Nominalization turns a root or an event description into something a noun phrase can name: a participant, instrument, product, process, result, state, or quality. Indonesian has several productive patterns, but they are not interchangeable wrappers. Penulis names a writer, tulisan a piece of writing, and penulisan the process or manner of writing; each selects a different facet of the same event.
This page gives an overview of peN-, -an, ke-...-an, peN-...-an, per-...-an, and zero-marked nominal uses in contemporary Standard Indonesian. It leaves full allomorphy and derivational paradigms, as well as individual classifier systems and address etiquette, to their dedicated pages. Derived forms are written solid under EYD V, clitics attach directly, and hyphens are reserved for genuine reduplication.
One root can support several perspectives
English often translates Indonesian derived nouns with -er, -ing, -tion, -ment, -ness, or an unrelated lexical word. Those endings are translation outcomes, not recipes. Start with the event and ask what the sentence needs to name.
| Facet selected | Typical Indonesian pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| actor or instrument | peN- | penulis | writer |
| product, object, or result | -an | tulisan | written text; writing |
| quality or state | ke-...-an | kejelasan | clarity |
| event or process | peN-...-an | penulisan | the writing process |
| event, domain, or development | per-...-an | pertemuan | meeting |
Penulis itu sedang memperbaiki tulisannya.
The writer is revising his or her text.
Penulisan laporan itu memerlukan data tambahan.
Writing the report requires additional data. (formal)
The clitic in tulisannya attaches directly. Penulis, tulisan, and penulisan are not long and short versions of the same noun: they identify a participant, a product, and an event/process.
peN-: actors and instruments
The prefix conventionally written peN- commonly forms an actor or instrument associated with a corresponding meN- verb. Its visible form changes with the base: penulis “writer,” pembaca “reader,” pengajar “teacher/instructor,” and penyaring “filter.” The capital N is linguistic notation for the changing nasal, not a letter written inside actual words.
Pengajar baru itu menjelaskan aturan kelas dengan jelas.
The new instructor explained the class rules clearly.

Penyaring airnya harus diganti setiap enam bulan.
Its water filter must be replaced every six months.
The semantic range is not limited to people: pembuka can be an opener or opening element, while penyaring can be a device. Nor can every verb freely produce a predictable peN- noun. The full sound alternations and lexical restrictions belong on the peN- meaning page.
-an: products, objects, results, and conventional nouns
The suffix -an often names something produced, affected, consumed, or conventionally associated with the root. Tulisan is written material, makanan is food, minuman is a drink, and ajaran can mean teaching or doctrine.
Tulisan di papan itu sudah tidak terbaca.
The writing on the board is no longer legible.
Makanan ini dibuat tanpa gula tambahan.
This food was made without added sugar.
Ajarannya masih dipelajari oleh para pengikutnya.
His or her teachings are still studied by the followers.
The result is frequently lexicalized. Makanan is not simply “the act of eating”; it normally names what is eaten. Learners therefore need the meaning of the completed word, not just a gloss for -an. In ajarannya and pengikutnya, -nya attaches to the entire derived noun.
ke-...-an: qualities and states
The circumfix ke-...-an commonly turns an adjective or another base into a quality, condition, or abstract state: baik → kebaikan “goodness/kindness,” sehat → kesehatan “health,” jelas → kejelasan “clarity.” It also has affected-experience uses that are not abstract nouns, so “English -ness” is only a first approximation.
Kejelasan petunjuk itu sangat membantu pengguna baru.
The clarity of those instructions greatly helps new users. (formal)
Kesehatan pekerja menjadi prioritas utama perusahaan.
Worker health is the company's main priority. (formal)
The dedicated abstract ke-...-an page develops the contrast between qualities, states, lexicalized meanings, and forms such as kedinginan “be uncomfortably cold.”
peN-...-an: an event, process, or its result
PeN-...-an often names the event, process, manner, or result associated with a transitive meN- verb. Compare menulis “write” with penulisan “writing,” membaca “read” with pembacaan “reading,” and mengajar “teach” with pengajaran “teaching/instruction.”
Pembacaan putusan dijadwalkan pada Jumat pagi.
The reading of the verdict is scheduled for Friday morning. (formal/legal)
Pengajaran bahasa memerlukan contoh yang alami dan jelas.
Language teaching requires natural, clear examples. (formal/academic)
Pembangunan jembatan itu berlangsung selama dua tahun.
The construction of that bridge took two years.
The pattern can become lexicalized as an institution, place, product, or conventional activity. Pembangunan can refer to construction or broader development, depending on context. Do not assume that the entire range follows from one English suffix.
per-...-an: events, domains, relations, and developments
Per-...-an commonly forms nouns connected with a ber- verb or another relational/processual base: bertemu → pertemuan “meeting,” berjalan → perjalanan “journey,” berdagang → perdagangan “trade,” and berkembang → perkembangan “development.” The relationship is useful, but individual words are established lexical items rather than the output of one perfect formula.
Pertemuan dengan klien berlangsung lebih singkat daripada perkiraan.
The meeting with the client was shorter than expected.
Perjalanan kami tertunda karena cuaca buruk.
Our journey was delayed because of bad weather.
Perkembangan teknologi itu mengubah cara orang bekerja.
That technological development changed how people work. (formal)
Both perkembangan and pembangunan can translate English “development,” but they select different events. Perkembangan anak is the child’s growth or development; pembangunan sekolah is the construction or planned development of a school. English cannot choose the Indonesian affix for you.
The ajar family: six forms, six facets
The ajar family shows why nominalization must be learned as a network. The root ajar relates broadly to teaching, learning, and instruction, but the derived words distribute roles and event perspectives differently.
| Form | Facet | Typical meaning and register |
|---|---|---|
| ajar | lexical root/basic noun | instruction or teaching; uncommon alone in everyday speech |
| pelajar | learner participant | school student/learner; neutral, often institutional |
| pengajar | teaching participant | teacher or instructor; neutral/formal |
| pelajaran | content or scheduled unit | lesson or school subject |
| pengajaran | teaching event/system | teaching or instruction; formal/academic |
| pembelajaran | learning process | learning process or designed learning interaction; educational/formal |
Para pelajar menunggu pengajar mereka di depan kelas.
The students are waiting for their instructor outside the classroom.
Pelajaran pertama hari ini adalah matematika.
The first lesson today is mathematics.
Pengajaran yang baik membantu proses pembelajaran siswa.
Good teaching supports students' learning process. (formal/academic)
Pelajar and pelajaran contain a lexicalized pel- shape; pengajar and pengajaran show peng-; pembelajaran has its own conventional morphology and educational meaning. Forms such as penajar and penbelajaran are not created by simply pasting an invariant prefix onto ajar or belajar. The allomorphy is genuinely demanding and deserves separate study.
Zero-marked nominal uses
Not every noun-like expression has a visible nominalizer. Indonesian roots and phrases can be category-flexible, and a verb phrase can occupy a subject-like nominal position without acquiring an affix. This is sometimes called zero derivation or zero-marked nominal use, though grammatical analyses differ on whether every case is a lexical noun or a nominally used clause.
Belajar membutuhkan waktu dan kesabaran.
Learning requires time and patience.
Makan siang sudah siap.
Lunch is ready.
The absence of an affix does not imply absence of structure. Belajar retains its activity meaning, while the lexicalized expression makan siang can name lunch. In formal prose, an overt event noun may make relations clearer: proses pembelajaran membutuhkan waktu.
Why English -tion is not a rule
English -tion nouns translate according to meaning: “education” is often pendidikan, “construction” may be pembangunan or the established loan konstruksi, “meeting” is pertemuan, and “clarification” may be penjelasan. Indonesian chooses a lexical family and an event facet; it does not replace -tion with one fixed circumfix.
Nominalization is especially dense in formal, bureaucratic, and academic writing. Everyday speech often prefers a finite verb: formal pelaksanaan evaluasi may become conversational kami mengevaluasi “we evaluate.” Both are grammatical; the difference is information packaging and register.
Common Mistakes
❌ Penajar itu memberi kami tugas tambahan.
Incorrect formation — the standard actor noun from mengajar is pengajar.
✅ Pengajar itu memberi kami tugas tambahan.
The instructor gave us an additional assignment.
❌ Pengajaran itu menjelaskan aturan baru kepada kelas.
Wrong for the intended actor — pengajaran is teaching/instruction, not the person who teaches.
✅ Pengajar itu menjelaskan aturan baru kepada kelas.
The instructor explained the new rule to the class.
❌ Pelajar hari ini membahas energi terbarukan.
Wrong for the intended meaning ‘today's lesson’ — pelajar means student/learner.
✅ Pelajaran hari ini membahas energi terbarukan.
Today's lesson discusses renewable energy.
❌ Pembangunan tubuh anak itu sesuai dengan usianya.
Wrong facet for the child's physical growth — pembangunan suggests deliberate building or planned development.
✅ Perkembangan tubuh anak itu sesuai dengan usianya.
The child's physical development is appropriate for his or her age.
❌ Program penbelajaran daring dimulai besok.
Incorrect — peN- is not an invariant string that can simply be attached before belajar.
✅ Program pembelajaran daring dimulai besok.
The online learning program begins tomorrow.
