ter-: Formation and Allomorphy

The canonical formation is ter- + base, written as one solid word: terbuka, terjatuh, terlihat, tertinggi. The same surface prefix attaches across verbal and adjectival categories, although the resulting meanings differ. In defined sound environments, the final r of the prefix is absent, producing forms such as terasa from rasa and terekam from rekam.

This page covers only formation, allomorphy, root categories, and dictionary recovery. The stative, accidental, abilitative, and superlative readings belong on the meaning page; valency, lexicalization, and register choice belong on the usage page.

The canonical template

With most bases, ter- attaches without changing its shape. The abstract hyphen appears only in linguistic analysis; the finished Indonesian word is solid.

ukurter- + ukurterukurmeasurable/controlled result

The last two are additional natural formations, not invented classroom forms.

Pintu belakang masih terbuka.

The back door is still open.

Saya terjatuh ketika turun dari bus.

I fell while getting off the bus.

Dari bukit ini, seluruh kota terlihat jelas.

From this hill, the whole city is clearly visible.

Menara itu merupakan struktur tertinggi di kompleks ini.

That tower is the tallest structure in this complex.

Peserta terpilih akan dihubungi melalui surel.

The selected participants will be contacted by email.

Program itu memiliki sasaran yang jelas dan terukur.

That program has clear and measurable targets.

These examples show one formal prefix across roots that become predicates, participial modifiers, or superlative adjectives. Formation alone does not determine which reading the sentence receives.

Recognize the word class and base before assigning meaning. The spelling ter- is stable across several categories; syntax and lexical convention tell you what the derived word does.

Loss of prefix r before a root beginning with r

When the base begins with r, the r at the end of ter- is deleted. The root-initial r remains. This produces one written r, not two.

BaseAnalysis with deletionSurface word
rasater- + rasa β†’ te- + rasaterasa
rekamter- + rekam β†’ te- + rekamterekam
rendahter- + rendah β†’ te- + rendahterendah

The notation te- in the middle column represents the allomorph after deletion. It is not an instruction to strip the root’s r. Surface terasa contains te + rasa, and terekam contains te + rekam.

Getaran kecil masih terasa di lantai dua.

A slight vibration can still be felt on the second floor.

Seluruh percakapan terekam oleh kamera keamanan.

The entire conversation was recorded by the security camera.

Harga sayur di pasar ini termasuk yang terendah di kota.

Vegetable prices at this market are among the lowest in the city.

English spelling offers no reason to expect this Indonesian deletion. Learners often either retain both r letters (terrasa) or remove the root consonant and lose sight of rasa. The correct analysis deletes only the prefix-final r.

R-loss before many C-er-C bases

The prefix-final r is also commonly lost when the first syllable of the base has a consonant + schwa e + r + consonant pattern. Traditional analysis abbreviates this as C-er-C. In ordinary orthography, the e remains unaccented.

Pencuri itu tepergok petugas saat mencoba membuka jendela.

The thief was caught by an officer while trying to open the window.

Lembaga itu dikenal sebagai sumber informasi tepercaya.

That institution is known as a trusted source of information.

Tepergok reflects ter- + pergok with loss of the prefix r. Standard tepercaya reflects the same tendency with percaya, although terpercaya is also widely accepted. The variation is real: r-loss in this broader environment is less exceptionless than before a root-initial r.

Gunakan hanya situs tepercaya saat memasukkan data pribadi.

Use only trusted sites when entering personal data.

There is no honest one-line rule that predicts every lexical exception. Treat root-initial r deletion as robust, then verify established spelling for C-er-C bases.

Limited tel- forms

The forms telanjur and telantar show tel- in common standard usage. Variants terlanjur and terlantar also occur, and dictionary treatment differs. This is a small lexical set, not a productive instruction to replace ter- with tel- before any vowel.

Kami sudah telanjur memesan tiket untuk hari Sabtu.

We had already gone ahead and booked tickets for Saturday.

Bangunan telantar itu akan diperbaiki tahun depan.

That abandoned building will be repaired next year.

These words should be stored in their accepted surface shapes. Their meanings are also lexicalized and are treated on the usage page.

Which bases accept ter-?

Productive ter- attaches especially to verbal bases and to adjectives that support an established superlative. It does not freely convert every noun or function word into a predicate.

Kaca jendela itu terpecah akibat benturan keras.

That windowpane split into pieces because of a hard impact.

Nama pemenang sudah tertulis di papan pengumuman.

The winner’s name is already written on the noticeboard.

Ini rute tercepat menuju stasiun.

This is the fastest route to the station.

The forms terpecah, tertulis, and tercepat belong to established verbal or adjectival patterns. A possible-looking string is not automatically an Indonesian word. Root category narrows the possibilities, while lexical usage decides which formations are conventional.

Superlative attachment is productive with many gradable adjectives, but not with expressions that are not naturally ordered on a scale. Verbal ter- is also selective: some roots prefer di-, a modal plus di-, or a lexical alternative.

Recovering the dictionary base

Dictionaries often organize families under the base, so surface allomorphy must be reversed accurately.

Surface wordRecoverDo not infer
terbukabukaerbuka
terjatuhjatuherjatuh
terasarasaasa
terekamrekamekam
tepercayapercayaercaya

The apparent boundary is not always after the letters ter. Compare ter-buka conceptually with te-rasa. Searching a digital dictionary for both the whole word and the recovered base is often the fastest confirmation.

πŸ’‘
For an unfamiliar form beginning in ter- or te-, test the canonical base and the r-loss analysis separately. Surface letters do not always reveal the morpheme boundary.

Orthography

Use ter- with a hyphen only as an abstract affix label or in an analysis such as ter- + buka. Write actual lowercase Indonesian words solid: terbuka, terjatuh, terlihat, tertinggi, terasa, terekam. EYD V does not insert a teaching hyphen at the morpheme boundary. See the affix spelling guide.

Common Mistakes

1. Writing the abstract label literally

❌ Pintu belakang masih ter-buka.

Incorrect ordinary spelling β€” the prefix attaches solidly to a lowercase base.

βœ… Semua pintu sudah terbuka.

All the doors are open now.

2. Retaining both r sounds before an r-initial base

❌ Getarannya masih terrasa sampai sekarang.

Incorrect allomorphy β€” the prefix-final r is deleted before rasa.

βœ… Getarannya masih terasa sampai sekarang.

The vibration can still be felt now.

3. Deleting r where the canonical prefix remains

❌ Jendela kamar masih tebuka.

Incorrect overapplication β€” buka does not trigger r-loss.

βœ… Jendela kamar masih terbuka.

The bedroom window is still open.

4. Doubling r before rekam

❌ Wawancara itu terrekam dengan jelas.

Incorrect allomorphy β€” retain root rekam but delete the prefix-final r.

βœ… Wawancara itu terekam dengan jelas.

The interview was recorded clearly.

5. Attaching ter- freely to a noun

❌ Tas kecil itu terbuku agar mudah dibawa.

Incorrect invented derivative β€” buku does not form this adjective with ter-.

βœ… Tas kecil itu berbentuk seperti buku agar mudah dibawa.

That small bag is shaped like a book so it is easy to carry.

Key Takeaways

  • The canonical template is ter- + base, written solid in actual words.
  • Before root-initial r, delete the prefix-final r but retain the root consonant: terasa, terekam.
  • R-loss also occurs before many C-er-C bases, with lexical variation such as tepercaya/terpercaya.
  • Telanjur and telantar belong to a limited lexical set, not a productive tel- rule.
  • The same prefix spans verbal and adjectival bases; category and context determine the resulting function.
