Bounded and reciprocal event nouns
Many per-...-an nouns relate to intransitive or reciprocal ber- events: bertemu → pertemuan, bercakap-cakap → percakapan, berkelahi → perkelahian, berjanji → perjanjian. The noun treats the event as a countable, discussable whole or as its socially recognized result.

Journeys, courses, and temporal extension
Perjalanan packages movement as a bounded course with an origin, destination, duration, route, or traveler. Abstract domains extend that path image to lives, careers, institutions, illnesses, and projects.

These are not plural nouns meaning “many farms/banks/hotels/books.” They conceptualize a network of activities, institutions, people, and practices as one domain.
Places, institutions, and collective regions
Other families package a place or collection spatially. Perpustakaan is a library, perumahan a housing development or housing sector, perkantoran an office district/complex, persawahan an expanse of rice fields, perairan a body or region of waters, and permukiman a settlement area.
Bus itu berhenti di depan kompleks perumahan baru.
The bus stops in front of the new housing development.
Kawasan perkantoran mulai sepi setelah pukul enam.
The office district begins to empty out after six.
Kabut tipis menutupi daerah persawahan pada pagi hari.

The collective reading does not mechanically arise with every place noun. These are established formations whose scale and reference must be learned. Perumahan may refer to the housing field in one context and a particular residential development in another.
Rules, systems, and organized outcomes
Peraturan, persyaratan, perjanjian, and persatuan profile institutionalized or organized outcomes. They contrast with nearby process nouns even when English translations overlap.
Pelamar harus memenuhi semua persyaratan sebelum batas waktu.
Applicants must meet all requirements before the deadline. (formal)

Productive patterns coexist with meanings stored in whole words. Perhatian means attention or concern, peringatan a warning/reminder/commemoration, and perusahaan a company or enterprise. Their modern readings are not predictable by attaching a generic “domain” meaning to hati, ingat, or usaha.
