Transitivity and Object Tests

Transitivity concerns how a predicate organizes its participants. A transitive predicate selects a direct object; an intransitive predicate does not. Indonesian word order provides a first clue, but position alone is unreliable because locations, destinations, instruments, and times can all follow a verb.

Stronger evidence comes from a bundle of tests: whether a preposition is present, whether the participant can become the subject or pivot of a passive or object-voice clause, and how voice morphology treats it. Semantic affectedness helps explain typical objects, but it is not a mechanical rule. See voice-system arguments for the full participant-order comparison.

Intransitive, optional-object, and transitive frames

An intransitive predicate has one central participant. It may still be followed by an adjunct or prepositional complement.

Adik saya tidur nyenyak setelah perjalanan panjang.

My younger sibling slept soundly after the long journey.

Para tamu tinggal di rumah keluarga angkat selama tiga malam.

The guests stay with a host family for three nights.

Kereta terakhir tiba di peron empat pukul sebelas.

The last train arrives at platform four at eleven.

The required pattern tinggal di rumah contains locative di rumah, not a direct object. Removing the location leaves para tamu tinggal as a complete clause in a suitable context.

Some roots allow an object but do not require one in every use. Makan is a clear example:

Raka sudah makan sebelum berangkat ke kantor.

Raka has eaten before leaving for the office.

Raka makan nasi pecel di warung dekat kantor.

Raka eats rice with pecel at the food stall near the office.

The first makan has no expressed food participant. The second names nasi pecel directly, with no preposition. The verb is often called ambitransitive because its surface frame can be intransitive or transitive.

The actor-voice derivative memakan makes transitivity more explicit and often suits careful description, quantified consumption, or an affected object.

Anak itu memakan nasi yang tersisa di piring kakaknya.

The child ate the rice left on their older sibling's plate.

Kebakaran tersebut memakan tiga bangunan di kawasan pasar.

The fire consumed three buildings in the market district.

Memakan is not simply a more grammatical form of every everyday makan. The bare root remains standard in common combinations such as makan nasi and in object voice.

The preposition test

A direct object normally follows its actor-voice verb without a preposition. A noun inside di, ke, dari, dengan, kepada, or another prepositional phrase is not the direct object of that verb.

Compare the required location–object contrast:

Kami tinggal di rumah nenek selama liburan sekolah.

We stay at Grandmother's house during the school holiday.

Kami mengunjungi rumah nenek pada hari pertama liburan.

We visit Grandmother's house on the first day of the holiday.

In tinggal di rumah, rumah is the complement of di. In mengunjungi rumah, rumah is the direct object of mengunjungi.

Dina berbicara dengan manajer setelah rapat.

Dina spoke with the manager after the meeting.

Dina menghubungi manajer setelah rapat.

Dina contacted the manager after the meeting.

The same person can be expressed through a dengan phrase with one predicate and as a direct object with another. Lexical valency, not real-world role alone, decides the syntax.

💡
A following noun is not automatically an object. First ask whether a preposition heads its phrase; then test whether the whole participant can be promoted by voice.

Voice alternation as an object diagnostic

A direct object in actor voice can normally become the initial patient subject or pivot in a di- passive or pronominal object-voice clause.

Petugas mengunjungi rumah itu setiap awal bulan.

The officer visits that house at the beginning of every month.

Rumah itu dikunjungi petugas setiap awal bulan.

That house is visited by the officer at the beginning of every month.

Rumah itu sudah kami kunjungi dua kali tahun ini.

We have visited that house twice this year.

This alternation supports the analysis of rumah itu as the object of mengunjungi. The pronominal agent kami precedes the bare kunjungi in object voice.

A prepositional location does not undergo the same promotion while keeping the original predicate:

Mereka tinggal di apartemen dekat kampus.

They live in an apartment near campus.

Di apartemen dekat kampus, mereka tinggal bersama dua teman.

In an apartment near campus, they live with two friends. (fronted location)

Fronting di apartemen does not make it an object or passive subject. The preposition remains, and tinggal remains intransitive.

No single passive test is perfect: lexical restrictions, information structure, and register can make a theoretically possible passive awkward. Use converging evidence rather than forcing every verb into an invented pair.

meN- and bare forms do not decide transitivity alone

Many transitive actor-voice verbs carry meN-:

Sinta membaca laporan keuangan di kereta.

Sinta reads the financial report on the train.

Teknisi memperbaiki mesin pencetak sore ini.

The technician is repairing the printer this afternoon.

But some meN- verbs are intransitive:

Bayi tetangga menangis sejak subuh.

The neighbor's baby has been crying since dawn.

Para pendaki menepi ketika hujan turun deras.

The hikers moved to the side when heavy rain began.

Conversely, bare roots can take objects in everyday actor-first clauses (informal), imperatives, and object voice.

Aku baca pesannya nanti malam.

I'll read the message tonight. (informal)

Baca petunjuk keselamatan sebelum menyalakan mesin.

Read the safety instructions before starting the machine.

Petunjuk itu harus kamu baca sebelum pelatihan.

You must read those instructions before the training.

The construction and register determine the form. Do not reduce transitivity to “prefixed means transitive, bare means intransitive.”

Definiteness and object position

Direct objects may be indefinite or definite.

Laras membeli buku bekas di pasar akhir pekan.

Laras bought a secondhand book at the weekend market.

Laras membeli buku bekas itu setelah menawar harganya.

Laras bought that secondhand book after bargaining over its price.

Both buku bekas and buku bekas itu are direct objects. Definiteness matters more for information structure: a definite, topical patient readily appears first in passive or object voice.

Buku bekas itu dibeli Laras untuk koleksi pribadinya.

That secondhand book was bought by Laras for her personal collection.

Buku bekas itu sudah saya baca sampai selesai dalam perjalanan pulang.

I read that secondhand book all the way through on the journey home.

The second uses first-person object voice. Actor voice is also possible when the reader remains the discourse topic.

Bare indefinite nouns may form tight lexical combinations—makan nasi, minum kopi, baca koran—but tightness does not automatically remove object status. Voice and discourse provide the stronger analysis.

Affectedness helps, but does not define objects

Objects often undergo change, movement, consumption, creation, or perception.

Pekerja membongkar dinding lama di bagian belakang.

The workers dismantled the old wall at the back.

Koki memotong sayuran menjadi irisan tipis.

The cook cut the vegetables into thin slices.

These patients are visibly affected. Other legitimate objects change little or not at all:

Kami melihat mercusuar dari atas kapal.

We saw the lighthouse from the ship.

Saya mengenal pemilik toko itu sejak kecil.

I have known that shop owner since childhood.

Banyak warga menyukai taman baru tersebut.

Many residents like the new park.

Perceived, known, and liked participants behave as direct objects despite low physical affectedness. Semantic prototypes explain tendencies; syntax identifies the actual frame.

Objects versus adjuncts

Adjuncts add optional time, place, manner, reason, or instrument information. Several can follow a transitive object.

Maya membuka paket itu dengan gunting di dapur tadi pagi.

Maya opened the package with scissors in the kitchen this morning.

The object is paket itu. Dengan gunting is an instrument, di dapur a location, and tadi pagi a time adjunct. Only the object becomes the patient in the corresponding passive:

Paket itu dibuka Maya dengan gunting di dapur tadi pagi.

The package was opened by Maya with scissors in the kitchen this morning.

Fronting an adjunct changes information order, not its grammatical role.

Dengan gunting kecil, Maya membuka segel plastik itu.

With small scissors, Maya opened the plastic seal.

Common Mistakes

Calling every postverbal noun an object

❌ Dalam ‘Kami tinggal di rumah itu’, rumah itu adalah objek langsung tinggal.

Incorrect analysis—rumah itu is inside the prepositional phrase di rumah itu.

✅ Dalam ‘Kami mengunjungi rumah itu’, rumah itu adalah objek langsung mengunjungi.

In Kami mengunjungi rumah itu, rumah itu is the direct object of mengunjungi.

Preposition behavior distinguishes the two frames.

Removing a required destination preposition

❌ Para tamu pergi stasiun sesudah sarapan.

Incorrect in Standard Indonesian—the destination requires ke.

✅ Para tamu pergi ke stasiun sesudah sarapan.

The guests went to the station after breakfast.

The postverbal destination does not become a direct object merely because English sometimes omits “to” with other verbs.

Trying to passivize a bare locative noun

❌ Rumah itu ditinggal oleh kami selama liburan, dengan maksud ‘we stayed at that house’.

Incorrect for the intended meaning—ditinggal means ‘was left,’ not ‘was stayed at.’

✅ Kami tinggal di rumah itu selama liburan sekolah.

We stayed at that house during the school holiday.

Changing tinggal di to ditinggal creates a different transitive sense.

Assuming every meN- verb takes an object

❌ Bayi itu menangis air mata sepanjang malam.

Incorrect—menangis is not made transitive by its meN- shape.

✅ Bayi itu menangis sepanjang malam karena demam.

The baby cried all night because of a fever.

Morphological shape alone does not determine valency.

Rejecting an object because it is not physically affected

❌ Mercusuar bukan objek dalam ‘Kami melihat mercusuar’ karena tidak berubah.

Incorrect analysis—physical change is not required for objecthood.

✅ Mercusuar itu terlihat dari kapal dan sudah kami lihat sejak pagi.

The lighthouse is visible from the ship, and we have seen it since morning.

Perception verbs can select direct objects even when the referent remains unchanged.

Key Takeaways

  • A postverbal position is only a clue; preposition and voice behavior are stronger object diagnostics.
  • Makan can occur without an object or with one; memakan explicitly presents a transitive frame.
  • Tinggal di rumah contains a locative phrase, while mengunjungi rumah contains a direct object.
  • meN- does not guarantee transitivity, and a bare form does not guarantee intransitivity.
  • Affectedness is prototypical, not definitional: objects of seeing, knowing, and liking need not change.
