Sedang marks an event as ongoing at a reference time. Rina sedang memasak places us inside the cooking event: it has started, has not yet reached its endpoint, and is relevant at that moment. The verb does not acquire tense or an English-style -ing ending.
This page covers progressive meaning, optionality, stable-state restrictions, questions, and neutral/formal register. It does not teach voice formation or individual verb meanings.
Forming the progressive
Place sedang as a separate word before the predicate:
subject + sedang + predicate + complements
Rina sedang memasak sup untuk makan malam.
Rina is cooking soup for dinner.
Anak-anak sedang bermain petak umpet di halaman belakang.
The children are playing hide-and-seek in the backyard.
Petugas sedang memeriksa tiket penumpang.
The officer is checking the passengers' tickets.
Jalan utama sedang diperbaiki oleh pemerintah kota.
The main road is being repaired by the city government.
Affixes stay attached inside the predicate: memasak, memeriksa, diperbaiki. Sedang stays separate. The same form works with every person and number.
Saya sedang menunggu di depan apotek.
I am waiting in front of the pharmacy.
Mereka sedang menunggu di depan apotek.
They are waiting in front of the pharmacy.
The reference time need not be now
An ongoing event is interpreted relative to a contextually supplied time.
Saat saya menelepon tadi malam, Ibu sedang menonton berita.
When I called last night, Mom was watching the news.
Ketika listrik padam, kami sedang makan malam.
When the power went out, we were eating dinner.
Besok pukul dua, saya mungkin sedang mengikuti ujian.
At two tomorrow, I may be taking an exam.
English changes is watching to was eating or may be taking. Indonesian keeps sedang + predicate and lets tadi malam, ketika, or besok pukul dua locate the viewpoint.
Asking what is happening
The required question Apa yang sedang kamu lakukan? asks for the activity unfolding now or at the established reference time.
Apa yang sedang kamu lakukan?
What are you doing?
Saya sedang menyusun daftar belanja.
I am making a shopping list.
Siapa yang sedang berbicara dengan dokter?
Who is talking with the doctor?
Mengapa mesin itu sedang mengeluarkan bunyi aneh?
Why is that machine making a strange noise?
In everyday conversation, Lagi apa? is a common (informal) alternative to Sedang apa? or Apa yang sedang kamu lakukan? The guide to lagi explains its position-sensitive uses.
Sedang highlights dynamic internal stages
Activities such as reading, cooking, waiting, and repairing naturally have an internal duration. Sedang makes that duration visible and often contrasts it with an interruption or another simultaneous event.
Doni sedang mandi, jadi dia tidak bisa menjawab telepon.
Doni is taking a shower, so he cannot answer the phone.
Kami sedang membahas anggaran ketika direktur masuk.
We were discussing the budget when the director entered.
Dokumen itu sedang diunggah; jangan tutup halaman ini.
The document is being uploaded; do not close this page.
Air sungai sedang naik setelah hujan deras di hulu.
The river is rising after heavy rain upstream.
Achievements that are normally instantaneous often need a preparatory or gradual interpretation. Sedang tiba is possible in an unfolding arrival scene but less neutral than akan tiba “will arrive soon” or baru tiba “has just arrived.”
Kereta sedang memasuki stasiun; harap menjauh dari tepi peron.
The train is entering the station; please stay away from the platform edge.
Here memasuki stasiun supplies a process with visible stages, so the progressive is natural.
Stable states usually resist sedang
Stable predicates such as tahu “know,” berasal dari “come from/be from,” berusia “be aged,” and basic possession punya normally describe a state rather than an unfolding activity. English may use an -ing form in special idioms, but Indonesian does not therefore require sedang.
Saya tahu jawabannya sekarang.
I know the answer now.
Keluarga itu berasal dari Flores.
That family comes from Flores.
Anak mereka berusia lima tahun.
Their child is five years old.
Kami punya cukup waktu untuk makan siang.
We have enough time for lunch.
Forms such as sedang tahu, sedang berasal dari, and sedang berusia lima tahun are not neutral progressives. A normally stative predicate can combine with sedang only when context creates a temporary, changing, or activity-like interpretation.
Saya sedang berpikir keras tentang tawaran pekerjaan itu.
I am thinking hard about that job offer.
Berpikir is an active mental process, unlike state tahu.
Sedang is often optional
Indonesian does not require progressive marking whenever English uses be + -ing. A time expression, adverbial clause, or obvious situation can already establish the ongoing reading.
Sekarang saya menunggu di lobi hotel.
I am waiting in the hotel lobby now.
Sekarang saya sedang menunggu di lobi hotel.
I am currently waiting in the hotel lobby.
The second sentence explicitly foregrounds the activity in progress. The first is fully natural because sekarang and the situation provide the current-time reading.
Tolong pelankan suaramu; bayi tidur.
Please lower your voice; the baby is sleeping.
Tolong pelankan suaramu; bayi sedang tidur.
Please lower your voice; the baby is sleeping right now.
Both are possible. Sedang makes the current episode more explicit; bare tidur relies on the immediate context.
Saat hujan mulai turun, kami makan di teras.
When the rain began, we were eating on the terrace.
Saat hujan mulai turun, kami sedang makan di teras.
When the rain began, we were in the middle of eating on the terrace.
The version with sedang strongly selects an ongoing background event interrupted by the rain. The version without it can receive that reading from saat, although it is less explicitly progressive.
English -ing has other jobs
English -ing also builds nouns, complements, and labels. Those uses do not call for sedang.
Berenang baik untuk kesehatan jantung.
Swimming is good for heart health.
Saya suka membaca sebelum tidur.
I like reading before bed.
Mereka pergi berbelanja setelah sarapan.
They go shopping after breakfast.
In these sentences, swimming and reading are general activities, not events being viewed midway through their progress. Translate the function of the English form, not its visible ending.
Register: neutral and formal
Sedang is standard in neutral speech, writing, instructions, and formal reporting. In relaxed conversation, preverbal lagi is often more frequent, especially in Jakarta-influenced colloquial Indonesian.
Tim penyelamat sedang mencari dua pendaki yang belum kembali.
The rescue team is searching for two hikers who have not returned. (neutral/news)
Aku lagi cari kunci motor.
I'm looking for the motorcycle key. (informal)
Tengah can replace sedang in formal, journalistic, or focused prose, but it is not the default progressive in every conversation. The neighboring pages develop those register choices.
Negation and ordering
Use tidak sedang + predicate to deny that an event is in progress. With a modal, the intended scope determines order.
Rina tidak sedang bekerja; dia sedang cuti.
Rina is not working; she is on leave.
Saya mungkin sedang tidur ketika kamu tiba.
I may be sleeping when you arrive.
Pasien itu tidak boleh sedang makan saat pemeriksaan dimulai.
The patient must not be eating when the examination begins. (formal instruction)
The last sequence is possible because the prohibition concerns the state of being mid-meal at the examination time. In simpler instructions, Pasien tidak boleh makan sebelum pemeriksaan is clearer.
Common Mistakes
1. Attaching sedang to the verb
❌ Kami sedangmenunggu hasil pemeriksaan.
Incorrect spelling—sedang is a separate aspect word.
✅ Kami sedang menunggu hasil pemeriksaan.
We are waiting for the examination results.
2. Adding an English-style ending
❌ Rina sedang memasaking makan malam.
Incorrect—Indonesian does not add an -ing ending after sedang.
✅ Rina sedang memasak makan malam.
Rina is cooking dinner.
3. Using sedang with a stable fact
❌ Pak Budi sedang berasal dari Semarang.
Incorrect—origin is a stable relation, not an unfolding event.
✅ Pak Budi berasal dari Semarang.
Mr. Budi comes from Semarang.
4. Translating every English -ing form as sedang
❌ Saya suka sedang membaca di kereta.
Incorrect—reading is the general activity liked, not an event in progress.
✅ Saya suka membaca di kereta.
I like reading on the train.
5. Putting sedang after the predicate
❌ Saya menunggu sedang di depan klinik.
Incorrect order—sedang precedes the predicate it marks.
✅ Saya sedang menunggu di depan klinik.
I am waiting in front of the clinic.
Key Takeaways
- Sedang highlights the internal, ongoing phase of a dynamic event; it does not create a tense.
- It precedes an unchanged predicate and remains separate from attached verb affixes.
- Stable states such as tahu, berasal dari, and berusia normally resist the progressive.
- Context can make sedang optional, even where English requires be + -ing.
- Sedang is neutral/standard; colloquial lagi and formal or focused tengah have different register profiles.
