Distributive and Approximate Numbers

An ordinary numeral answers “how many?” Dua peserta means that two participants are relevant. Indonesian can reshape the same numeral to answer different questions: dua-dua means “in recurring groups of two,” berdua means “the two together,” belasan locates a number in the teens, and sekitar dua puluh places an estimate near twenty.

This page is a decision guide to those meanings. It does not reproduce classifier inventories or survey general reduplication theory; the form system is mapped on the numeral-reduplication page. The central insight is morphological: copying, affixing, or placing a separate quantifier around a numeral changes what part of the counting situation the speaker profiles.

One numeral, several operations

FormQuestion answeredCore meaning

peserta masuk dua-duaIn units of how many?participants enter two at a time
mereka berduaWhich participant group?the two of them together
sekitar dua puluh pesertaApproximately how many?about twenty participants
puluhan pesertaWhat rough magnitude?dozens/tens of participants
separuh pesertaWhat fraction of the set?half of the participants

Dua teknisi memeriksa mesin utama.

Two technicians inspected the main machine.

Para teknisi masuk dua-dua karena ruang mesinnya sempit.

The technicians entered two at a time because the machine room was narrow.

Kedua teknisi itu bekerja berdua sampai pemeriksaan selesai.

Those two technicians worked together as a pair until the inspection was complete.

The first sentence counts. The second partitions a larger set. The third identifies a particular pair and presents them as one participant group. English can reuse two across all three, so learners must attend to the Indonesian structure.

Satu-satu: individual distribution or sequence

Satu-satu distributes members of a larger set into single units. Depending on the event, it can mean “one by one,” “one at a time,” or “one each” (neutral/informal).

Silakan maju satu-satu untuk mengambil kartu ujian.

Please come forward one at a time to collect your exam card.

Saya cocokkan nomor seri itu satu-satu dengan daftar inventaris.

I matched the serial numbers one by one against the inventory list.

Anak-anak boleh mengambil jeruk satu-satu dari keranjang.

The children may take one orange each from the basket.

The event supplies the interpretation. Maju satu-satu is necessarily sequential; mengambil jeruk satu-satu can describe allocation of one item to each child. When allocation must be legally or procedurally unambiguous, use masing-masing mendapat satu.

Masing-masing penerima mendapat satu kode akses yang berbeda.

Each recipient receives one different access code.

Satu per satu is a clear neutral alternative, while satu demi satu often foregrounds an unfolding series.

Petugas memeriksa koper penumpang satu per satu.

The officer checked the passengers' suitcases one by one.

Satu demi satu nama pemenang muncul di layar.

One by one, the winners' names appeared on the screen.

💡
A copied numeral presupposes a larger set. Satu-satu does not say that only one thing exists; it says that the set is handled in units of one.

Dua-dua and larger recurring groups

Dua-dua partitions a set into pairs or regulates a process two at a time. Tiga-tiga and empat-empat can likewise create recurring groups, although longer values become less convenient and an explicit kelompok phrase is often clearer.

Peserta lokakarya duduk dua-dua untuk saling memeriksa jawaban.

The workshop participants sat in pairs to check each other's answers.

Petugas mempersilakan pengunjung naik tiga-tiga ke panggung.

The staff invited visitors onto the stage three at a time.

Peserta dipersilakan masuk empat-empat agar antrean bergerak lebih cepat.

Participants were invited to enter four at a time so the queue would move faster.

These forms do not state the total number. Seratus peserta masuk dua-dua still involves one hundred participants; dua-dua controls the size of each entering subgroup.

For a formal group assignment, spell out both the number of groups and their membership:

Bagi kelas menjadi enam kelompok; masing-masing kelompok berisi lima orang.

Divide the class into six groups; each group should contain five people.

Setiap regu mengirim tiga wakil, lalu para wakil berdiskusi bertiga-tiga.

Each team sends three representatives, and then the representatives discuss in groups of three.

The semicolon prevents masing-masing from being misread as distributing six. It distributes the five-person composition across each of the six groups.

Masing-masing: map a value onto every member

Masing-masing means “each” or “respectively.” It identifies a set and distributes a property, amount, or responsibility across its members. The expression itself is conventionally hyphenated.

Masing-masing kelompok memilih seorang pencatat.

Each group chooses a note-taker.

Lina dan Bagas masing-masing menerima Rp75.000 dan Rp90.000.

Lina and Bagas received 75,000 and 90,000 rupiah, respectively.

Empat cabang tersebut masing-masing memiliki dua ruang pelatihan.

Those four branches each have two training rooms.

In the “respectively” pattern, order matters: Lina maps to the first amount and Bagas to the second. In the “each” pattern, masing-masing may precede the distributed noun phrase or occur after an already established plural subject.

Panitia memberi masing-masing peserta dua lembar stiker.

The committee gave each participant two sheets of stickers.

Do not add reduplication merely because distribution is plural. Masing-masing peserta, not masing-masing peserta-peserta, is the neutral standard form.

Berdua: one participant group of two

Berdua gathers exactly two contextually identified participants into one group: “the two together,” “both of us/them,” or “alone together,” depending on context. It does not iterate pairs across a crowd.

Saya dan Nita akan menjaga meja pendaftaran berdua.

Nita and I will staff the registration desk together, just the two of us.

Mereka berdua sepakat menunda perjalanan sampai cuaca membaik.

The two of them agreed to postpone the trip until the weather improved.

Boleh kami berdua menggunakan satu komputer?

May the two of us share one computer?

Compare berdua-dua, in which ber- attaches once around the copied base and a larger set forms repeated pairs.

Setelah pengarahan, para relawan menyebar berdua-dua ke setiap blok.

After the briefing, the volunteers spread out in pairs to each block.

The spelling reflects the bracketing: ber- + dua-dua → berdua-dua, not berdua-berdua.

Sekitar gives a central estimate

Sekitar + numeral means “about/approximately.” It presents the numeral as the center of a reasonable estimate rather than an exact count.

Sekitar delapan puluh orang menunggu di luar gedung.

About eighty people were waiting outside the building.

Perjalanan dari dermaga memakan waktu sekitar dua setengah jam.

The trip from the pier takes about two and a half hours.

Kami membutuhkan sekitar tiga puluh kursi tambahan.

We need approximately thirty additional chairs.

The position is flexible when the estimated phrase remains clear: sekitar dua jam and dua jam sekitar itu are not equivalent; the second is not a normal approximation. Keep sekitar directly before the quantity or use kira-kira (informal/neutral).

Kira-kira ada seratus penonton di halaman sekolah.

There were roughly a hundred spectators in the school yard. (informal/neutral)

Belasan and puluhan name rough magnitude bands

Belasan derives from belas and refers to a value in the teens, often without committing to the exact number. With age, it means “in one's teens.”

Belasan siswa masih berada di perpustakaan setelah jam tutup.

Between eleven and nineteen students were still in the library after closing time.

Penyanyi itu mulai tampil di panggung ketika usianya masih belasan tahun.

That singer began performing on stage while still in their teens.

Anaknya yang berusia belasan tahun sudah pandai mengatur jadwal sendiri.

Their teenage child is already good at managing their own schedule.

Puluhan gives a magnitude of tens, often translated “dozens” or “tens of.” It is imprecise and normally larger than belasan.

Puluhan kendaraan terpaksa berhenti karena jalan tertutup.

Dozens of vehicles had to stop because the road was closed.

Panitia menerima puluhan usulan dalam dua hari.

The committee received dozens of proposals in two days.

For an age decade, dua puluhan means “in the twenties.” With digits, EYD V uses a hyphen before -an: 20-an.

Sebagian besar anggota komunitas itu berusia dua puluhan.

Most members of that community are in their twenties.

Peserta berusia 20-an ditempatkan dalam kelompok diskusi yang sama.

Participants in their twenties were placed in the same discussion group.

Puluhan and sekitar dua puluh are not interchangeable. The first gives a broad order of magnitude; the second centers the estimate near twenty.

Fractions select part of an established group

Separuh and setengah mean half. Sepertiga means one third, while dua pertiga means two thirds. Se- attaches to the word-form denominator; a numerator larger than one remains separate.

Separuh peserta memilih sesi pagi, dan separuh lainnya memilih sesi sore.

Half the participants chose the morning session, and the other half chose the afternoon session.

Setengah dari jumlah kursi disediakan untuk tamu undangan.

Half of the seats are reserved for invited guests.

Sepertiga anggota regu bertugas di pintu masuk.

One third of the team members are assigned to the entrance.

Dua pertiga kelas sudah mengumpulkan tugas sebelum batas waktu.

Two thirds of the class submitted the assignment before the deadline.

With a clearly established whole, dari is optional after many fraction expressions. Include it when the boundary of a long noun phrase needs help: setengah dari jumlah kursi yang tersedia.

Orthography summary

Write genuine copied numerals with a hyphen: satu-satu, dua-dua, tiga-tiga. Write masing-masing with its established hyphen. Attach productive word-form material: berdua, belasan, puluhan, separuh, sepertiga. With digits plus -an, retain the hyphen: 20-an, 5.000-an. Informal dua2 is unsuitable in edited text (informal/nonstandard).

Common Mistakes

1. Copying a numeral for a simple cardinal count

❌ Saya memesan dua-dua kursi untuk konser besok.

Incorrect for the intended total of two seats—dua-dua implies recurring pairs or distribution.

✅ Saya memesan dua kursi untuk konser besok.

I booked two seats for tomorrow's concert.

2. Using berdua for a crowd divided into pairs

❌ Semua peserta keluar berdua melalui lorong sempit itu.

Incorrect for repeated pairs—berdua presents one contextually identified pair.

✅ Semua peserta keluar berdua-dua melalui lorong sempit itu.

All participants left two by two through that narrow corridor.

3. Treating belasan as an exact twelve

❌ Belasan pengunjung berarti tepat dua belas pengunjung.

Incorrect—belasan identifies a teen-range or roughly teen-sized quantity, not exactly twelve.

✅ Jika jumlah tepatnya dua belas, tulislah dua belas pengunjung.

If the exact number is twelve, write twelve visitors.

4. Reduplicating after masing-masing

❌ Masing-masing kelompok-kelompok menerima jadwal baru.

Incorrect redundant plurality—masing-masing already distributes over the groups.

✅ Masing-masing kelompok menerima jadwal baru yang berbeda.

Each group receives a different new schedule.

5. Removing the required hyphen

❌ Petugas memanggil kami satu satu dari ruang tunggu.

Incorrect edited spelling—the copied numeral is hyphenated.

✅ Petugas memanggil kami satu-satu dari ruang tunggu.

The officer called us one by one from the waiting room.

Key Takeaways

  • Use a cardinal once for a total; copy it to partition a larger set into recurring units.
  • Satu-satu distributes individually, dua-dua creates pairs, and berdua identifies one pair together.
  • Masing-masing maps an amount or responsibility onto each member; order creates the “respectively” reading.
  • Sekitar centers an estimate, while belasan and puluhan give rough magnitude bands.
  • Fractions select part of an established group: separuh, sepertiga, dua pertiga.
