Pada locates something at a conceptual point: a point in time, a holder of responsibility or possession, a section of a text, or the focus of a relation. English often translates it as on, at, in, or not at all, so its internal logic is more useful than any one English equivalent.
A point rather than a physical container
The closest contrast is with di. Di places something in concrete physical space: di meja βon the table,β di kantor βat the office.β Pada instead presents its complement as the point at which a time, state, responsibility, or abstract relation is anchored.
Kunci mobilnya ada di meja dekat pintu.
The car key is on the table near the door.
Keputusan akhir ada pada ketua tim.
The final decision rests with the team leader.
The physical table is a location that can be occupied. The team leader is not a location in that sense; the decision is conceptually attached to that person. This explains why mechanically translating both English at and on with one Indonesian preposition causes errors.
Time points
In careful Standard Indonesian, pada introduces named or specified time points: days, dates, years, hours, stages, and occasions. It is particularly common in planned announcements and formal writing (formal).
Rapat berikutnya akan diadakan pada hari Senin.
The next meeting will be held on Monday.
Pendaftaran ditutup pada pukul lima sore.
Registration closes at five in the afternoon.
Keluarga kami pindah ke Balikpapan pada tahun 2018.
Our family moved to Balikpapan in 2018.
In conversation, a time phrase can often appear without a preposition: Rapatnya hari Senin βThe meeting is Monday.β That shorter pattern is neutral in everyday speech. Di hari Senin is also heard (informal), influenced by the spatial use of di, but edited Standard Indonesian normally prefers pada hari Senin or simply hari Senin.
Hari Senin saya bekerja dari rumah, jadi kita bisa bertemu siang.
On Monday Iβm working from home, so we can meet at lunchtime.
For intervals and starting points rather than single anchors, use forms such as selama, sejak, and dari ... sampai ...; see relative time expressions.
A person as holder
Pada + person can mark the person with whom an object, responsibility, right, fault, or choice resides. This is a static relationship, not motion toward a recipient.
Kunci cadangan masih ada pada saya; nanti saya bawakan.
I still have the spare key; Iβll bring it later.
Tanggung jawab akhir ada pada saya, bukan pada staf baru.
The final responsibility lies with me, not with the new staff member.
Pilihan tetap ada pada Anda.
The choice remains yours.
The required phrase pada saya therefore does not simply equal English to me. It describes attachment or possession: something is βat/with me.β If an action directs or transfers something to me, kepada is normally the better choice: Berikan kuncinya kepada saya βGive me the key.β
Formal and textual location
Pada is also used for positions treated as points in an organized whole: a page, section, stage, level, or item in a document or process. This use is frequent in instructional, administrative, and academic prose (formal/academic).
Penjelasan lengkap tercantum pada halaman 12.
The full explanation appears on page 12.
Pada tahap pertama, tim akan mewawancarai semua calon.
At the first stage, the team will interview all candidates.
Kesalahan yang sama muncul pada bagian akhir laporan.
The same error appears in the final section of the report.
There is genuine overlap with di here. Di halaman 12 is also common, especially when the page is viewed as a physical or textual location. Pada halaman 12 is more characteristic of careful expository prose and highlights the indexed point. The choice is not always governed by a sharp rule; genre and established collocation matter.
Verbs and fixed expressions with pada
Some verbs and expressions select pada because they describe dependence, focus, or an attitude anchored on a target. These combinations must be learned as collocations rather than translated word for word.
Keberhasilan proyek ini bergantung pada kerja sama semua pihak.
The success of this project depends on cooperation from everyone involved.
Mari kita berfokus pada masalah yang bisa diselesaikan hari ini.
Letβs focus on the problems we can solve today.
Dia sangat percaya pada kemampuan anaknya.
She has great faith in her childβs ability.
Frequent discourse expressions include pada dasarnya βbasically/fundamentally,β pada umumnya βgenerally,β and pada akhirnya βin the end.β Their meanings are conventional, but the idea of an abstract point remains visible.
Pada dasarnya, kami setuju dengan usul itu.
Basically, we agree with that proposal.
Pada umumnya, bus lebih ramai pada jam pulang kerja.
In general, buses are more crowded during the evening rush hour.
Pada versus kepada
Both can precede people, but they express different geometry. Pada locates a state or relation at a person; kepada directs an action, message, feeling, or transferred object toward a person.
Laporan asli masih ada pada direktur.
The original report is still with the director.
Saya sudah menyerahkan salinannya kepada direktur.
Iβve already handed the copy to the director.
Everyday speech sometimes uses pada where careful prose prefers kepada, particularly after verbs such as bilang βsayβ (informal). Do not treat this colloquial overlap as evidence that the words are interchangeable everywhere. See the full pada versus kepada guide.
Spelling
As a preposition, pada is written separately: pada hari Senin, pada saya, pada dasarnya. Kepada, by contrast, is one established word; it is never written ke pada. The spelling of either word does not follow the attachment rule for verbal prefixes such as di- in ditulis.
Common Mistakes
1. Using di before a named day in careful Indonesian
β Rapatnya di hari Senin.
Nonstandard in careful usage β di treats the day like a physical location.
β Rapatnya pada hari Senin.
The meeting is on Monday.
2. Using kepada for a time point
β Acara dimulai kepada pukul tujuh malam.
Incorrect β kepada marks a human or personified goal, not a time point.
β Acara dimulai pada pukul tujuh malam.
The event starts at seven in the evening.
3. Using pada for an ordinary physical location
β Ponselmu tertinggal pada meja dapur.
Unnatural β the kitchen table is an ordinary physical location.
β Ponselmu tertinggal di meja dapur.
You left your phone on the kitchen table.
4. Joining pada to its complement
β Keputusan itu ada padaSaya.
Incorrect β pada is a separate preposition and must not be joined to saya.
β Keputusan itu ada pada saya.
The decision rests with me.
Key Takeaways
- Use pada for time points and for states anchored to a holder, section, stage, or abstract focus.
- Use di for ordinary concrete location: di meja, not pada meja.
- Use kepada when an action or message is directed toward a human recipient.
- Write pada separately from the phrase that follows it.
