Affixes Around Full Reduplication

Affixed reduplication is governed by structure, not by visual duplication. In berjalan-jalan, the copied domain is jalan-jalan and ber- appears once outside it. In rumah-rumahan, -an closes the repeated base. In buku-bukunya, the clitic -nya attaches to the whole reduplicated noun.

This page teaches scope and bracketing across noun, verb, adjective, and clitic cases. It does not attempt to replace the individual semantic paradigms of each affix or the general classifier system.

Read the brackets before copying

Use brackets as an analysis tool:

[outer material [copied base-base] outer material]

The brackets are never written in ordinary Indonesian. They show which material is repeated and which material has scope over the resulting form.

Kami berjalan-jalan di tepi pantai setelah sarapan.

We took a stroll along the beach after breakfast.

Anak-anak membuat rumah-rumahan dari kardus bekas.

The children made a toy house out of used cardboard.

Buku-bukunya masih tersimpan rapi di rumah lama.

His/her books are still neatly stored in the old house.

The visible prefix, suffix, or clitic is not copied twice because it is not inside the copy domain. English spelling offers little guidance here: repeating “walked-walked” or “houses-houses” would not reveal Indonesian morphological scope.

💡
Find the lexical base first. Copy only the domain required by the established construction; then attach outer morphology once.

Noun case: rumah-rumahan

The suffix -an outside a copied noun can create a resemblance, toy, imitation, or related collective meaning. The exact interpretation is lexical and construction-specific.

StepAnalysisOrdinary spelling
  1. base
rumahrumah
  1. copy the base
[rumah-rumah]rumah-rumah
  1. add outer suffix
[[rumah-rumah]-an]rumah-rumahan

Dina membuat rumah-rumahan untuk kucingnya di teras.

Dina made a little house for her cat on the veranda.

Untuk pameran sekolah, murid membuat rumah-rumahan tradisional dari stik es krim.

For the school exhibition, the pupils made miniature traditional houses from ice-pop sticks.

Rumah-rumahan is not the ordinary plural of rumah. Use rumah-rumah when you simply foreground multiple houses. The outer -an changes the construction's meaning.

Other common noun patterns show the same surface bracketing:

Adik bermain mobil-mobilan di lantai ruang tamu.

My younger sibling is playing with toy cars on the living-room floor.

Warung itu menyediakan buah-buahan segar setiap pagi.

That food stall provides assorted fresh fruit every morning.

Dokter menyarankan pasien makan lebih banyak sayur-sayuran.

The doctor advised the patient to eat more vegetables.

Mobil-mobilan is toy-like; buah-buahan and sayur-sayuran commonly present categories or assortments. There is no one English suffix that captures all -an outcomes, so meaning must be learned alongside structure.

Verb case: berjalan-jalan

For berjalan-jalan, the pedagogical bracketing places ber- around a copied base:

StepAnalysisOrdinary spelling
  1. base
jalanjalan
  1. copy the base
[jalan-jalan]jalan-jalan
  1. add prefix
[ber-[jalan-jalan]]berjalan-jalan

Wisatawan berjalan-jalan di sekitar kota tua sampai sore.

The tourists strolled around the old town until late afternoon.

Kami berlari-lari kecil untuk menghangatkan badan.

We jogged around lightly to warm up.

Sejak pagi saya mencari-cari kartu akses yang hilang.

I’ve been looking all over for the missing access card since this morning.

The constructions do not merely repeat identical completed verbs. Standard forms are berjalan-jalan, not berjalan-berjalan, and mencari-cari, not mencari-mencari. Their meanings may involve leisurely activity, repeated attempts, continuation, or diffuseness; see iterative verbs.

Some duration expressions also show a single prefix outside a copied noun base:

Mereka menunggu berhari-hari tanpa kepastian.

They waited for days without any certainty.

Mereka tinggal di pengungsian berminggu-minggu setelah banjir.

They stayed at the evacuation shelter for weeks after the flood.

The visible ber- is not duplicated even though the construction describes an extended series.

Adjective case: kemerah-merahan

The circumfix-like frame ke-...-an can surround copied adjective material and produce an approximate property: kemerah-merahan “reddish,” kekuning-kuningan “yellowish,” kebiru-biruan “bluish.”

StepAnalysisOrdinary spelling
  1. base
merahmerah
  1. copy the base
[merah-merah]merah-merah
  1. add the frame
[ke-[merah-merah]-an]kemerah-merahan

Langit menjadi kemerah-merahan menjelang matahari terbenam.

The sky became reddish toward sunset.

Air kolam tampak kebiru-biruan karena pantulan cahaya.

The pond water looks bluish because of the reflected light.

Daun tanaman itu mulai kekuning-kuningan karena kekurangan air.

The plant’s leaves are starting to look yellowish from lack of water.

The construction weakens or approximates the color. It does not mean that several red, blue, or yellow things exist. Copying the already derived form as kemerahan-kemerahan selects the wrong domain and yields no standard equivalent of this meaning.

Related forms can be highly lexicalized:

Perusahaan mengadakan promosi besar-besaran menjelang akhir tahun.

The company ran a massive promotion toward the end of the year.

Petugas bekerja habis-habisan untuk memulihkan jaringan.

The officers worked flat out to restore the network.

Their meanings are not predictable from a bare bracket diagram alone. Bracketing explains spelling; the lexicon still supplies conventional meaning.

Clitic case: buku-bukunya

The possessive or discourse clitic -nya attaches after the whole repeated noun. It is not part of what is copied.

StepAnalysisOrdinary spelling
  1. base
bukubuku
  1. copy the base
[buku-buku]buku-buku
  1. attach clitic
[[buku-buku]-nya]buku-bukunya

Buku-bukunya sudah dipindahkan ke rak paling atas.

His/her books have been moved to the top shelf.

Anak-anaknya bersekolah di kota yang berbeda.

His/her children attend school in different cities.

Foto-fotonya tersimpan otomatis di penyimpanan awan.

His/her photos are saved automatically to cloud storage.

Forms such as bukunya-bukunya visually repeat the clitic-bearing word and are not the neutral construction for “his/her books.” The standard form lets -nya take scope over the plural set.

The same outer attachment principle applies to -ku and -mu when the intended construction is licensed:

Teman-temanku datang lebih awal untuk membantu.

My friends came early to help.

Catatan-catatanmu sudah saya masukkan ke map biru.

I’ve put your notes in the blue folder.

Copy domain is a morphological choice

Do not assume that spelling always follows the largest visible word. Compare:

Intended constructionCopy domainResult
strolljalanberjalan-jalan
look repeatedly/all overcarimencari-cari
reddishmerahkemerah-merahan
his/her booksbukubuku-bukunya

There are genuine complexities and competing linguistic analyses in Indonesian morphology. Learners do not need to settle every theoretical bracket, but they must learn the established surface form and avoid copying affixes by English-style visual analogy.

💡
Bracketing predicts where the hyphen goes and what attaches once; it does not guarantee that every imaginable bracket produces a real Indonesian word.

Orthography

Write the reduplicated material with a hyphen and keep outer material attached: rumah-rumahan, berjalan-jalan, kemerah-merahan, buku-bukunya. Never use digit 2 in edited prose. Consult affix spelling for nasal allomorphs and clitic spelling for -ku, -mu, and -nya.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying a prefix twice

❌ Kami berjalan-berjalan di taman kota.

Incorrect — ber- scopes over the copied jalan base and appears once.

✅ Kami berjalan-jalan di taman kota.

We took a stroll in the city park.

2. Copying the clitic with each half

❌ Bukunya-bukunya masih ada di dalam kotak.

Incorrect for neutral ‘his/her books’ — -nya attaches after the complete reduplicated noun.

✅ Buku-bukunya masih ada di dalam kotak.

His/her books are still in the box.

3. Copying an already derived adjective

❌ Langit terlihat kemerahan-kemerahan saat senja.

Incorrect form for ‘reddish’ — the ke-...-an frame surrounds copied merah.

✅ Langit terlihat kemerah-merahan saat senja.

The sky looks reddish at dusk.

4. Detaching a suffix

❌ Anak-anak membuat rumah-rumah an dari kertas.

Incorrect spelling — outer -an attaches directly to the copied base.

✅ Anak-anak membuat rumah-rumahan dari kertas.

The children made toy houses out of paper.

5. Replacing the copy domain with digit 2

❌ Foto2nya sudah saya unggah ke folder bersama.

Incorrect edited spelling — write the full copied base before attached -nya.

✅ Foto-fotonya sudah saya unggah ke folder bersama.

I’ve uploaded his/her photos to the shared folder.

Key Takeaways

  • Morphological structure determines which base is copied and which material appears outside it.
  • Use berjalan-jalan, not berjalan-berjalan; kemerah-merahan, not kemerahan-kemerahan.
  • Outer -an creates forms such as rumah-rumahan, while clitics follow the whole set in buku-bukunya.
  • Bracketing explains spelling, but conventional meaning must still be learned construction by construction.
