sebelum, setelah, sesudah, and sejak

Sebelum places something before a reference point, setelah and sesudah place it after one, and sejak marks a starting boundary from which a situation is evaluated. Each can be followed by a compact noun phrase or, in its core conjunction use, by a clause. Indonesian needs no tense change after any of them: the linker itself supplies the ordering relation.

This page concentrates on nominal and clausal complements, shared and different subjects, and the role of aspect. Broader temporal chains are covered in Temporal Clause Architecture.

The timeline encoded by the linker

LinkerBoundary relationTypical register
sebelummain event earlier than reference eventneutral
setelahmain event later than reference eventneutral, common in edited prose
sesudahmain event later than reference eventneutral, common in speech
sejakreference event establishes a starting boundaryneutral

Sebelum rapat dimulai, semua peserta mematikan nada dering ponsel.

Before the meeting began, all participants silenced their phones.

Setelah rapat selesai, notulen dikirim kepada seluruh peserta.

After the meeting ended, the minutes were sent to all participants.

Sesudah makan siang, kami melanjutkan pembahasan di ruang kecil.

After lunch, we continued the discussion in the small room.

Sejak rapat itu, tim kami mengirim laporan kemajuan setiap Jumat.

Since that meeting, our team has sent a progress report every Friday.

The verb forms do not reveal “began,” “had ended,” or “has sent.” The linkers and time expressions do that work.

💡
Indonesian temporal linkers are miniature timelines. Once sebelum, setelah, or sejak has established the boundary, do not invent English-style tense morphology on the verb.

sebelum: earlier than the reference point

Sebelum means “before” (neutral). With a clause, it orders one event before another.

Saya memeriksa tekanan ban sebelum keluarga kami berangkat ke luar kota.

I checked the tire pressure before our family left town.

Sebelum kamu menandatangani kontrak, bacalah bagian tentang biaya pembatalan.

Before you sign the contract, read the section about cancellation fees.

Toko itu sudah tutup sebelum kami tiba di stasiun.

The shop had already closed before we arrived at the station.

The final example uses sudah to make prior completion explicit. English requires “had closed” in many contexts; Indonesian can use the unchanged predicate tutup, with sudah optionally highlighting completion.

With a noun phrase, sebelum identifies a boundary without spelling out an event.

Mohon hadir sepuluh menit sebelum wawancara.

Please arrive ten minutes before the interview. (formal)

Kami membeli air minum sebelum perjalanan malam.

We bought drinking water before the overnight journey.

No extra Indonesian equivalent of English of or to is needed between sebelum and its complement.

setelah and sesudah: later than the reference point

Setelah and sesudah both mean “after.” Setelah is very common across neutral and edited prose; sesudah is equally grammatical and especially frequent in everyday sequences (neutral; often conversational). Their difference is mostly preference and style, not a difference resembling English past versus past perfect.

Setelah dokter menjelaskan hasil pemindaian, kami mengajukan beberapa pertanyaan.

After the doctor explained the scan results, we asked several questions.

Pesanan baru diproses setelah pembayaran diterima.

The order is processed only after payment is received. (formal)

Sesudah anak-anak tidur, kami menonton film di ruang tengah.

After the children went to sleep, we watched a film in the living room. (conversational)

Aku mampir ke apotek sesudah bertemu dokter gigi.

I stopped by the pharmacy after seeing the dentist. (conversational)

Because “after” already places its event earlier than the main event, sudah is often unnecessary inside the subordinate clause. It can appear when completedness itself is contrastive.

Setelah semua tamu sudah pulang, barulah kami membuka hadiah itu.

Only after all the guests had gone home did we open the gift.

Here sudah reinforces that every guest was gone, while barulah makes the main event wait for that completed condition. In an ordinary sequence, setelah semua tamu pulang is leaner.

sejak: a starting boundary, not simply “after”

Sejak means “since” or “from the time that” (neutral). It establishes a starting point and invites the listener to consider the interval from that point to some later reference time.

Sejak pindah ke Surabaya, Niko lebih sering naik angkutan umum.

Since moving to Surabaya, Niko has used public transport more often.

Saya belum bertemu Diah sejak ia mulai bekerja di luar negeri.

I have not seen Diah since she started working abroad.

Sejak jembatan baru dibuka, perjalanan ke pasar menjadi jauh lebih singkat.

Since the new bridge opened, the trip to the market has become much shorter.

Mereka tinggal di rumah itu sejak tahun 2018.

They have lived in that house since 2018.

The situation after the boundary may continue (tinggal), recur (lebih sering naik), or describe a resulting state (menjadi lebih singkat). Sejak does not itself mean that every event mentioned continues indefinitely.

Aspect markers help locate the state relative to the boundary:

Sejak pagi, teknisi masih memeriksa kabel di ruang server.

The technicians have still been checking the cables in the server room since morning.

Sejak pengumuman itu, kami belum menerima petunjuk tambahan.

Since that announcement, we have not received further instructions.

Masih highlights continuation; belum highlights nonoccurrence up to the reference time.

Noun phrase or clause?

All four linkers can be followed by compact nominal material when the missing event is conventional and clear.

Sebelum ujian, Farah belajar di perpustakaan setiap sore.

Before the exam, Farah studied at the library every afternoon.

Setelah makan malam, Ayah biasanya berjalan mengelilingi kompleks.

After dinner, Dad usually walks around the housing complex.

Sesudah liburan sekolah, jadwal bus kembali normal.

After the school holiday, the bus schedule returns to normal.

Sejak Senin, lift sebelah timur tidak berfungsi.

The east elevator has not been working since Monday.

A full clause names the event and its participants more precisely:

Setelah para teknisi menyelesaikan pemeriksaan, lift sebelah timur kembali digunakan.

After the technicians completed the inspection, the east elevator was put back into service.

English learners sometimes try to insert a preposition or infinitive marker before the Indonesian verb. None is needed: say sebelum pergi, not sebelum untuk pergi.

Shared subjects and different subjects

When both clauses have the same subject, Indonesian commonly omits the subordinate subject. The main clause supplies it.

Sebelum berangkat, Mira mengisi botol minumnya sampai penuh.

Before leaving, Mira filled her water bottle completely. (Mira leaves)

Setelah menyimpan berkas, Beni mematikan komputer kantor.

After saving the files, Beni turned off the office computer. (Beni saves)

If the subjects differ, state the subordinate subject.

Sebelum Mira berangkat, adiknya menyelipkan bekal ke dalam tasnya.

Before Mira left, her younger sibling slipped some food into her bag.

Setelah Beni menyimpan berkas, atasannya memeriksa salinan cadangan.

After Beni saved the files, his supervisor checked the backup copy.

The reduced clause is not an English infinitive. It is an Indonesian clause whose understood subject is controlled by context. If omission could attach the action to the wrong person, repeat the subject.

A timeline with both patterns

Sebelum membuka loket, Sari menghitung uang kembalian; setelah rekannya tiba, mereka melayani pelanggan bersama-sama.

Before opening the counter, Sari counted the change; after her colleague arrived, they served customers together. (shared subject, then different subject)

In sebelum membuka, Sari is understood as the one opening. In setelah rekannya tiba, the overt subject rekannya differs from the following mereka.

💡
Subject omission is economical only when reference stays obvious. With two plausible actors, name the subordinate subject instead of forcing the reader to guess.

Clause position and punctuation

An initial temporal clause is followed by a comma. A final integrated clause normally has no preceding comma.

Sesudah hujan reda, warga mulai membersihkan lumpur dari teras rumah.

After the rain subsided, residents began clearing mud from their porches.

Warga mulai membersihkan lumpur setelah air di gang surut.

Residents began clearing the mud after the water in the alley receded.

The spelling is solid: sebelum, setelah, sesudah, sejak. The prefix-like historical material is not separated in modern standard orthography.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding untuk before a temporal clause

❌ Sebelum untuk masuk, tunjukkan kartu identitasmu.

Incorrect — sebelum takes the verb directly; no untuk is needed.

✅ Sebelum memasuki ruang ujian, tunjukkan kartu identitas kepada pengawas.

Before entering the examination room, show your identity card to the supervisor.

2. Leaving a different subordinate subject implicit

❌ Setelah tiba, Rina menjemput adiknya di terminal.

Ambiguous if the intended meaning is that the younger sibling arrived.

✅ Setelah adiknya tiba, Rina menjemputnya di pintu keluar terminal.

After her younger sibling arrived, Rina met them at the terminal exit.

3. Treating sejak as a simple completed “after”

❌ Sejak makan siang, kami langsung kembali ke kantor.

Wrong relation for the intended one-time sequence — sejak opens an interval rather than simply meaning ‘after.’

✅ Sesudah makan siang, kami langsung kembali ke kantor untuk menerima tamu.

After lunch, we returned directly to the office to receive a guest.

4. Copying English tense backshift onto the verb

❌ Setelah dia sudah-datang-kemarin, rapat dimulai.

Incorrect — Indonesian does not build a pluperfect by altering datang.

✅ Setelah dia tiba kemarin pagi, rapat langsung dimulai.

After she arrived yesterday morning, the meeting began immediately.

5. Separating the linker spelling

❌ Se telah pertunjukan, penonton menemui para pemain.

Incorrect spelling — setelah is one word.

✅ Setelah pertunjukan berakhir, beberapa penonton menemui para pemain di lobi.

After the performance ended, several audience members met the performers in the lobby.

Key Takeaways

  • Sebelum means earlier than; setelah/sesudah mean later than; sejak opens an interval from a starting boundary.
  • Each linker can take a conventional noun phrase or a full clause.
  • Omit a shared subject when reference is clear; state a different subject explicitly.
  • Aspect words such as sudah, masih, and belum add viewpoint, but no tense backshift occurs.
  • Initial temporal clauses take a comma; final integrated clauses normally do not.
