ke-...-an: Valency, Lexicalization, and Register

The category of a ke-...-an word determines its argument structure. Abstract kebaikan and kesehatan head noun phrases; excessive-state kedinginan predicates an experience of its subject; adversative kehilangan can place the affected person before a following lost-item complement. A single β€œEnglish -ness” rule cannot predict these structures.

This page covers valency, neighboring derivations, lexical exceptions, and register. Formation belongs on the adjacent formation page; the meaning page maps the abstract and affected-experience branches.

Abstract nouns behave as noun-phrase heads

An abstract ke-...-an noun can serve as subject, object, or complement and can take a following possessor or domain phrase.

Kebaikan warga setempat membuat kami merasa diterima.

The kindness of local residents made us feel welcome.

Kami menghargai kebaikan warga setempat.

We appreciate the kindness of local residents.

Kesehatan anak bergantung pada gizi dan lingkungan yang baik.

A child's health depends on nutrition and a good environment.

Pemerintah meningkatkan anggaran untuk kesehatan masyarakat.

The government increased the budget for public health. (formal)

The noun after kebaikan or kesehatan is not a verbal object. It identifies the quality bearer or domain: the residents are kind; the child is healthy. The whole phrase then receives its clause role from membuat, menghargai, bergantung, or a preposition.

πŸ’‘
With an abstract noun, paraphrase the following noun as β€œthe quality/state of X.” With an adversative predicate, ask instead who suffers and what event participant follows.

From a property clause to an abstract noun phrase

Nominalization reorganizes rather than simply lengthens a clause.

Petunjuk itu jelas dan mudah diikuti.

Those instructions are clear and easy to follow.

Kejelasan petunjuk itu membantu pengguna baru.

The clarity of those instructions helps new users.

Para pekerja harus tetap sehat selama musim hujan.

The workers must remain healthy during the rainy season.

Perusahaan bertanggung jawab atas kesehatan para pekerja.

The company is responsible for the workers' health.

The adjective predicates a property directly. The derived noun lets the property become an argument of another predicate. This nominal packaging is common in formal and academic prose; conversation often keeps the property clause.

Excessive-state predicates take an affected subject

In Saya kedinginan, the subject experiences too much cold. In Sepatu ini kebesaran, the subject has an unsuitable degree of size. These forms do not introduce an actor or ordinary object.

Kami kedinginan setelah menunggu bus hampir satu jam.

We were freezing after waiting for the bus for almost an hour.

Jaket ini kekecilan untuk dipakai di atas sweter.

This jacket is too small to wear over a sweater.

Supnya keasinan, jadi saya menambahkan sedikit air.

The soup is too salty, so I added a little water.

Penjelasan itu kepanjangan untuk pengumuman singkat.

That explanation is too long for a short announcement.

The analytic competitor terlalu + adjective is transparent and works widely:

Jaket ini terlalu kecil untuk dipakai di atas sweter.

This jacket is too small to wear over a sweater.

The ke-...-an form is especially natural in everyday evaluation; terlalu kecil is neutral across speech and writing. Not every adjective has an equally conventional excessive derivative.

Adversative clauses organize around the sufferer

In a central adversative pattern, the subject is the involuntary undergoer, not the actor. A following noun can name what falls, enters, is stolen, or is lost.

Buruh itu kejatuhan pasir saat memindahkan karung.

The worker had sand fall on him while moving sacks.

Rumah kami kemasukan air dari saluran belakang.

Our house got water in it from the rear drain.

Orang itu kecurian sepeda ketika sedang berbelanja.

That person had a bicycle stolen while shopping.

Kami kedatangan tamu saat rumah sedang berantakan.

We had guests arrive while the house was a mess.

In Buruh itu kejatuhan pasir, buruh itu is the sufferer while pasir is what falls. In Orang itu kecurian sepeda, the person is adversely affected and sepeda is the stolen item. Calling the following noun an ordinary affected object reverses the semantic roles.

These predicates do not form an ordinary active/passive pair. To report the event from the stolen item’s perspective, use a di- passive:

Sepeda orang itu dicuri ketika ia sedang berbelanja.

That person's bicycle was stolen while he/she was shopping.

The passive reports what happened to the bicycle. Orang itu kecurian sepeda foregrounds the owner’s misfortune.

Kehilangan as a lexicalized two-participant predicate

Kehilangan commonly places the affected experiencer in subject position and the lost entity after the predicate.

Ia kehilangan ransel di dalam kereta.

He/She lost a backpack on the train.

Perusahaan itu kehilangan beberapa pelanggan tetap.

That company lost several regular customers.

The following noun is tightly licensed, but kehilangan does not participate in the ordinary meN-/di- voice alternation. Dompet dikehilangkan saya is not the passive of Saya kehilangan dompet. Choose a lexical alternative according to perspective:

Dompet saya hilang di dalam bus.

My wallet went missing on the bus.

Saya tidak sengaja menghilangkan tanda terima itu.

I accidentally lost/misplaced that receipt.

Hilang centers the missing item; menghilangkan introduces a causer; kehilangan centers the person or organization suffering the loss. These are related but not interchangeable valency frames.

Competition with ter- and ordinary passive voice

Ter- often highlights an uncontrolled event or result, while adversative ke-...-an highlights the affected party.

Saya tertidur di sofa sambil menunggu kabar.

I fell asleep on the sofa while waiting for news.

Saya ketiduran di sofa dan terlambat mengikuti rapat.

I accidentally fell asleep on the sofa and was late for the meeting.

Dompet saya tertinggal di kamar hotel.

My wallet was accidentally left in the hotel room.

Saya ketinggalan kunci kamar di meja resepsionis.

I accidentally left my room key at the reception desk.

The pairs can describe similar situations. Tertidur/tertinggal foreground the uncontrolled transition or result; ketiduran/ketinggalan more readily foreground the experiencer’s inconvenience. Lexical convention matters, and the distinction is a tendency rather than a universal mechanical opposition.

Four root families across register

Baik β†’ kebaikan

Kebijakan tersebut disusun demi kebaikan bersama.

The policy was drafted for the common good. (formal)

Aturannya dibuat supaya semuanya enak.

The rule was made so things work well for everyone. (informal)

Sehat β†’ kesehatan

Pemeriksaan kesehatan wajib dilakukan sebelum keberangkatan.

A health examination must be completed before departure. (formal)

Sebelum berangkat, kita harus cek kesehatan dulu.

Before leaving, we need to get our health checked first. (informal)

Dingin β†’ kedinginan

Para pendaki mengalami kedinginan akibat cuaca ekstrem.

The hikers suffered from the cold because of extreme weather. (formal)

Mereka kedinginan karena tidak bawa jaket.

They were freezing because they didn't bring jackets. (informal)

Hilang β†’ kehilangan

Perusahaan melaporkan kehilangan data akibat gangguan sistem.

The company reported data loss because of a system failure. (formal)

Datanya hilang gara-gara sistemnya bermasalah.

The data disappeared because the system had a problem. (informal)

The formal versions often package states as nouns; the conversational versions prefer a direct predicate or everyday causal phrase. This is information packaging, not a rule that casual Indonesian deletes the circumfix.

Lexicalized words and blocked coinages

Dictionary-listed nouns such as kesempatan, kebutuhan, kenyataan, kegiatan, and keputusan have their own complements and collocations.

Kami mendapat kesempatan untuk memperbaiki kesalahan itu.

We got an opportunity to correct that mistake.

Keputusan akhir berada di tangan direktur.

The final decision rests with the director.

Kesempatan untuk... licenses an infinitive-like untuk complement; keputusan tentang... can introduce a topic. Those patterns cannot be predicted by translating the apparent base alone.

The schema remains productive, but a logically possible quality or adverse event does not guarantee a conventional derivative. Verify unfamiliar forms and prefer transparent terlalu + adjective, a finite clause, or an established noun when the coined form is not attested.

Productivity proposes a form; the lexicon decides whether speakers accept it and which arguments it licenses. Learn frequent ke-...-an words together with one natural phrase.

Orthography

Use hyphens only in the abstract label ke-...-an or an analysis such as ke- + dingin + -an. Actual lowercase forms are solid: kebaikan, kesehatan, kedinginan, kehilangan. No deleted root consonant is restored in these families.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating an abstract noun as an adjective predicate

❌ Pekerja itu kesehatan setelah beristirahat.

Incorrect β€” kesehatan is a noun, not the ordinary predicate β€˜healthy.’

βœ… Pekerja itu sehat kembali setelah beristirahat.

The worker is healthy again after resting.

2. Treating an adversative complement as an ordinary object

❌ Pasir kejatuhan buruh itu saat karung dipindahkan.

Incorrect role order β€” the worker is the sufferer and must be the subject.

βœ… Buruh itu kejatuhan pasir saat karung dipindahkan.

The worker had sand fall on him while the sacks were being moved.

3. Building a passive from kehilangan

❌ Dompet itu dikehilangkan saya di dalam bus.

Incorrect β€” kehilangan has no ordinary di- passive counterpart.

βœ… Dompet itu hilang ketika saya naik bus.

The wallet went missing while I was riding the bus.

4. Using kedinginan for a neutral cold object

❌ Air minum itu kedinginan karena disimpan di kulkas.

Wrong for a neutral temperature description β€” kedinginan profiles excessive or experienced cold.

βœ… Air minum itu dingin karena disimpan di kulkas.

The drinking water is cold because it was kept in the refrigerator.

5. Coining an excessive form mechanically

❌ Penjelasan ini kepenuhcontohan untuk pembaca baru.

Incorrect invented derivative from a multiword idea.

βœ… Penjelasan ini memiliki terlalu banyak contoh untuk pembaca baru.

This explanation has too many examples for new readers.
