ke-...-an: Formation and Allomorphy

The circumfix ke-...-an places a base inside two bound pieces and creates words such as kebaikan “goodness,” kesehatan “health,” kedinginan “feel/be excessively cold,” and kehilangan “lose/loss.” Both sides belong to one formation, and the finished word is written solidly. This page explains that formation and its sound-spelling boundaries; the meaning network and usage patterns are treated separately.

One circumfix around one base

The canonical template is:

ke- + base + -an → ke-base-an

The two pieces work as a frame around the base. In bracket notation, kebaikan is [ke-[baik]-an]. It is not ke + baikan, and it is not kebaik + an. Some linguistic analyses model the historical or derivational stages differently, but for a learner the simultaneous frame correctly predicts standard spelling and base recovery.

BaseAnalysisSurface formCommon word class/sense
baikke- + baik + -ankebaikannoun: goodness, kindness, benefit
sehatke- + sehat + -ankesehatannoun: health
dinginke- + dingin + -ankedinginanstative verb/predicate: feel too cold
hilangke- + hilang + -ankehilanganverb/noun: lose, loss
bersihke- + bersih + -ankebersihannoun: cleanliness
laparke- + lapar + -ankelaparanstative verb/noun: be starving, starvation

Kebaikan kecil itu masih saya ingat sampai sekarang.

I still remember that small kindness.

Puskesmas mengadakan pemeriksaan kesehatan gratis.

The community health center is holding free health checks.

Anak itu kedinginan karena bajunya basah.

The child is freezing because their clothes are wet.

Saya kehilangan dompet di dalam bus.

I lost my wallet on the bus.

Kebersihan dapur harus diperiksa setiap hari.

The cleanliness of the kitchen must be checked every day. (formal)

Banyak warga terancam kelaparan setelah panen gagal.

Many residents face starvation after the harvest failed. (formal)

These six meanings already show why the circumfix cannot be translated by one English suffix. English uses -ness in goodness, a separate noun in health, an adjective in cold, and a verb in lose. Formation is shared; word class and sense are properties of each lexical family.

💡
Use ke-...-an as the name of the morphological frame, never as a string to paste literally into a sentence. The actual words are kebaikan, kesehatan, kedinginan, and kehilangan.

The default shape is invariant

In the core productive pattern, ke- and -an do not have sound-conditioned allomorphs. They do not turn into ker-, kem-, or another nasal form. They also do not delete a base consonant.

Keberhasilan proyek itu bergantung pada kerja sama warga.

The success of the project depends on community cooperation.

Kecantikan bukan satu-satunya hal yang dinilai dalam audisi itu.

Beauty is not the only thing assessed in that audition.

Ketinggian air terus meningkat sejak dini hari.

The water level has continued to rise since early morning.

The bases hasil, cantik, and tinggi remain recoverable inside keberhasilan, kecantikan, and ketinggian. Some longer forms contain an already complex base: berhasil → keberhasilan includes the base berhasil, so the sequence ber belongs inside the circumfix rather than being an allomorph of ke-.

There is no nasal substitution like meN- + tulis → menulis. In kehilangan, both initial h and final ng of hilang remain. In kebaikan, k of baik remains. “No deletion” is itself the reliable rule for this circumfix.

Kehilangan data dapat dicegah dengan membuat cadangan.

Data loss can be prevented by making backups. (formal)

Kebaikan hatinya dikenal oleh seluruh tetangga.

Her kindness is known by all the neighbors.

Vowels remain visible at both boundaries

When ke- meets a vowel-initial base, both vowels are written: adil → keadilan, aman → keamanan, enak → keenakan. When a vowel-final base meets -an, the base-final vowel also remains: bahagia → kebahagiaan, berani → keberanian, tahu → ketahuan.

final i + suffixke- + berani + -ankeberaniankeberanin
final u + suffixke- + tahu + -anketahuanketahan

Warga menuntut keadilan bagi semua korban.

Residents demand justice for all victims.

Petugas memeriksa keamanan pintu sebelum gedung ditutup.

The officer checks the security of the doors before the building closes.

Dia keenakan duduk di sofa sampai lupa waktu.

He got so comfortable sitting on the sofa that he lost track of time. (informal)

Kebahagiaan mereka terlihat dari foto-foto itu.

Their happiness is visible in those photos.

Keberanian saksi itu membantu penyelidikan.

The witness's courage helped the investigation.

Kami ketahuan masuk melalui pintu belakang.

We got caught entering through the back door. (informal)

The adjacent vowels may belong to separate syllables or be realized smoothly in speech, but normal spelling adds no apostrophe, accent, or boundary hyphen. See vowel sequences and hiatus for the general orthographic principle.

💡
Count the letters supplied by the base before attaching the frame. Bahagia ends in a, and -an begins in a, so standard kebahagiaan contains both.

Base categories and formation families

Property and state bases

Property bases form the largest transparent group. They often yield an abstract noun: baik → kebaikan, sehat → kesehatan, bersih → kebersihan, indah → keindahan, mampu → kemampuan. Some state bases instead yield an experiential predicate, especially an excessive or adverse state: dingin → kedinginan, lapar → kelaparan, panas → kepanasan.

Keindahan pantai itu menarik banyak pengunjung.

The beauty of that beach attracts many visitors.

Kemampuan membaca peta sangat berguna dalam perjalanan.

The ability to read a map is very useful while traveling.

Kami kepanasan karena kipasnya rusak.

We are unbearably hot because the fan is broken.

The same structural frame can therefore produce a noun or a predicate. Do not assign word class from the circumfix alone.

Event and nominal bases

Some event bases form arrival, loss, or adverse-event families: datang → kedatangan, hilang → kehilangan, jatuh → kejatuhan. Noun bases also occur in established formations such as raja → kerajaan and pulau → kepulauan.

Kedatangan kereta berikutnya diperkirakan pukul sembilan.

The next train is expected to arrive at nine. (formal)

Ia kejatuhan ranting saat berjalan di taman.

A branch fell on her while she was walking in the park.

Kerajaan itu menguasai jalur perdagangan laut.

The kingdom controlled the maritime trade route.

Mereka berlayar di Kepulauan Maluku selama dua minggu.

They sailed in the Maluku Islands for two weeks.

These extensions are lexically licensed. Not every verb or noun can be placed inside ke-...-an, and similar-looking derivatives can differ in word class and valency. Those differences belong to the neighboring meaning and usage pages.

How dictionaries expose the base

A useful recognition procedure is to hypothesize a frame, remove initial ke and final an, and check whether the middle is a plausible base. This works cleanly for kebaikan → baik, kesehatan → sehat, kedinginan → dingin, and kehilangan → hilang.

Kamus menempatkan kesehatan dalam keluarga kata sehat.

The dictionary places kesehatan in the sehat word family. (academic)

Lema hilang mencantumkan bentuk kehilangan dengan beberapa makna.

The entry hilang lists kehilangan with several meanings. (academic)

Do not strip letters mechanically from every word beginning in ke and ending in an. A reliable dictionary confirms whether the middle is the synchronically useful base and whether the whole formation is established. It also reveals lexicalized senses that a structural analysis cannot predict.

💡
Base recovery is a hypothesis followed by verification: recognize the ke-...-an frame, identify a plausible middle, then check the whole lexical family.

Do not confuse the circumfix with the preposition ke

The independent preposition ke marks a destination and is written separately: ke kantor, ke pasar, ke rumah. Circumfixal ke- is bound and requires the closing -an as part of the same word.

Kami pergi ke klinik untuk pemeriksaan kesehatan.

We go to the clinic for a health examination.

Anak-anak berlari ke dalam rumah karena kedinginan.

The children run inside because they are cold.

In the first sentence, ke klinik has a space because ke is a preposition; kesehatan is one derived word. In the second, ke dalam is a prepositional phrase, while kedinginan is circumfixed.

Common Mistakes

Separating the two parts in ordinary spelling

❌ Ke baik an hati mereka membuat saya terharu.

Incorrect — ordinary circumfixed words are written solidly.

✅ Kebaikan hati mereka membuat saya terharu.

Their kindness moved me.

Printing analytic hyphens

❌ Anak itu ke-dingin-an setelah kehujanan.

Incorrect — hyphens belong only in morphological notation.

✅ Anak itu kedinginan setelah kehujanan.

The child became cold after being caught in the rain.

Dropping a base-final vowel

❌ Kebahagian tidak selalu bergantung pada uang.

Incorrect — bahagia + -an preserves both adjacent a letters.

✅ Kebahagiaan tidak selalu bergantung pada uang.

Happiness does not always depend on money.

Deleting a consonant as if ke- were nasal

❌ Saya keilangan kunci rumah tadi pagi.

Incorrect — ke-...-an does not delete the initial h of hilang.

✅ Saya kehilangan kunci rumah tadi pagi.

I lost my house key this morning.

Forcing every form to be an abstract noun

❌ Kedinginan saya disebabkan oleh jaket yang tipis.

Awkward for an ordinary personal state — kedinginan normally functions directly as the predicate here.

✅ Saya kedinginan karena jaket saya terlalu tipis.

I am cold because my jacket is too thin.

Key Takeaways

  • Analyze the whole frame as [ke-[base]-an] and write the actual word solidly.
  • The default circumfix is invariant and does not trigger nasal substitution or consonant deletion.
  • Preserve vowels at both boundaries: keadilan, keenakan, kebahagiaan, keberanian.
  • Property, state, event, and some noun bases occur, but each derivative is lexically licensed.
  • One shared formation can yield abstract nouns, experiential predicates, event nouns, and other lexicalized words; no single English suffix covers it.
