The suffix -an forms nouns associated with what a base characteristically produces, affects, uses, locates, or groups. That broad association explains why tulisan is writing, makanan is food, mainan is a toy, and parkiran is a parking area (informal)—but it does not supply one fixed meaning. This page maps that semantic network; formation and spelling and syntactic and register choices are treated separately.
The organizing idea: a conventional associate of the base
A useful first paraphrase is “a conventional thing, result, place, or grouping associated with the base.” It is intentionally broad. The base contributes the activity or property, while Indonesian usage conventionalizes the relationship.
tulis ── + -an ──> tulisan text / handwriting / inscription
makan ── + -an ──> makanan food / dish / food category
main ── + -an ──> mainan toy / plaything
parkir ── + -an ──> parkiran parking area (informal)The diagram is morphological analysis, so it displays -an with a hyphen. The finished words are solid.
Saya membaca tulisan tentang sejarah pasar itu.
I read an article about the history of that market.
Tulisan pada batu itu sulit dikenali.
The inscription on the stone is difficult to identify.
Makanan di warung ini pedas, tetapi rasanya enak.
The food at this food stall is spicy but tastes good.
Dokter menyarankan makanan yang rendah garam.
The doctor recommends foods that are low in salt.
Mainan kayu itu dibuat oleh perajin setempat.
That wooden toy was made by a local craftsperson.
Masalah keselamatan bukan mainan.
Safety is not a game or plaything.
Aku menunggumu di parkiran belakang, ya.
I'll wait for you in the back parking area, okay? (informal)
Each full sentence selects a reading. Tulisan pada batu favors an inscription; tulisan tentang sejarah favors a text. Makanan rendah garam denotes a category, while makanan di warung can denote the dishes served there. Context does work that an English suffix or dictionary gloss cannot do alone.
Products and results
The most productive cluster names something produced, created, selected, cooked, sent, or otherwise left by an event. English translations range across writing, painting, choice, dish, shipment, and many unrelated nouns.
| Base | -an noun | Conventional relation |
|---|---|---|
| tulis “write” | tulisan | written product or visible writing |
| lukis “paint” | lukisan | painting |
| pilih “choose” | pilihan | choice or option |
| masak “cook” | masakan | dish or someone's cooking |
| kirim “send” | kiriman | something sent |
Lukisan itu terjual sebelum pameran dibuka untuk umum.
The painting sold before the exhibition opened to the public.
Kami punya dua pilihan: berangkat sekarang atau menunggu besok.
We have two choices: leave now or wait until tomorrow.
Masakan ayah paling enak kalau dimakan selagi hangat.
Dad's cooking tastes best when eaten warm.
Kiriman dari Surabaya tertahan karena cuaca buruk.
The shipment from Surabaya was held up because of bad weather.
Even this cluster contains different relations. A lukisan is created by painting; a pilihan may be the option available or the outcome of choosing; a kiriman is the transferred item. “Result” is a map of the neighborhood, not an exact translation.
Things customarily affected: food and reading material
Some nouns denote what is characteristically acted upon rather than what the action produces. Makanan is what is eaten, and bacaan is what is read. Traditional descriptions sometimes paraphrase this as “that which is X-ed.” That works for these families but does not cover all -an words.
Makanan bayi itu tidak mengandung gula tambahan.
That baby food contains no added sugar.
Bacaan untuk ujian mencakup tiga bab pertama.
The reading for the exam covers the first three chapters.
Minuman dingin tersedia di lemari sebelah kanan.
Cold drinks are available in the cabinet on the right.
Minuman from minum belongs to the same patient-like pattern: it is something drunk. English happens to use a separate noun drink, which is a reminder that translation shape does not mirror Indonesian morphology.
Instruments and functional objects
Another established cluster names a tool or functional part associated with the base event. Saringan filters, timbangan weighs, gantungan holds something hanging, and pegangan is what one holds.
Tuang santannya melalui saringan halus.
Pour the coconut milk through a fine strainer.
Timbangan di dapur itu perlu dikalibrasi ulang.
The scale in the kitchen needs to be recalibrated.
Jaketmu sudah saya taruh di gantungan dekat pintu.
I put your jacket on the hanger near the door.
Pegangan panci ini panas sekali.
This pot handle is extremely hot.
These readings are lexical. Saringan is a familiar filter, but adding -an to another action root does not automatically create the name of its tool. English -er is equally misleading: “opener” may be an instrument, but Indonesian chooses the established noun pembuka, not a mechanically predicted bare -an form.
Places and spatial regions
Place readings link a base to the location where something happens or to a spatial region characterized by it. Many are old and lexicalized: kubangan “mud hole/puddle,” pangkalan “base/stand,” tepian “edge/bank,” and lapangan “field/open ground.” Parkiran is widespread conversational Indonesian for a parking area (informal); tempat parkir and area parkir are safer in official prose (formal).
Kerbau itu berendam di kubangan setelah hujan.
The buffalo wallows in a mud hole after the rain.
Kami bertemu di pangkalan ojek dekat pasar.
We meet at the motorcycle-taxi stand near the market.
Mereka duduk di tepian sungai sampai matahari terbenam.
They sit on the riverbank until sunset.
Anak-anak bermain bola di lapangan sekolah.
The children play soccer on the school field.
These are not freely interchangeable with “place for X.” For example, the ordinary place to read is tempat membaca or ruang baca, not a newly coined bacaan with a place meaning.
Collections, categories, and approximate groups
With category and number bases, -an can collect individual members into a class or approximate large group. Sayuran denotes vegetables as a food category, while ratusan and ribuan mean “hundreds” and “thousands,” not an exact multiple.
Sayuran hijau sebaiknya dicuci sebelum dipotong.
Green vegetables should be washed before being cut.
Ratusan warga mengikuti pemeriksaan kesehatan gratis.
Hundreds of residents attend the free health screening.
Ribuan tiket habis terjual dalam waktu satu jam.
Thousands of tickets sold out within an hour.
The base still guides interpretation: ratus supplies a numerical scale, while sayur supplies a category. The suffix contributes grouping without erasing those lexical differences.
Informal activity and event readings
Several common -an forms name an event or are used predicatively in relaxed conversation. Jualan can mean goods for sale or the activity of selling; tiduran means lying around; kerjaan means work, task, or job; nongkrongan can mean a hangout or the group/activity associated with hanging out. These are (informal) unless a particular noun has become neutral in a fixed context.
Dia jualan kopi di depan stasiun setiap pagi.
She sells coffee in front of the station every morning. (informal)
Jualannya laris sejak videonya ramai dibagikan.
Her goods have sold well since her video was widely shared. (informal)
Aku cuma tiduran di rumah sepanjang sore.
I just lay around at home all afternoon. (informal)
Kerjaan minggu ini belum selesai juga.
This week's work still isn't finished. (informal)
Warung itu jadi tempat nongkrongan anak kampus.
That food stall has become a hangout for university students. (informal)
This zone shows how noun formation and casual predicate use can overlap. Do not automatically carry these forms into academic or administrative prose: write kegiatan berjualan, berbaring, pekerjaan, or tempat berkumpul when the formal context calls for them.
Polysemy belongs to the whole word
One derivative can develop several related senses. Tulisan may be a text, the visible letters, someone's handwriting, or an inscription. Pegangan may be a physical handle, something held, or figuratively a guiding principle. Kiriman may be a parcel, a submitted contribution, or transferred money in context.
Tulisan dokter itu sulit saya baca.
I find the doctor's handwriting difficult to read.
Prinsip itu menjadi pegangan kami saat mengambil keputusan.
That principle guides us when we make decisions.
Redaksi menerima lebih dari seratus kiriman pembaca.
The editorial office received more than a hundred reader submissions. (formal)
The suffix helps relate the senses, but it does not predict them exhaustively. Learn a derivative through several natural contexts, not one English gloss.
Common Mistakes
Translating every -an noun as an activity
❌ Makanan para peserta dimulai pukul tujuh malam.
Incorrect for the intended activity — makanan means food, not the act of eating.
✅ Acara makan para peserta dimulai pukul tujuh malam.
The participants' meal begins at seven in the evening.
Using a process noun for a concrete product
❌ Penulisan di papan itu sudah pudar.
Incorrect for the visible words — penulisan profiles the process or manner of writing.
✅ Tulisan di papan itu sudah pudar.
The writing on the sign has faded.
Assuming every tool takes bare -an
❌ Tolong ambil bukaan botol dari laci.
Incorrect for ‘bottle opener’ — this instrument is called pembuka botol.
✅ Tolong ambil pembuka botol dari laci.
Please get the bottle opener from the drawer.
Treating a place reading as freely productive
❌ Saya belajar di bacaan kampus sampai malam.
Incorrect — bacaan means reading material, not a place for reading.
✅ Saya belajar di ruang baca kampus sampai malam.
I study in the campus reading room until evening.
Using an informal derivative in official wording
❌ Peraturan ini mengatur kapasitas parkiran gedung pemerintah.
Inappropriate register for careful official prose — parkiran is conversational.
✅ Peraturan ini mengatur kapasitas area parkir gedung pemerintah.
This regulation governs the parking capacity of government buildings. (formal)
