Ditransitives and Three-Participant Events

A three-participant event typically involves an actor, something transferred or created, and a recipient, beneficiary, or goal. Indonesian does not use one universal “double-object” template. The verb's derivation helps decide which non-actor participant is the core object and therefore which participant can be promoted most directly in passive voice.

This is the organizing contrast: mengirimkan paket kepada Rina selects the theme paket, while mengirimi Rina paket selects the recipient Rina. English may translate both as “send Rina a package,” but the Indonesian syntax is different. The broader kan versus i argument guide compares additional lexical families.

Five important roles

Three-participant clauses distinguish roles that English often bundles together:

RoleQuestionTypical example
actorWho initiates the event?Raka sends
themeWhat moves, is given, or is created?paket
recipientWho receives the theme?Rina
beneficiaryFor whose benefit is the event done?untuk Ibu
goalWhere is the theme directed?ke kantor pusat

A human participant may be both recipient and beneficiary, but the roles are not identical. A package can be sent kepada Rina for someone else's benefit, and a meal can be bought untuk Rina without Rina physically receiving it yet.

Raka sends a package of medicine to Rina for her mother.

Here paket obat is theme, Rina is recipient, and ibunya is beneficiary.

Memberi: recipient before theme

Memberi commonly takes a recipient as its first postverbal object-like participant, followed by the theme.

Guru memberi setiap kelompok waktu tambahan sepuluh menit.

The teacher gives each group an extra ten minutes.

Petugas memberi saya nomor antrean yang baru.

The officer gave me a new queue number.

Kami memberi para relawan makan siang dan air minum.

We gave the volunteers lunch and drinking water.

The recipient can become the passive subject:

Setiap kelompok diberi waktu tambahan sepuluh menit oleh guru.

Each group was given an extra ten minutes by the teacher.

Saya diberi nomor antrean baru oleh petugas informasi.

I was given a new queue number by the information officer.

To foreground the theme instead, use memberikan with the recipient expressed by kepada or contextually as another phrase.

Guru memberikan waktu tambahan kepada setiap kelompok.

The teacher gives extra time to each group.

Waktu tambahan diberikan kepada setiap kelompok sebelum ujian dimulai.

Extra time was given to each group before the examination began.

The alternation is not mere stylistic rearrangement: it changes which participant is structurally privileged.

💡
Use passive promotion as a diagnostic. Kelompok itu diberi waktu promotes the recipient; waktu itu diberikan kepada kelompok promotes the theme.

Mengirimkan: theme as object, recipient as goal

With mengirimkan, the transferred theme normally follows the verb directly. A human recipient is introduced by kepada in careful usage; a destination often uses ke.

Sari mengirimkan dokumen asli kepada kepala bagian hukum.

Sari sends the original document to the head of the legal department.

Panitia mengirimkan sertifikat digital kepada semua peserta.

The committee sends digital certificates to all participants.

Gudang pusat mengirimkan dua puluh kursi ke cabang Semarang.

The central warehouse sends twenty chairs to the Semarang branch.

The theme is the natural passive subject:

Dokumen asli itu dikirimkan Sari kepada kepala bagian hukum.

The original document was sent by Sari to the head of the legal department.

We have sent the digital certificates to all participants.

The second is pronominal object voice: the topical theme comes first, followed by kami and the bare kirimkan.

In everyday speech, kirim ke Rina is common (informal). Kepada Rina explicitly marks a human recipient and suits careful or formal prose.

Mengirimi: recipient as object

Mengirimi selects the recipient or target as its direct object. The theme follows as the remaining participant.

Sari mengirimi kepala bagian hukum salinan dokumen itu.

Sari sends the head of the legal department a copy of that document.

Panitia mengirimi setiap peserta sertifikat digital.

The committee sends each participant a digital certificate.

Dina rutin mengirimi neneknya foto anak-anak.

Dina regularly sends her grandmother photos of the children.

The recipient-oriented passive uses dikirimi:

Kepala bagian hukum dikirimi salinan dokumen oleh Sari.

The head of the legal department was sent a copy of the document by Sari.

Each participant has been sent a digital certificate by the committee.

I often send my grandmother back home photos from out of town.

The last uses a topical recipient followed by first-person object voice. A di- passive such as Neneknya sering dikirimi foto oleh Dina is the corresponding unambiguous third-person alternative.

Do not attach kepada to the selected recipient after mengirimi: the -i frame already promotes it as the direct target.

Membelikan: a beneficiary-oriented family

Membelikan often introduces someone for whose benefit an item is bought. That beneficiary can immediately follow the verb, with the purchased theme after it.

Dad bought my younger sibling a bicycle for going to school.

Rina membelikan ibunya obat di apotek dekat terminal.

Rina bought her mother medicine at the pharmacy near the terminal.

Kami membelikan tamu itu tiket bus menuju bandara.

We bought that guest a bus ticket to the airport.

The beneficiary can be passive subject:

Adik dibelikan sepeda oleh Ayah agar bisa pergi ke sekolah.

My younger sibling was bought a bicycle by Dad so they could go to school.

Her mother was bought medicine by Rina at the pharmacy near the terminal.

Indonesian can also put the theme directly after membelikan and express the beneficiary with untuk.

Dad bought that bicycle for my younger sibling after receiving his salary.

That bicycle was bought by Dad for my younger sibling at the shop near the school.

I have bought that bicycle for my younger sibling as a birthday present.

These are the two passive choices: beneficiary-oriented adik dibelikan sepeda and theme-oriented sepeda dibelikan untuk adik. The exact acceptability and preference can be lexical and discourse-sensitive; not every -kan verb freely offers both.

Two-object order is derivation-specific

Compare the families side by side:

Verb frameFirst postverbal participantOther participant
memberi Rina bukurecipienttheme
memberikan buku kepada Rinathemekepada recipient
mengirimkan buku kepada Rinathemekepada recipient
mengirimi Rina bukurecipienttheme
membelikan Rina bukubeneficiarytheme

English allows “send Rina a book,” “give Rina a book,” and “buy Rina a book” with the same surface order. Indonesian selects the matching derivation rather than copying that order across unrelated verb forms.

Kami mengirimkan undangan kepada seluruh kepala sekolah.

We sent invitations to all the school principals.

Kami mengirimi seluruh kepala sekolah undangan resmi.

We sent all the school principals formal invitations.

Both are grammatical, but the first privileges the invitations and the second privileges the recipients.

Recipient, beneficiary, and goal phrases

Use kepada for a human or institutional recipient in careful language, untuk for a beneficiary or intended use, and ke for a spatial/institutional goal.

Petugas menyerahkan kartu akses kepada teknisi baru.

The officer handed the access card to the new technician.

Saya menyiapkan makan malam untuk teman sekamar saya.

I prepared dinner for my roommate.

Perusahaan mengirim peralatan itu ke lokasi proyek.

The company sent the equipment to the project site.

These prepositional participants are semantically important without automatically becoming direct objects.

Common Mistakes

Copying English double-object order after mengirimkan

❌ Panitia mengirimkan peserta sertifikat elektronik.

Incorrect standard frame—mengirimkan selects the theme first.

✅ Panitia mengirimkan sertifikat elektronik kepada peserta.

The committee sends an electronic certificate to the participant.

Alternatively, choose recipient-oriented mengirimi peserta sertifikat elektronik.

Adding kepada after mengirimi

❌ Sari mengirimi kepada Rudi foto acara kemarin.

Incorrect—the selected recipient after mengirimi takes no kepada.

✅ Sari mengirimi Rudi foto acara kemarin.

Sari sent Rudi photos of yesterday's event.

The -i frame already treats Rudi as the core target.

Promoting the wrong participant with dikirimi

❌ Paket itu dikirimi kepada kantor cabang.

Incorrect—dikirimi promotes a recipient or target, not the transferred package.

The package was sent to the branch office by courier.

Use dikirimkan or dikirim when the theme is the passive subject.

Reversing the roles after memberi

❌ Petugas memberi formulir saya di meja depan.

Incorrect for ‘the officer gave me a form’—the intended recipient and theme are reversed.

✅ Petugas memberi saya formulir baru di meja depan.

The officer gave me a new form at the front desk.

The recipient normally precedes the theme after memberi.

Treating every -kan verb as freely allowing two passive pivots

Incorrect analysis—passive options depend on the lexical and derived argument frame.

The choice between dikirimkan and dikirimi follows the participant selected as the core object.

Key Takeaways

  • Three-participant events distinguish actor, theme, recipient, beneficiary, and goal.
  • Memberi and mengirimi privilege a recipient; memberikan and mengirimkan privilege a theme.
  • Membelikan often privileges a beneficiary, while an untuk phrase can leave the theme as object.
  • Passive promotion reveals the selected core object: dikirimi promotes a recipient, dikirimkan a theme.
  • Do not extend English double-object order across all Indonesian verbs; derivation determines the frame.
