There is no single valency frame for se-. A one-unit form such as seorang guru builds a noun phrase that can serve as a clause argument; an equative such as setinggi kakaknya takes a comparison standard; se-Indonesia and sepanjang jalan delimit an event’s domain; setibanya di rumah forms a temporal frame. The prefix organizes a bounded extent, but the base and construction determine the syntax.
This page focuses on those argument patterns, their competitors, lexicalized exceptions, and formal–conversational choices. The formation page handles surface structure; the semantic network page explains what unifies these constructions.
One-unit forms build noun phrases
With a classifier or measure base, se- creates a singular quantity expression. The whole phrase—not the prefix by itself—fills subject, object, or another noun-phrase position.
Seorang teknisi memeriksa jaringan kantor pagi ini.
A technician inspected the office network this morning.
Manajer memanggil seorang teknisi untuk memeriksa jaringan.
The manager called a technician to inspect the network.
Kami melihat seekor rusa di tepi hutan.
We saw a deer at the edge of the forest.
Tolong kirimkan selembar salinan kepada setiap peserta.
Please send one copy to each participant.
Seorang does not make memeriksa transitive, and seekor does not license the object of melihat. The verbs determine clause valency; the se- phrases package the participants as one classified unit.
Classifier choice remains semantic: orang for humans, ekor for animals, lembar for sheets. English a/an does not encode these distinctions.
Seorang, satu orang, and a bare human noun
Seorang + human noun is useful for introducing one new individual, especially in narrative and reports. Satu orang emphasizes exact headcount, while a bare noun can be generic or leave number to context.
Seorang pelanggan menemukan dompet di dekat kasir.
A customer found a wallet near the checkout.
Hanya satu orang pelanggan yang mengajukan keluhan.
Only one customer filed a complaint.
Pelanggan berhak meminta bukti pembayaran.
Customers are entitled to request proof of payment.
The first opens a discourse file for one customer. The second contrasts one with a larger possible number. The third is generic. Treating seorang as a mandatory equivalent of English a erases these discourse differences.
Equatives license a comparison standard
Compact se- + scalar adjective is followed directly by its standard. That standard is not a verbal object and does not take dengan or daripada.
Dimas sekarang setinggi kakaknya.
Dimas is now as tall as his older sibling.
Tas ini tidak seberat koper yang saya bawa kemarin.
This bag is not as heavy as the suitcase I carried yesterday.
Tim kecil itu bekerja secepat tim yang beranggotakan dua kali lebih banyak orang.
That small team works as quickly as the team with twice as many members.
Bagi warga, ketersediaan air bersih sepenting layanan kesehatan.
For residents, clean-water availability is as important as healthcare.
The analytic competitor is sama + adjective + dengan:
Dimas sekarang sama tinggi dengan kakaknya.
Dimas is now the same height as his older sibling.
This construction is often clearer with a complex adjective phrase.
Penjelasan baru juga mudah dipahami, sama seperti penjelasan sebelumnya.
The new explanation is also easy to understand, just like the previous one.
Forcing se- onto every multiword expression is not productive. Simple scalar bases readily form setinggi, seberat, secepat; longer phrases often favor an analytic paraphrase such as juga...sama seperti.
Measured extent can resemble equality
Some se- adjectives introduce a value rather than a second comparison object. Formal reporting often uses sebesar for an amount and setinggi for a measured level.
Perusahaan mencatat kerugian sebesar lima ratus juta rupiah.
The company recorded losses amounting to five hundred million rupiah. (formal)
Gelombang diperkirakan setinggi tiga meter.
The waves are estimated to be three meters high. (formal)
The number fixes a point on the scale supplied by besar or tinggi. In less compressed prose, use a noun such as jumlah, nilai, or ketinggian; in conversation, a plain predicate is often more natural.
Kerugiannya sekitar lima ratus juta rupiah.
The loss is around five hundred million rupiah.
Avoid redundant combinations. Mencapai ketinggian tiga meter is already sufficient; edit wordy mencapai ketinggian setinggi tiga meter to the leaner form in careful prose.
Whole-domain forms behave as extent expressions
Se-Indonesia, sepanjang jalan, and related extent forms delimit where or when a state or event holds. They are usually adjunct-like rather than selected objects. A form such as seisi rumah, by contrast, can build a quantified noun phrase meaning “the whole household/everyone in the house.”
Pengumuman itu berlaku bagi seluruh cabang se-Indonesia.
That announcement applies to all branches throughout Indonesia.
Relawan menanam pohon sepanjang jalan menuju sekolah.
Volunteers planted trees all along the road to the school.
Lampu darurat menyala sepanjang malam.
The emergency lights remained on throughout the night.
Seisi rumah ikut mencari kunci yang hilang.
Everyone in the house helped look for the missing key.
Di seluruh Indonesia is a transparent analytic competitor to se-Indonesia. The prefixed form is compact and common in institutional, journalistic, and promotional prose (formal); the analytic prepositional phrase works across registers.
Layanan ini tersedia di seluruh Indonesia.
This service is available throughout Indonesia.
Not every proper name automatically defines a useful whole domain. Se-ASEAN is established where ASEAN membership is the relevant set; an invented se-Budi has no ordinary domain reading.
Temporal se-...-nya frames the main clause
Setibanya, sesampainya, and sepulangnya introduce a subordinate temporal frame. Their understood mover normally matches the main-clause subject.
Setibanya di kantor, Rina langsung memeriksa surelnya.
Upon arriving at the office, Rina immediately checked her email.
Sesampainya di desa, para relawan membagikan air minum.
Once they reached the village, the volunteers distributed drinking water.
Sepulangnya dari sekolah, Arif membantu ibunya di warung.
After returning from school, Arif helps his mother at the food stall.
The fronted phrase has no overt subject, so the reader assigns it to Rina, para relawan, or Arif. If the subordinate event has a different participant, an explicit finite clause is clearer:
Setelah kereta tiba di stasiun, para penumpang segera turun.
After the train arrived at the station, the passengers got off immediately.
Writing Setibanya di stasiun, para penumpang turun makes the passengers the understood arrivers and is natural if they reached the station on the train. Writing it when only the train is intended as arriver creates a misleading control relation.
In conversation, begitu sampai, pas sampai, or setelah sampai is often preferred (informal).
Begitu sampai rumah, aku langsung mandi.
As soon as I got home, I took a shower. (informal)
Four root families across register
The following pairs preserve the practical message while changing construction and register.
Orang → seorang
Seorang petugas akan mendampingi setiap kelompok selama kunjungan.
An officer will accompany each group during the visit. (formal)
Nanti ada petugas yang ikut tiap kelompok.
An officer will go along with each group later. (informal)
Tinggi → setinggi
Permukaan air diperkirakan naik setinggi dua meter.
The water level is expected to rise by two meters. (formal)
Katanya airnya bisa naik sampai dua meter.
They say the water could rise up to two meters. (informal)
Indonesia → se-Indonesia
Program tersebut akan dilaksanakan secara serentak se-Indonesia.
The program will be implemented simultaneously throughout Indonesia. (formal)
Programnya bakal jalan bareng di seluruh Indonesia.
The program is going to run at the same time all over Indonesia. (informal)
Tiba → setibanya
Setibanya di lokasi, petugas segera melakukan pemeriksaan awal.
Upon arriving at the site, the officers immediately conducted a preliminary inspection. (formal)
Begitu sampai sana, petugasnya langsung periksa keadaan.
As soon as they got there, the officers checked the situation. (informal)
These are paraphrase relations, not automatic operations such as “delete se- in speech.” Conversation redistributes the meaning across ada, sampai, di seluruh, and an overt quantity phrase.
Lexicalized forms have independent complement patterns
Frequent se-initial words must be learned with their modern syntax. Sebagai takes a role expression; seperti introduces resemblance; sesuai commonly selects dengan; selama introduces a duration or clause.
Nadia bekerja sebagai editor di sebuah penerbit.
Nadia works as an editor at a publishing house.
Awan itu terlihat seperti asap dari kejauhan.
That cloud looks like smoke from a distance.
Jadwal baru sudah sesuai dengan kebutuhan peserta.
The new schedule already suits the participants' needs.
Kami tinggal di rumah paman selama liburan sekolah.
We stayed at our uncle's house during the school holiday.
None of these complement patterns follows automatically from a general translation of se-. Sesuai dengan must be learned as a collocation, and sebagai editor names a role rather than scalar equality.
Productive schema, lexical limits
The productive center includes classifiers and measures, simple gradable adjectives, recognized domains, and a restricted temporal family. Innovation is possible, especially with institutional domains, but acceptability depends on shared interpretation.
Do not coin every form that English expresses with as, one, or throughout. With a multiword expression such as penuh perhatian, use a natural paraphrase rather than an opaque sepenuh perhatian; use di seluruh kompleks, not an improvised domain form if the prefixed version is not conventional.
Dita dan kakaknya sama-sama penuh perhatian.
Dita and her older sibling are both attentive.
Orthography
Use se- only as the abstract label. Write lowercase derivatives solid: seorang, setinggi, setibanya. Use the capital-boundary hyphen in se-Indonesia. In the temporal pattern, attach outer -nya: se- + tiba + -nya, not se tiba nya.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating seorang as a universal article
❌ Kami melihat seorang kuda di dekat sungai.
Incorrect classifier choice — seorang is restricted to humans.
✅ Kami melihat seekor kuda di dekat sungai.
We saw a horse near the river.
2. Adding dengan to a compact equative
❌ Meja ini sepanjang dengan dinding itu.
Incorrect — the comparison standard follows a se- adjective directly.
✅ Meja ini sepanjang dinding itu.
This table is as long as that wall.
3. Forcing se- onto a multiword adjective
❌ Dita sepenuh perhatian kakaknya.
Incorrect invented equative — penuh perhatian is a multiword phrase.
✅ Dita dan kakak perempuannya sama-sama penuh perhatian.
Dita and her older sister are both attentive.
4. Leaving the temporal participant dangling
❌ Setibanya di kantor, hujan deras mulai turun saat Rina membuka pintu.
Faulty control — the grammar initially makes hujan deras appear to have arrived.
✅ Setibanya di kantor, Rina membuka pintu saat hujan deras mulai turun.
Upon arriving at the office, Rina opened the door as heavy rain began.
5. Treating sebagai as a productive equative
❌ Rina sebagai tinggi kakaknya.
Incorrect — sebagai introduces a role, not equality on an adjective scale.
✅ Rina setinggi kakaknya.
Rina is as tall as her older sibling.
Key Takeaways
- Se- does not impose one valency frame; the base construction determines the following participant or complement.
- One-unit forms build noun phrases, equatives take standards, whole-domain forms delimit extent, and temporal forms frame a clause.
- Match the understood mover in setibanya to a sensible main-clause subject.
- Analytic competitors—satu orang, sama...dengan, di seluruh, begitu sampai—often differ in focus or register.
- Learn lexical items such as sebagai, seperti, and sesuai dengan as complete constructions.
