Indonesian cardinal numbers do not change for gender or noun class, and counted nouns do not acquire a plural ending. The main challenge from zero to ten is not memorizing the list; it is learning how nol and kosong divide mathematical zero from an empty slot, and how a numeral fixes quantity while the noun remains invariant.
The Basic Forms
| Digit | Indonesian | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | nol | mathematical zero; quantity; scores; careful digit reading |
| 0 | kosong | empty; a zero treated as an unfilled slot in a code (informal/neutral spoken) |
| 1 | satu | one |
| 2 | dua | two |
| 3 | tiga | three |
| 4 | empat | four |
| 5 | lima | five |
| 6 | enam | six |
| 7 | tujuh | seven |
| 8 | delapan | eight |
| 9 | sembilan | nine |
| 10 | sepuluh | ten |
Anak itu menghitung satu, dua, tiga, empat, lalu berhenti sebentar.
The child counts one, two, three, four, then pauses briefly.
Nomor yang hilang setelah sembilan adalah sepuluh.
The number missing after nine is ten.
There are no masculine and feminine versions. Dua is still dua with people, animals, objects, times, and abstract nouns.
Nol and kosong Are Not Perfect Synonyms
Use nol when zero is a number or measured value. A calculation can equal nol, a team can have nol points, and a thermometer can show nol derajat. This is the safest form in mathematical, scientific, and careful administrative reading.
Lima dikurangi lima sama dengan nol.
Five minus five equals zero.
Suhu di ruang pendingin itu tepat nol derajat Celsius.
The temperature in that cold room is exactly zero degrees Celsius.
Pada akhir babak pertama, skor pertandingan masih 0–0.
At the end of the first half, the match score is still nil–nil. (read nol nol)
Kosong is first an adjective meaning “empty”: gelas kosong, kamar kosong, kursi kosong. In spoken digit strings, people also use it for a written 0 because the digit is conceptualized as an empty slot. That is common in phone, room, and code reading, but nol is also widely used for those digits—especially in careful dictation.
Kamar 205 dibaca dua kosong lima dalam percakapan hotel itu.
Room 205 is read 'two zero five' in that hotel conversation. (spoken code reading)
Nomor teleponnya dimulai dengan nol delapan satu dua.
The phone number begins with zero eight one two. (careful digit reading)
Kolom kedua masih kosong; jangan tulis angka nol jika datanya belum ada.
The second field is still empty; do not write the number zero if the data is unavailable.
The final example shows the conceptual contrast directly: an empty field is not automatically a recorded numerical value of zero.
Numeral Before Noun
The neutral order is cardinal + noun: dua buku, tiga kursi, sepuluh peserta. The noun does not change form. Indonesian buku has general number; tiga supplies the exact cardinality.
Saya meminjam dua buku dari perpustakaan kampus.
I borrowed two books from the campus library.
Tiga kursi di dekat jendela masih tersedia.
Three chairs near the window are still available.
Rapat kecil itu dihadiri sepuluh peserta.
Ten participants attended the small meeting.
English adds plural -s after most numbers. Indonesian neither adds a suffix nor mechanically repeats the noun. Dua buku expresses two books completely.
Empat siswa sedang menunggu hasil ujian.
Four students are waiting for the examination results.
Kami membutuhkan enam meja untuk ruang pelatihan.
We need six tables for the training room.
Classifiers Can Be Inserted
A classifier can appear between numeral and noun: numeral + classifier + noun. It makes the counting unit explicit, but classifiers are often optional in contemporary Indonesian. This page illustrates the structure without surveying the full inventory.
Tiga orang teknisi memeriksa jaringan pagi ini.
Three technicians checked the network this morning.
Seorang perawat menemani pasien ke ruang pemeriksaan.
One nurse accompanied the patient to the examination room.
Dua buah koper sudah dimasukkan ke bagasi.
Two suitcases have been put in the luggage compartment.
Seorang is se- + orang and is written as one word. With larger numbers, the numeral remains separate: dua orang, not duaorang. Classifierless tiga teknisi and dua koper are also natural. The classifier overview explains when the fuller phrases are useful.
Counting People and Objects in Context
Satu can introduce a definite count or an indefinite participant depending on context. Satu tamu stresses the count “one guest”; seorang tamu often resembles “a guest,” presenting one human individual.
Hanya satu tamu yang belum mengisi daftar hadir.
Only one guest has not signed the attendance list.
Seorang tamu meninggalkan payung di dekat pintu.
A guest left an umbrella near the door.
Petugas menemukan tujuh tas dan delapan kotak di gudang.
The officer found seven bags and eight boxes in the storeroom.
When a numeral is already present, do not pluralize the noun through reduplication unless a special distributive or contrastive meaning is genuinely intended. Simple count uses the bare noun.
Digit Strings Are Not Quantities
A quantity is read as one compositional number, but a phone number, PIN, room number, bus route, or code is usually a sequence of digits. Every digit remains separately recoverable.
Kode pintunya 4079: empat nol tujuh sembilan.
The door code is 4079: four zero seven nine.
Bus nomor 10 berhenti di depan pasar.
Bus number 10 stops in front of the market.
Tolong ulangi empat angka terakhir: sembilan, dua, nol, enam.
Please repeat the last four digits: nine, two, zero, six.
Room 205 is normally a label read digit by digit in the earlier example; 205 orang would be a quantity read compositionally with the larger-number system.
Scores and Repeated Numerals
In written sports reporting, a score is efficiently shown as 3–0. In speech, it is read tiga nol. A tie shown as 0–0 is read nol nol. The order belongs to the named teams or home–away convention, not to mathematical subtraction.
Tim sekolah kami menang dengan skor 3–0 pada pertandingan sore tadi.
Our school team won 3–0 in this afternoon's match.
Setelah dua set, kedudukan kedua pemain masih imbang 1–1.
After two sets, the two players are still tied at one set each.
Genuine repeated numeral words take a hyphen. Satu-satu can mean “one by one,” while dua-dua can mean “in twos.” This is meaningful repetition, not plural marking on a noun.
Peserta dipanggil satu-satu untuk mengambil kartu ujian.
Participants were called one by one to collect their examination cards.
Anak-anak masuk ke aula dua-dua agar barisnya tetap rapi.
The children entered the hall two by two so the lines stayed orderly.
Written Words and Digits
Simple standalone counts in running prose are often written as words. Digits are natural for scores, codes, tables, measurements, and data series. Indonesian uses a point to group thousands and a comma for decimals; those conventions become central on the later number pages and the number-spelling guide.
Dalam percobaan pertama, dua dari lima lampu menyala.
In the first experiment, two of five lamps lit up.
Tabel itu membandingkan hasil kelompok 1, 2, dan 3.
The table compares the results of groups 1, 2, and 3.
Affixes attach to number words: seorang, sepuluh, and ordinal kesatu are written solid. With a digit, ordinal ke- takes a hyphen, as in ke-2; the full ordinal system is treated separately.
Common Mistakes
1. Using kosong as mathematical zero
❌ Tiga dikurangi tiga sama dengan kosong.
Incorrect mathematical wording — the result is nol, not an empty container or slot.
✅ Tiga dikurangi tiga sama dengan nol.
Three minus three equals zero.
2. Treating every written 0 as nol regardless of conversational function
❌ Kata kosong tidak pernah dapat dipakai ketika membaca kode kamar.
Incorrect — kosong commonly reads a zero as an empty code position in speech.
✅ Nomor kamar 304 dapat dibaca tiga kosong empat dalam percakapan.
Room number 304 can be read 'three zero four' in conversation.
3. Pluralizing a noun after a numeral
❌ Kami membeli empat buku-buku untuk kelas baru.
Incorrect simple count — empat already supplies the exact plurality.
✅ Kami membeli empat buku untuk kelas baru.
We bought four books for the new class.
4. Putting the classifier after the noun
❌ Tiga dokter orang mengikuti rapat daring.
Incorrect order — the classifier belongs between numeral and noun.
✅ Tiga orang dokter mengikuti rapat daring.
Three doctors attended the online meeting.
5. Omitting the reduplication hyphen
❌ Tamu dipersilakan masuk satu satu.
Incorrect spelling — genuine full numeral repetition uses a hyphen.
✅ Tamu dipersilakan masuk satu-satu.
Guests are invited to enter one by one.
Key Takeaways
- Learn nol/kosong, satu, dua, tiga, empat, lima, enam, tujuh, delapan, sembilan, sepuluh.
- Nol is numerical zero; kosong is emptiness and a common spoken code-digit reading.
- Put the numeral before an invariant noun: tiga buku, not a pluralized noun.
- Optional classifiers fit between numeral and noun; write seorang solid but dua orang separately.
- Quantities are composed as numbers, while phone, room, and code labels are usually read digit by digit.
