The most transparent memper- verbs mean “cause something to move along the scale named by the base.” Thus besar supplies a size scale and memperbesar foto moves a photo toward greater size. This idea explains a large productive core, but it does not mechanically predict every word beginning with memper.
This page maps meanings: causation, degree change, polysemy, and lexicalization. The neighboring formation guide handles spelling and allomorphy, while the usage guide handles valency, collocation, and register. Actual words such as memperbesar are written solid; memper- + besar is notation used only to display structure.
The core meaning: cause a property to increase
Compare a property predicate with its causative verb:
Ruang tunggunya sudah cukup besar.
The waiting room is already large enough.
Pengelola memperbesar ruang tunggu agar lebih banyak penumpang bisa duduk.
The management is enlarging the waiting room so that more passengers can sit down.
The adjective besar describes one participant. Memperbesar introduces a cause and presents the room as the entity whose property changes. With a gradable adjective, the recurring interpretation is approximately “cause to become more adjective.”
Jalur sepeda baru mempersempit ruang untuk parkir di tepi jalan.
The new bicycle lane reduces the space available for roadside parking.
Lampu tambahan memperjelas tulisan kecil di papan itu.
The additional light makes the small writing on that board clearer.
Lapisan karet memperkuat bagian bawah tas.
The rubber layer strengthens the bottom of the bag.
Here sempit, jelas, and kuat provide different scales. The prefix does not always mean English enlarge: English selects narrow, clarify, or strengthen according to the base and context.
The required three-root network
The same derivational schema supports several contextual readings:
besar "large" ───▶ memperbesar increase physical size, capacity, magnitude, or impact
panjang "long" ───▶ memperpanjang lengthen an object, duration, route, or period of validity
cepat "fast" ───▶ mempercepat increase speed or bring an event about soonerThese arrows show semantic inheritance, not English word-for-word translation. The base provides a dimension; the noun being changed determines how that dimension is understood.
Besar: size, capacity, and magnitude
Coba tekan dua kali untuk memperbesar foto ini.
Try double-tapping to enlarge this photo.
Rumah sakit akan memperbesar kapasitas ruang gawat darurat.
The hospital will increase the capacity of the emergency department. (formal)
Pernyataan tanpa bukti justru memperbesar kecurigaan warga.
An unsupported statement only heightens residents' suspicions.
The first object changes visual size; the second changes capacity; the third changes an abstract degree. English moves among enlarge, increase, and heighten, but Indonesian retains the common magnitude schema.
Panjang: physical length, duration, and validity
Tukang itu memperpanjang pipa sampai ke halaman belakang.
The worker is extending the pipe to the back yard.
Ketua rapat tidak ingin memperpanjang pembahasan yang sudah buntu.
The meeting chair does not want to prolong a discussion that has reached a dead end.
Saya harus memperpanjang SIM sebelum akhir bulan.
I have to renew my driver's license before the end of the month.
In memperpanjang SIM, the card does not become physically longer. The conventional reading is “extend the license's validity,” often translated as renew. This is regular semantic extension shaped by the object.
Cepat: speed and earlier completion
Pengemudi itu mempercepat kendaraan setelah keluar dari kawasan sekolah.
The driver sped up the vehicle after leaving the school zone.
Sistem antrean baru mempercepat pemeriksaan paspor.
The new queueing system speeds up passport checks.
Dokter mengubah jadwal terapi untuk mempercepat pemulihan pasien.
The doctor changed the therapy schedule to hasten the patient's recovery.
The patient need not literally move faster. Mempercepat pemulihan means causing recovery to reach its endpoint sooner. That event-timing reading follows naturally from the base's speed dimension.
Degree increase is not the same as becoming
Memper- is causative: something causes a change in something else. A simple property or an inchoative ber-/meN- verb can instead describe the entity's state or its change without adding an external causer.
Tulisan di layar itu terlalu kecil.
The text on the screen is too small.
Tulisan di layar membesar ketika saya mengetuk ikon itu.
The text on the screen grows larger when I tap that icon.
Ikon itu memperbesar tulisan di layar.
That icon enlarges the text on the screen.
English often uses get or become for the middle example and make for the last one. Indonesian encodes the contrast inside the predicate: membesar profiles the affected entity's change, while memperbesar profiles a cause acting on an object.
The same distinction appears with duration:
Barisan kendaraan memanjang sampai ke simpang berikutnya.
The line of vehicles extends as far as the next intersection.
Penutupan satu lajur memperpanjang barisan kendaraan sampai ke simpang berikutnya.
The closure of one lane lengthens the line of vehicles as far as the next intersection.
Productive adjective families
The schema is strongest with familiar gradable properties whose increase can affect an object. Common families include besar/kecil, panjang/pendek, luas/sempit, cepat/lambat, kuat/lemah, jelas, and indah.
Editor memperpendek judul agar muat dalam satu baris.
The editor shortens the title so that it fits on one line.
Pemerintah berencana memperluas layanan kereta hingga wilayah timur.
The government plans to extend rail service to the eastern area. (formal)
Contoh konkret dapat mempermudah pembaca memahami konsep ini.
Concrete examples can make it easier for readers to understand this concept.
Tanaman di teras memperindah bagian depan rumah.
The plants on the terrace beautify the front of the house.
Productivity is real but licensed, not automatic. Gradability helps because it supplies a scale, yet speakers also rely on established word families and collocations. There is no dependable algorithm that turns every adjective into a natural memper- verb.
Restricted factitive and lexical families
Some established verbs use a related factitive idea: the object is treated as, made into, or put in the role named by a noun. These families are much less freely productive.
Pengurus itu dituduh memperalat relawan untuk kepentingan pribadinya.
That organizer was accused of exploiting the volunteers for personal gain. (formal)
Raja itu memperbudak penduduk wilayah taklukannya.
The king enslaved the people of the conquered territory.
Memperalat is literally connected with alat “tool,” but in ordinary usage it often means “use or exploit someone as a tool.” Memperbudak is an established formation from budak “slave.” Their existence does not license inventions from every noun.
Dalam hikayat itu, sang raja memperistri putri dari kerajaan seberang.
In the tale, the king takes a princess from the kingdom across the sea as his wife. (literary)
Memperistri is an established, gender-specific verb most at home in (formal), historical, or (literary) narration. Everyday speakers normally express modern relationships with phrases such as menikahi “marry” or menjadikan ... istrinya, depending on the intended meaning.
Other families are opaque in present-day Indonesian:
Setelah melalui pemeriksaan, perusahaan itu memperoleh izin operasi.
After undergoing an inspection, the company obtained an operating permit. (formal)
Although memperoleh belongs historically to a larger oleh/peroleh family, a learner cannot derive its modern meaning “obtain” from the preposition oleh “by.” It must be learned as a lexical verb with its own object frame.
Polysemy is constrained by the object
A productive verb can still develop conventional object-specific readings. Memperpanjang paspor means renewing validity; memperbesar masalah means magnifying or worsening a problem; mempercepat tanggal keberangkatan means moving a date earlier.
Kalau memungkinkan, kami ingin mempercepat tanggal keberangkatan dua hari.
If possible, we would like to move the departure date two days earlier.
Menyebarkan kabar yang belum pasti hanya akan memperbesar masalah.
Spreading unconfirmed news will only make the problem worse.
These are not random idioms: each preserves an increase along a contextually available dimension. Nevertheless, natural translation and collocation must be learned from usage, not from a fixed gloss.
A note on form and r-initial bases
Meaning does not override allomorphy. Before an r-initial base such as rendah, the inner prefix-final r is absent while the root-initial r remains: meN- + per- + rendah → memperendah, not memperrendah.
Pemompaan air tanah yang berlebihan dapat memperendah permukaan tanah.
Excessive groundwater pumping can lower the ground surface. (formal)
The surface form is solid and has one r, supplied by rendah. The formation guide gives the complete analysis.
Common Mistakes
1. Giving every memper- verb the same English gloss
❌ Saya memperpanjang SIM berarti saya membuat kartunya lebih panjang.
Incorrect interpretation—memperpanjang SIM conventionally extends its validity; it does not lengthen the card.
✅ Saya memperpanjang SIM karena masa berlakunya hampir habis.
I am renewing my driver's license because it is about to expire.
2. Using a causative where only a change of state is meant
❌ Retakan itu memperpanjang hingga ujung dinding.
Incorrect—the crack is changing on its own in this clause, so causative memperpanjang lacks an object.
✅ Retakan itu memanjang hingga ujung dinding.
The crack extends to the end of the wall.
3. Adding an unnecessary English-style make
❌ Pembaruan ini membuat mempercepat pencarian data.
Incorrect double causation—mempercepat already contributes ‘make faster.’
✅ Pembaruan ini mempercepat pencarian data.
This update speeds up data searches.
4. Treating an opaque verb as freely compositional
❌ Panitia itu oleh persetujuan setelah mengajukan permohonan.
Incorrect—oleh is not a free verb meaning ‘obtain,’ and memperoleh is lexicalized.
✅ Panitia itu memperoleh persetujuan setelah mengajukan permohonan.
The committee obtained approval after submitting an application.
5. Restoring the deleted prefix-final r
❌ Kebijakan itu memperrendah biaya masuk.
Incorrect spelling—the prefix-final r is absent before the r-initial base rendah.
✅ Kebijakan itu memperendah biaya masuk.
That policy lowers the admission cost.
Key Takeaways
- The productive core of memper- causes an object to move along a gradable scale supplied by the base.
- Besar, panjang, and cepat extend naturally from physical dimensions to capacity, duration, validity, process speed, and event timing.
- Causative memperbesar contrasts with a property (besar) and a change centered on the affected entity (membesar).
- Noun-based and opaque families such as memperalat, memperistri, and memperoleh are lexically restricted.
- Translate the whole event in context; there is no single English word that represents memper- in every family.
