se-...-nya with Repeated Adjectives

The template se- + repeated adjective + -nya marks a limit: the highest degree attainable, the best manner possible, a boundary such as “at latest,” or a concessive meaning such as “however good.” Sebaik-baiknya and setinggi-tingginya therefore do not behave like ordinary adjective superlatives inside noun phrases.

This page explains the shared limit logic and its conventional extensions. Individual affix paradigms and general classifier syntax remain on dedicated adjacent pages.

Forming the template

The prefix se- attaches to the first copy, the two adjective bases are joined by a hyphen, and -nya attaches to the second copy.

BaseAnalysisStandard formTypical meaning
baikse- + baik-baik + -nyasebaik-baiknyaas well as possible
tinggise- + tinggi-tinggi + -nyasetinggi-tingginyaas high as possible; at most this high
cepatse- + cepat-cepat + -nyasecepat-cepatnyaas quickly as possible; at the earliest
lambatse- + lambat-lambat + -nyaselambat-lambatnyaat the latest

The plus signs show analysis only. Ordinary writing uses the solid outer affixes and one internal hyphen: sebaik-baiknya, never se baik-baik nya.

Kami akan menyelesaikan tugas ini sebaik-baiknya.

We will complete this task as well as possible.

Angkat bendera itu setinggi-tingginya.

Raise that flag as high as possible.

Petugas berusaha membuka jalur evakuasi secepat-cepatnya.

The officers are trying to open the evacuation route as quickly as possible.

💡
Look for a limit, not merely a high degree: the form asks how far the property can reasonably go in this event or context.

Maximum attainable degree

The most productive reading is “to the greatest degree possible.” The construction normally modifies an action or sets a degree boundary rather than selecting one entity as “the most adjective.”

Penata panggung menghias aula itu seindah-indahnya untuk resepsi malam ini.

The stage designer decorated the hall as beautifully as possible for tonight’s reception.

Kami menghemat air sebanyak-banyaknya selama musim kemarau.

We conserve as much water as possible during the dry season.

Tim medis bekerja secepat-cepatnya tanpa mengabaikan keselamatan pasien.

The medical team worked as quickly as possible without neglecting patient safety.

Pemain itu melompat setinggi-tingginya untuk meraih bola.

The player jumped as high as possible to reach the ball.

English often adds possible. Indonesian builds that upper-limit reading into the morphological template. The practical maximum still depends on circumstances: secepat-cepatnya does not license unsafe work in a clause that explicitly preserves patient safety.

Best possible manner

With evaluative adjectives, the limit is qualitative. Sebaik-baiknya means doing something to the best attainable standard, not identifying “the best thing” in a set.

Gunakan waktu pelatihan ini sebaik-baiknya.

Make the best possible use of this training time.

Panitia menyambut para tamu seramah-ramahnya.

The committee welcomed the guests as warmly as possible.

Jelaskan prosedurnya sejelas-jelasnya agar tidak terjadi kesalahpahaman.

Explain the procedure as clearly as possible so that no misunderstanding occurs.

Kami menangani arsip itu secermat-cermatnya selama proses pemindahan.

We handled the archive as carefully as possible during the move.

Some speakers prefer an analytic phrase such as dengan sebaik-baiknya or dengan sangat hati-hati, depending on the verb and style. The template is productive, but collocational naturalness still matters; not every adjective yields an equally common form.

Tim akan melaksanakan amanat tersebut dengan sebaik-baiknya.

The team will carry out that mandate to the best of its ability. (formal)

Numerical and temporal boundaries

With a measure or time expression, the template can set an extreme permissible boundary. The direction comes from the adjective.

Pagar itu setinggi-tingginya dua meter.

The fence may be at most two meters high.

Saya baru bisa tiba secepat-cepatnya pukul sembilan.

The earliest I can arrive is nine o’clock.

Formulir harus dikirim selambat-lambatnya hari Jumat.

The form must be sent by Friday at the latest. (formal)

Rapat dapat dimulai jika hadir sekurang-kurangnya sepuluh peserta.

The meeting may begin if at least ten participants are present. (formal)

Secepat-cepatnya pukul sembilan establishes the earliest possible boundary: nine, not before. Selambat-lambatnya hari Jumat establishes the latest permitted boundary. These conventional time readings can look opposite in English, but both locate an endpoint at an extreme of the relevant scale.

Concessive degree: even at the limit

When the template frames a clause, it can mean “however/no matter how adjective.” The following assertion holds even when the property reaches its favorable or unfavorable limit.

Sebaik-baiknya rencana, pelaksanaannya tetap perlu dievaluasi.

However good a plan is, its implementation still needs to be evaluated.

Sepandai-pandainya seseorang, ia tetap bisa melakukan kesalahan.

No matter how clever someone is, they can still make mistakes.

Setinggi-tingginya jabatan seseorang, ia tetap wajib menaati hukum.

However high a person’s position is, they must still obey the law.

Sekuat-kuatnya bahan itu, panas berlebihan dapat merusaknya.

However strong that material is, excessive heat can damage it.

The fronted phrase forms a concessive frame and is followed by a comma. It does not directly modify a single action as manner. Compare Kerjakan sebaik-baiknya “Do it as well as possible” with Sebaik-baiknya rencana, ... “However good the plan...”

💡
The same upper-limit idea supports two readings: reach the limit in an action, or assert that something remains true even at that limit.

Fixed and conventional forms

Several members occur so frequently that their English equivalents should be learned directly.

FormConventional useRegister
selambat-lambatnyaat the latestformal/administrative
sekurang-kurangnyaat leastneutral/formal
setidak-tidaknyaat least, at any rateformal
sebesar-besarnyaas large/much as possibleformal/neutral

Peserta wajib hadir selambat-lambatnya tiga puluh menit sebelum acara.

Participants must arrive no later than thirty minutes before the event. (formal)

Setidak-tidaknya, beri kami waktu untuk membaca dokumen itu.

At least give us time to read that document. (formal)

Pemerintah daerah berupaya memberi manfaat sebesar-besarnya bagi masyarakat.

The regional government seeks to provide the greatest possible benefit to the public. (formal)

Conventional meanings are not always the sum of an ordinary adjective and a generic rule. Sekurang-kurangnya functions as a lower-bound marker “at least,” while selambat-lambatnya is a deadline marker.

Sebaiknya is not sebaik-baiknya

The unreduplicated sebaiknya commonly means “should; it would be better to.” Sebaik-baiknya means “as well as possible” or, in a concessive frame, “however good.”

Sebaiknya Anda menyimpan salinan dokumen ini.

You should keep a copy of this document.

Simpan dokumen asli itu sebaik-baiknya.

Keep that original document as safely/well as possible.

This difference is lexical and grammatical, not optional emphasis. Reduplication changes the construction.

Cepat-cepatnya versus secepat-cepatnya

Cepat-cepat is an ordinary manner expression meaning “hurriedly/quickly.” For the standard maximum template “as quickly as possible,” retain initial se-: secepat-cepatnya. The form cepat-cepatnya without se- does not instantiate the standard se-...-nya template and should not replace it in careful writing.

Dia cepat-cepat menutup jendela ketika hujan mulai turun.

She quickly closed the window when it started raining.

Mohon kirim hasil pemeriksaan itu secepat-cepatnya.

Please send the examination results as quickly as possible.

The shorter secepatnya also means “as soon as possible” and is extremely common. It is a different, unreduplicated form.

Tolong hubungi saya secepatnya setelah Anda menerima surat itu.

Please contact me as soon as possible after you receive the letter.

Not an ordinary superlative noun phrase

To select the tallest building or best proposal in a set, use paling or ter-, not this limit template.

Itu gedung tertinggi di kota ini.

That is the tallest building in this city.

Panitia memilih usul yang paling baik.

The committee chose the best proposal.

By contrast, angkat setinggi-tingginya modifies the degree of raising. The superlative page treats set selection.

Orthography

Attach se- and -nya to the repeated base, leaving one internal hyphen: sebaik-baiknya, setinggi-tingginya, secepat-cepatnya. Never write digit 2 in edited prose. The structure follows the bracketing principles on affixed reduplication.

Common Mistakes

1. Using the limit template as a noun superlative

❌ Itu gedung setinggi-tingginya di Jakarta.

Incorrect for ‘the tallest building’ — this template does not select one noun from a set.

✅ Itu gedung yang paling tinggi di Jakarta.

That is the tallest building in Jakarta.

2. Dropping se- from the maximum form

❌ Kirim dokumen itu cepat-cepatnya.

Incorrect careful form for ‘as quickly as possible’ — the maximum template requires se-.

✅ Kirim dokumen itu secepat-cepatnya.

Send that document as quickly as possible.

3. Separating the outer affixes

❌ Kerjakan tugas itu se baik-baik nya.

Incorrect spelling — se- and -nya attach around the hyphenated repeated base.

✅ Kerjakan tugas itu sebaik-baiknya.

Do that task as well as possible.

4. Confusing advice with best possible manner

❌ Kami akan melaksanakan tugas ini sebaiknya.

Wrong for ‘as well as possible’ — sebaiknya means ‘should/it would be better.’

✅ Kami akan melaksanakan tugas ini sebaik-baiknya.

We will carry out this task as well as possible.

5. Using maximum degree for distribution across a set

❌ Pohon di jalan itu setinggi-tingginya.

Wrong for ‘the trees are all tall’ — the limit template does not express distributive plurality here.

✅ Pohon di jalan itu tinggi-tinggi.

The trees on that road are all tall.

Key Takeaways

  • Se- + repeated adjective + -nya expresses an attainable maximum, best manner, boundary, or concessive limit.
  • Learn fixed readings such as selambat-lambatnya “at latest” and sekurang-kurangnya “at least.”
  • Use secepat-cepatnya, not careful-standard cepat-cepatnya, for “as quickly as possible.”
  • Do not use the template as an ordinary superlative noun phrase; use paling or ter- for set selection.
