ter-: Valency, Lexicalization, and Register

Using ter- well requires more than knowing its meanings. Each reading organizes participants differently: a stative places the result-bearing theme in subject position, an intransitive accidental centers the undergoer, a transitive accidental or abilitative behaves like a restricted passive, and a superlative behaves as an adjective inside a clause or noun phrase.

The productive schema is real, but lexical families decide which roots, suffixes, complements, and registers are established. This page covers those usage choices. Formation and allomorphy, then the semantic network itself, remain on the other two ter- pages.

Result states do not project an actor

In stative ter- clauses, the subject bears a condition. The clause does not assert the action that created it, so an actor is normally unavailable.

Pintu utama terbuka sejak pukul tujuh.

The main door has been open since seven.

Nama pemenang tertulis di bagian atas sertifikat.

The winner’s name is written at the top of the certificate.

Kantor cabang itu terletak di seberang stasiun.

That branch office is located opposite the station.

The subjects pintu utama, nama pemenang, and kantor cabang are themes whose states or locations matter. To mention a deliberate actor, switch to an eventive active or passive clause.

Petugas membuka pintu utama pukul tujuh.

The officer opens the main door at seven.

Pintu utama dibuka oleh petugas pukul tujuh.

The main door is opened by the officer at seven.

Rina menulis nama pemenang di bagian atas sertifikat.

Rina writes the winner’s name at the top of the certificate.

This active–passive–stative contrast is more informative than calling both dibuka and terbuka “passive.” Dibuka profiles an opening event; terbuka predicates the open result.

💡
If an actor is central, choose an active or di- event clause. If the resulting condition is central and no action is asserted, stative ter- is natural.

Intransitive accidental clauses: the undergoer is subject

With terjatuh, tertidur, tersandung, and similar verbs, the subject undergoes a low-control or unexpected event. There is no direct object.

Saya terjatuh di tangga, tetapi tidak terluka.

I fell on the stairs but was not injured.

Anak itu tertidur di mobil dalam perjalanan pulang.

That child fell asleep in the car on the way home.

Dua pelari tersandung di tikungan terakhir.

Two runners stumbled at the final bend.

The plain root can overlap, especially in conversation: Saya jatuh di tangga is a neutral report that context can understand as accidental. Terjatuh explicitly frames the event as undergone, uncontrolled, or unexpectedly reaching its endpoint.

Tadi aku jatuh dekat pintu, tapi tidak apa-apa.

I fell near the door earlier, but I’m fine. (informal)

Do not add an affected object after terjatuh. If someone causes an object to fall, use menjatuhkan, with tidak sengaja when the causing itself was accidental.

Saya tidak sengaja menjatuhkan ponsel saat turun dari bus.

I accidentally dropped my phone while getting off the bus.

Here saya is the causer and ponsel the affected object. In Ponsel saya terjatuh, the phone itself is the subject that undergoes the fall.

Transitive accidentals: passive-like structure

Some accidental ter- verbs have an affected theme as subject and allow a secondary actor. This structure is passive-like. If a first- or second-person pronoun is expressed as the actor, use oleh.

Buku Anda terbawa oleh saya karena sampulnya sama.

I took your book by mistake because the covers are identical.

Maaf, payungmu terpakai oleh saya tadi pagi.

Sorry, I used your umbrella by mistake this morning.

Obat itu terminum anak kecil karena botolnya tidak berlabel.

The medicine was accidentally drunk by a small child because the bottle had no label.

With a full noun such as anak kecil, oleh can be omitted. With pronoun saya, omission is not the careful standard pattern. In everyday conversation, speakers often avoid the marked passive structure and state the accidental actor directly.

Maaf, saya tidak sengaja membawa buku Anda.

Sorry, I took your book by mistake.

Aku tadi tidak sengaja pakai payungmu.

I accidentally used your umbrella earlier. (informal)

These paraphrases are usually clearer when an apology and the speaker’s responsibility are discourse-central.

Abilitative clauses: theme first, agent optional

Abilitative ter- also has passive organization. The theme is subject; a potential actor can follow with oleh, but is often omitted because the relevant issue is whether the endpoint is attainable.

Tulisan pada foto itu tidak terbaca.

The writing in that photo cannot be read.

Menara itu tidak terlihat dari halaman belakang.

That tower cannot be seen from the backyard.

Suara pembicara terdengar jelas sampai baris terakhir.

The speaker’s voice can be heard clearly all the way to the last row.

Tulisan pada formulir itu tidak terbaca oleh petugas kami karena tintanya pudar.

The writing on that form cannot be read by our staff because the ink has faded.

The active alternatives put the perceiver or problem-solver first:

Saya tidak bisa membaca tulisan pada foto itu.

I cannot read the writing in that photo.

Petugas kami tidak dapat membaca tulisan pada formulir itu karena tintanya pudar.

Our staff cannot read the writing on that form because the ink has faded.

The bisa/dapat + active verb alternative is frequent and transparent. Dapat + di- is another common formal option: Soal itu belum dapat diselesaikan. Do not assume that a ter- abilitative is automatically more correct; lexical convention and register determine which sounds natural.

Suffix retention reveals the reading

When a related transitive verb contains -kan or -i, accidental and abilitative readings can differ in whether that suffix remains. The tendency is strong but has lexical and speaker-specific exceptions.

Hal itu tiba-tiba terpikir oleh saya saat mandi.

That suddenly occurred to me while I was showering.

Akibat jangka panjangnya belum terpikirkan oleh banyak orang.

Its long-term consequences are still unimaginable/not yet able to be thought through by many people.

In terpikir, the unbidden thought reading normally lacks -kan. In abilitative or evaluative terpikirkan, the suffix remains and the focus is whether something can be conceived.

Daerah terpencil itu belum terjangkau layanan kesehatan.

That remote area is not yet reachable by health services.

Dampak perubahan ini tidak terhindarkan.

The impact of this change is unavoidable.

Accidental forms often drop a suffix found in a neighboring causative or applicative verb, while ability forms more readily retain it. Journalistic usage shows variation, and dictionaries do not agree on every marginal form. There is no safe strategy of mechanically removing or retaining every suffix; verify the established word and intended reading.

💡
When a suffix alternates, compare meanings before spellings: an unbidden event often favors the shorter form, whereas an abilitative or evaluative reading may retain -kan or -i.

Competition with di-, bisa/dapat, and paling

The most useful choice is constructional:

Intended profileTypical constructionExample
deliberate passive eventdi-Pintu dibuka petugas.
resulting statestative ter-Pintu terbuka.
uncontrolled eventaccidental ter- or contextual rootSaya terjatuh/jatuh.
abilityabilitative ter- or bisa/dapatTulisan tidak terbaca.
superlativeter- or productive palinggedung tertinggi/paling tinggi

Dokumen itu dibuka oleh petugas yang berwenang.

The document was opened by an authorized officer.

Dokumen itu terbuka di layar ketika saya kembali.

The document was open on the screen when I returned.

Tulisan tangan ini paling sulit dibaca.

This handwriting is the hardest to read.

The semantic network guide develops the event/state contrast and the endpoint logic behind it.

Superlatives inside noun phrases and clauses

Superlative ter- behaves adjectivally. It can modify a noun directly or serve as the predicate, and its comparison domain is normally recoverable.

Tim peneliti mengunjungi desa tertinggi di wilayah itu.

The research team visited the highest village in that region.

Dari semua jalur yang tersedia, jalur utara terpendek.

Of all the available routes, the northern route is the shortest.

Keamanan data adalah pertimbangan terpenting dalam proyek ini.

Data security is the most important consideration in this project.

Compact ter- superlatives are common in formal, journalistic, and institutional prose (formal). Conversation often uses paling without changing the truth conditions.

Menurutku, gedung itu yang paling tinggi di sini.

I think that building is the tallest one here. (informal)

Formal instruction and conversational paraphrase

The four required families show how register and perspective interact.

Permohonan dengan lampiran yang tidak terbaca tidak dapat diproses.

Applications with illegible attachments cannot be processed. (formal)

Lampirannya enggak kelihatan; kirim foto baru, ya.

The attachment isn’t visible; send a new photo, okay? (informal)

Akses darurat harus tetap terbuka selama kegiatan berlangsung.

The emergency access must remain open throughout the event. (formal)

Pintunya jangan ditutup dulu, ya.

Don’t close the door yet, okay? (informal)

Seorang pengunjung terjatuh di dekat pintu masuk.

A visitor fell near the entrance. (formal report)

Tadi ada orang jatuh dekat pintu masuk.

Someone fell near the entrance earlier. (informal)

Menara tertinggi akan diperiksa lebih dahulu.

The tallest tower will be inspected first. (formal)

Kita cek menara yang paling tinggi dulu.

Let’s check the tallest tower first. (informal)

The conversational alternatives are not defective Indonesian. They redistribute meaning across roots, tidak sengaja, bisa, kelihatan, or paling, often making the intended participant structure more explicit.

Lexicalized forms and false segmentation

Words such as tertarik “interested/attracted,” terlambat “late,” termasuk “including/belong to,” terutama “especially,” and terhadap “toward/regarding” have established syntax that cannot be predicted by simply removing ter-.

Saya tertarik pada sejarah kota-kota pelabuhan.

I am interested in the history of port cities.

Semua peserta, termasuk pendamping, harus mendaftar.

All participants, including companions, must register.

Kebijakan itu berlaku terhadap semua cabang perusahaan.

That policy applies to all company branches. (formal)

Terhadap is a preposition, not an accidental verb meaning “face unintentionally.” A dictionary may reveal historical morphology, but modern category and collocation remain facts to learn.

New ter- formations do appear in journalistic, technical, and advertising language. Some become accepted; others remain playful or opaque. Do not coin a form merely because its intended English translation has un-...-able or most.

Orthography

Write actual words solid: terbuka, terjatuh, terlihat, tertinggi. Use ter- with a hyphen only in abstract analysis. Preserve accepted allomorphy such as terasa and terekam rather than restoring a deleted prefix consonant. Aspect and modal words remain separate: sudah terbuka, tidak terlihat, belum terselesaikan.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding an actor to a result state

❌ Jendela tertutup oleh satpam pukul sembilan tadi malam.

Incorrect for a deliberate closing event — tertutup presents the closed state.

✅ Jendela ditutup oleh satpam pukul sembilan tadi malam.

The window was closed by the security guard at nine last night.

2. Using an active perceiver as subject of terlihat

❌ Saya tidak terlihat nomor pada papan itu.

Incorrect for ‘I cannot see the number’ — terlihat centers the visible theme.

✅ Saya tidak bisa melihat nomor pada papan itu.

I cannot see the number on that board.

3. Omitting oleh before a pronoun actor

❌ Buku Anda terbawa saya karena sampulnya sama.

Incorrect careful standard structure — a pronoun actor after passive-like terbawa requires oleh.

✅ Buku itu terbawa oleh saya karena sampulnya mirip dengan milik saya.

I took that book by mistake because its cover looked like mine.

4. Losing the ability suffix

❌ Akibat sebesar itu tidak terpikir oleh kami.

Incorrect for the intended ‘could not be conceived’ — without -kan, terpikir favors ‘occurred to mind.’

✅ Akibat sebesar itu tidak terpikirkan oleh kami.

Consequences that large could not be conceived by us.

5. Treating lexical terhadap as a compositional verb

❌ Saya terhadap pintu ketika petugas masuk.

Incorrect — terhadap is a preposition, not the verb ‘face.’

✅ Saya menghadap pintu ketika petugas masuk.

I was facing the door when the officer entered.

Key Takeaways

  • Stative ter- has a result-bearing theme but no asserted actor; choose di- or an active clause for a deliberate event.
  • Accidental and abilitative transitive clauses are passive-like; pronoun actors require oleh in careful Standard Indonesian.
  • Suffix retention can distinguish an unbidden event (terpikir) from ability (terpikirkan), but lexical variation must be verified.
  • Bisa/dapat, di-, contextual roots, and paling are natural competitors whose distribution depends on meaning and register.
  • Treat lexicalized words as complete constructions, not automatically compositional prefix-plus-root sums.
