Event, Process, and Result Nouns

Indonesian can package a situation as a process, a bounded event, a domain, or the result of an action. Pembangunan profiles building as a process, pertemuan profiles an occasion on which participants meet, tulisan profiles something written, and underived rapat names a meeting event. These nouns can retain the participants and circumstances of the corresponding action.

The nominalizer is therefore not a decorative equivalent of an English suffix such as -tion or -ment. It helps select an argument perspective: what is foregrounded as the nominal head, how the affected entity follows it, and how an actor or other participant is introduced. This page explains those contrasts; the nominalization overview develops the full system.

peN-an: process viewed as an organized activity

The circumfix represented as peN-...-an often forms a noun that profiles an action or process. Its nasal prefix changes shape according to the base; with bangun, the established form is pembangunan, not penbangunan. In contemporary usage, pembangunan can mean construction or development.

Pembangunan jembatan itu berlangsung selama hampir tiga tahun.

The construction of that bridge lasted for almost three years.

Pembangunan jembatan oleh pemerintah daerah dimulai bulan depan.

Construction of the bridge by the regional government begins next month.

The nominalized process retains two participants from “the government builds the bridge.” Jembatan is the entity built and follows pembangunan directly; the actor pemerintah daerah is introduced with oleh. The process noun can itself be subject of berlangsung “take place/last” or dimulai “be begun.”

Other peN-an nouns show similar event structure: penulisan laporan “the writing of the report,” pengiriman barang “the sending of goods,” and pemeriksaan pasien “the examination of a patient.” Their exact lexical meanings are not mechanically predictable, but they commonly keep the affected participant close to the nominal head.

Penulisan laporan akhir membutuhkan data dari semua cabang.

Writing the final report requires data from every branch.

💡
With a process noun, ask which participant undergoes or defines the process. It commonly follows the noun directly: pembangunan jembatan, penulisan laporan, pengiriman barang.

per-an: event, collective activity, or domain

Forms with per-...-an frequently name an event in which participants come into a relation, or a broader sphere of activity or location. Pertemuan is a meeting or encounter; perdagangan is trade as a field of activity; perumahan is housing or a housing area. This family is semantically diverse, so no single English suffix predicts it.

Pertemuan antara kedua menteri berlangsung tertutup.

The meeting between the two ministers took place behind closed doors.

Pertemuan tim kami dengan warga dijadwalkan ulang untuk hari Jumat.

Our team's meeting with residents has been rescheduled for Friday.

In the first example, antara presents two coordinated participants. In the second, tim kami anchors one side of the meeting and dengan warga introduces the other. The noun does not inherit a single “object”; it organizes a reciprocal event around co-participants.

Perdagangan daring berkembang pesat selama beberapa tahun terakhir.

Online commerce has grown rapidly over the past several years.

Here perdagangan names a domain of activity rather than one bounded trading event. Lexical convention determines whether a per-an form is mainly eventive, locative, collective, or domain-denoting. This genuine irregularity must be learned with each high-frequency noun.

-an: result, product, or thing associated with an action

The suffix -an often yields a result or product. Tulisan can mean a piece of writing, text, or someone's written work; kiriman is something sent; bangunan is a constructed structure. These nouns direct attention away from the unfolding process and toward what exists because of it.

Tulisan itu membahas perubahan iklim di kota-kota pesisir.

That article discusses climate change in coastal cities.

Tulisan Maya tentang pendidikan diterbitkan di jurnal nasional.

Maya's article about education was published in a national journal.

In tulisan Maya, Maya is interpreted as author or possessor; tentang pendidikan gives the topic. Compare a verbal clause such as Maya menulis artikel tentang pendidikan, which presents Maya as actor. Nominalization keeps the semantic relation but packages it as modification inside a noun phrase.

Tulisannya sudah selesai, tetapi belum diperiksa oleh editor.

Her writing is finished, but it hasn't been checked by the editor yet.

Attached -nya in tulisannya can identify the author or a contextually salient text. Do not write tulisan nya.

The process/result contrast is especially clear with one base:

FormPerspectiveExample meaning
membangunverbal actionto build
pembangunanprocess/activityconstruction, development
bangunanresult/entitybuilding, structure

Pembangunan gedung itu selesai, tetapi bangunannya belum boleh digunakan.

Construction of the building is complete, but the structure cannot be used yet.

💡
English may translate both pembangunan and bangunan with words related to build. Indonesian distinguishes the unfolding process from its resulting structure.

Underived event nouns: rapat

Not every event noun is visibly nominalized. Rapat is an ordinary lexical noun meaning “meeting,” though rapat also has an adjective/adverb use meaning “close/tightly” in other contexts. As an event noun, it accepts participants, topic phrases, time expressions, and event predicates.

Rapat direksi dimulai pukul sembilan tepat.

The board meeting starts at exactly nine.

Rapat dengan pemasok membahas kenaikan biaya bahan baku.

The meeting with suppliers discusses the rise in raw-material costs.

Setelah rapat selesai, kami langsung mengirim hasilnya kepada semua peserta.

After the meeting ended, we immediately sent its outcome to all participants.

Rapat direksi identifies the institutional participants or owner of the meeting; dengan pemasok introduces another participant; the main clause can then resume the event with attached hasilnya.

Participant perspectives side by side

Noun phraseHead perspectiveRetained participants
pembangunan jembatan oleh pemerintahconstruction processbuilt entity + actor
pertemuan menteri dengan wargareciprocal eventtwo participant sides
tulisan Maya tentang pendidikanwritten productauthor + topic
rapat direksi mengenai anggaranlexical meeting eventinstitutional participants + topic

This is the central insight: nominalization does not erase event structure. It reorganizes it. Indonesian lets affected entities, authors, actors, co-participants, and topics remain visible through noun-noun order and prepositional phrases.

In formal, bureaucratic, journalistic, and academic writing, long strings of event nouns are common. Everyday informal speech often chooses a verb instead because the actor and action are easier to follow. Neither style is inherently superior; the register and information focus differ.

Common Mistakes

1. Confusing process and result

❌ Bangunan jembatan itu berlangsung selama tiga tahun.

Incorrect for the intended process — bangunan denotes the resulting structure.

✅ Pembangunan jembatan itu berlangsung selama tiga tahun.

Construction of the bridge lasted three years.

2. Choosing a nominalizer from an English suffix

❌ Konstruksian jembatan itu dimulai bulan depan.

Incorrect calque — an English-looking noun ending does not select an Indonesian nominalizer.

✅ Pembangunan jembatan itu dimulai bulan depan.

Construction of the bridge begins next month.

3. Leaving participant relations ambiguous

❌ Pembangunan pemerintah mendapat protes warga.

Ambiguous — this can suggest development of the government rather than development carried out by it.

✅ Pembangunan proyek oleh pemerintah mendapat protes warga.

The government's construction of the project drew protests from residents.

4. Spacing an attached clitic

❌ Tulisan nya diterbitkan minggu lalu.

Incorrect — -nya attaches to tulisan.

✅ Tulisannya diterbitkan minggu lalu.

Her article was published last week.

Key Takeaways

  • peN-an commonly profiles a process: pembangunan jembatan.
  • per-an can profile an event or domain: pertemuan, perdagangan.
  • -an commonly profiles a result or product: tulisan, bangunan.
  • Underived rapat is a full event noun with participants and topics.
  • Nominalizers preserve different argument perspectives; never choose one merely by matching an English suffix.
