Indonesian collective heads do more than gather individuals into “a group.” Rombongan presents a party moving or attending together, kelompok a neutral grouping or organized subdivision, kawanan a herd, flock, or pack, and gerombolan a massed band often viewed negatively. The choice reveals both internal organization and the speaker’s stance.
This page focuses on collective packaging. It leaves general numeral formation, noun reduplication, and the ordinary lexical meanings of member nouns to adjacent pages.
The collective is the counted unit
A collective head can follow a numeral and precede the members: dua kelompok siswa “two groups of students.” Productive se- creates a single collective: serombongan wisatawan, sekelompok siswa, sekawanan burung, segerombolan perampok. These one-forms are written solid.
Two groups of students presented their research results this morning.
Serombongan wisatawan tiba dengan bus pertama.
A party of tourists arrived on the first bus.
Sekawanan burung melintas di atas sawah menjelang senja.
A flock of birds flew over the rice fields toward dusk.
The numeral counts groups, not members. Dua kelompok siswa specifies two groups but does not say how many students there are. To count individual students, use dua siswa or dua orang siswa. This group-versus-member distinction matters more than the superficial resemblance to a classifier.
For the separate ways Indonesian marks multiple individuals rather than a collective unit, see classifier plurality.
Rombongan: a party traveling or attending together
Rombongan typically packages people who travel, arrive, visit, or participate together. A shared journey or event gives the collective its coherence. It is neutral across everyday, journalistic, and formal contexts.
The party of tourists from Surabaya will stay for two nights.
Panitia menyambut tiga rombongan tamu di pintu utama.
The committee welcomed three parties of guests at the main entrance.
We left as one party so that no one would get lost.
Compare rombongan wisatawan with kelompok wisatawan. The first imagines tourists traveling or arriving as one party. The second can simply divide tourists into a group for a task or describe a category in research. English group of tourists can translate either; the real-world organization decides.
Calling an unordered crowd of hostile people a rombongan can sound too neutral or organized. Conversely, gerombolan wisatawan casts tourists as an unruly mass and is insulting unless the speaker deliberately wants that stance.
Kelompok: neutral organization or classification
Kelompok is the broadest neutral option. It can identify a work group, discussion group, demographic category, cluster, or analytically defined set. The members need not travel together, and the word itself carries no praise or blame.
The participants were divided into four groups to discuss different cases.
Kelompok pertama bertugas mencatat data, sedangkan kelompok kedua melakukan wawancara.
The first group is responsible for recording data, while the second conducts interviews.
In this study, respondents are divided into two age groups.
The final example is academic: kelompok creates an analytic category, not a band of people physically standing together. That breadth makes kelompok useful, but not a default replacement for every English collective. A herd of cattle is more naturally kawanan sapi in ordinary description; a travel party is rombongan when joint movement matters.
Kawanan: animals together, people viewed as a pack
Kawanan is the ordinary collective for many animals: cattle, birds, goats, wolves, or other creatures perceived as moving or living together. Indonesian does not require a different collective for every species in the way English contrasts herd, flock, and pack.
A herd of cattle sheltered under a tree when the rain began.
We saw two flocks of birds flying in different directions.
Peternak memisahkan kawanan kambing itu dari sapi-sapinya.
The farmer separated that herd of goats from his cattle.
With animals, kawanan is normally descriptive; context may still make the group threatening. With humans, it commonly carries a negative, dehumanizing comparison to a pack, especially with offenders: kawanan pencuri. Do not use it for a neutral group of colleagues or guests.
The police arrested a gang of thieves that had operated in several markets.
Gerombolan: an unordered or threatening band
Gerombolan presents members as clustering or acting en masse, with little emphasis on legitimate internal organization. For humans, it very often expresses negative evaluation: a gang, band of raiders, or disruptive mob. This is not a polite neutral synonym of kelompok.
A gang of armed robbers blocked the truck on a deserted road.
Warga diminta menjauh ketika gerombolan itu mulai merusak toko.
Residents were asked to stay away when the mob began damaging shops.
In that old news report, an armed band was described as attacking the village at night.
The third example is journalistic/historical. Gerombolan has a history of use for hostile irregular groups, so it can carry ideological weight. Use a more specific neutral noun—kelompok, rombongan, tim, komunitas—when condemnation is not intended.
For animals, gerombolan is possible when the speaker pictures a mass or swarm-like cluster, often disorderly or threatening. Kawanan remains the safer neutral animal collective.
Contrasting all four
| Phrase | Natural interpretation | Stance |
|---|---|---|
| rombongan wisatawan | tourists traveling or arriving together | neutral |
| kelompok wisatawan | a subgroup/category of tourists | neutral |
| kawanan sapi / burung | a herd or flock | normally neutral for animals |
| gerombolan perampok | a threatening criminal band | pejorative |
With larger numerals, keep words separate: dua rombongan wisatawan, tiga kelompok siswa, empat kawanan burung. Do not pluralize the collective head merely because it follows a numeral. The fused forms with se-—serombongan, sekelompok, sekawanan, segerombolan—all take solid spelling.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating every English “group” with kelompok
Incorrect claim — shared travel often makes rombongan the natural collective.
✅ Rombongan wisatawan itu tiba dengan bus pariwisata.
That party of tourists arrived by tour bus.
2. Using rombongan for an ordinary animal herd
❌ Serombongan sapi sedang merumput di dekat sungai.
Awkward — rombongan normally packages a traveling or attending party of people.
✅ Sekawanan sapi sedang merumput di dekat sungai.
A herd of cattle is grazing near the river.
3. Using gerombolan as a neutral human collective
❌ Segerombolan guru mengikuti lokakarya pendidikan.
Incorrect for a neutral description — gerombolan disparages the teachers as a disorderly band.
✅ Sekelompok guru mengikuti lokakarya pendidikan.
A group of teachers attended an education workshop.
4. Separating se- or doubling a counted head
Incorrect — the counted head stays invariant, and sekawanan is written solid.
Two groups of students and a flock of birds were visible from the hall.

- Rombongan highlights shared travel, arrival, or attendance.
- Kelompok neutrally organizes or categorizes members.
- Kawanan is broad for animal herds, flocks, and packs but usually negative for humans.
- Gerombolan often condemns a disorderly or threatening band.
- Write sekelompok and the other se- forms solid; write higher numerals separately.
