Advanced Temporal Clause Linking

Indonesian verbs do not change form to distinguish walk, walked, and had walked. Fine temporal structure is therefore lexical: ketika, saat, sewaktu, sementara, sejak, setelah, and begitu tell the listener how two situations fit on a timeline, while aspect markers such as sedang, sudah, and masih reveal their internal phases and temporal adverbs such as langsung mark the gap between events.

This page analyzes advanced relations between clauses rather than inventorying every time word or reteaching basic clause patterns. The time-reference guide explains how context locates an event in past, present, or future time.

Four timeline questions

Before choosing a linker, decide what relation you mean:

RelationTimelineTypical markers
Overlap or temporal anchoringA occurs during B, or at B's momentketika, saat, sewaktu, sementara
Completed sequenceA ends before B beginssetelah
Starting boundaryA begins at B and extends forwardsejak
Immediate successionB follows as soon as A occursbegitu, often with langsung

Ketika saya sedang menutup toko, listrik di sepanjang jalan padam.

While I was closing the shop, the power went out all along the street.

Setelah petugas selesai memeriksa paspor, kami berjalan menuju gerbang keberangkatan.

After the officer finished checking the passports, we walked toward the departure gate.

Sejak pindah ke Makassar, Rendi lebih sering memasak sendiri.

Since moving to Makassar, Rendi has cooked for himself more often.

Begitu pintu kereta terbuka, para penumpang langsung mencari tempat duduk.

As soon as the train doors opened, the passengers immediately looked for seats.

The verb forms themselves remain menutup, padam, memeriksa, berjalan, pindah, and terbuka. Changing the timeline means changing the linker, aspect marker, or time phraseβ€”not conjugating the verb.

πŸ’‘
Draw two horizontal lines for the events. If the lines overlap, begin with ketika/saat/sewaktu/sementara; if the first ends before the second, use setelah; if one line begins at a named boundary and continues, use sejak; if the gap is effectively zero, use begitu.

Ketika, saat, and sewaktu: anchoring one event to another

Ketika is the broad neutral marker β€œwhen.” It can locate a short event inside a longer one or simply anchor one event to another moment. Aspect and event meaning determine whether there is overlap.

Ketika rapat dimulai, beberapa peserta masih mencari tautan konferensi.

When the meeting began, several participants were still looking for the conference link.

Saya sedang menyeberang ketika seseorang memanggil nama saya dari halte.

I was crossing the road when someone called my name from the bus stop.

Ketika kamu tiba besok, kami mungkin masih berada di bandara.

When you arrive tomorrow, we may still be at the airport.

Saat foregrounds a point or interval as a temporal setting. It also behaves as a time noun in combinations such as pada saat (formal) and saat itu β€œat that time.”

Saat alarm berbunyi, semua teknisi segera meninggalkan ruang mesin.

When the alarm sounded, all the technicians immediately left the engine room.

Pada saat kontrak ditandatangani, kedua pihak telah menerima salinan final.

At the time the contract was signed, both parties had received the final copy. (formal)

Kami baru menyadari kesalahannya saat pesanan sudah dikirim.

We only noticed the error when the order had already been shipped.

Sewaktu means β€œwhen/while, at the time when.” It is common in narratives and careful speech, often evoking a bounded period in someone's life or a past scene.

Sewaktu tinggal di Banda Aceh, Nisa belajar membuat kopi sanger.

While living in Banda Aceh, Nisa learned to make kopi sanger.

Saya berkenalan dengan beliau sewaktu masih bekerja di perpustakaan kota.

I met him or her while I was still working at the city library. (respectful)

Sewaktu kami tiba di lokasi, tim medis sudah mulai menangani korban.

When we arrived at the site, the medical team had already begun treating the victims.

There is genuine overlap among these three markers; no mechanical English translation separates them in every context. Ketika is the safest broad conjunction, saat spotlights the temporal point or setting, and sewaktu often frames a period or narrative scene.

Sementara: simultaneous situations

Temporal sementara sets two situations alongside each other, often with different actors. It commonly means β€œwhile” and encourages the listener to hold both intervals in view.

Sementara ayah mengurus bagasi, ibu membawa anak-anak ke ruang tunggu.

While the father handled the luggage, the mother took the children to the waiting room.

Dokter memeriksa hasil rontgen sementara perawat menyiapkan obat.

The doctor reviewed the X-rays while the nurse prepared the medicine.

Sementara sebagian warga membersihkan selokan, yang lain membagikan air minum.

While some residents cleaned the drains, others handed out drinking water.

Sementara can also mean β€œwhereas,” contrasting facts rather than locating them in time. Context decides whether the clauses overlap temporally, contrast rhetorically, or do both.

Kakaknya memilih bekerja di luar negeri, sementara adiknya tetap mengelola toko keluarga.

The older sibling chose to work abroad, whereas the younger one continued to run the family shop.

In that example, the main point is contrast, not a claim that both decisions happened at the same instant. Do not rely on English while alone; test whether simultaneous duration is part of the intended meaning.

Setelah: completed sequence

Setelah places its event before the event in the other clause. Indonesian does not require a pluperfect form. Sudah, selesai, or event meaning may reinforce completion when that boundary matters.

Setelah hujan reda, pedagang kembali membuka lapaknya.

After the rain stopped, the vendors reopened their stalls.

Kami membayar tagihan setelah pelayan memeriksa jumlahnya sekali lagi.

We paid the bill after the server checked the amount once more.

Setelah semua data sudah dicadangkan, teknisi mengganti perangkat kerasnya.

After all the data had been backed up, the technician replaced the hardware.

Mira menelepon orang tuanya setelah selesai berbicara dengan dokter.

Mira called her parents after she finished speaking with the doctor.

Sudah is not obligatory after setelah: the linker itself orders the events. It becomes useful when the speaker wants to emphasize that the first process had reached its completed state.

Setelah membaca laporan itu, saya mengirimkan tiga pertanyaan kepada penulisnya.

After reading the report, I sent three questions to its author.

Setelah semua peserta sudah duduk, barulah ketua membuka rapat.

Only after all the participants were seated did the chair open the meeting.

The second sentence makes completion contrastive: semua ... sudah establishes that the whole group had reached the required state, and barulah says the next event occurred only then. Without such a contrast, setelah normally supplies enough sequencing by itself.

Sejak: a left boundary with consequences afterward

Sejak identifies the point from which a state, repeated pattern, or continuing relevance extends toward the reference time. Its complement may be a time phrase or a clause.

Sejak hari Senin, lift di gedung sebelah belum berfungsi.

The elevator in the next building has not worked since Monday.

Hubungan mereka menjadi lebih terbuka sejak mereka mulai bekerja dalam satu tim.

Their relationship has become more open since they started working on the same team.

Sejak harga bahan bakar naik, pengeluaran harian kami terus bertambah.

Since fuel prices rose, our daily expenses have continued to increase.

Saya belum menerima kabar apa pun sejak paket itu meninggalkan gudang.

I haven't received any news since the package left the warehouse.

Aspect expressions make the continuation visible: belum keeps a negative state open, terus signals persistence, and repeated lebih sering describes a pattern after the boundary. In the main clause, a completed one-off event with no continuing relevance normally needs a different relation.

Sejak mengikuti kelas malam, Tono lebih jarang melewatkan tenggat.

Since starting evening classes, Tono has missed deadlines less often.

English distinguishes since from for; Indonesian likewise uses sejak for the starting boundary, not the duration itself. Use selama tiga tahun for β€œfor three years.”

Begitu and begitu ... langsung: immediate succession

Clause-initial begitu can mean β€œas soon as.” It treats the first event as the trigger boundary for the second. A main-clause langsung makes the absence of delay explicit.

Begitu bel berbunyi, para siswa bergegas keluar dari kelas.

As soon as the bell rang, the students hurried out of the classroom.

Begitu menerima konfirmasi, saya langsung memesan tiket pulang.

As soon as I received confirmation, I immediately booked a ticket home.

Petugas langsung menghubungi pemadam begitu melihat asap dari gudang.

The officer contacted the fire department immediately upon seeing smoke from the warehouse.

Begitu sidang berakhir, para wartawan langsung mengelilingi kuasa hukum terdakwa.

As soon as the hearing ended, the journalists immediately surrounded the defendant's lawyers.

The two markers have different jobs: begitu establishes the temporal trigger; langsung comments on the promptness of the response. Either can occur alone, but the pair is particularly vivid in narrative and conversation.

Begitu matahari terbit, kabut di lembah mulai menipis.

As soon as the sun rose, the fog in the valley began to thin.

Saya langsung menyimpan nomor itu setelah petugas menyebutkannya.

I saved the number immediately after the officer said it.

The second example uses setelah plus langsung: it asserts order and promptness. Begitu packages the boundary itself as the immediate trigger.

Aspect locates the internal phase

Temporal linkers relate two situations; aspect markers show whether a situation is in progress, complete, continuing, or newly reached. Their combination often supplies distinctions that English expresses through tense forms.

Ketika tamu datang, kami sedang menata hidangan di meja.

When the guests arrived, we were arranging the dishes on the table.

Saat ambulans tiba, polisi sudah menutup kedua jalur.

When the ambulance arrived, the police had already closed both lanes.

Sewaktu saya menelepon, mereka masih menunggu hasil pemeriksaan.

When I called, they were still waiting for the test results.

Begitu diumumkan, perubahan itu baru dipahami oleh sebagian peserta.

As soon as it was announced, the change was only then understood by some participants.

Notice that tiba and menutup do not receive past forms. Sedang creates an ongoing background, sudah marks a prior completed state, masih continues a state through the anchor, and baru identifies a newly reached threshold.

πŸ’‘
Translate English tense only after establishing the Indonesian timeline. A past English translation may be accurate even when the Indonesian predicate contains no overt time marker, because the temporal clause and discourse have already fixed the reference time.

Clause order and EYD V punctuation

An initial temporal subordinate clause is followed by a comma. A final integrated temporal clause normally has no comma. Changing order also changes information structure: initial position establishes the timeline first; final position often identifies when the main event occurred.

Ketika lampu indikator berubah hijau, operator membuka katup perlahan.

When the indicator light turned green, the operator opened the valve slowly.

Operator membuka katup perlahan ketika lampu indikator berubah hijau.

The operator opened the valve slowly when the indicator light turned green.

Begitu semua peserta masuk, panitia menutup pintu aula.

As soon as all the participants entered, the committee closed the hall doors.

Panitia menutup pintu aula setelah semua peserta masuk.

The committee closed the hall doors after all the participants had entered.

Common Mistakes

1. Inventing tense morphology instead of building the timeline

❌ Ketika saya sedang menunggukan bus, hujan mulai turun.

Incorrect β€” menunggukan is not a past progressive form of menunggu.

βœ… Ketika saya sedang menunggu bus, hujan tiba-tiba turun deras.

While I was waiting for the bus, heavy rain suddenly began to fall.

2. Using sementara for a simple sequence

❌ Sementara rapat berakhir, kami pergi makan malam.

Incorrect for the intended sequence β€” sementara suggests overlap or contrast.

βœ… Setelah rapat berakhir, kami pergi makan malam bersama klien.

After the meeting ended, we went to dinner with the client.

3. Using sejak for an isolated completed event

❌ Sejak kemarin, saya mengirim surat itu sekali.

Incorrect for a single completed sending β€” sejak calls for continuation or relevance after the boundary.

βœ… Kemarin, saya mengirim surat itu melalui layanan kilat.

Yesterday, I sent the letter by express service.

4. Putting langsung in the trigger clause

❌ Begitu langsung pintu terbuka, para penonton masuk.

Incorrect placement β€” begitu introduces the trigger; langsung belongs with the prompt response.

βœ… Begitu pintu utama terbuka, para penonton langsung memasuki gedung.

As soon as the main door opened, the spectators immediately entered the building.

5. Misplacing the comma around a temporal clause

❌ Setelah petugas memberi izin kami memasuki ruangan.

Incorrect punctuation β€” an initial temporal clause must be closed with a comma.

βœ… Setelah petugas memberi izin, kami memasuki ruang penyimpanan.

After the officer gave permission, we entered the storage room.

Key Takeaways

  • Use ketika, saat, and sewaktu to anchor an event; their differences concern breadth, focus, and narrative framing rather than verb tense.
  • Use temporal sementara for overlapping situations, but recognize its contrastive β€œwhereas” reading.
  • Use setelah for ordered completion, sejak for a continuing interval from a boundary, and begitu for immediate succession.
  • Use aspect markers to show internal phase: sedang ongoing, sudah completed, masih continuing, and baru newly reached.
  • Let linkers, aspect, time phrases, and context build the timeline; Indonesian verbs remain unchanged.
