Numeral Reduplication

Copied numerals such as satu-satu and dua-dua do not count objects in the ordinary way. They partition a larger set into units: one person at a time, two people at a time, or multiple groups of a stated size. With ber-, forms such as berdua-dua make the repeated grouping especially explicit.

English often uses one by one, two at a time, or in pairs. The Indonesian copy encodes that distributive grouping. Individual affix paradigms and general classifier syntax remain on dedicated adjacent pages.

Satu-satu: one at a time

Use satu-satu when members of a set act, are inspected, or are handled as successive individual units.

Silakan masuk satu-satu dan tunjukkan kartu peserta.

Please come in one at a time and show your participant card.

Petugas memanggil nama kami satu-satu.

The officer called our names one by one.

Periksa dokumen itu satu-satu sebelum memasukkannya ke map.

Check those documents one by one before putting them in the folder.

The copy does not mean that only one participant exists. It presupposes or evokes a larger set and partitions it into units of one. This is the construction’s central logic.

Para penumpang turun satu-satu karena pintunya sempit.

The passengers got off one at a time because the door was narrow.

Saya membaca pesan yang masuk satu-satu agar tidak ada yang terlewat.

I read the incoming messages one by one so that none would be missed.

A: Semua peserta boleh masuk sekarang? B: Boleh, tetapi masuklah satu-satu.

A: May all the participants enter now? B: Yes, but come in one at a time.

The final instruction satisfies both plurality and distribution: everyone may enter, but the event must proceed in individual turns.

💡
A copied numeral answers “in units of how many?” It does not answer the ordinary question “how many objects are there?”

Satu-satu and one each

In a suitable distribution context, satu-satu can also suggest that members receive one item each. Because this can overlap with “one at a time,” masing-masing satu is clearer when allocation rather than sequence is the only intended meaning.

Ada enam roti kecil, lalu anak-anak mendapat satu-satu.

There were six small bread rolls, and the children got one each.

Ambil satu-satu; jangan ada yang mengambil dua.

Take one each; no one should take two.

Masing-masing peserta mendapat satu buku catatan.

Each participant receives one notebook.

The copied form views the recipients as a distributed set. Masing-masing peserta mendapat satu explicitly links one unit to each member and avoids any possible sequential reading.

Dua-dua: in pairs or two at a time

Dua-dua partitions the relevant people or things into groups of two. It does not mean the cardinal phrase dua orang “two people” by itself.

Anak-anak berbaris dua-dua di depan kelas.

The children lined up in pairs in front of the classroom.

Masuklah dua-dua agar pemeriksaan tiket lebih cepat.

Enter two at a time so the ticket check goes faster.

Para relawan bekerja dua-dua untuk mengangkat kotak-kotak besar itu.

The volunteers worked in pairs to lift the large boxes.

Burung-burung itu terbang dua-dua di atas sawah.

The birds flew in pairs over the rice fields.

The larger population remains plural; dua-dua specifies the recurring size of each subgroup. Context may foreground simultaneous pairs or a succession of pairs.

A: Kami harus bekerja sendiri? B: Tidak, kerjakan latihan ini dua-dua.

A: Do we have to work alone? B: No, do this exercise in pairs.

For a single pair rather than repeated pairing, use berdua or an ordinary cardinal expression.

Berdua versus berdua-dua

Berdua presents one group consisting of two participants: “the two together.” Berdua-dua presents a larger set acting in multiple pairs: “two by two.”

Kami berdua menunggu di lobi.

The two of us are waiting in the lobby.

Setelah pintu dibuka, para tamu masuk berdua-dua.

After the doors opened, the guests entered two by two.

Mira dan Santi pulang berdua setelah rapat.

Mira and Santi went home together after the meeting.

Peserta lomba berjalan berdua-dua menuju garis awal.

The contestants walked two by two toward the starting line.

The contrast is not just visual length. Berdua gathers exactly two relevant people into one collective unit. Berdua-dua repeatedly applies the pair size across a larger population.

The same pattern is established for bertiga-tiga and berempat-empat.

Siswa duduk bertiga-tiga untuk mendiskusikan setiap soal.

The students sat in groups of three to discuss each question.

Petugas mengizinkan pengunjung masuk berempat-empat.

The staff allowed visitors to enter four at a time.

These are established distributive group forms, not permission to attach ber- to every copied numeral. The productive details of ber- belong to the affix guide.

💡
Compare the size of the whole relevant group with the recurring subgroup: kami berdua is one pair; para tamu masuk berdua-dua is a crowd partitioned into pairs.

Satu per satu and satu demi satu

Indonesian also uses per and demi between identical numerals. Satu per satu is a clear neutral alternative to satu-satu. Satu demi satu emphasizes an unfolding sequence, often with a narrative sense of one after another.

Perawat memeriksa pasien satu per satu.

The nurse examined the patients one by one.

Satu demi satu lampu di rumah itu padam.

One by one, the lights in that house went out.

Berkas-berkas lama itu dipindai dua per dua untuk menghemat waktu.

The old files were scanned two at a time to save time.

These are phrases with spaces, not hyphenated reduplicated words. Satu-satu, satu per satu, and satu demi satu overlap, but the last most strongly turns the sequence into a narrative progression.

Ordinary counting and frequency use different structures

For an ordinary exact quantity, use the cardinal once before the counted expression. Do not copy it merely because English has a plural noun.

Saya membeli dua tiket untuk konser besok.

I bought two tickets for tomorrow’s concert.

Tiga mahasiswa menunggu dosen di luar ruangan.

Three students are waiting for the lecturer outside the room.

To count repetitions of an event, use kali “times,” not copied numerals.

Saya sudah membaca laporan itu dua kali.

I have read that report twice.

Bel berbunyi tiga kali sebelum pintu dibuka.

The bell rang three times before the door was opened.

Dua tiket counts tickets, dua kali counts event occurrences, and masuk dua-dua partitions entrants into pairs. English can use “two” in all three, but Indonesian requires the structure appropriate to the type of counting.

Bracketing and orthography

Full numeral copying takes a hyphen: satu-satu, dua-dua. In berdua-dua, prefix ber- appears once and attaches to the copied numeral base: ber- + dua-dua. The finished spelling is not berdua-berdua or ber dua-dua.

Rombongan itu menyeberangi jembatan berdua-dua.

The group crossed the bridge two by two.

Never replace the copy with digit 2 in edited prose: dua2 is a nonstandard digital shortcut (informal). The reduplication overview maps the wider system, and the hyphen guide gives the spelling rule.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying a numeral for an ordinary cardinal count

❌ Saya membeli dua-dua tiket untuk pertandingan.

Incorrect for the intended simple count ‘two tickets’ — the copy suggests distribution in pairs.

✅ Saya membeli dua tiket untuk pertandingan.

I bought two tickets for the match.

2. Using copied numerals to count event repetitions

❌ Saya menelepon kantor itu dua-dua kemarin.

Incorrect for ‘called twice’ — dua-dua partitions participants or items into pairs.

✅ Saya menelepon kantor itu dua kali kemarin.

I called that office twice yesterday.

3. Using berdua for several successive pairs

❌ Ratusan tamu masuk berdua melalui pintu kecil itu.

Incorrect for the intended repeated pairing — berdua presents one pair acting together.

✅ Ratusan tamu masuk berdua-dua melalui pintu kecil itu.

Hundreds of guests entered two by two through that small door.

4. Repeating the visible prefix

❌ Para pemain berjalan berdua-berdua menuju lapangan.

Incorrect bracketing — ber- appears once around the copied numeral base.

✅ Para pemain berjalan berdua-dua menuju lapangan.

The players walked two by two toward the field.

5. Omitting the hyphen or using digit 2

❌ Panggil peserta satu2 dari daftar ini.

Incorrect edited spelling — write both numeral copies with a hyphen.

✅ Panggil peserta satu-satu dari daftar ini.

Call the participants one by one from this list.
