Kepada marks a socially salient goal: the person or organization that receives an object, message, question, apology, attitude, or other directed action. English often uses to, but Indonesian distinguishes a human recipient with kepada from an ordinary destination with ke and a static holder with pada.
Recipients of transfer
When an object changes hands, kepada introduces the recipient. It is especially clear with verbs such as memberikan “give,” menyerahkan “hand over,” mengirimkan “send,” and membagikan “distribute.”
I gave the gift to Mom after dinner.
The manager handed the monthly report to the director this morning.
Panitia membagikan air minum kepada para peserta.
The committee distributed drinking water to the participants.
The capitalization in kepada Ibu reflects direct reference to one's mother as a title or form of address. A general description remains lowercase: kepada ibu anak itu “to that child's mother.” This does not change the function of kepada.
English to also introduces places, but Indonesian separates the two meanings. A parcel is sent ke Surabaya because the city is its destination; it is sent kepada Rina because Rina is its recipient.
We sent the parcel to Surabaya, and the courier then handed it to Rina.
The first clause names the geographical destination, while the second names the human recipient. Ke Surabaya and kepada Rina therefore mark different roles even within one delivery chain.
Messages, reports, letters, and questions
Communication is treated as a transfer of content. The addressee therefore follows kepada even when no physical object moves.
I’ve reported the problem to the security officer.
Rina menulis surat kepada orang tuanya setiap bulan.
Rina writes a letter to her parents every month.
Please put that question to the committee chair after this session.
Pihak sekolah mengirim pemberitahuan kepada semua orang tua murid.
The school sent a notice to all the pupils’ parents.
On a form or delivery label, Kepada: can explicitly introduce the addressee, as in Kepada: Kepala Sekolah. A formal letter address block instead conventionally uses Yth. Kepala Sekolah, where Yth. abbreviates Yang terhormat “the respected”; careful editors avoid the redundant combination Kepada Yth. In a full clause, kepada remains an ordinary preposition rather than a politeness marker by itself.
Apologies, thanks, and directed attitudes
Actions and attitudes that are socially directed at someone also take kepada. Common combinations include meminta maaf kepada “apologize to,” berterima kasih kepada “thank,” bersikap ... kepada “behave ... toward,” and setia kepada “be loyal to.”
I apologized to the customer because the order was late.
We thank all the volunteers who have helped.
Dia selalu bersikap ramah kepada tetangga baru.
She is always friendly toward the new neighbors.
Civil servants must be loyal to the state and the constitution.
Organizations, institutions, and countries can follow kepada when they are understood as socially capable recipients or objects of allegiance. The complement therefore need not be a biologically human individual; it must function as a participant in a social relation.
Kepada versus ke
Use ke for spatial destinations, including destinations associated with people: ke dokter can mean going to see the doctor, while ke rumah Rina means going to Rina's house. Use kepada when the person fills the grammatical role of recipient or addressee.
Besok pagi saya harus pergi ke dokter.
Tomorrow morning I have to go to the doctor.
I’ll give the examination results to the doctor.
In casual speech, ke frequently extends to human recipients: Kirim saja ke saya “Just send it to me” (informal). This is natural conversation, especially with digital messages and transfers. Careful written Indonesian normally preserves kepada saya. Learners should recognize the colloquial extension without carrying it into every formal sentence.
Kirim saja fotonya ke saya lewat WhatsApp.
Just send the photo to me on WhatsApp. (informal)
Please send the document to me by email. (formal)
Kepada versus pada
Pada attaches a state, object, responsibility, or choice to a holder. Kepada presents that person as the goal of a directed event. Compare the static and dynamic relationships:
Berkas aslinya masih ada pada saya.
The original file is still with me.
Tolong kembalikan berkas itu kepada saya besok.
Please return that file to me tomorrow.
Similarly, kesalahan ada pada saya means “the fault lies with me,” while dia mengeluh kepada saya means “she complained to me.” The dedicated pada versus kepada guide treats the gray areas in more detail.
Kepada versus untuk
Kepada profiles the actual endpoint of a transfer; untuk profiles the intended beneficiary. Those people are often the same, but not necessarily.
I bought a gift for Rina, then entrusted it to Budi.
Rina benefits from or is intended to receive the gift, while Budi is the actual recipient of the act of entrusting. This distinction is one reason English for and to cannot be translated mechanically.
When kepada can be omitted
Some transfer verbs allow a recipient immediately after the verb, without kepada. Compare memberi Rina buku with memberikan buku kepada Rina. The first construction places the recipient before the theme; the second places the theme first and explicitly marks the recipient.
Ayah memberi saya uang untuk membeli obat.
Dad gave me money to buy medicine.
Dad gave the money to me before leaving.
This optionality belongs to particular argument patterns, not to kepada in general. You cannot simply delete it while leaving saya after the theme: careful Standard Indonesian prefers memberikan uang itu kepada saya, not memberikan uang itu saya. A bound pronoun can produce another pattern, memberinya uang “give him/her money”; see ditransitive clauses and pronoun clitics.
Spelling and pronouns
Kepada is one word, never ke pada. It remains separate from a following full noun or independent pronoun: kepada Rina, kepada saya, kepada mereka. The clitics -ku and -nya attach: kepadaku, kepadanya. Kepada-mu with a hyphen may appear in devotional or highly marked orthographic contexts when -Mu refers respectfully to God; ordinary kepadamu is written solid.
Common Mistakes
1. Using kepada for a place
❌ Setelah makan siang, kami kembali kepada kantor.
Incorrect — the office is a spatial destination, not a social recipient.
✅ Setelah makan siang, kami kembali ke kantor.
After lunch, we returned to the office.
2. Using kepada for a static holder
❌ Kunci cadangan masih ada kepada saya.
Incorrect — the key is statically held by me, not directed toward me.
✅ Kunci cadangan masih ada pada saya.
I still have the spare key.
3. Splitting kepada into two words
❌ Saya sudah meminta maaf ke pada pelanggan.
Incorrect — kepada is one established preposition.
✅ Saya sudah meminta maaf kepada pelanggan.
I’ve apologized to the customer.
4. Deleting kepada without changing word order
❌ Mereka memberikan bantuan itu warga terdampak banjir.
Incorrect in careful standard usage — the post-theme recipient needs kepada.
They gave the aid to residents affected by the flood.
Key Takeaways
- Kepada marks human or personified recipients, addressees, and targets of directed social attitudes.
- Contrast ke kantor with kepada direktur, and ada pada saya with berikan kepada saya.
- Untuk marks the intended beneficiary; kepada marks the actual endpoint of a directed event.
- Write kepada as one word, but separate it from full complements: kepada Rina.
