Indonesian ke marks direction toward a goal: ke pasar “to the market” and ke Jakarta “to Jakarta.” It is a free preposition, so it is written separately from the place that follows. By contrast, di presents a setting where an event is located: ke pasar answers “where to?”, while di pasar answers “where?”.
This creates a clean contrast between path and setting. English at, in, and to do not divide space in exactly the same way, so learners should identify whether the clause describes movement toward an endpoint or activity at a location. This page focuses on that choice while leaving full subordinate-clause syntax and derivational-affix paradigms to dedicated pages.
Movement toward a destination
Use ke + place with motion toward a destination.
Saya pergi ke pasar sebelum sarapan.
I am going to the market before breakfast.
Mereka pindah ke Jakarta tahun lalu.
They moved to Jakarta last year.
Tolong bawa kursi ini ke ruang rapat.
Please take this chair to the meeting room.
Anak-anak berlari ke halaman ketika hujan berhenti.
The children ran to the yard when the rain stopped.
The verb supplies the kind of motion—pergi, pindah, bawa, berlari—and ke introduces its spatial goal. The preposition does not attach to the destination: ke pasar, ke Jakarta, ke ruang rapat.
Ke versus di: path versus setting
Compare the same place with motion and location:
| Question | Preposition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Where to? | ke | Kami pergi ke pasar. |
| Where? | di | Kami berbelanja di pasar. |
Pagi ini Rina pergi ke kantor dan bekerja di kantor sampai sore.
This morning Rina went to the office and worked at the office until late afternoon.
Bus itu berhenti di terminal sebelum berangkat ke bandara.
The bus stops at the terminal before leaving for the airport.
Using di after a motion verb can change the phrase from destination to setting. Berjalan di taman means “walk in the park”; berjalan ke taman means “walk to the park.” The verb alone does not decide: the intended spatial relation does.
The core di page develops static location. English speakers should resist choosing di merely because English uses “in” with a city; after destination-directed motion, Indonesian uses ke Jakarta.
Source-to-goal ranges
Dari X ke Y traces a path or range from its source to its endpoint.
Perjalanan dari Bandung ke Yogyakarta memakan waktu sekitar tujuh jam.
The trip from Bandung to Yogyakarta takes about seven hours.
Dia berjalan dari meja ke meja untuk membagikan formulir.
He/She walked from table to table to distribute the forms.
Toko itu buka dari Senin ke Jumat.
The shop is open from Monday to Friday.
The same source–goal geometry extends from literal travel to ordered series and time ranges. Dari meja ke meja moves through successive goals; dari Senin ke Jumat maps a temporal interval as a path.
For a range with an inclusive boundary, Indonesian also uses sampai: dari Senin sampai Jumat. The page on boundaries and endpoints develops the difference.
Ke and sampai
Ke identifies a goal. Sampai means “reach/as far as/until” and highlights a boundary. They can occur together when both the reaching and the destination matter.
Kami berjalan sampai ke rumah Nenek karena tidak ada angkot.
We walked all the way to Grandmother's house because there was no public minibus.
Air banjir naik sampai ke lantai dua.
The floodwater rose as high as the second floor.
Saya naik bus ke terminal, lalu berjalan sampai ke hotel.
I took a bus to the terminal, then walked all the way to the hotel.
The required sampai ke rumah emphasizes the reached endpoint. Plain ke rumah names the destination without the “all the way/reach” contribution. In sampai di rumah, sampai is the verb “arrive” and di rumah locates the resulting arrival: Saya sampai di rumah pukul sembilan “I arrived home at nine.”
Destinations are not always physical buildings
The goal can be a person-associated place, an event, a direction, or an abstract stage understood as an endpoint.
Besok saya harus ke dokter untuk pemeriksaan rutin.
Tomorrow I have to go to the doctor for a routine checkup.
Silakan geser sedikit ke kanan.
Please move slightly to the right.
Pembicaraan beralih ke masalah anggaran.
The discussion shifted to the budget issue.
In ke dokter, the doctor metonymically identifies a consultation or place. This differs from kepada dokter, which normally marks a doctor as a recipient or socially directed goal: menyerahkan hasil tes kepada dokter.
Free ke versus attached ke-
Not every written sequence ke has prepositional meaning. The preposition is separate, but the ordinal and derivational prefixes attach.
| Form | Function | Spelling |
|---|---|---|
| ke rumah | direction “to the house” | separate |
| kedua | ordinal “second” | attached |
| ketiga | ordinal “third” | attached |
| keindahan | derived noun “beauty” | attached affixes |
Kami turun di halte kedua, lalu berjalan ke museum.
We get off at the second stop, then walk to the museum.
The required kedua is one word because ke- is an ordinal prefix, not a destination preposition. Likewise, keluar “go/come out” is a lexical verb written solid, while ke luar gedung means “to the outside of the building.” Full derivational patterns belong elsewhere.
Verbs that do not take ke
Some transitive verbs take their destination as a direct object. Do not insert ke merely because English uses “to” in a related expression.
Kami mengunjungi Jakarta saat liburan sekolah.
We visited Jakarta during the school holiday.
Compare pergi ke Jakarta “go to Jakarta” with mengunjungi Jakarta “visit Jakarta.” The words a verb can take directly matter as much as the spatial meaning.
Orthography
Always separate prepositional ke from its complement: ke rumah, ke pasar, ke Jakarta. Free di is also separate: di rumah. Attached prefixes ke- and di- remain solid in forms such as kedua and ditulis. Follow EYD V word boundaries; ordinary Indonesian uses no accent marks here.
Common Mistakes
1. Joining ke to a destination
❌ Saya berjalan kerumah setelah hujan berhenti.
Incorrect spelling — destination ke is a separate preposition.
✅ Saya berjalan ke rumah setelah hujan berhenti.
I walked home after the rain stopped.
2. Using di for a destination
❌ Besok kami pergi di pasar.
Incorrect destination marking — di locates an event at the market.
✅ Besok kami pergi ke pasar.
Tomorrow we are going to the market.
3. Separating the ordinal prefix
❌ Kantornya berada di lantai ke dua.
Incorrect EYD spelling of the ordinal.
✅ Kantornya berada di lantai kedua.
The office is on the second floor.
4. Adding ke after a direct transitive verb
❌ Kami mengunjungi ke Jakarta bulan lalu.
Incorrect — mengunjungi takes Jakarta directly as its object.
✅ Kami mengunjungi Jakarta bulan lalu.
We visited Jakarta last month.
