diper-: Meanings and Derivational Network

In its transparent core, diper- presents a patient as undergoing a caused change along the scale named by the base. Foto diperbesar says that the photo is caused to become larger; it is the patient-oriented counterpart of seseorang memperbesar foto. The same semantic architecture extends beyond literal dimensions into duration, capacity, intensity, and event timing.

This page maps that meaning network. The formation guide handles segmentation and allomorphy; the usage guide handles agents, competing constructions, valency, and register. Actual derivatives are written solid, while hyphens appear only in abstract labels such as diper-.

Patient-oriented causation

Compare the active and passive perspectives:

Editor memperbesar judul utama agar mudah dibaca.

The editor enlarges the main heading so that it is easy to read.

Judul utama diperbesar agar mudah dibaca.

The main heading is enlarged so that it is easy to read.

Both clauses describe a causer bringing about a change in the heading. The active clause makes editor the grammatical subject; the diper- clause makes judul utama, the affected entity, the subject or discourse topic. Omitting the agent does not remove causation from the meaning.

Kapasitas ruang tunggu diperbesar menjelang musim liburan.

The waiting room's capacity is increased ahead of the holiday season.

Jadwal pemeriksaan dipercepat karena kondisi pasien memburuk.

The examination schedule is brought forward because the patient's condition is deteriorating.

Unlike English become larger, diperbesar conventionally evokes an external cause, even when the sentence does not name it. A noncausative change normally uses another predicate, such as membesar.

💡
Read transparent diper- in two layers: “something causes a change” plus “the changing entity is the current viewpoint.” The omitted causer remains semantically available.

The required three-root network

besar "large" ───▶ diperbesar be made larger; have capacity, magnitude, or impact increased
panjang "long" ───▶ diperpanjang be lengthened; have duration or validity extended
cepat "fast" ───▶ dipercepat be made faster; be expedited or moved to an earlier time

The arrows express a shared derivational relationship, not three fixed English translations. Each base provides a scale, and the affected noun determines how that scale is construed.

Besar → diperbesar: size, capacity, and magnitude

Literal physical or visual size is the most concrete reading.

Foto keluarga itu diperbesar lalu dipasang di ruang tamu.

The family photo was enlarged and then hung in the living room.

Lubang ventilasi diperbesar beberapa sentimeter.

The ventilation opening is enlarged by a few centimeters.

With abstract objects, the same magnitude scale yields different English verbs:

Kapasitas produksi akan diperbesar secara bertahap.

Production capacity will be increased gradually. (formal)

Perbedaan kecil itu diperbesar oleh pemberitaan yang berlebihan.

That small difference was magnified by excessive media coverage.

Risiko kebakaran diperbesar oleh tumpukan bahan yang mudah terbakar.

The fire risk is heightened by piles of flammable material.

English selects enlarged, increased, magnified, or heightened. The Indonesian verb consistently profiles an increase toward besar, interpreted within the object's conceptual domain.

Panjang → diperpanjang: extension across dimensions

Physical length remains possible:

Pipa pembuangan diperpanjang sampai ke saluran utama.

The drainage pipe is extended to the main channel.

Time-related objects are even more frequent:

Jam operasional diperpanjang selama libur sekolah.

Operating hours are extended during the school holiday.

Kontrak sewa dapat diperpanjang untuk satu tahun berikutnya.

The lease can be extended for another year. (formal)

Paspor yang hampir habis masa berlakunya harus diperpanjang sebelum perjalanan.

A passport that is about to expire must be renewed before the trip.

The passport is not lengthened as an object. Diperpanjang targets its validity period, and English conventionally says renewed. The inference is systematic but tied to the noun and institutional practice.

Cepat → dipercepat: greater speed or earlier timing

With a moving entity or process, dipercepat increases speed:

Kereta dipercepat setelah jalur di depan dinyatakan aman.

The train is accelerated after the track ahead is declared safe.

Pemulihan data dipercepat dengan menggunakan server cadangan.

Data recovery is sped up by using a backup server.

With a scheduled event, the same verb can move the event earlier:

Rapat besok dipercepat dari pukul tiga menjadi pukul satu.

Tomorrow's meeting has been moved forward from three o'clock to one.

Pencairan dana dipercepat agar bantuan segera sampai kepada warga.

The release of funds is expedited so that aid reaches residents promptly. (formal)

The patient is not necessarily “fast” as a stable property. The causative event reduces the time required or advances an expected endpoint.

The base selects the direction of change

Diper- itself does not always mean “increase.” The base supplies the direction. Besar leads toward larger, but kecil leads toward smaller; kuat toward stronger, but lemah toward weaker.

Ukuran berkas diperkecil agar mudah dikirim lewat surel.

The file size is reduced so that it can be sent easily by email.

Fondasi bangunan diperkuat setelah retakan ditemukan.

The building's foundation was reinforced after cracks were found.

Pengawasan justru diperlemah oleh aturan yang tidak jelas.

Oversight was actually weakened by unclear regulations. (formal)

Penjelasan itu diperjelas dengan dua contoh tambahan.

That explanation is clarified with two additional examples.

Consequently, be made more is only a learning paraphrase: it is not a word that must appear in every natural English translation.

Productive scales and conventional extensions

The most productive families have gradable bases and a plausible affected dimension: luas, sempit, tinggi, rendah, kuat, lemah, mudah, sulit, jelas, and similar properties.

Cakupan penelitian diperluas hingga mencakup wilayah pesisir.

The scope of the study is broadened to include coastal areas. (academic)

Persyaratan masuk dipermudah bagi pelamar dari daerah terpencil.

Entry requirements are eased for applicants from remote areas. (formal)

Masalah sederhana itu diperumit oleh terlalu banyak prosedur.

That simple problem is complicated by too many procedures.

In diperumit, the prefix-final r of inner per- is absent before the root-initial r of rumit. The spelling reflects allomorphy; the meaning still follows the “cause to become more complex” schema.

Productivity nevertheless depends on conventional lexical licensing. A conceivable scale does not guarantee that speakers accept a new diper- verb. When no established family exists, Indonesian can use dibuat lebih + adjective.

Ruang layanan dibuat lebih ramah bagi pengguna kursi roda.

The service area is made more accessible and welcoming for wheelchair users.

💡
A transparent meaning is a hypothesis, not proof that the word is established. Confirm the family and its normal objects before using a newly encountered or newly coined diper- form.

Restricted factitive and lexicalized readings

Some established families cannot be reduced to a property scale. They may retain a broad factitive relation or become substantially lexicalized.

Relawan muda itu merasa diperalat untuk kepentingan politik.

The young volunteer felt exploited for political purposes.

Penduduk desa diperbudak dan dipaksa bekerja di perkebunan.

The villagers were enslaved and forced to work on the plantation.

Diperalat is connected with alat “tool”: the patient is treated as an instrument for someone else's ends. Diperbudak presents the patient as being reduced to or treated as a slave. These are established lexical families, not templates that accept any arbitrary noun.

Dalam naskah lama itu, sang putri diperistri oleh raja dari negeri seberang.

In that old text, the princess is taken as wife by a king from a distant land. (literary)

Diperistri is gender-specific and strongly marked (literary) or historical in this use. It should not be presented as a neutral modern synonym for every kind of marriage.

At the opaque end stands diperoleh “be obtained.”

Data tersebut diperoleh melalui wawancara mendalam dengan dua puluh responden.

The data were obtained through in-depth interviews with twenty respondents. (academic)

Keuntungan yang diperoleh tahun ini akan diinvestasikan kembali.

The profit obtained this year will be reinvested. (formal)

Its modern meaning is not computed from free oleh “by.” Learn memperoleh/diperoleh as an active-passive lexical pair.

Passive morphology can expose a hidden family

An independent per- stem is often uncommon as a finite declarative verb. Speakers readily use memperbesar and diperbesar, while bare perbesar is most natural as a directive. The passive therefore reveals a causative family even when the intermediate stem is not freely distributed.

Perbesar diagramnya sebelum presentasi dimulai.

Enlarge the diagram before the presentation begins.

Diagram itu sudah diperbesar untuk presentasi.

The diagram has already been enlarged for the presentation.

Formal lexical families make the point even more clearly. Diperlakukan “be treated” corresponds to memperlakukan, not to an everyday finite verb perlakukan except as a directive; dipertimbangkan “be considered” belongs to a larger suffixed family.

Semua pelamar harus diperlakukan secara adil.

All applicants must be treated fairly. (formal)

Usulan tersebut akan dipertimbangkan dalam rapat berikutnya.

The proposal will be considered at the next meeting. (formal)

These suffixed words lie in the wider per- network. Their endings and complement patterns must be preserved; they are not freely shortened to bare diper- forms.

Common Mistakes

1. Assigning the physical gloss “enlarged” everywhere

❌ Risiko kecelakaan diperbesar berarti ukuran risikonya dibuat lebih besar secara fisik.

Incorrect interpretation—here diperbesar means that the degree of risk is increased.

✅ Risiko kecelakaan diperbesar oleh penerangan jalan yang buruk.

The accident risk is heightened by poor street lighting.

2. Confusing passive causation with spontaneous change

❌ Noda itu diperbesar setiap hari tanpa ada penyebabnya.

Poor choice for a stain simply growing—the passive evokes an external cause.

✅ Noda itu membesar setiap hari meskipun sudah dibersihkan.

The stain gets bigger every day even though it has been cleaned.

3. Treating diperpanjang as literal physical length in every context

❌ Paspor saya diperpanjang, jadi kartunya sekarang lebih panjang.

Incorrect interpretation—renewing a passport extends validity, not physical length.

✅ Paspor saya sudah diperpanjang untuk lima tahun lagi.

My passport has been renewed for another five years.

4. Deriving diperoleh from the preposition oleh

❌ Informasi itu di-oleh dari internet.

Incorrect—diperoleh is a lexical verb and is written as one word.

✅ Informasi itu diperoleh dari situs resmi.

That information was obtained from the official website.

5. Restoring the deleted prefix-final r

❌ Prosedurnya diperrumit tanpa alasan.

Incorrect spelling—the prefix-final r is absent before the r-initial base rumit.

✅ Prosedurnya diperumit tanpa alasan.

The procedure was made more complicated for no reason.

Key Takeaways

  • Transparent diper- presents the affected entity while retaining an external causative interpretation.
  • The base supplies both the dimension and direction of change: diperbesar increases size, while diperkecil decreases it.
  • Context maps a common scale onto distinct readings such as physical enlargement, renewed validity, faster processing, or earlier scheduling.
  • Gradable property families form the productive core; diperalat, diperistri, and diperoleh belong to restricted or lexicalized families.
  • Passive forms can make a causative family visible even when its inner per- stem is uncommon as an independent finite verb.
