Concessive Clauses

A concessive construction acknowledges a fact that would normally favor one outcome, then asserts that the opposite or unexpected outcome persists. In Meskipun hujan deras, acara tetap berlangsung, the rain creates an expectation of cancellation; tetap announces that continuation survives that obstacle.

This division of labor is central: the subordinate marker introduces the concession, while the main clause often contains tetap, masih, or another persistence expression. This page analyzes the clause relationship and register choices rather than inventorying every conjunction or reteaching simple sentences.

The subordination guide explains the broader clause-order pattern. This page focuses on what makes the relation specifically concessive: an expectation is acknowledged and then defeated.

Concession plus persistence

The most transparent architecture is:

concessive marker + obstacle, main clause + tetap + outcome

Walaupun jalanan macet, kami tetap tiba sebelum acara dimulai.

Although the roads were congested, we still arrived before the event began.

Meskipun harga bahan naik, warung itu tetap mempertahankan porsi makanannya.

Although ingredient prices rose, the food stall kept its portions unchanged.

Kendati bukti yang tersedia terbatas, pengadilan tetap melanjutkan pemeriksaan.

Although the available evidence was limited, the court continued the examination. (formal)

The obstacle is real and acknowledged. This differs from a condition, where the subordinate situation may remain hypothetical. Concession says, in effect, β€œX is true, but X does not produce the expected consequence.”

πŸ’‘
Identify the defeated expectation. If X would normally lead to not-Y, a concessive says β€œX, yet Y.” The grammar can mark X with meskipun and Y's persistence with tetap.

Walaupun and meskipun

Walaupun and meskipun are the broad neutral choices. Both work in speech and writing; meskipun often feels slightly more compact in careful prose.

Walaupun rumahnya kecil, kami merasa nyaman tinggal di sana.

Although the house is small, we feel comfortable living there.

Meskipun belum pernah bertemu, mereka berbicara seperti teman lama.

Although they had never met, they talked like old friends.

Dia tetap datang walaupun sedang kurang sehat.

He or she still came despite feeling unwell.

Rapat tetap dilaksanakan meskipun ketua panitia berhalangan hadir.

The meeting was held even though the committee chair was unable to attend.

The concessive clause may come first or last. Initial position sets the obstacle as a frame and is followed by a comma. A final integrated clause normally takes no comma.

Tetap is common but not obligatory. Sometimes the main predicate itself clearly supplies the unexpected outcome.

Walaupun baru belajar dua bulan, Rika berhasil memenangkan lomba pidato.

Although Rika had studied for only two months, she managed to win the speech competition.

The achievement verb berhasil memenangkan already highlights the expectation reversal. Adding tetap would emphasize persistence rather than success.

One proposition across three registers

Consider one situation: heavy rain would normally cancel an outdoor ceremony, yet it continues.

Kendati hujan turun sangat deras, upacara tetap dilaksanakan sesuai jadwal.

Although the rain was extremely heavy, the ceremony was held as scheduled. (formal)

Walaupun hujannya deras, acaranya tetap jalan.

Even though it was raining hard, the event still went ahead. (conversational)

Sekalipun hujan semakin deras, acara itu tetap tidak akan dibatalkan.

Even if the rain grows heavier, that event still will not be canceled. (emphatic)

The factual status shifts slightly in the emphatic version: sekalipun can mean β€œeven though” for a fact or β€œeven if” for an extreme possibility. Context decides. The formal version uses kendati and passive dilaksanakan; the conversational version uses possessed hujannya/acaranya and predicate jalan (conversational). These are register choices, not different logical relations.

Sekalipun: the extreme case still fails

Sekalipun strengthens the concession by selecting an extreme or maximally unfavorable case: β€œeven though/even if.”

Sekalipun ditawari gaji lebih tinggi, Maya tidak mau meninggalkan kotanya.

Even if offered a higher salary, Maya does not want to leave her city.

Dia tidak akan membuka rahasia itu sekalipun ditekan oleh atasannya.

He or she will not reveal that secret even if pressured by a superior.

Sekalipun semua orang meragukannya, Dito tetap menyelesaikan proyek itu sendiri.

Even though everyone doubted him, Dito still completed the project by himself.

The first two can be irrealis: the offer or pressure need not have happened. The third is naturally factual. Sekalipun therefore emphasizes resistance across possible worlds, while walaupun/meskipun more routinely concede an established fact.

Biarpun and kendati

Biarpun is common in personal, conversational expression (conversational). It can sound determined, intimate, or proverbial.

Biarpun lelah, aku tetap mau menemanimu ke rumah sakit.

Even though I'm tired, I still want to accompany you to the hospital. (conversational)

Biarpun hasilnya belum sempurna, kita sudah membuat kemajuan besar.

Even though the result is not perfect yet, we have made major progress. (conversational)

Kendati belongs mainly to formal and literary prose (formal; literary).

Kendati permohonan diajukan tepat waktu, persetujuan tidak dapat dijamin.

Although the application was submitted on time, approval cannot be guaranteed. (formal)

Kendati hari telah larut, lampu-lampu di pelabuhan masih menyala.

Although the hour was late, the lights at the harbor were still on. (literary)

Do not make kendati the default in casual chat merely because it resembles English β€œalthough.” Likewise, biarpun can look out of place in legal or administrative prose.

Tetap, masih, and juga in the main clause

The main clause can encode several kinds of persistence.

MarkerPersistence expressed
tetapthe outcome holds despite pressure to change
masihthe state or activity continues
jugathe outcome occurs anyway or additionally

Meskipun sudah tengah malam, toko itu masih melayani pelanggan.

Although it was already midnight, the shop was still serving customers.

Walaupun tidak diundang, Rudi datang juga ke acara perpisahan.

Although he was not invited, Rudi came to the farewell event anyway.

Kendati banyak kritik, kebijakan tersebut tetap berlaku sampai akhir tahun.

Despite considerable criticism, the policy remains in force until year-end. (formal)

These markers belong in the main outcome clause. The concessive connector and persistence marker form a distributed pair: one activates an expectation, the other explicitly defeats it.

πŸ’‘
Meskipun X, tetap Y is not redundant. Meskipun classifies X as an obstacle; tetap presents Y as resistant to that obstacle.

Tetapi is not required inside the construction

English β€œalthough X, but Y” is normally considered a redundancy in standard English. Indonesian also needs no automatic tetapi after a concessive clause:

Meskipun lelah, Sinta tetap menyelesaikan laporannya.

Although tired, Sinta still finished her report.

In conversation, speakers do produce heavier patterns such as meskipun X, tetapi Y. Such pairing is understandable, but edited prose normally chooses either a subordinate concession with tetap or coordinate contrast with tetapi.

Sinta lelah, tetapi dia menyelesaikan laporannya.

Sinta was tired, but she finished her report.

The first makes tiredness a subordinate obstacle. The second coordinates two contrasting assertions. Tetapi does not belong β€œinside” the meskipun clause and is never required merely because an English translation contains but.

Concession with negation and scope

Negation can occur in the conceded fact or the persisting outcome.

Walaupun tidak setuju, saya tetap mendengarkan penjelasan mereka sampai selesai.

Although I disagreed, I still listened to their explanation to the end.

Meskipun semua syarat sudah dipenuhi, izin itu belum juga diterbitkan.

Although all requirements had been met, the permit still had not been issued.

Sekalipun dia meminta maaf, saya tidak akan langsung mempercayainya lagi.

Even if he or she apologizes, I will not immediately trust them again.

In the second, belum juga presents a frustrating nonoccurrence despite conditions favoring publication. In the third, tidak belongs to the consequence; it is not part of the concessive condition.

Reduced and verbless concessions

Because Indonesian predicates need no copula, a concessive clause can be compact.

Meskipun mahal, restoran itu selalu penuh pada akhir pekan.

Although expensive, that restaurant is always full on weekends.

Walaupun masih pemula, Dira cepat memahami pekerjaannya.

Although still a beginner, Dira quickly understood her work.

Kendati demikian, penelitian lebih lanjut tetap diperlukan.

Nevertheless, further research is still needed. (formal)

The first has an adjective predicate with an understood subject coreferential with restoran itu. The second has the nominal predicate masih pemula, again with an understood subject coreferential with Dira. Kendati demikian links back to a preceding proposition at discourse level; its comma follows the sentence-opening connector.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating tetapi as mandatory after meskipun

❌ Meskipun hujan berhenti, tetapi pertandingan tetap ditunda.

Overloaded formal structure β€” tetapi is not required after the subordinate concessive.

βœ… Meskipun hujan berhenti, pertandingan tetap ditunda karena lapangan tergenang.

Although the rain stopped, the match remained postponed because the field was flooded.

2. Putting tetap inside the subordinate clause

❌ Walaupun tetap jalanan macet, kami tiba tepat waktu.

Incorrect placement β€” tetap belongs with the persisting outcome, not before the obstacle.

βœ… Walaupun jalanan macet, kami tetap tiba tepat waktu di stasiun.

Although the roads were congested, we still arrived at the station on time.

3. Using kendati as casual everyday default

❌ Kendati aku sangat lelah, ayo kita mengobrol santai.

Register clash β€” formal kendati conflicts with the casual pronoun and invitation.

βœ… Walaupun aku lelah, aku masih mau bertemu sebentar.

Although I'm tired, I still want to meet briefly. (conversational)

4. Omitting the comma after an initial concession

❌ Sekalipun risikonya besar mereka akan mencoba lagi.

Incorrect punctuation β€” close the initial concessive clause with a comma.

βœ… Sekalipun risikonya besar, mereka akan mencoba sekali lagi.

Even if the risk is great, they will try once more.

5. Adding a comma before a final integrated concession

❌ Kami tetap berangkat, walaupun cuacanya kurang baik.

Incorrect neutral punctuation for an integrated final clause.

βœ… Kami tetap berangkat walaupun cuacanya kurang baik sejak pagi.

We still left even though the weather had been poor since morning.
