se-: Meanings and Derivational Network

The historical “one” value of se- survives in several apparently different constructions. Seorang packages one human unit; setinggi matches one degree to another; se-Indonesia treats Indonesia as one complete domain; setibanya establishes one arrival boundary from which the next event is viewed.

This shared bounded-extent logic is a powerful mnemonic, but it is not a fixed English translation. This page develops the semantic network and its lexicalized edges. Formation and spelling belong on the formation page; valency, competitors, and register belong on the usage page.

The four-root network

BaseDerived formReadingBounded extent
orang “person”seorangone human unitone classified individual
tinggi “high/tall”setinggiequal degree or measured heightone matched point on a scale
Indonesiase-Indonesiathroughout/across Indonesiaone complete geographic domain
tiba “arrive”setibanyaupon arrivingthe arrival boundary

Seorang perawat menemani pasien itu sampai keluarganya datang.

A nurse stayed with the patient until the family arrived.

Sekarang pohon itu sudah setinggi lantai dua.

The tree is now as tall as the second floor.

Kompetisi tersebut terbuka bagi pelajar se-Indonesia.

The competition is open to students throughout Indonesia.

Setibanya di bandara, kami menerima pesan dari pihak hotel.

Upon arriving at the airport, we received a message from the hotel.

English distributes these meanings among one/a, as...as, throughout, and upon. Translating the whole construction is therefore essential.

💡
Use “one bounded extent” as a bridge, not a gloss: one individual, one matched measure, one complete domain, or one event boundary.

One-unit forms

With classifiers and measures, se- packages one unit. The base specifies what kind of unit is being counted.

Seorang saksi melihat mobil itu meninggalkan tempat parkir.

A witness saw the car leave the parking area.

Kami menemukan seekor anak kucing di belakang gudang.

We found a kitten behind the warehouse.

Tolong sisakan sepotong kue untuk Dimas.

Please save a piece of cake for Dimas.

Dia hanya membutuhkan selembar kertas untuk mencatat alamatnya.

He/She only needs one sheet of paper to write down the address.

Saya harus menyelesaikan laporan ini dalam sehari.

I have to finish this report in one day.

Seorang is not a general article. Its base orang still restricts it to humans. Likewise, seekor selects animals and selembar packages a thin sheet-like unit. English a hides these classifier distinctions.

One-unit se- can also build larger number words: seratus “one hundred,” seribu “one thousand.” Here ratus and ribu name number units.

Lebih dari seratus warga menghadiri pertemuan itu.

More than one hundred residents attended the meeting.

The unity is numerical, but the resulting word belongs to the numeral system rather than acting like an English indefinite article.

Equality: one matched degree

With a scalar adjective, se- places one referent at the degree supplied by a comparison standard. The base contributes the scale—height, price, speed, importance, or another gradable property.

Adik saya sudah setinggi ibu kami.

My younger sibling is already as tall as our mother.

Biaya perbaikannya hampir semahal membeli mesin baru.

The repair cost is almost as expensive as buying a new machine.

Kereta lokal itu tidak secepat kereta ekspres.

That local train is not as fast as the express train.

Bagi kami, akses air bersih sepenting pembangunan jalan.

For us, access to clean water is as important as road construction.

The comparison standard follows directly: setinggi ibu, not setinggi dengan ibu. Indonesian compresses both English occurrences of as into the prefixed adjective.

Equality need not be mathematically exact unless context demands precision. Hampir setinggi overtly marks approximation, while persis setinggi can insist on an exact match.

Rak baru itu persis setinggi lemari di sebelahnya.

The new shelf is exactly as tall as the cabinet beside it.

Negative tidak se-... generally means the subject falls short on the named scale:

Jalan memutar itu tidak sejauh yang saya bayangkan.

That detour is not as far as I imagined.

Whole-domain and coextensive readings

In this branch, se- treats the base as a complete spatial, temporal, social, or scalar domain. English commonly chooses throughout, across, along, the whole, or as much as.

Pengumuman itu disiarkan serentak oleh stasiun radio se-Indonesia.

The announcement was broadcast simultaneously by radio stations throughout Indonesia.

Berita kemenangan itu menarik perhatian media sedunia.

News of the victory attracted worldwide media attention.

Warga memasang lampu sepanjang jalan menuju balai desa.

Residents installed lights all along the road to the village hall.

Hujan turun sepanjang malam tanpa henti.

It rained throughout the night without stopping.

Seisi kantor terdiam ketika pengumuman itu dibacakan.

Everyone in the office fell silent when the announcement was read.

Mereka berjanji akan saling mendukung seumur hidup.

They promised to support each other for their entire lives.

The base supplies the domain: Indonesia a named territory, jalan a path, malam a temporal interval, isi the contents or inhabitants, umur a lifetime. Se- presents that domain as coextensive with the event.

Proper-name spelling preserves the difference between morphology and capitalization: se-Indonesia uses a hyphen, while lowercase sepanjang is solid.

Temporal boundary expressions

With selected transition and motion bases plus -nya, se- forms an expression meaning “upon/once X happens.” It establishes the endpoint of the subordinate event as the starting boundary for the main event.

Setibanya di rumah, Rina langsung menelepon ibunya.

Upon arriving home, Rina immediately called her mother.

Sesampainya di puncak, para pendaki beristirahat sejenak.

Once they reached the summit, the hikers rested briefly.

Sepulangnya dari rumah sakit, Pak Amir harus banyak beristirahat.

After returning from the hospital, Mr. Amir has to rest a great deal.

These expressions are especially common in narrative and edited prose (formal) and also occur in elevated storytelling (literary). Their understood participant is normally supplied by the main clause: the person who arrives in Setibanya di rumah, Rina... is Rina. The usage page treats this control relation and alternatives such as begitu sampai.

The boundary meaning is not simply “one arrival” counted like a noun. The historical unity has grammaticalized into a conjunction-like frame. That is a semantic extension, not a reason to give se- one English word everywhere.

Polysemy: the base and context choose a branch

Some surface forms occupy more than one part of the network. Sepanjang may compare equal length or cover a complete extent.

Papan ini sepanjang meja makan kami.

This board is as long as our dining table. (equal degree)

Toko-toko kecil berjajar sepanjang jalan utama.

Small shops line the entire main road. (coextensive domain)

Sebesar can make a comparison or introduce a measured amount, especially in formal reporting.

Kotak itu sebesar koper kabin.

That box is as big as a carry-on suitcase.

Perusahaan mengumumkan investasi sebesar dua miliar rupiah.

The company announced an investment amounting to two billion rupiah. (formal)

In both cases, besar supplies a magnitude scale. The comparison matches another object’s size; the amount construction fixes the magnitude at a number.

The form sekali also warns against mechanical segmentation. As a numeral it means “once,” while post-adjectival sekali is a degree word meaning “very.”

Saya baru sekali mengunjungi kota itu.

I have visited that city only once.

Pemandangan dari puncak indah sekali.

The view from the summit is very beautiful.

The second use is best learned as the independent degree word sekali, not recomputed as productive “one + kali” each time.

Lexicalized territory

Many common words beginning with se have conventional meanings and categories that exceed, or no longer transparently display, the productive network: sebagai “as/in the role of,” seperti “like,” sebelum “before,” setelah “after,” selama “during/for/as long as,” sehingga “so that,” and sekitar “around/about.”

Dewi bekerja sebagai penerjemah lepas.

Dewi works as a freelance translator.

Tas ini terlihat seperti milik saya, tetapi warnanya berbeda.

This bag looks like mine, but the color is different.

Kami menunggu sekitar dua puluh menit sebelum bus datang.

We waited about twenty minutes before the bus arrived.

Their meanings must be learned with their syntax. Sebagai is not the productive equality of bagai in ordinary modern analysis, and sebelum cannot be translated by inserting “one” before belum.

💡
Productive meaning is strongest when the base and relation remain recoverable. With high-frequency connectors and prepositions, learn the whole construction even if its history contains se-.

Orthography

Write the abstract prefix with a hyphen in analysis: se- + tinggi. Write actual lowercase forms solid: seorang, setinggi, setibanya. Preserve a capital boundary in se-Indonesia. No productive consonant deletion affects the required root families, so never remove a base consonant to imitate meN- allomorphy.

Common Mistakes

1. Assigning se- the fixed translation “one”

❌ Pohon itu satu tinggi rumah kami.

Incorrect word-for-word transfer — the equative form is setinggi.

✅ Pohon itu setinggi rumah kami.

That tree is as tall as our house.

2. Adding dengan after a compact equative

❌ Biaya perbaikannya semahal dengan mesin baru.

Incorrect — the standard follows a se- adjective directly.

✅ Biaya perbaikannya semahal mesin baru.

The repair cost is as expensive as a new machine.

3. Omitting the classifier base

❌ Se guru menunggu di ruang kepala sekolah.

Incorrect — se- cannot serve as a free indefinite article before guru.

✅ Seorang guru menunggu di ruang kepala sekolah.

A teacher is waiting in the principal's office.

4. Writing a proper-name domain solid

❌ Program itu akan diterapkan seIndonesia tahun depan.

Incorrect — capitalization requires the boundary hyphen.

✅ Program itu akan diterapkan se-Indonesia tahun depan.

The program will be implemented throughout Indonesia next year.

5. Giving the temporal frame the wrong participant

❌ Setibanya di stasiun, hujan mulai deras saat Rina turun dari kereta.

Faulty control — the opening phrase makes hujan appear to be what arrived at the station.

✅ Setibanya di stasiun, Rina turun dari kereta saat hujan mulai deras.

Upon arriving at the station, Rina got off the train as the rain became heavy.

Key Takeaways

  • “One bounded extent” connects individual, equal, coextensive, and temporal readings.
  • The base supplies the unit, scale, domain, or transition that se- organizes.
  • Context distinguishes polysemous forms such as sepanjang and sebesar.
  • High-frequency words such as sebagai and sebelum are lexical constructions, not freely predictable derivatives.
  • Translate the entire se- construction rather than assigning the prefix one English gloss.
