ter-: Meanings and Derivational Network

The prefix ter- has four major semantic territories: a resulting state (terbuka “open”), an uncontrolled event (terjatuh “fall unintentionally”), ability or perceptibility—especially under negation (tidak terlihat “cannot be seen”)—and a superlative endpoint (tertinggi “highest”). These are not arbitrary homonyms.

Across the network, an intentional actor is backgrounded and an endpoint is prominent. A state foregrounds the result, an accidental event lowers actor control, an abilitative predicates whether an endpoint can be reached, and a superlative selects the endpoint of a scale. This page develops those meanings; formation and allomorphy, then valency and register, remain on the other two ter- pages.

The four-root network

Rootter- formPrimary readingWhat is prominent
buka “open”terbukaopen/result state; contextually uncontrolled or achieved openingthe open endpoint
jatuh “fall”terjatuhunintended or sudden fallthe subject undergoing the event
lihat “see”terlihatvisible/can be seenthe perceptible theme
tinggi “high”tertinggihighestthe upper endpoint of a scale

Pintu ruang rapat sudah terbuka.

The meeting-room door is already open.

Saya terjatuh saat menginjak lantai yang basah.

I fell when I stepped on the wet floor.

Tulisan di papan tidak terlihat dari baris belakang.

The writing on the board cannot be seen from the back row.

Gedung itu adalah bangunan tertinggi di kota ini.

That building is the tallest structure in this city.

English uses unrelated resources—adjectives, adverbs such as accidentally, modal can, and superlative -est. Indonesian lets one morphological family organize them, but the whole word and construction still determine the translation.

💡
Look for the missing foregrounded controller. If the clause highlights a state, something undergone, a reachable result, or a scale endpoint rather than an intentional actor, a ter- reading becomes plausible.

Stative results: what condition holds?

Stative ter- describes a condition, often one that can be understood as the result of an earlier event. There is no asserted action and therefore no freely expressible actor.

Jendela kamar masih tertutup meskipun udara panas.

The bedroom window is still closed even though the air is hot.

Nama semua peserta sudah tercatat dalam sistem.

The names of all participants are already recorded in the system.

Desa itu terletak sekitar lima kilometer dari pantai.

That village is located about five kilometers from the coast.

Patung kecil itu terbuat dari kayu jati.

That small statue is made of teak.

The root contributes the relevant result: tutup supplies closedness, catat a recorded status, letak a location, and buat a created composition. The ter- construction presents that result as the condition that matters now.

Compare an action with its result:

Petugas menutup gerbang pukul sepuluh malam.

The officer closes the gate at ten at night.

Gerbang ditutup oleh petugas pukul sepuluh malam.

The gate is closed by the officer at ten at night; this reports the action.

Gerbang tertutup sepanjang malam.

The gate remains closed throughout the night; this describes the state.

English is closed can be eventive or stative. Indonesian often makes the distinction explicit through di- versus ter- and context.

Uncontrolled, sudden, or unintended events

“Accidental” is a useful label but too narrow. This family also includes involuntary, unexpected, sudden, or agentless events. The subject undergoes the event without being presented as its deliberate controller.

Dompet saya tertinggal di taksi.

I accidentally left my wallet in the taxi.

Dia tertidur di sofa sambil menunggu kabar.

He/She fell asleep on the sofa while waiting for news.

Rina tersandung kabel dan hampir terjatuh.

Rina tripped over a cable and almost fell.

Buku Anda terbawa oleh saya; maaf, saya kira itu buku saya.

I took your book by mistake; sorry, I thought it was mine.

In tertinggal, the relevant endpoint is the wallet’s being left behind; the owner’s deliberate intention is explicitly absent. Tertidur presents the transition into sleep as not fully controlled. Terbawa is passive-like: the book is the affected theme, while the mistaken carrier is secondary.

Obat itu terminum oleh anak kecil karena dikira sirup.

The medicine was accidentally drunk by a small child because it was mistaken for syrup.

Not every event must be a mistake. Terkejut “be startled” and tersenyum “smile” can be grouped here because the response is treated as spontaneous or not deliberately engineered.

Saya terkejut ketika lampu tiba-tiba padam.

I was startled when the lights suddenly went out.

Dia tersenyum saat membaca pesan dari ibunya.

He/She smiled when reading a message from his/her mother.

These frequent words are partly lexicalized; a speaker need not consciously compute “uncontrolled smile” every time.

Ability, perceptibility, and achievable endpoints

Abilitative ter- asks whether the action’s result can be reached. It is especially frequent under tidak, belum, or tak, where English often uses cannot, un-...-able, or in-...-ible.

Tulisan sekecil ini tidak terbaca tanpa kacamata.

Writing this small cannot be read without glasses.

Suara pengumuman tidak terdengar dari luar gedung.

The announcement cannot be heard from outside the building.

Daerah itu belum terjangkau jaringan internet.

That area is not yet reached by the internet network.

Kesalahan kecil masih dapat terdeteksi oleh sistem.

Small errors can still be detected by the system.

The theme becomes the grammatical center: writing is readable, a sound audible, an area reachable, an error detectable. An actor or perceiver is often irrelevant and omitted.

Masalah serumit ini tidak mungkin terselesaikan dalam satu pertemuan.

A problem this complex cannot possibly be resolved in a single meeting.

Akhirnya tutup botol itu terbuka juga.

At last, the bottle cap finally came open/was successfully opened.

Positive ability readings exist, but context must support “managed to” or an achievable result. In everyday language, bisa/dapat + di- is often a transparent alternative: Masalah ini tidak dapat diselesaikan.

💡
Negation strongly favors the ability reading: tidak terbaca is normally “cannot be read,” not “was not accidentally read.” Without negation, real-world context carries more of the disambiguation.

Superlative endpoint on a scale

With established gradable adjectives, ter- selects the highest or lowest point within a comparison domain.

Gunung Kerinci adalah gunung berapi tertinggi di Indonesia.

Mount Kerinci is the highest volcano in Indonesia.

Ini rute terpendek dari hotel ke stasiun.

This is the shortest route from the hotel to the station.

Keselamatan penumpang tetap menjadi prioritas terpenting.

Passenger safety remains the most important priority.

Harga terendah tersedia untuk pemesanan sebelum akhir bulan.

The lowest price is available for bookings before the end of the month.

The domain—di Indonesia, the set of possible routes, all priorities, available prices—licenses the superlative endpoint. Ter- superlatives are compact and frequent in formal, journalistic, and fixed evaluative vocabulary (formal). Productive paling + adjective is often more flexible in conversation.

Menurut saya, warung ini paling enak di sekitar kampus.

In my opinion, this food stall is the best-tasting one around campus.

Superlative tertinggi is not semantically accidental. Endpoint prominence, rather than low control alone, connects it to the wider network.

Polysemy in one surface word

The same ter- word can support several readings when its base and context allow them. Terbuka is a classic case.

Pintu itu terbuka sejak pagi.

That door has been open since morning. (state)

Pintu itu tiba-tiba terbuka sendiri karena angin.

The door suddenly opened by itself because of the wind. (uncontrolled event)

Setelah dicoba beberapa kali, pintu itu akhirnya terbuka juga.

After several attempts, the door was finally able to be opened. (achieved endpoint)

Likewise, terbaca under negation usually means “readable/can be read,” but in Pesan pribadinya terbaca oleh orang lain, context can mean it was read unintentionally by someone else.

Pesan pribadinya terbaca oleh rekan kerja yang meminjam laptopnya.

His/Her private message was accidentally read by a coworker who borrowed the laptop.

Polysemy is resolved by aspect, negation, agent expression, and plausibility. Memorizing one English gloss for the prefix erases precisely the distinctions Indonesian is encoding.

Lexicalized territory

Some common words only partly fit the productive network: tertawa “laugh,” tersenyum “smile,” terlambat “late,” termasuk “including,” terutama “especially,” and terhadap “toward/regarding.” Several are no longer best analyzed as a freely attached prefix in everyday grammar.

Rapat dimulai terlambat karena listrik padam.

The meeting started late because the power went out.

Semua biaya, termasuk pajak, sudah tercantum dalam tagihan.

All costs, including tax, are already listed on the bill.

Learn these as whole lexical items while recognizing their historical shape. The usage page develops why dictionary segmentation does not guarantee a compositional modern reading.

Orthography

Write actual words solid: terbuka, terjatuh, terlihat, tertinggi. Use ter- with a hyphen only as an abstract linguistic label. Where allomorphy deletes the prefix-final r, preserve the established surface form such as terasa, not terrasa. Full formation belongs on the formation page.

Common Mistakes

1. Using a stative form for a deliberate action

❌ Pintu kantor terbuka oleh petugas setiap pukul delapan.

Incorrect for a scheduled deliberate action — terbuka foregrounds the open state, not the officer’s action.

✅ Pintu kantor dibuka oleh petugas setiap pukul delapan.

The office door is opened by an officer every day at eight.

2. Adding an actor to tertulis when reporting the writing event

❌ Surat itu tertulis oleh Rina tadi pagi.

Incorrect for ‘Rina wrote the letter this morning’ — tertulis presents the written state.

✅ Surat itu ditulis oleh Rina tadi pagi.

The letter was written by Rina this morning.

3. Keeping English experiencer-first order with terlihat

❌ Saya tidak terlihat tulisan kecil itu.

Incorrect for ‘I cannot see that small writing’ — terlihat centers the visible theme, not an active perceiver subject.

✅ Saya tidak bisa melihat tulisan kecil itu.

I cannot see that small writing.

4. Combining a superlative with daripada

❌ Menara ini tertinggi daripada gedung sebelah.

Incorrect comparison — daripada requires the comparative lebih tinggi.

✅ Menara ini lebih tinggi daripada gedung sebelah.

This tower is taller than the building next door.

5. Giving an accidental intransitive a direct object

❌ Saya terjatuh gelas itu dari meja.

Incorrect — terjatuh presents the falling participant as subject and does not take gelas as an object.

✅ Gelas itu terjatuh dari meja ketika saya menyenggolnya.

The glass fell off the table when I bumped it.

Key Takeaways

  • Stative, uncontrolled, abilitative, and superlative readings share low actor prominence or endpoint prominence.
  • The base supplies the result or scale; context, negation, and syntax select the reading.
  • Di- reports a deliberate/eventive passive action, while stative ter- describes the resulting condition.
  • Negation strongly favors ability: tidak terlihat, tidak terbaca, belum terselesaikan.
  • Learn lexicalized ter- words as wholes and never assign the prefix one fixed English translation.
