-kan Valency Patterns: Subjects, Objects, and Argument Order

The suffix -kan does not create one universal object. In memasukkan kunci, the selected object is a moving theme; in membersihkan meja, it is the entity brought into a clean state; in benefactive membacakan anak buku, the child is the primary object and the book is a secondary theme. Voice morphology then decides which selected participant appears as subject.

English word order can look deceptively similar, especially in “read the child a book.” Reliable analysis combines the lexical frame, the voice form, relativization, and passive alternations. This page develops those tests; the overview introduces the meanings and formation.

Start with the full argument frame

Actor-voice frameActor subjectPrimary objectOther participant
Guru membacakan anak bukuguruanak, beneficiarybuku, secondary theme
Petugas memasukkan kunci ke lacipetugaskunci, moving themeke laci, goal
Rina membersihkan mejaRinameja, affected themeoptional manner/instrument
Petugas membukakan tamu pintupetugastamu, beneficiarypintu, secondary theme

Guru membacakan anak itu buku cerita baru.

The teacher reads that child a new storybook.

Petugas memasukkan kunci kamar ke amplop kecil.

The officer puts the room key into a small envelope.

Rina membersihkan meja kerja dengan cairan khusus.

Rina cleans the desk with a special solution.

Petugas membukakan pengunjung itu pintu samping.

The officer opens the side door for that visitor.

The noun directly after an actor-voice verb is strong evidence for primary-object status, but semantic roles differ. The child and visitor benefit; the key moves; the desk changes state.

💡
Label two layers separately: grammatical relation—subject, primary object, secondary object—and semantic role—actor, beneficiary, theme, goal. One label cannot replace the other.

Voice morphology identifies the subject

In actor voice, the actor precedes meN-...-kan. In di- passive, a selected object becomes the subject, while the actor can follow the verb or appear with oleh. In pronoun-agent object voice, the selected object comes first and the pronominal actor immediately precedes the stem without meN-.

Ibu membacakan Dita sebuah dongeng.

Mother reads Dita a fairy tale.

Dita dibacakan sebuah dongeng oleh ibunya.

Dita is read a fairy tale by her mother.

Dongeng itu saya bacakan untuk Dita sebelum tidur.

I read that fairy tale to Dita before bed.

The first clause has actor-subject Ibu. In the second, beneficiary Dita is passive subject. In the third, theme dongeng itu is the clause topic/selected object of the alternative theme-plus-untuk frame, while saya is the pronominal actor.

For caused motion and resultatives, the moving or changing theme becomes passive subject:

Kunci kamar dimasukkan petugas ke dalam amplop.

The room key is put into an envelope by the officer.

Meja kerja dibersihkan Rina sebelum rapat.

The desk is cleaned by Rina before the meeting.

Kunci kamar itu sudah saya masukkan ke amplop.

I have put that room key into the envelope.

Meja kerja itu akan kami bersihkan setelah makan siang.

We will clean that desk after lunch.

Saya masukkan and kami bersihkan are object voice. Retaining memasukkan or membersihkan after the pronominal actor would mix actor and object voice.

The benefactive double-object asymmetry

In the bare double-object construction, the beneficiary immediately after the verb is the primary object. It can become the passive subject; the following theme normally stays after the verb.

Ayah membacakan anak-anak surat dari sekolah.

Dad reads the children a letter from school.

Anak-anak dibacakan surat dari sekolah oleh Ayah.

The children are read a letter from school by Dad.

Penjaga membukakan kami pintu gerbang.

The guard opens the gate for us.

Kami dibukakan pintu gerbang oleh penjaga.

The guard opens the gate for us.

The theme cannot simply replace that beneficiary as passive subject while the beneficiary remains bare. To center the theme, choose the alternative frame with untuk or kepada.

Surat dari sekolah dibacakan oleh Ayah kepada anak-anak.

The letter from school is read to the children by Dad.

Pintu gerbang dibukakan oleh penjaga untuk kami.

The gate is opened for us by the guard.

This is a structural alternation, not free swapping. Anak-anak dibacakan surat instantiates beneficiary-first applicative syntax; surat dibacakan kepada anak-anak selects the theme and expresses the addressee obliquely.

💡
If the beneficiary is bare immediately after membacakan or membukakan, expect that beneficiary—not the following theme—to be the passive subject.

Full nouns, pronouns, omission, and reordered clauses

The following sets use the four model families to show how discourse changes expression without erasing valency.

Membacakan anak buku

Pustakawan membacakan Bimo buku tentang antariksa.

The librarian reads Bimo a book about space.

Pustakawan membacakan saya buku tentang antariksa.

The librarian reads me a book about space.

Pustakawan sedang membacakan buku di ruang anak.

The librarian is reading a book aloud in the children's room.

Bimo dibacakan buku tentang antariksa oleh pustakawan.

Bimo is read a book about space by the librarian.

The third clause omits a beneficiary and permits a conventional “read aloud” interpretation. Omission is licensed by this lexical use; it does not prove that every benefactive -kan verb freely drops its beneficiary.

Memasukkan kunci

Santi memasukkan kunci cadangan ke kotak merah.

Santi puts the spare key into the red box.

Santi memasukkannya ke kotak merah.

Santi puts it into the red box.

Sudah saya masukkan ke kotak merah.

I have already put it into the red box.

Kunci cadangan itu dimasukkan Santi ke kotak merah.

That spare key is put into the red box by Santi.

The omitted theme in the third example is recoverable from context. The goal remains a ke phrase even when the theme is omitted or promoted.

Membersihkan meja

Dodi membersihkan meja dekat jendela.

Dodi cleans the table near the window.

Dodi membersihkannya setiap sore.

Dodi cleans it every afternoon.

Mejanya sudah dibersihkan.

The table has already been cleaned.

Sebelum loket dibuka, meja itu dibersihkan Dodi.

Before the counter opens, that table is cleaned by Dodi.

The fourth sentence fronts a time clause, but meja itu remains the passive subject. Fronting an adjunct does not change argument roles.

Dibukakan pintu

Tamu lanjut usia itu dibukakan pintu oleh petugas.

The elderly guest has a door opened for them by the officer.

Kami dibukakan pintu begitu tiba.

A door was opened for us as soon as we arrived.

Begitu tiba, langsung dibukakan pintu untuk kami.

As soon as we arrived, a door was immediately opened for us.

Pintu utama dibukakan untuk tamu lanjut usia itu.

The main door is opened for that elderly guest.

The first two use a beneficiary subject. The third omits both theme specificity and actor while preserving a contextual beneficiary in the untuk phrase. The fourth changes to a theme-centered passive.

Pronouns and clitics

Independent pronouns can occupy ordinary argument positions: membacakan saya buku, membukakan kami pintu. The clitic -nya attaches to its host and may represent different roles according to the frame.

Ibu membacakannya sebuah dongeng.

Mother reads him or her a fairy tale.

Ibu membacakannya dengan suara pelan.

Mother reads it aloud in a soft voice.

In the first sentence, the following theme sebuah dongeng encourages a beneficiary interpretation of -nya. In the second, -nya is most naturally the thing read. Because the surface form is ambiguous, a full noun or untuknya/kepadanya is often clearer.

Ibu membacakan sebuah dongeng untuknya.

Mother reads a fairy tale for him or her.

Pintu itu dibukakan oleh petugas untuknya.

That door is opened for him or her by the officer.

Write memasukkannya, membersihkannya, untuknya, and olehnya solid. Do not separate -nya as an English-style independent object.

Relativization confirms the selected subject

Indonesian directly relativizes the subject with yang. Actor relatives retain actor voice; affected-participant relatives select passive or object voice.

Guru yang membacakan Dita sebuah dongeng tinggal di sebelah sekolah.

The teacher who reads Dita a fairy tale lives next to the school.

Anak yang dibacakan dongeng itu akhirnya tertidur.

The child who was read a fairy tale finally fell asleep.

Kunci yang saya masukkan ke laci adalah kunci gudang.

The key I put into the drawer is the warehouse key.

Meja yang dibersihkan tadi sudah dipakai lagi.

The table that was cleaned earlier has already been used again.

Tamu yang dibukakan pintu oleh petugas itu membawa dua koper.

The guest for whom the officer opened the door is carrying two suitcases.

The relative head is actor in the first clause, beneficiary in the second and fifth, and affected theme in the third and fourth. English uses the same relative word order more freely; Indonesian morphology makes the selected relation overt.

Lexical valency limits

The pattern proposes frames but the lexicon licenses them. Membersihkan normally takes one affected object, not a beneficiary plus theme. Memasukkan requires a moving theme unless context supplies it. Lexicalized verbs such as melakukan, menggunakan, and meninggalkan keep established objects that are not predictable from a literal base meaning.

Tim melakukan evaluasi setelah program berakhir.

The team conducts an evaluation after the program ends. (formal)

Kami menggunakan pintu samping selama renovasi.

We use the side door during the renovation.

Dia meninggalkan payungnya di dalam taksi.

She left her umbrella in the taxi.

Learn an unfamiliar derivative with its natural object and complements, not as a suffix plus an English gloss.

Common Mistakes

1. Reversing beneficiary and theme in a bare double-object frame

❌ Guru membacakan sebuah buku anak itu.

Incorrect for ‘reads the child a book’—the bare beneficiary must precede the theme.

✅ Guru membacakan anak itu sebuah buku.

The teacher reads that child a book.

2. Promoting the secondary theme without changing the frame

❌ Buku itu dibacakan anak itu oleh guru.

Incorrect for the double-object construction—the bare beneficiary, not the following theme, is its passive subject.

✅ Buku itu dibacakan oleh guru kepada anak itu.

That book is read to the child by the teacher.

3. Treating the goal as the moving object

❌ Petugas memasukkan laci dengan kunci cadangan.

Incorrect for putting the key away—this makes the drawer the caused-moving object.

✅ Petugas memasukkan kunci cadangan ke laci.

The officer puts the spare key into the drawer.

4. Detaching a clitic

❌ Dodi membersihkan nya setiap sore.

Incorrect spelling—the object clitic attaches to the verb.

✅ Dodi membersihkannya sebelum pulang.

Dodi cleans it before going home.

5. Retaining meN- after a pronominal actor in object voice

❌ Meja itu akan kami membersihkan besok.

Incorrect object voice—after kami, use the stem without meN-.

✅ Meja itu akan kami bersihkan besok.

We will clean that table tomorrow.

Key Takeaways

  • The selected object can be a beneficiary, moving theme, or affected entity; identify its semantic role separately.
  • A bare benefactive double-object frame privileges the beneficiary: anak dibacakan buku, kami dibukakan pintu.
  • To promote the theme instead, use a theme-centered frame with untuk or kepada.
  • Di- passive and pronoun-agent object voice reorganize the clause but preserve -kan and its valency.
  • Clitic -nya attaches solidly and can be role-ambiguous; an overt noun or prepositional phrase improves clarity.
