Productive ke- does not build a verb or add an object. It builds a numeral expression whose position changes the internal organization of a noun phrase: laporan kedua selects rank two, while kedua laporan itu includes both members of a definite pair. The resulting noun phrase can then fill any argument position licensed by the clause.
This page focuses on syntax, competitors, lexical exceptions, and register. The formation page handles the morphological template and spelling; the meaning page explains why rank and exhaustive grouping form one network.
Argument structure belongs to the clause, not ke-
An ordinal or collective expression can appear as subject, object, complement, or nominal predicate. Ke- determines number structure inside that phrase but does not change the verb’s valency.
Kedua teknisi itu memeriksa sistem pendingin.
Both technicians inspected the cooling system.
Manajer memanggil kedua teknisi itu setelah rapat.
The manager called both technicians after the meeting.
Panitia memilih rancangan kedua untuk tahap uji coba.
The committee selected the second design for the trial stage.
Rina adalah anak ketiga dalam keluarganya.
Rina is the third child in her family.
In the first clause, kedua teknisi itu is the actor. In the second, it is the object. In neither case does kedua create or remove an argument; memeriksa and memanggil license their objects independently.
Word order controls ordinal and collective readings
The neutral structural contrast is:
| Pattern | Reading | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N + (yang) + ke-numeral | ordinal rank | calon (yang) ketiga |
| ke-numeral + definite N | complete numbered set | ketiga calon itu |
| cardinal + N | simple count | tiga calon |
Calon ketiga menjawab pertanyaan dengan tenang.
The third candidate answered the question calmly.
Ketiga calon itu menjawab pertanyaan dengan tenang.
All three candidates answered the question calmly.
Tiga calon menunggu di luar ruangan.
Three candidates are waiting outside the room.
The optional yang can make a long ordinal phrase easier to parse:
Peserta yang keseratus masuk ke aula tepat sebelum istirahat.
The hundredth participant entered the hall just before the break.
With familiar short forms, the version without yang is compact and natural: peserta keseratus. The choice does not change the ordinal position.
Definite totality versus an indefinite count
Collective ke- presupposes a specific complete set. Demonstratives, possessors, and prior discourse commonly supply that definiteness.
Kedua mobil itu sudah dijual.
Both of those cars have been sold.
Ketiga adik Budi masih tinggal bersama orang tua mereka.
All three of Budi's younger siblings still live with their parents.
Keseratus peserta pelatihan menerima bahan yang sama.
All one hundred participants in the training received the same materials.
If no complete set is intended, use a cardinal:
Dua mobil berhenti di depan rumah.
Two cars stopped in front of the house.
Seratus peserta mengikuti pelatihan daring minggu ini.
One hundred participants are attending online training this week.
English the two cars can mean merely “the two previously mentioned cars” and often overlaps with both cars. Indonesian kedua mobil itu explicitly emphasizes exhaustive inclusion. That force makes it poor for a new indefinite count.
Competing ways to group participants
Several neighboring constructions describe a numbered group from different perspectives.
Kedua pegawai itu bekerja dari rumah.
Both employees work from home.
Mereka berdua bekerja dari rumah.
The two of them work from home.
Keduanya bekerja dari rumah.
Both of them work from home.
Kedua + noun quantifies a definite noun phrase. Pronoun + berdua groups the people denoted by the pronoun. Keduanya resumes an already accessible pair without repeating the noun. In informal conversation, dua-duanya is frequent:
Dua-duanya lagi kerja dari rumah hari ini.
Both of them are working from home today. (informal)
These are competitors, not freely interchangeable pieces. Berdua is especially natural with human pronouns; collective kedua can quantify people or things.
Kedua pintu itu terkunci, tetapi kami berdua masih punya kunci cadangan.
Both doors are locked, but the two of us still have spare keys.
Ordinal rank versus labels and names
Indonesian often uses a bare cardinal after nouns whose number serves as a label: Bab 2, halaman 10, kamar 305, bus nomor 7. An ordinal instead presents sequential rank.
Penjelasan lengkap ada di Bab 2.
The full explanation is in Chapter 2.
Bab kedua membahas hasil penelitian lapangan.
The second chapter discusses the field-research results.
Silakan menunggu di kamar 305.
Please wait in room 305.
Kamar ketiga di koridor itu sedang direnovasi.
The third room in that corridor is being renovated.
English also distinguishes room 305 from the 305th room, but learners often overuse ke- simply because English spelling shows an ordinal ending. Ask whether the number names an item or ranks it.
First, second-best, and other lexical competition
The numeral-one slot is suppletive in ordinary rank expressions: pertama is normally “first,” while kesatu has narrower technical or enumerative uses (formal).
Ini pertama kalinya saya naik kereta malam.
This is my first time taking a night train.
For ranked adjective phrases, established ordering matters. Kota terbesar kedua means “the second-largest city”: the ordinal ranks within the scale supplied by terbesar.
Kota itu merupakan kota terbesar kedua di provinsi tersebut.
That city is the second-largest city in the province.
Do not coin kebesar kedua or kecepat kedua. Use the established superlative plus ordinal: terbesar kedua, tercepat kedua.
Formal and conversational choices in three root families
Word-based collective forms are common in edited prose; conversation often chooses a pronoun, repetition, or a number label.
Kedua rancangan tersebut memenuhi persyaratan teknis.
Both designs meet the technical requirements. (formal)
Dua-duanya sudah sesuai syarat.
Both of them already meet the requirements. (informal)
Ketiga calon akan menjalani pemeriksaan kesehatan.
All three candidates will undergo medical examinations. (formal)
Tiga-tiganya nanti diperiksa dokter.
All three will be examined by a doctor later. (informal)
Peserta keseratus memperoleh nomor antrean terakhir.
The hundredth participant received the final queue number. (formal)
Yang nomor seratus dapat nomor antrean terakhir.
Number one hundred got the last queue number. (informal)
The colloquial versions do not reflect a universal deletion of ke-. They use different constructions. In careful prose, spell a word-based form solid (keseratus) or use a hyphen with digits (ke-100).
Lexicalized ke-initial words have their own valency
Dictionary-listed forms such as ketua, kehendak, kekasih, and kepada cannot be interpreted from the productive numeral rule. Their modern categories determine their complements.
Ketua panitia menyampaikan perubahan jadwal kepada peserta.
The committee chair announced the schedule change to the participants.
Perubahan jadwal itu dilakukan atas kehendak warga setempat.
The schedule change was made at the request of local residents.
Ia memperkenalkan kekasihnya kepada keluarga.
He/She introduced his/her partner to the family.
Here ketua is a noun that can take panitia as a possessor-like specification; kehendak is a noun; kepada is a recipient preposition. Treating all three as freely compositional ke- formations predicts neither their meaning nor their syntax.
Productivity has a clear center
Attaching ke- to cardinal numerals is productive, including large numerals, but not every logically imaginable base accepts it. Use terakhir for “last,” berikutnya for “next,” and tercepat kedua for “second fastest”—not invented keakhir, keberikut, or kecepat.
Bus terakhir berangkat pukul sepuluh malam.
The last bus leaves at ten at night.
Pelari itu mencatat waktu tercepat kedua dalam babak final.
That runner recorded the second-fastest time in the final.
Common Mistakes
1. Using collective ke- for a new indefinite count
❌ Tadi malam ketiga tamu datang tanpa reservasi.
Wrong if these are simply three newly introduced guests — ketiga presents a complete definite set.
✅ Tadi malam tiga tamu datang tanpa reservasi.
Last night three guests arrived without reservations.
2. Reversing ordinal and collective order
❌ Ketiga pelamar akan diwawancarai lebih dahulu.
Wrong for ‘the third applicant’ — before the noun, ketiga means all three applicants.
✅ Pelamar ketiga akan diwawancarai lebih dahulu.
The third applicant will be interviewed first.
3. Leaving out the noun and -nya
❌ Saya membaca dua laporan itu; kedua perlu diperbaiki.
Incorrect anaphoric form — use keduanya when the noun is omitted.
✅ Saya membaca dua laporan itu; keduanya perlu diperbaiki.
I read the two reports; both need to be revised.
4. Treating an item label as ordinal rank
❌ Rapat akan diadakan di Ruang Ketiga Ratus Lima.
Wrong for the room label 305 — labels normally use a cardinal number.
✅ Rapat akan diadakan di Ruang 305.
The meeting will be held in Room 305.
5. Coining ke- outside the numeral system
❌ Dia menjadi pelari kecepat kedua dalam lomba itu.
Incorrect invented derivative — Indonesian uses a superlative plus an ordinal.
✅ Dia menjadi pelari tercepat kedua dalam lomba itu.
He/She was the second-fastest runner in that race.
Key Takeaways
- Ke- changes noun-phrase number structure, not verbal valency.
- Use noun + ordinal for rank, collective + definite noun for a complete set, and a bare cardinal for simple count.
- Choose keduanya, mereka berdua, or informal dua-duanya according to phrase structure and register.
- Number labels such as Bab 2 are not automatically ordinals.
- Keep productive numeral formation separate from lexical words such as ketua and kepada.
