Predicate Categories and Their Syntax

The predicate is what a clause asserts about its subject. Indonesian predicates can be headed by a verb, noun, adjective, numeral expression, or prepositional phrase. Because most nonverbal predicates need no copula, English be is a poor guide to their Indonesian category. The constituency guide explains how the full predicate forms a phrase around that head.

Category matters syntactically. Different predicates select different negators and modifiers: nouns favor bukan, adjectives accept degree words such as sangat, verbs accept aspect markers such as sedang, and prepositional predicates keep their preposition. These behaviors reveal structure even when no linking word appears.

One subject, five predicate types

The same subject can combine with predicates from five categories. Compare kelompok itu “that group” in the following clauses:

Kelompok itu sedang berlatih untuk pertandingan akhir pekan.

That group is training for the weekend match. (verbal predicate)

Kelompok itu juara bertahan turnamen antarkampus.

That group is the defending champion of the inter-university tournament. (nominal predicate)

Kelompok itu sangat kompak saat bekerja di lapangan.

That group is very cohesive when working in the field. (adjectival predicate)

Kelompok itu dua belas orang, termasuk dua pelatih.

That group consists of twelve people, including two coaches. (numeral predicate)

Kelompok itu dari Surabaya, bukan dari Malang.

That group is from Surabaya, not Malang. (prepositional predicate)

English translates four of these with a form of be, but the Indonesian heads remain a noun (juara), adjective (kompak), numeral phrase (dua belas orang), and prepositional phrase (dari Surabaya). The verbal clause uses berlatih. Translation does not erase those distinctions.

💡
Find the Indonesian head first. Ask what kind of expression makes the assertion, then check which negator and modifiers it accepts. Do not begin by counting forms of English “be.”

Verbal predicates

A verbal predicate presents an event, process, activity, or verbal state. It can combine with aspect and modal markers such as sedang, sudah, belum, and akan.

Petugas sedang memeriksa kamera keamanan di lobi.

The officer is checking the security camera in the lobby.

Kami belum menerima jadwal pelatihan yang baru.

We have not yet received the new training schedule.

Raka akan tinggal di asrama selama satu semester.

Raka will live in the dormitory for one semester.

Neutral verbal negation uses tidak:

Petugas tidak memeriksa kamera di ruang belakang hari ini.

The officer is not checking the camera in the back room today.

The internal shape of the verb can indicate voice and derivation, but a meN- prefix does not by itself prove transitivity: menangis “cry” is intransitive, while bare makan may take an object. Category and argument structure are related but separate questions.

Nominal predicates

A nominal predicate classifies or identifies the subject. Neutral everyday Indonesian usually places it directly after the subject with no copula.

Nadia kepala laboratorium yang baru.

Nadia is the new head of the laboratory.

Bangunan di seberang taman itu perpustakaan kota.

The building across from the park is the city library.

Mereka relawan dari tiga organisasi lingkungan.

They are volunteers from three environmental organizations.

Use bukan to reject nominal identity or classification:

Nadia bukan kepala administrasi, melainkan kepala laboratorium.

Nadia is not the head of administration but the head of the laboratory.

Adalah and ialah are optional (formal) copular links in definitions, explicit equations, and structurally heavy subject–predicate relations. They occur especially with nominal predicates, but formal descriptions of a task or goal can also link to an activity clause.

Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah pemetaan sumber air bersih.

The main goal of this research is the mapping of clean-water sources. (formal/academic)

Tugas seorang moderator ialah menjaga diskusi tetap terarah.

A moderator's task is to keep the discussion focused. (formal)

The copula itself does not determine the category of what follows it. Pemetaan sumber air bersih is nominal, whereas menjaga diskusi tetap terarah remains a verbal activity description used to define the task.

Adjectival predicates

An adjective can make a complete assertion without adalah. Degree behavior is a strong diagnostic: adjectives accept sangat “very,” agak “somewhat,” terlalu “too,” lebih “more,” or post-adjectival sekali “very.”

Jalur menuju desa itu sangat sempit pada musim hujan.

The route to that village is very narrow during the rainy season.

Penjelasan di halaman terakhir agak membingungkan.

The explanation on the final page is somewhat confusing.

Koper sebesar ini terlalu berat untuk dibawa sendiri.

A suitcase this size is too heavy to carry alone.

Pemandangan dari jembatan baru itu indah sekali.

The view from the new bridge is very beautiful.

Neutral adjective negation uses tidak:

Jalur sebelah timur tidak aman setelah gelap.

The eastern route is not safe after dark.

Contrastive bukan can reject an adjective as one alternative—bukan mahal, tetapi langka “not expensive but rare”—but this does not replace ordinary tidak mahal.

Numeral predicates

A numeral expression can state a count, amount, age, measurement, or price. It is often easiest to recognize when the subject names a set or quantity-bearing entity.

Peserta lokakarya itu tiga puluh dua orang.

The workshop participants number thirty-two people.

Usia gedung utama ini hampir seratus tahun.

The main building is almost one hundred years old.

Harga tiket pulang-pergi itu enam ratus ribu rupiah.

The round-trip ticket costs six hundred thousand rupiah.

Jarak dari terminal ke penginapan sekitar dua kilometer.

The distance from the terminal to the guesthouse is about two kilometers.

Numeral predicates accept quantity modifiers such as hanya, hampir, sekitar, and lebih dari, not adjective degree sangat.

Anggota tim inti hanya tujuh orang.

The core team has only seven members.

When correcting a proposed number, bukan is natural because it rejects one numerical identification in favor of another:

Pesertanya bukan tiga puluh orang, melainkan tiga puluh dua.

There are not thirty participants but thirty-two.

For a scalar limit, tidak can occur with an added expression: tidak sampai tiga puluh orang “not as many as thirty people.” The negator targets sampai, not a plain numeral category by itself.

Prepositional predicates

A prepositional phrase can directly locate or relate the subject. Common heads include di, dari, untuk, and dengan.

Kunci ruang arsip di laci paling bawah.

The archive-room key is in the bottom drawer.

Pembicara berikutnya dari Universitas Hasanuddin.

The next speaker is from Hasanuddin University.

Paket kecil di meja depan itu untuk Bu Ratna.

The small package on the front desk is for Ms. Ratna.

Dimas bersama tim lapangan sejak pagi.

Dimas has been with the field team since morning.

Neutral negation uses tidak before the prepositional predicate:

Kunci cadangannya tidak di laci biasa.

The spare key is not in the usual drawer.

Surat ini tidak untuk pelanggan umum.

This letter is not for general customers.

Do not remove the preposition when negating or fronting the phrase. Di remains separate in locative di laci.

The verb berada can make location explicit in (formal) descriptions, but it creates a verbal predicate containing a locative complement rather than serving as an empty equivalent of English be.

Pusat informasi berada di sebelah pintu keberangkatan.

The information center is located beside the departure entrance. (formal)

Modification reveals category

The following comparison summarizes useful diagnostics:

Predicate headCharacteristic modifierNeutral negationCopula
verbsedang, sudah, akantidak / belumnone
noundeterminers/classifying materialbukanzero; adalah/ialah formal
adjectivesangat, agak, terlalu, sekalitidaknone in neutral clauses
numeralhanya, hampir, sekitarbukan in correctionusually zero
prepositional phrasematerial inside the PPtidaknone

No single test is absolute. Lexical meaning and contrast can license unusual combinations. The value of the diagnostics lies in their convergence.

💡
Zero copula does not erase category. Dia dokter, dia sehat, and dia di klinik have different predicates even though all three lack a linking verb.

Common Mistakes

Using English be to label every predicate verbal

❌ Dalam kalimat ‘Mira sangat teliti’, teliti adalah verba karena bahasa Inggris memakai is.

Incorrect analysis—the English copula does not make Indonesian teliti a verb.

✅ Dalam kalimat ‘Mira sangat teliti’, teliti adalah predikat adjektival.

In Mira sangat teliti, teliti is an adjectival predicate.

The degree word sangat and negation with tidak support the adjectival analysis.

Adding adalah before an adjective

❌ Gudang dokumennya adalah panas dan pengap.

Incorrect neutral syntax—ordinary adjective predicates need no adalah.

✅ Gudang dokumennya panas dan pengap.

The document storeroom is hot and stuffy.

Reserve adalah mainly for formal nominal equations.

Using tidak for a plain nominal identity

❌ Pak Anton tidak ketua panitia tahun ini.

Incorrect neutral nominal negation—use bukan.

✅ Pak Anton bukan ketua panitia tahun ini.

Mr. Anton is not the committee chair this year.

Nominal category, not the English word not, determines the negator.

Applying adjective degree sangat to a numeral

❌ Peserta rapat itu sangat dua puluh orang.

Incorrect—plain numeral predicates do not take adjective degree sangat.

✅ Peserta rapat itu sekitar dua puluh orang.

There are about twenty meeting participants.

Use numeral-compatible modifiers such as sekitar, hampir, or hanya.

Dropping the preposition from a locative predicate

❌ Dokumennya laci paling atas sejak kemarin.

Incorrect—the location requires prepositional di.

✅ Dokumennya di laci paling atas sejak kemarin.

The document has been in the top drawer since yesterday.

The preposition is the head that makes this a locative predicate.

Key Takeaways

  • Indonesian permits verbal, nominal, adjectival, numeral, and prepositional predicates.
  • Negation and modification reveal category even when there is no copula.
  • Bukan normally negates nominal identity; tidak negates verbal, adjectival, and prepositional predicates.
  • Adalah and ialah are formal nominal links, not universal translations of English be.
  • Identify the Indonesian predicate head before analyzing its English translation.
