and study. Translating every member with “make more” or “provide with” produces unnatural English and often a wrong analysis.

Ia memperdayai pembeli dengan ulasan palsu.

He deceives buyers with fake reviews.

Editor memperbaiki terjemahan, lalu memperbarui berkas utama.

The editor corrects the translation, then updates the master file.

The productive schema explains a family resemblance. The lexicon determines the conventional English verb and the collocations each Indonesian form permits.

Common Mistakes

Translating memperbaiki as one fixed English phrase

❌ Memperbaiki selalu berarti membuat lebih baik secara umum.

Incorrect generalization — with a machine it normally means repair, and with an error it means correct.

✅ Teknisi memperbaiki mesin, lalu editor memperbaiki kesalahan ketik.

The technician repairs the machine, then the editor corrects the typo.

Adding a preposition before the affected goal

❌ Yayasan memperlengkapi kepada klinik dengan alat baru.

Incorrect — klinik is the direct affected-goal object.

✅ Yayasan memperlengkapi klinik dengan alat baru.

The foundation equips the clinic with new instruments.

Reversing goal and equipment

❌ Mereka mempersenjatai senapan dengan para penjaga.

Incorrect role mapping — the guards receive the weapons.

✅ Mereka mempersenjatai para penjaga dengan senapan.

They arm the guards with rifles.

Confusing commemoration with warning

❌ Sekolah memperingatkan Hari Kemerdekaan dengan upacara.

Wrong derivative — memperingatkan means warn or remind, not commemorate.

✅ Sekolah memperingati Hari Kemerdekaan dengan upacara.

The school commemorates Independence Day with a ceremony.

Extending the schema to an unlicensed adjective

❌ Diagram itu memperjelasi hubungan kedua variabel.

Nonstandard coinage — the established verb is memperjelas.

✅ Diagram itu memperjelas hubungan kedua variabel.

The diagram clarifies the relationship between the two variables. (academic)

Key Takeaways

  • Memper-...-i often combines caused change or supply with an affected goal as direct object.
  • Memperbaiki, memperlengkapi, and mempersenjatai share that architecture but have distinct conventional meanings.
  • High-frequency memperbarui, memperingati, and mempelajari are morphologically interpretable yet semantically lexicalized.
  • The -i/-kan contrast can change both meaning and object selection, as in memperingati versus memperingatkan.
  • Productivity is restricted; natural use requires learning each family's object frame and collocations.
