per-: Meanings and Derivational Network

The clearest modern per- families add a causative or factitive layer: besar “large” contributes a target property, while memperbesar means “cause to become larger.” Yet visible per also appears in mempersatukan “unite,” pertama “first,” sepertiga “one third,” and free per orang “per person.” These forms cannot all be translated by one prefix meaning.

Modern productivity lives mainly inside larger templates such as memper-, diper-, per-...-kan, and formal lexical vocabulary. This page maps the meanings that cluster around per-. The formation page handles surface shapes and the usage page handles valency and register.

The central causative/factitive idea

With a licensed property base, the larger verb means “cause the object to have more of this property” or “bring the object into this state.”

Desainer memperbesar judul agar mudah terlihat dari jauh.

The designer enlarges the title so it is easy to see from a distance.

Kami memperpanjang meja dengan memasang daun tambahan.

We lengthen the table by adding an extension leaf.

Pembaruan itu mempercepat proses pencarian data.

That update speeds up the data-search process.

The object begins with some size, length, or speed and ends farther along the scale. English may use enlarge, lengthen, or the analytic phrase make faster. Indonesian organizes all three through related morphology, but only with bases the lexicon licenses.

💡
For a transparent property base, imagine a scale: memperbesar X moves X toward “larger,” and memperkecil X moves it toward “smaller.” Then check whether that family is conventional.

A three-family diagram

The required families reveal both the shared structure and its limits:

besar ──per-──▶ perbesar ──▶ memperbesar / diperbesar / Perbesar ...
make larger; increase scope or impact

panjang ──per-──▶ perpanjang ──▶ memperpanjang / diperpanjang / Perpanjang ...
lengthen physically; extend duration or validity

satu ──per-──▶ persatu- ──▶ persatukan / mempersatukan / dipersatukan
cause separate people or parts to form one whole

Persatu- is a bound stem in current usage; it normally needs -kan or another larger derivational frame. The diagram does not imply a free finite verb persatu.

besar → perbesar: physical size, degree, and scope

The core is literal increase in physical or visual size.

Klik ikon kaca pembesar untuk memperbesar gambar.

Click the magnifying-glass icon to enlarge the image.

Ruang penyimpanan diperbesar setelah jumlah koleksi bertambah.

The storage room was enlarged after the collection grew.

Context extends the same scale to capacity, difference, risk, or effect.

Bank akan memperbesar kapasitas layanan digital tahun depan.

The bank will increase its digital-service capacity next year. (formal)

Komentar tanpa bukti hanya memperbesar kecurigaan publik.

Comments without evidence only heighten public suspicion.

Kesenjangan itu diperbesar oleh akses pendidikan yang tidak merata.

That gap is widened by unequal access to education. (academic)

English switches among enlarge, increase, heighten, and widen. Indonesian memperbesar preserves the abstract notion of increasing magnitude, while the noun selects the natural English equivalent.

panjang → perpanjang: space, time, and validity

Physical length is possible, but institutional time is especially common: contracts, permits, deadlines, and operating hours are “made longer.”

Teknisi memperpanjang pipa sampai ke halaman belakang.

The technician extends the pipe to the back yard.

Pemilik rumah memperpanjang kontrak sewa selama satu tahun.

The homeowner extends the rental contract for one year.

Batas waktu pendaftaran diperpanjang sampai Jumat.

The registration deadline has been extended until Friday. (formal)

Saya harus memperpanjang paspor sebelum bepergian.

I have to renew my passport before traveling.

The passport itself does not become physically longer. Memperpanjang paspor conventionally means extending its period of validity, which English lexicalizes as renew. This is ordinary polysemy, not a different prefix.

satu → persatu-: making one whole

The satu family combines per- with the valency-changing -kan: persatukan, mempersatukan, dipersatukan. The result is not merely “make one object”; it conventionally integrates people, groups, ideas, or parts into a unity.

Tujuan bersama mempersatukan warga dari latar belakang yang berbeda.

A shared goal unites residents from different backgrounds.

Ketiga divisi itu dipersatukan dalam satu direktorat baru.

The three divisions were combined into one new directorate. (formal)

Mari persatukan data dari semua cabang dalam satu sistem.

Let's consolidate the data from all branches in one system.

Bahasa Indonesia sering digambarkan sebagai salah satu pemersatu bangsa.

Indonesian is often described as one of the nation's unifying forces.

The related nouns pemersatu, pemersatuan, and persatuan profile a unifying entity, a unification process, and unity/association. Their bracketing differs, even though satu anchors the family.

Persatuan tidak berarti bahwa semua perbedaan harus dihapus.

Unity does not mean that all differences must be erased.

Lexically selected factitive readings

With some noun-like bases, the larger form means “make/treat as X.” These formations are much less freely productive than the gradable adjective pattern.

Penjajah memperbudak penduduk setempat selama puluhan tahun.

The colonizers enslaved the local population for decades.

Ia dituduh memperalat organisasi itu untuk kepentingan pribadi.

He was accused of using that organization as a tool for personal interests. (formal)

Raja itu memperistri putri dari kerajaan tetangga.

The king took a princess from a neighboring kingdom as his wife. (literary/historical)

Memperbudak is a direct factitive “make into a slave.” Memperalat is usually figurative “exploit/use as a tool.” Memperistri belongs chiefly to formal, historical, or literary discourse and encodes a culturally and gender-specific lexical relation. A learner cannot replace the base with any noun and expect a standard word.

Ordering: lexical pertama

Pertama means “first” and pertama-tama means “first of all.” For modern speakers, there is no freely usable base tama to which productive per- can be attached. Treat the forms as lexicalized numeral vocabulary.

Ini pertama kalinya saya naik kapal malam.

This is my first time taking an overnight ship.

Peserta pertama sudah masuk ke ruang wawancara.

The first participant has entered the interview room.

Pertama-tama, pastikan semua data sudah dicadangkan.

First of all, make sure all the data has been backed up. (formal presentation)

The productive ordinal prefix is ke- in kedua, ketiga, and so on. Pertama fills the lexical “first” slot; it is not evidence that per- productively creates the rest of the ordinal series.

Division and rates: two neighboring numerical structures

The denominator form pertiga appears in fractions such as sepertiga “one third” and dua pertiga “two thirds.” This numeral-forming pattern is not the causative stem seen in perbesar.

Sepertiga peserta mengikuti sesi secara daring.

One third of the participants attend the session online.

Dua pertiga anggaran dialokasikan untuk biaya operasional.

Two thirds of the budget is allocated to operating costs. (formal)

Free per introduces a rate, unit, distribution, or effective date and is written separately.

Setiap peserta mendapat dua kupon per hari.

Each participant gets two coupons per day.

Kecepatan maksimum di jalan ini enam puluh kilometer per jam.

The maximum speed on this road is sixty kilometers per hour.

Berkas itu diperiksa satu per satu.

The files are checked one by one.

These uses contribute division or distribution, but they are synchronically distinct from derivational per-. In particular, satu per satu never means “unite.”

Opaque and falsely segmented words

Some larger per-containing families are lexicalized. Memperoleh means “obtain,” but modern speakers do not calculate that meaning from prepositional oleh “by.” Mempelajari means “study something,” with the exceptional pel- shape of the ajar family.

Tim memperoleh izin untuk mengakses arsip tersebut.

The team obtained permission to access the archive. (formal)

Mahasiswa mempelajari perubahan sosial di wilayah pesisir.

The students study social change in coastal areas. (academic)

Other words merely begin with the same letters. Pergi, perlu, and percaya are whole lexical bases for learners; analyzing them as productive per- + gi/lu/caya creates nonexistent bases and false meanings.

Kami perlu pergi sekarang karena kereta terakhir berangkat pukul sepuluh.

We need to leave now because the last train departs at ten.

Saya percaya dia akan menepati janjinya.

I believe she will keep her promise.

💡
A visible string per is only a clue. Test whether a real base and a live derivational relationship exist; if not, learn the whole word.

Common Mistakes

1. Attaching free rate per like a prefix

❌ Biaya pendaftarannya lima puluh ribu rupiah perorang.

Incorrect—rate per is a separate word, not the causative derivational prefix.

✅ Biaya pendaftarannya lima puluh ribu rupiah per orang.

The registration fee is fifty thousand rupiah per person.

2. Using a restricted stem as a finite active verb

❌ Perusahaan perbesar gudang itu tahun lalu.

Incorrect in careful Standard Indonesian—the finite actor-oriented verb needs memperbesar.

✅ Perusahaan memperbesar gudang itu tahun lalu.

The company enlarged that warehouse last year.

3. Joining the distributive phrase

❌ Perawat memanggil pasien satu persatu.

Incorrect spelling for ‘one by one’—this is free per, not bound persatu-.

✅ Perawat memanggil pasien satu per satu.

The nurse calls the patients one by one.

4. Treating pertama as a fully productive per- formation

❌ Peserta perdua masuk ke ruangan berikutnya.

Incorrect ordinal formation—per- does not productively build ‘second.’

✅ Peserta kedua masuk ke ruangan berikutnya.

The second participant enters the next room.

5. Translating memperoleh from the modern meaning of oleh

❌ Tim itu oleh izin setelah mengajukan permohonan.

Incorrect—oleh is not a free verb meaning ‘obtain.’

✅ Tim itu memperoleh izin setelah mengajukan permohonan.

The team obtained permission after submitting an application.

Key Takeaways

  • Transparent property families contribute causative degree change: memperbesar, memperpanjang, mempercepat.
  • Persatu- normally enters -kan formations meaning “unite into one whole.”
  • Ordering pertama, fractional pertiga, and free rate/distributive per belong to distinct lexical or grammatical patterns.
  • Modern productivity is strongest inside larger memper-/diper- templates and formal vocabulary, not in arbitrary standalone per- verbs.
  • Do not assign one English translation to visible per; identify the base, bracketing, and lexical family first.
