Indonesian ordinals are highly regular: pertama is the usual “first,” and ke- + cardinal forms the rest. The harder point is syntactic, not morphological. Buku ketiga selects the third book in an order, while ketiga buku totals the whole set of three books.
First Through Tenth
| Order | Word form | Digit form |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | pertama; kesatu | ke-1 |
| 2nd | kedua | ke-2 |
| 3rd | ketiga | ke-3 |
| 4th | keempat | ke-4 |
| 5th | kelima | ke-5 |
| 6th | keenam | ke-6 |
| 7th | ketujuh | ke-7 |
| 8th | kedelapan | ke-8 |
| 9th | kesembilan | ke-9 |
| 10th | kesepuluh | ke-10 |
All word forms are written solid. Keempat is one word, not ke empat. With digits, the hyphen makes the prefix boundary visible: ke-4, not ke4 or ke 4.
Mira menjadi peserta pertama yang tiba di ruang ujian.
Mira was the first participant to arrive in the examination room.
Bus kedua berangkat sepuluh menit setelah bus pertama.
The second bus leaves ten minutes after the first bus.
Pada percobaan kesepuluh, mesin itu akhirnya menyala.
On the tenth attempt, the machine finally started.
Pertama and kesatu
Pertama is the ordinary, idiomatic choice for the first item, winner, child, meeting, chapter, or step. Kesatu is grammatical and can appear in explicitly numbered series, paired contrasts, fixed administrative labels, or explanations of the ke- pattern. It is not a required replacement for pertama.
Rapat pertama membahas tujuan, sedangkan rapat kedua membahas anggaran.
The first meeting discusses goals, while the second discusses the budget.
Juara pertama menerima medali emas dan sertifikat.
The first-place winner receives a gold medal and a certificate.
Dalam petunjuk teknis ini, kelompok kesatu disebut Kelompok A.
In this technical guideline, the first group is called Group A. (structured enumerative label)
In a normal sequence, langkah pertama, kedua, ketiga is more natural than forcing kesatu into every list. Learners should recognize kesatu without assuming it is the default word for “first.”
Ordinal After the Noun
The ordinary noun phrase order is noun + ordinal: buku ketiga, anak kedua, bab kelima, hari kesepuluh. The noun names the series, and the following ordinal selects one member by position.
Saya baru mulai membaca buku ketiga dalam seri itu.
I have just started reading the third book in that series.
Anak kedua mereka sedang kuliah di Surabaya.
Their second child is studying in Surabaya.
Pada hari ketujuh, para peserta kembali ke kota.
On the seventh day, the participants returned to the city.
Pertanyaan kedelapan belum dijawab oleh kelompok kami.
The eighth question has not yet been answered by our group.
English puts third before book. Indonesian places the head noun first, then the ordering expression. This mirrors the broader noun–modifier order.
Buku ketiga Versus ketiga buku
Moving a ke- numeral before the noun can change it from ordinal selection to collective totality:
| Phrase | Structure | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| buku ketiga | noun + ordinal | the third book |
| ketiga buku | collective + noun | all three books |
| peserta keempat | noun + ordinal | the fourth participant |
| keempat peserta | collective + noun | all four participants |
Buku ketiga itu membahas sejarah pelabuhan.
That third book discusses the history of the harbor.
Ketiga buku itu tersedia di perpustakaan daerah.
All three of those books are available at the regional library.
Peserta keempat diminta menunggu di luar ruangan.
The fourth participant was asked to wait outside the room.
Keempat peserta diminta menandatangani berita acara.
All four participants were asked to sign the official record.
This is not accidental ambiguity inside ketiga itself. Position supplies the reading: after a noun, ordinal; before a counted noun, collective total. The same contrast extends beyond three.
Collective Forms and Context
Collective kedua means “both,” ketiga “all three,” and so on. It refers to a complete contextually given set, not merely an unspecified number.
Kedua pintu itu harus dikunci sebelum toko ditutup.
Both of those doors must be locked before the shop closes.
Kelima anggota tim hadir dalam evaluasi bulanan.
All five team members attended the monthly evaluation.
Kesepuluh peserta berhasil menyelesaikan pelatihan.
All ten participants successfully completed the training.
The emphatic form kedua-duanya “both of them” contains genuine repetition and takes a hyphen. It is not the spelling of ordinary ordinal kedua.
Kedua-duanya sudah saya periksa, dan tidak ada kesalahan.
I have checked both of them, and there are no errors.
Ordinals Without an Overt Noun
Once the series is known, yang + ordinal means “the ordinal one.” This avoids repeating the noun.
Saya memilih kursi yang kedua dari pintu masuk.
I chose the second seat from the entrance.
Versi pertama terlalu panjang, jadi kami memakai yang ketiga.
The first version was too long, so we used the third one.
The yang phrase behaves as a referential description. Bare ketiga before a noun, by contrast, can trigger the collective reading.
Enumerating Points
At the start of discourse steps, ordinals can stand independently: Pertama, ... Kedua, ... Ketiga, .... They organize an argument or procedure rather than modifying a noun.
Pertama, periksa alamat penerima. Kedua, timbang paketnya.
First, check the recipient's address. Second, weigh the package.
Ketiga, simpan bukti pembayaran sampai barang diterima.
Third, keep the payment receipt until the item is received.
Terakhir, pastikan semua pintu sudah terkunci.
Finally, make sure all the doors are locked.
In formal presentations, speakers may use pertama-tama “first of all,” but that is an adverbial expression with reduplication, not the first ordinal in a numbered list.
Chapter and Section Headings
Words, Arabic digits, and Roman numerals are all possible, but do not stack their ordinal markers:
| Style | Example | Note |
|---|---|---|
| word | Bab Ketiga: Metode | ordinal word after noun |
| Arabic digit | Bab ke-3: Metode | hyphen after ke- |
| Roman numeral | Bab III: Metode | the numeral itself serves as the section label |
Silakan baca Bab ke-4 sebelum pertemuan hari Jumat.
Please read Chapter 4 before Friday's meeting.
Penjelasan rinci terdapat pada Bagian Kedua laporan ini.
The detailed explanation appears in Part Two of this report.
With a long ordinal written in words, the same attachment holds: keseratus, keseratus dua puluh lima. With digits: ke-100, ke-125. See writing numbers for formatting across document types.
ke- Prefix Versus ke Preposition
Ordinal ke- is bound: kedua, keempat, ke-8. Directional ke is a separate preposition: ke sekolah, ke lantai dua. Both can occur close together without merging.
Kami naik ke lantai kedua untuk menemui direktur.
We went up to the second floor to meet the director.
Petugas memindahkan kotak itu ke rak ketiga.
The officer moved the box to the third shelf.
In ke lantai kedua, the first ke is a destination preposition and kedua is an ordinal modifier.
Common Mistakes
1. Writing ke- as a separate word before a number word
❌ Ini adalah rapat ke dua pada bulan Agustus.
Incorrect spelling — ordinal ke- attaches to a written number word.
✅ Ini adalah rapat kedua pada bulan Agustus.
This is the second meeting in August.
2. Omitting the hyphen before a digit
❌ Tim kami menempati posisi ke3 dalam klasemen.
Incorrect digit ordinal — write ke-3 with a hyphen.
✅ Tim kami menempati posisi ke-3 dalam klasemen.
Our team is in third place in the standings.
3. Copying English ordinal-before-noun order
❌ Saya sedang membaca ketiga buku dalam arti buku urutan nomor tiga.
Incorrect for the intended ordinal — ketiga buku means all three books.
✅ Saya sedang membaca buku ketiga dalam seri tersebut.
I am reading the third book in that series.
4. Missing the collective reading
❌ Keempat saksi berarti hanya saksi yang berada pada urutan keempat.
Incorrect — before the noun, keempat includes the complete set of four witnesses.
✅ Keempat saksi memberikan keterangan pada hari yang sama.
All four witnesses gave statements on the same day.
5. Assuming every ordinal must begin with ke-
❌ Pertama tidak boleh dipakai karena semua ordinal wajib berawalan ke-.
Incorrect rule — pertama is the ordinary first ordinal even though it lacks ke-.
✅ Ia meraih juara pertama dalam lomba pidato tingkat kota.
She won first place in the city-level speech competition.
Key Takeaways
- Use pertama as the ordinary first ordinal; recognize kesatu in structured labels.
- Attach ke- to words (ketiga) and hyphenate it before digits (ke-3).
- Put ordinals after nouns: buku ketiga, peserta keempat.
- Put the same forms before nouns for a collective total: ketiga buku, keempat peserta.
- Use Pertama, Kedua, Ketiga to enumerate points and avoid stacking ke- with Roman numeral headings.
