The ber- schema is productive enough to organize large families, but each established word still has its own valency and register. Berjalan normally builds an actor-only movement clause, bekerja names an activity, belajar may take a subject-matter complement, and bersepeda incorporates the vehicle concept into the activity. None is simply “active ber- plus any object you choose.”
This page covers argument structure, competition with neighboring affixes, lexical exceptions, and formal–conversational distribution. The meaning network and the formation of ber-, be-, and bel- are treated on the other two pages in this series.
The default: an activity centered on the subject
Many ber- verbs form active intransitive clauses. Their subject performs or participates in the activity, while time, place, direction, and manner appear as adjuncts.
Para peserta berjalan menuju aula utama.
The participants walked toward the main hall.
Kakak saya bekerja di perusahaan logistik.
My older sibling works at a logistics company.
Murid-murid belajar dengan tekun menjelang ujian.
The pupils study diligently as the examination approaches.
Kami bersepeda di jalur khusus setiap akhir pekan.
We cycle in the dedicated lane every weekend.
These clauses are active in the ordinary semantic sense that the subject is engaged in the event. Ber- is not, however, the active-voice partner of passive di- in the same way as many meN- verbs. Most ber- predicates do not project an affected direct object and therefore do not have a corresponding ordinary passive.
Objects versus complements
Some intransitive ber- verbs license a following noun that completes their lexical meaning. Belajar bahasa Indonesia and bermain sepak bola look transitive in English, but the following noun behaves as a complement, not a normal object.
Mereka belajar bahasa Indonesia selama enam bulan.
They studied Indonesian for six months.
Anak-anak bermain sepak bola di lapangan belakang.
The children played soccer on the back field.
Tangki ini berisi air hujan.
This tank contains rainwater.
The diagnostic is passivization. The complement after belajar cannot simply become the subject of a di- passive. To build a transitive family, Indonesian uses mempelajari.
Para peserta mempelajari aturan keselamatan sebelum praktik.
The participants studied the safety rules before the practical session.
Aturan keselamatan dipelajari para peserta sebelum praktik.
The safety rules were studied by the participants before the practical session.
By contrast, there is no neutral passive bahasa Indonesia dibelajar mereka. The noun after belajar supplies the field learned, but it is not an affected object in the voice system.
Some clothing and possession forms also take a specification:
Anak itu berpakaian seragam putih dan biru.
That child is dressed in a white-and-blue uniform.
Bangunan baru itu bertingkat tiga.
That new building has three stories.
Seragam putih dan biru specifies the clothing, and tiga specifies the number of stories. Their position after the predicate does not automatically make them objects.
Competition with neighboring verb families
Changing the derivation often changes the event structure, not merely the level of formality.
Bekerja versus mengerjakan
Bekerja means engage in work; mengerjakan directs an action toward a task or object.
Saya bekerja sampai pukul lima.
I work until five o’clock.
Saya mengerjakan laporan bulanan sampai pukul lima.
I worked on the monthly report until five o’clock.
The report is the affected task of mengerjakan, not a direct object of bekerja.
Berjalan versus menjalankan
Berjalan means walk, move, run, or proceed. Menjalankan means cause something to run, operate it, or carry it out.
Program pelatihan berjalan sesuai jadwal.
The training program is proceeding according to schedule.
Tim baru akan menjalankan program pelatihan itu mulai Senin.
The new team will run that training program starting Monday.
This is not a simple English intransitive/transitive alternation in every context: menjalankan has developed conventional senses such as operating a program or carrying out a duty.
Belajar versus mempelajari and mengajar
Belajar profiles the learner’s activity. Mempelajari takes what is studied as an object, while mengajar profiles a teacher’s activity.
Dewi belajar bahasa Korea melalui kelas daring.
Dewi studies Korean through an online class.
Dewi mempelajari perubahan bunyi dalam bahasa Korea.
Dewi studies sound changes in Korean.
Dewi mengajar bahasa Korea di pusat bahasa.
Dewi teaches Korean at a language center.
Bersepeda versus mengendarai sepeda
Bersepeda packages the bicycle as the means or activity. Mengendarai sepeda explicitly takes the bicycle as the vehicle being ridden.
Kami bersepeda ke pantai sebelum matahari terbit.
We cycled to the beach before sunrise.
Anak itu sudah bisa mengendarai sepeda tanpa roda bantu.
That child can already ride a bicycle without training wheels.
The two can describe the same real-world trip, but their grammar profiles different participants.
Self-directed forms and valency changes
With grooming and bodily actions, ber- often centers the action on the subject. A neighboring meN- form can introduce a separate affected participant.
Budi bercukur sebelum berangkat kerja.
Budi shaved before leaving for work.
Budi mencukur kumisnya sebelum berangkat kerja.
Budi shaved his mustache before leaving for work.
Petugas mencukur bulu anjing itu sebelum operasi.
The attendant shaved the dog’s fur before the operation.
The object is omitted from bercukur because the event is conventionally self-directed. With mencukur, the affected hair, mustache, person, or animal can be explicit.
Noun phrases built around ber- clauses
An established ber- predicate can appear inside a relative clause or compact descriptive phrase. Its valency remains the same.
Pegawai yang bekerja dari rumah tetap harus mengikuti rapat pagi.
Employees who work from home still have to attend the morning meeting.
Siswa yang belajar di perpustakaan diminta menjaga ketenangan.
Students studying in the library are asked to remain quiet.
Pria berkacamata yang berdiri dekat pintu itu kepala bagian kami.
The man with glasses standing near the door is our department head.
The compact pria berkacamata describes a man through a “wearing/having glasses” predicate. It does not license kacamata as a following object.
Lexicalization: the base is not the whole story
Dictionary-listed ber- words may have meanings and complement patterns that are no longer fully compositional. Berangkat means “depart,” not “perform lifting”; berhasil means “succeed”; berarti means “mean/signify”; bertemu commonly combines with dengan when the other participant is explicit.
Kereta kami berangkat tepat waktu.
Our train departed on time.
Percobaan pertama belum berhasil.
The first attempt has not succeeded yet.
Apa arti tanda ini? Tanda ini berarti dilarang masuk.
What does this sign mean? This sign means no entry.
Saya bertemu dengan mantan guru saya di stasiun.
I met my former teacher at the station.
The base helps organize memory, but it does not authorize a learner to predict every argument or translation. Learn the word together with its common complements.
Productive possibilities and blocked coinages
Modern Indonesian can extend ber-, especially when a community recognizes the noun as equipment, identity, or activity. That flexibility does not make every logically imaginable form idiomatic.
Semua pengunjung wajib bermasker di ruang pemeriksaan.
All visitors must wear masks in the examination room.
Bermasker is established in contemporary public language. By contrast, an invented form such as berprinter will not automatically mean “print with a printer.” Use an established verb or phrase unless actual usage supports the derivative.
Saya mencetak dokumen itu dengan printer kantor.
I printed that document using the office printer.
There is no logical shortcut here: dictionaries, corpora, and native usage determine which apparently possible forms have become conventional.
Formal and conversational distribution
Standard writing normally retains ber- forms. Casual conversation can use a bare root or another everyday phrase with some families, but not uniformly.
Peserta berjalan menuju ruang pemeriksaan setelah nomor antreannya dipanggil.
Participants proceed to the examination room after their queue number is called. (formal)
Kita jalan ke ruang periksa sekarang, ya.
Let’s walk over to the examination room now, okay? (informal)
Pegawai diperbolehkan bekerja dari rumah dua hari setiap minggu.
Employees are permitted to work from home two days each week. (formal)
Besok aku kerja dari rumah.
Tomorrow I’m working from home. (informal)
Mahasiswa diharapkan belajar secara mandiri sebelum seminar.
Students are expected to study independently before the seminar. (formal)
Aku lagi belajar sendiri.
I’m studying by myself right now. (informal)
Warga dianjurkan bersepeda ke kantor untuk mengurangi polusi.
Residents are encouraged to cycle to work to reduce pollution. (formal)
Kalau dekat, naik sepeda saja ke kantor.
If it’s nearby, just ride a bike to work. (informal)
Belajar remains intact in conversation because bare ajar means “teach” as a root concept, not casual “study.” Register reduction is therefore lexical, not a general permission to delete ber-.
Orthography
Write actual words solid: berjalan, bekerja, belajar, bersepeda. Use ber- with a hyphen only as the abstract label in linguistic explanation. Surface bekerja and belajar do not restore the absent r. See the affix spelling guide for EYD V attachment.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding an affected object directly after bekerja
❌ Saya bekerja laporan keuangan setiap Jumat.
Incorrect valency — bekerja names the work activity but does not take laporan as an affected object.
✅ Saya mengerjakan laporan keuangan setiap Jumat.
I work on the financial report every Friday.
2. Passivizing a belajar complement
❌ Bahasa Jepang dibelajar para siswa selama dua tahun.
Incorrect — the complement of belajar does not form a di- passive.
✅ Bahasa Jepang dipelajari para siswa selama dua tahun.
Japanese is studied by the students for two years.
3. Coining a derivative without established support
❌ Saya berprinter laporan ini di kantor.
Incorrect invented usage — berprinter is not the ordinary verb for printing a report.
✅ Saya mencetak laporan ini dengan printer kantor.
I printed this report using the office printer.
4. Interpreting a lexicalized word directly from its root
❌ Dia berangkat koper itu ke lantai dua.
Incorrect — berangkat means depart, not lift an object.
✅ Dia mengangkat koper itu ke lantai dua.
He/She carried the suitcase up to the second floor.
5. Dropping ber- in formal prose
❌ Seluruh pegawai kerja dari rumah pada hari Jumat.
Incorrect in a formal policy statement — casual kerja replaces standard bekerja.
✅ Seluruh pegawai bekerja dari rumah pada hari Jumat.
All employees work from home on Fridays. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- Most ber- predicates center an activity or characteristic on the subject rather than projecting an affected object.
- A following noun can be a lexical complement without becoming passivizable: belajar bahasa Indonesia.
- Neighboring forms change valency and meaning: bekerja/mengerjakan, belajar/mempelajari, bersepeda/mengendarai sepeda.
- Learn lexicalized words with their complements, and verify new-looking derivatives in real usage.
- Casual root verbs such as jalan and kerja do not license prefix deletion from every family or from formal prose.
