Memper-...-kan often creates a transitive event in which an actor causes, arranges, presents, or treats something in relation to the base. That generalization unites mempertemukan “bring together” and mempermalukan “humiliate,” but it does not predict every dictionary meaning. This page maps the semantic network; formation and usage are treated separately.
A causative core with lexical branches
In a transparent causative, the subject brings about a base-related situation. Compare Mira dan Rafi bertemu “Mira and Rafi meet” with Panitia mempertemukan Mira dengan Rafi “The committee brings Mira and Rafi together.” The added causer is panitia, while the meeting participants become internal arguments of the derived verb.
Mira bertemu dengan Rafi di lobi.
Mira meets Rafi in the lobby.
Panitia mempertemukan Mira dengan Rafi di lobi.
The committee brings Mira and Rafi together in the lobby.
Program itu mempertemukan mahasiswa dengan calon pemberi kerja.
The program connects students with prospective employers.
Property bases can yield caused states. Mempermalukan seseorang causes that person to experience shame, while memperingankan beban causes a burden to become lighter in a literal or figurative sense.
Ucapan itu mempermalukan tuan rumah di depan para tamu.
That remark embarrasses the host in front of the guests.
Subsidi tersebut memperingankan beban keluarga berpenghasilan rendah.
The subsidy eases the burden on low-income families. (formal)
English uses unrelated verbs such as connect, embarrass, and ease. Indonesian shows their family resemblance morphologically, but the base and established usage still determine the precise result.
The required three-family diagram
The third branch is a deliberate suffix contrast. It shows why apparent affix stacking cannot be assigned one meaning merely from its length.
| Base family | Derived path | Conventional reading | Participant frame |
|---|---|---|---|
| temu / bertemu | temu → pertemukan → mempertemukan | cause participants or ideas to meet | cause + participant A + dengan B |
| soal | soal → persoalkan → mempersoalkan | make an issue of; question; dispute | questioner + issue |
| senjata | senjata → persenjatai → mempersenjatai | arm or equip a target | supplier + target + dengan equipment |
Fasilitator mempertemukan warga dengan perwakilan pemerintah kota.
The facilitator brings residents together with city-government representatives.
Anggota dewan mempersoalkan sumber dana proyek tersebut.
Council members question the source of funding for the project. (formal)
Pasukan itu mempersenjatai para penjaga dengan senapan lama.
The unit arms the guards with old rifles.
Mempertemukan retains a clear causative relation to bertemu. Mempersoalkan is less literal: it profiles treating something as problematic or open to dispute, not simply “causing a question to exist.” Mempersenjatai is an applicative -i family: the target receiving equipment is its object. These are conventional valency patterns, not unlimited layers that speakers recursively stack at will.
Causing contact, encounter, or convergence
The participants of mempertemukan may be people, organizations, ideas, routes, or textual elements. The common denominator is arranged contact or convergence.
Aplikasi itu mempertemukan pelanggan dengan penyedia jasa di sekitar mereka.
The application connects customers with nearby service providers.
Pameran ini mempertemukan seni tradisional dengan teknologi digital.
This exhibition brings traditional art together with digital technology.
Jembatan baru mempertemukan dua jalur sepeda di tepi sungai.
The new bridge joins two bicycle routes by the river.
When people have not met before, mempertemukan can overlap with memperkenalkan “introduce.” The former foregrounds arranging contact; the latter foregrounds establishing acquaintance or presenting an identity.
Teman saya mempertemukan kami di sebuah seminar.
My friend arranged for us to meet at a seminar.
Teman saya memperkenalkan saya kepada ketua komunitas.
My friend introduced me to the community leader.
The distinction is a viewpoint, not a mechanical rule about first meetings. Context may make both possible, but they package different aspects of the event.
Treating something as an issue
With soal, the derived verb conventionally means question, dispute, criticize, or make an issue of its object. It frequently carries an evaluative stance: the subject is not merely asking for information but presenting the object as problematic.
Tidak ada yang mempersoalkan harga tiket sebelum biaya tambahan diumumkan.
No one questioned the ticket price before the extra charge was announced.
Para peneliti mempersoalkan metode pengambilan sampel dalam studi itu.
The researchers call the sampling method in that study into question. (academic)
Aku tidak mempersoalkan pilihanmu; aku hanya ingin memahami alasannya.
I'm not taking issue with your choice; I just want to understand the reason. (informal)
This lexical family illustrates how a compositional paraphrase—“treat as a question/problem”—develops conventional discourse functions. Depending on context, English may need question, challenge, dispute, object to, or make an issue of.
Presentation and access
Several common families cause a participant to perceive, know, or gain access to something. Memperlihatkan means show, memperdengarkan means play or let someone hear, and memperkenalkan means introduce.
Dokter memperlihatkan hasil pemindaian kepada pasien.
The doctor shows the scan results to the patient.
Guru memperdengarkan rekaman wawancara kepada kelas.
The teacher plays a recording of an interview for the class.
Buku itu memperkenalkan konsep statistik melalui contoh sehari-hari.
The book introduces statistical concepts through everyday examples.
These are causative in a broad sense, but English rarely translates them with make. The actor makes a stimulus available or establishes an epistemic/social relation.
Permission, maintenance, and evaluation
Other high-frequency forms have conventional readings that must be learned as lexical families. Memperbolehkan means allow, mempertahankan means retain, maintain, or defend, and memperhitungkan can mean calculate or take into account.
Aturan baru memperbolehkan penumpang mengubah jadwal satu kali.
The new rule allows passengers to change their schedule once.
Restoran itu telah mempertahankan resep asli sejak tahun 1980-an.
The restaurant has kept the original recipe since the 1980s.
Desain bangunan harus memperhitungkan risiko banjir.
The building design must take flood risk into account. (formal)
Petugas memperhitungkan jumlah kotak yang dapat dimuat sebelum truk berangkat.
The officer calculates how many boxes can be loaded before the truck leaves.
The two readings of memperhitungkan are related through mental calculation, yet only context identifies whether actual arithmetic or broader consideration is intended. Mempertahankan similarly ranges from physically defending a position to preserving a habit or standard.
Tim tuan rumah mempertahankan keunggulan sampai pertandingan berakhir.
The home team maintains its lead until the match ends.
Prajurit mempertahankan pos itu selama tiga hari.
The soldiers defend that post for three days.
Why -kan is not always “extra causative”
Indonesian has established memper- verbs without -kan, especially degree-changing forms such as memperbesar, memperkecil, and memperluas. Adding -kan is not a general way to make them “more causative.” Standard Indonesian normally uses memperbesar layar, not memperbesarkan layar.
Teknisi memperbesar ukuran huruf pada layar.
The technician enlarges the font size on the screen.
Pemerintah memperluas layanan bus ke wilayah timur.
The government expands bus service to the eastern area. (formal)
By contrast, mempermalukan and mempertemukan conventionally require -kan. The choice belongs partly to semantics and partly to the lexicon. There is no honest rule that derives every member from “more + adjective” or “make + root.”
The memper-...-i contrast
Mempersenjatai selects the target that receives weapons or figurative resources. Its -i pattern is goal-oriented, whereas a typical -kan pattern may foreground a caused event or presented theme.
Pelatih mempersenjatai peserta dengan teknik negosiasi dasar.
The coach equips participants with basic negotiation techniques.
Pelatih memperlihatkan teknik negosiasi dasar kepada peserta.
The coach demonstrates basic negotiation techniques to participants.
In the first clause, peserta is the equipped goal. In the second, teknik is what is shown. The suffix distinction therefore interacts with object choice, not just dictionary translation.
Voice preserves the lexical meaning
Active mempertemukan, passive dipertemukan, and object voice kami pertemukan select different clause perspectives while retaining the bring-together sense.
Panitia mempertemukan kedua pihak secara daring.
The committee brings the two parties together online.
Kedua pihak dipertemukan secara daring oleh panitia.
The two parties are brought together online by the committee.
Kedua pihak akan kami pertemukan secara daring.
We will bring the two parties together online.
Voice does not add another causative layer. It reorganizes an already conventional derived verb.
Common Mistakes
Assigning the translation “make” to every form
❌ Mempersoalkan selalu berarti membuat seseorang bertanya.
Incorrect interpretation — mempersoalkan usually means question, dispute, or make an issue of something.
✅ Warga mempersoalkan kenaikan biaya parkir.
Residents object to the increase in parking fees.
Treating mempertemukan as an ordinary two-person intransitive
❌ Rina mempertemukan dengan Dedi di kafe.
Incorrect — mempertemukan requires a causer and an object participant.
✅ Sari mempertemukan Rina dengan Dedi di kafe.
Sari brings Rina and Dedi together at a café.
Making every memper- verb longer with -kan
❌ Tolong memperbesarkan tulisan di layar.
Nonstandard in this meaning — the established degree-changing verb is memperbesar.
✅ Tolong memperbesar tulisan di layar.
Please enlarge the text on the screen.
Interpreting mempersenjatai as a -kan causative
❌ Mempersenjatai berarti membuat senjata menjadi sesuatu.
Incorrect analysis — it is an -i family meaning arm or equip a target.
✅ Mereka mempersenjatai penjaga dengan senapan.
They arm the guards with rifles.
Reading a lexicalized family too literally
❌ Memperhitungkan risiko hanya berarti menghitung risiko dengan angka.
Incorrect generalization — it commonly means take a risk into consideration.
✅ Kami memperhitungkan risiko keterlambatan dalam rencana itu.
We take the risk of delay into account in that plan.
Key Takeaways
- The core schema adds a causer or organizer of a base-related situation, but established families develop specialized meanings.
- Mempertemukan causes contact, while mempersoalkan treats an object as disputable or problematic.
- Mempersenjatai is a goal-oriented -i contrast, not a -kan member.
- Suffix stacking is lexically licensed: memperbesar is standard, not an automatically lengthened memperbesarkan.
- Translate each conventional verb and its argument frame naturally; there is no single English equivalent for memper-...-kan.
