The circumfix ke-...-an often builds an abstract noun from a quality or state: baik → kebaikan “goodness/kindness,” sehat → kesehatan “health,” and hadir → kehadiran “presence/attendance.” But the same visible template also appears in predicates such as kedinginan “be uncomfortably cold.” A learner who translates every form as English -ness will miss both its category and its event perspective.
This page covers abstract, stative, affected-experience, and lexicalized ke-...-an forms in contemporary Standard Indonesian. It leaves full derivational paradigms, individual classifier systems, and address etiquette to their dedicated pages. EYD V writes the circumfix as one word around its base; -ku, -mu, -nya attach to the complete word, and hyphens belong only to genuine reduplication.
Quality nouns from adjectives
With many adjective bases, ke-...-an names the quality, condition, or degree associated with that adjective. These derived forms behave as nouns: they can head a noun phrase, take a possessor, and serve as a subject or object.
| Base | Derived noun | Typical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| baik | kebaikan | goodness; kindness; a good deed or benefit |
| sehat | kesehatan | health |
| adil | keadilan | justice; fairness |
| jelas | kejelasan | clarity |
| indah | keindahan | beauty |
Kebaikan kecil itu sangat berarti bagi keluarga mereka.
That small act of kindness meant a great deal to their family.
Kesehatan mental sama pentingnya dengan kesehatan fisik.
Mental health is as important as physical health.
Kejelasan informasi membantu warga mengambil keputusan.
The clarity of the information helps residents make decisions. (formal)
The English translation need not contain -ness. Kesehatan is normally “health,” not “healthiness,” and keadilan is “justice/fairness.” Kebaikan is partly lexicalized: in context it can name the abstract quality of goodness, kindness toward someone, a particular good deed, or a positive benefit.
Saya tidak akan melupakan kebaikannya kepada keluarga saya.
I will not forget his or her kindness to my family.
The clitic -nya attaches to the whole noun: kebaikannya, never kebaikan-nya or kebaikan nya.
State and status nouns from other bases
The base need not be a simple adjective. Ke-...-an can form nouns for presence, life, membership, leadership, and other statuses or conditions.
Kehadiran semua anggota diperlukan untuk mengambil keputusan.
The presence of all members is required to make a decision. (formal)
Kehadiranmu membuat suasana rapat lebih tenang.
Your presence made the atmosphere at the meeting calmer.
Keanggotaan klub itu berlaku selama satu tahun.
Membership in that club is valid for one year.
Kehidupan di desa itu berubah setelah jalan baru dibuka.
Life in that village changed after the new road opened.
Kehadiran packages the fact or state of being present as a noun. It can mean presence or attendance depending on context. Kehadiranmu is one solid word because -mu follows the complete derived noun. Keanggotaan and kehidupan show that a simple English -ness paraphrase cannot cover the pattern.
Negation can be built inside certain abstract nouns with ketidak-...-an, as in ketidakadilan “injustice,” ketidakpastian “uncertainty,” and ketidakhadiran “absence.” These are written solid.
Ketidakhadirannya belum dijelaskan kepada panitia.
His or her absence has not yet been explained to the committee. (formal)
This form contains both the negative element and attached -nya, yet standard spelling keeps the entire word solid: ketidakhadirannya.
Affected experiences: the same form, a different construction
Some ke-...-an forms are predicates meaning that the subject undergoes an unintended, excessive, or otherwise affecting experience. They are not abstract nouns in that use.
Kami kedinginan karena lupa membawa jaket.
We were freezing because we forgot to bring jackets.
Mereka kehujanan dalam perjalanan pulang.
They got caught in the rain on the way home.
Dia ketiduran di kereta dan melewatkan stasiunnya.
He or she accidentally fell asleep on the train and missed the stop.
Kami kemalaman di jalan karena mobil mogok.
We ended up being out too late because the car broke down.
In these sentences, the subject is affected rather than a deliberate agent. Kedinginan is not “coldness”; it predicates an uncomfortable degree of cold. Kehujanan presents rain as something that happened to the travelers. Ketiduran adds an accidental “dozed off” perspective that bare tidur does not.
These predicates are neutral and common in everyday speech. In a highly formal incident report, a writer may choose a more explicit paraphrase, but the forms themselves are standard. The complete argument and voice behavior is treated on the ke-...-an voice overview.
Excess and lexical ambiguity
Affected ke-...-an can also mean that a property exceeds what is suitable. Kebesaran can mean “too big” when predicated of clothing, yet it has established noun meanings such as “greatness” or ceremonial insignia in other contexts.
Sepatu ini kebesaran untuk saya.
These shoes are too big for me.
Anak-anak kepanasan di dalam kamar itu pada siang hari.
The children get uncomfortably hot in that room during the day.
Museum itu menyimpan tanda kebesaran kerajaan.
The museum keeps the kingdom's ceremonial insignia. (formal/historical)
The visible sequence ke + besar + an does not choose one meaning by itself. Syntax and collocation distinguish predicate sepatu ini kebesaran from noun phrase tanda kebesaran. This is why a mechanical morpheme-by-morpheme translation fails.
Lexicalization goes further in words such as kesempatan “opportunity” and keterangan “information/explanation.” Their current meanings cannot be reliably generated as simple “state of sempat” or “state of terang.” There is no honest shortcut: learn frequent ke-...-an words as vocabulary while retaining the pattern as a recognition aid.
Saya belum mendapat kesempatan untuk berbicara dengannya.
I have not yet had an opportunity to speak with him or her.
Petugas meminta keterangan tambahan dari saksi.
The officer requested additional information from the witness. (formal)
Competition with other nominalizers
Different circumfixes can share a base or semantic field while selecting different facets. Ke-...-an usually profiles a state or quality; peN-...-an or per-...-an may profile an action, intervention, or change.
| State/quality noun | Process/intervention noun | Contrast |
|---|---|---|
| kebaikan | perbaikan | goodness/kindness versus repair or improvement |
| kesehatan | penyehatan | health versus the process of making healthy |
| keamanan | pengamanan | safety/security versus an act or operation of securing |
| kehadiran | penghadiran | presence/attendance versus formally causing someone or something to be present |
Perbaikan jalan itu dijadwalkan selesai bulan depan.
The road repair is scheduled to finish next month.
Pengamanan lokasi ditingkatkan sebelum acara dimulai.
Security at the site was increased before the event began. (formal)
Kebaikan jalan would mean a road’s goodness if an unusual context supported it; it does not name road repair. Keamanan lokasi is the state of the site being secure, while pengamanan lokasi is the operation undertaken to secure it. Nominalizers choose different event structures, not stylistic variants of one English noun.
Formation and spelling
The standard form is written as a single word: ke + sehat + an → kesehatan, ke + hadir + an → kehadiran. Vowel sequences remain visible where required, as in bahagia → kebahagiaan and setia → kesetiaan. Ordinary Indonesian does not add accent marks to explain their pronunciation.
Not every conceivable base freely accepts ke-...-an, and an attested form may have a specialized meaning. Check a current dictionary rather than inventing a noun for every English -ness, -ity, or -cy word. Detailed formation is covered on the ke-...-an formation page.
Common Mistakes
❌ Saya mempunyai kedinginan sejak tadi pagi.
Incorrect — kedinginan is normally an affected-experience predicate, not a possessed abstract noun.
✅ Saya kedinginan sejak tadi pagi.
I have been freezing since this morning.
❌ Kami mengagumi kebaikan pemandangan dari puncak itu.
Wrong lexical choice — kebaikan means goodness/kindness, not visual beauty.
✅ Kami mengagumi keindahan pemandangan dari puncak itu.
We admired the beauty of the view from the summit.
❌ Pemerintah mempercepat kebaikan jalan utama.
Wrong facet — road work is an improvement or repair, not abstract goodness.
✅ Pemerintah mempercepat perbaikan jalan utama.
The government is accelerating repairs to the main road.
❌ Kehadiran-mu sangat penting bagi tim.
Incorrect spelling — -mu attaches directly to the complete derived noun.
✅ Kehadiranmu sangat penting bagi tim.
Your presence is very important to the team.
❌ Ketidak adilan itu memicu protes.
Incorrect spelling — ketidakadilan is one derived word.
✅ Ketidakadilan itu memicu protes.
That injustice sparked protests.
