An -an derivative is a noun, so it does not simply carry the base verb's subject and object into a new form. Participants become possessors, dari or untuk phrases, relative clauses, or arguments of a competing process nominalization. At the same time, frequent forms develop conventional senses and register profiles. This page covers those usage choices; formation and the semantic network are handled separately.
From a clause to a noun phrase
Compare an active clause with its related -an noun phrase. The clause explicitly assigns an actor and an object. The noun identifies a product or associated entity, and any participant relationship must be reconstructed inside the noun phrase.
Rina menulis ulasan film itu tadi malam.
Rina wrote a review of that film last night.
Tulisan Rina tentang film itu terbit pagi ini.
Rina's article about that film was published this morning.
Ibu memasak sup ayam untuk makan malam.
Mother cooks chicken soup for dinner.
Masakan ibu selalu habis lebih dulu.
Mother's cooking is always finished first.
Toko itu mengirim dua paket kemarin.
That shop sent two packages yesterday.
Kiriman dari toko itu baru tiba siang ini.
The shipment from that shop only arrived this afternoon.
In tulisan Rina, juxtaposition can express authorship or possession. Tentang film itu specifies topic, not a retained verbal object. Kiriman dari toko makes the source explicit; kiriman untuk Rina would instead identify the destination or intended recipient.
Bare noun juxtaposition can be ambiguous
Indonesian frequently places two nouns together without an overt linker. With a derived noun, that compactness creates several possible relations.
| Compact phrase | Possible reading | Clearer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| tulisan Rina | Rina's text / text written by Rina | tulisan yang ditulis Rina |
| masakan ibu | Mother's dish / cooking | masakan yang dibuat ibu |
| mainan anak | the child's toy / toy for a child | mainan milik anak itu / mainan untuk anak |
| kiriman kantor | office shipment / shipment from the office | kiriman dari kantor |
Mainan anak itu tertinggal di mobil.
That child's toy was left in the car.
Mainan untuk anak usia tiga tahun tidak boleh memiliki bagian kecil.
Toys for three-year-old children must not have small parts.
Tulisan yang dibuat Rina memenangkan lomba.
The piece written by Rina won the competition.
Kiriman untuk kantor cabang sudah kami serahkan kepada kurir.
We have handed the shipment for the branch office to the courier.
Compact phrases are not faulty, and everyday context often makes them clear. Use dari, untuk, milik, or a yang clause when the relationship matters legally, academically, or practically (formal/academic).
Product nouns compete with process and agent nouns
The most important usage choice is often not whether -an is possible, but whether the discourse needs a product, a process, or a participant.
| Base family | Product/thing | Process/activity | Participant |
|---|---|---|---|
| tulis | tulisan “text” | penulisan “writing process/manner” | penulis “writer” |
| kirim | kiriman “shipment” | pengiriman “sending/delivery” | pengirim “sender” |
| main | mainan “toy” | permainan “play/game” | pemain “player” |
| parkir | parkiran “parking area” **(informal)** | perparkiran “parking system/matters” **(formal)** | juru parkir “parking attendant” |
Tulisan itu hanya terdiri atas tiga paragraf.
The text consists of only three paragraphs.
Penulisan laporan tahunan memerlukan data tambahan.
Writing the annual report requires additional data. (formal)
Penulis laporan diminta hadir dalam rapat.
The report's author is asked to attend the meeting. (formal)
Kiriman obat sudah tiba, tetapi pengirimannya terlambat dua hari.
The medicine shipment has arrived, but its delivery was two days late.
Anak-anak menyimpan mainan setelah permainan selesai.
The children put away the toys after the game ends.
Pemerintah kota sedang menata sistem perparkiran di pusat kota.
The city government is reorganizing the parking system downtown. (formal)
English often uses the same form for product and process—writing can mean either. Indonesian commonly makes the distinction visible. Tulisan laporan is not a general replacement for penulisan laporan when the intended meaning is “the process of writing a report.”
Valency does not survive unchanged
An event nominalization such as penulisan can retain event participants in a relatively transparent way: penulisan laporan oleh Rina. A concrete -an noun usually does not. It denotes a thing that can then be counted, modified, possessed, or located like other nouns.
Dua tulisan terbaru Rina dimuat dalam majalah itu.
Rina's two latest articles appeared in that magazine.
Penulisan dua artikel itu dibiayai oleh lembaga penelitian.
The writing of those two articles was funded by the research institute. (formal)
Tiga kiriman besar menumpuk di ruang penerimaan.
Three large shipments are piling up in the receiving room.
Pengiriman tiga paket itu ditangani oleh perusahaan berbeda.
The delivery of those three packages is handled by different companies. (formal)
The concrete nouns accept numerals and ordinary modifiers because they identify entities. The process forms more naturally take duration, manner, agents with oleh, and event-level evaluation.
Lexicalized forms must be stored whole
Some -an words have meanings that no simple rule will fully predict. Atasan can mean a superior or an upper garment; bawahan can mean a subordinate, a lower part, or a lower garment; pasangan can mean a pair, partner, or matched counterpart. Jalanan can refer to streets as an environment, not merely “the result of walking.”
Atasan saya sedang mengikuti konferensi di Makassar.
My supervisor is attending a conference in Makassar.
Ia memilih atasan putih dan bawahan hitam untuk acara itu.
She chose a white top and black bottoms for the event.
Pasangan itu pindah ke rumah baru bulan lalu.
The couple moved to a new house last month.
Musisi jalanan mulai tampil setelah hujan reda.
The street musicians begin performing after the rain stops.
A dictionary entry establishes a word and records its senses; it does not make those senses fully compositional. Knowing atas “above” does not by itself predict “supervisor” or “shirt/top.” Learn collocations and example sentences for each established sense.
Productivity has lexical limits
Speakers can understand many familiar base + -an patterns, yet not every logically possible derivative is acceptable. English may encourage a learner to invent a noun meaning “table-related object” from meja, but mejaan has no such standard role. Similarly, a “place for reading” is ruang baca, not bacaan; bacaan already means reading material.
Saya membeli meja kerja baru untuk kamar kecil itu.
I bought a new desk for that small room.
Perpustakaan menyediakan ruang baca yang tenang.
The library provides a quiet reading room.
Bacaan yang tersedia cocok untuk pembaca pemula.
The available reading material is suitable for beginning readers.
The honest learning strategy is two-layered: use -an as a productive schema to recognize relationships, then confirm each derivative as part of a lexical family.
Formal and conversational choices
Neutral nouns such as tulisan, makanan, and mainan occur across registers. Parkiran, kerjaan, jualan, and some predicate-like -an forms strongly favor conversation (informal). Formal writing normally selects area/tempat parkir, pekerjaan, and kegiatan berjualan.
Laporan evaluasi membahas keterbacaan tulisan pada kemasan makanan dan mainan serta kapasitas area parkir.
The evaluation report discusses the legibility of writing on food and toy packaging and the capacity of the parking area. (formal)
Tulisannya susah dibaca, makanannya mahal, mainannya gampang rusak, dan parkirannya sempit.
The writing is hard to read, the food is expensive, the toys break easily, and the parking area is narrow. (informal)
The second sentence uses noun-plus--nya naturally to keep all four topics active in conversation. Its forms are not “incorrect Indonesian”; they are choices with different social and textual homes.
Common Mistakes
Using a product noun for a process
❌ Tulisan laporan itu memerlukan waktu tiga minggu.
Incorrect for the intended process — tulisan is a written product.
✅ Penulisan laporan itu memerlukan waktu tiga minggu.
Writing that report takes three weeks. (formal)
Using mainan for an activity
❌ Mainan sepak bola itu berlangsung sampai malam.
Incorrect — mainan is a toy, not the activity or game.
✅ Permainan sepak bola itu berlangsung sampai malam.
The soccer game continued until evening.
Leaving a participant relation unclear in a formal text
❌ Kiriman kantor cabang hilang dalam perjalanan.
Ambiguous — this can suggest several relations in a context requiring precision.
✅ Kiriman dari kantor cabang hilang dalam perjalanan.
The shipment from the branch office was lost in transit. (formal)
Coining a derivative that Indonesian does not use
❌ Saya membeli mejaan baru untuk bekerja.
Nonstandard coinage — mejaan is not the ordinary noun for a desk.
✅ Saya membeli meja kerja baru untuk bekerja.
I bought a new desk for work.
Carrying casual parkiran into official prose
❌ Dokumen ini menetapkan tarif parkiran gedung pemerintah.
Inappropriate register for careful official prose — use area parkir or tempat parkir.
✅ Dokumen ini menetapkan tarif area parkir gedung pemerintah.
This document sets the parking-area rates for government buildings. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- A concrete -an noun creates a noun phrase; it does not retain verbal arguments unchanged.
- Use explicit linkers or relative clauses when authorship, source, destination, or purpose must be clear.
- Contrast product tulisan/kiriman, process penulisan/pengiriman, and participant penulis/pengirim.
- Learn lexicalized senses such as atasan, bawahan, and pasangan as whole families.
- The system is a productive schema plus lexical conventions, with register stored as part of each word.
