Indonesian tetapi, tapi, and namun all signal contrast, but register and syntactic level keep them from being freely interchangeable. Tetapi coordinates contrasting material inside a sentence, tapi performs the same job in everyday conversation, and namun normally connects a new sentence to the preceding discourse in careful writing.
This page focuses on coordination and sentence connection. It does not teach conditional systems, discourse sequencing, or lexical prepositions. The key decision is not simply which English word means but; it is whether the contrast lives inside one sentence or begins a new formal discourse unit.
The three-way distinction
| Marker | Usual syntactic level | Register |
|---|---|---|
| tetapi | coordinates phrases, predicates, or clauses inside one sentence | neutral; careful speech and writing |
| tapi | same internal coordination as tetapi | (informal) conversation, messages, dialogue |
| namun | connects a new sentence with the preceding sentence or argument | (formal) essays, reports, news prose |
Kamar itu sederhana tetapi sangat bersih.
The room is simple but very clean.
Aku mau ikut, tapi pekerjaanku belum selesai.
I want to come, but my work isn't finished yet. (informal)
Jumlah pendaftar meningkat. Namun, kapasitas ruang ujian tidak berubah.
The number of applicants increased. However, the capacity of the examination rooms did not change. (formal)
All three examples contrast an expectation. The first two keep the opposing members inside one sentence; the third gives the second claim its own sentence and uses namun to relate it backward.
Tetapi coordinates an internal contrast
Tetapi says that the second member conflicts with, limits, or corrects an expectation raised by the first.
Tas itu ringan tetapi cukup kuat untuk membawa laptop.
The bag is light but strong enough to carry a laptop.
Bima sudah mencoba tetapi belum berhasil membuka kuncinya.
Bima has tried but has not managed to open the lock.
Kami ingin tinggal lebih lama, tetapi penerbangan terakhir berangkat pukul enam.
We want to stay longer, but the last flight leaves at six.
The first joins adjective predicates, the second joins verb phrases under one subject, and the third joins complete clauses. Tetapi does not merely mean that event B happened after event A; it tells the reader to revise an expectation.
Harga makanannya terjangkau, tetapi porsinya lebih kecil daripada tahun lalu.
The food is affordable, but the portions are smaller than last year.
Sinta menerima tawaran itu tetapi meminta waktu satu minggu untuk mulai bekerja.
Sinta accepted the offer but asked for one week before starting work.
Jalannya sempit, tetapi bus besar masih dapat melewatinya.
The road is narrow, but large buses can still pass through it.
Words such as tetap, masih, and juga may reinforce the persistence of the unexpected outcome, but they are not required by tetapi.
Hujan sudah reda, tetapi jalan di bawah jembatan masih tergenang.
The rain has stopped, but the road under the bridge is still flooded.
Reno tidak diundang, tetapi dia datang juga menjelang makan malam.
Reno was not invited, but he came anyway just before dinner.
Tapi carries the contrast into conversation
Tapi is the ordinary shortened form in (informal) speech, personal messages, and represented dialogue. Its syntax remains that of tetapi.
Aku sudah sampai, tapi pintu kantornya masih terkunci.
I've arrived, but the office door is still locked. (informal)
Kopinya enak, tapi terlalu manis buatku.
The coffee is good, but it's too sweet for me. (informal)
Kami bisa menjemputmu, tapi mungkin agak terlambat.
We can pick you up, but we may be a little late. (informal)
Aku ingat wajahnya tapi lupa namanya.
I remember the person's face but forget the name. (informal)
One natural conversational contrast is:
βJadi kita makan di luar?β βMau, tapi hujannya belum berhenti,β jawab Rani.
βSo are we eating out?β βI'd like to, but the rain hasn't stopped,β Rani replied. (conversation)
The dialogue can begin a turn with tapi because spoken turns need not obey formal paragraph architecture. Do not infer that tapi is careless or ungrammatical; it is register-appropriate. The mistake is carrying it into a formal report without a deliberate quotation or conversational voice.
Namun connects sentences and arguments
Namun is an intersentential connector (formal). It normally begins a new sentence and is followed by a comma.
Penelitian awal menunjukkan hasil positif. Namun, jumlah pesertanya masih terlalu kecil.
The preliminary study showed positive results. However, the number of participants is still too small. (academic)
Arus lalu lintas mulai lancar pada siang hari. Namun, dua jalur menuju pusat kota tetap ditutup.
Traffic began moving smoothly at midday. However, two lanes toward the city center remained closed. (news prose)
Perusahaan telah menyampaikan permintaan maaf. Namun, pelanggan masih menunggu penjelasan mengenai kebocoran data.
The company has apologized. However, customers are still waiting for an explanation of the data leak. (formal)
The full stop lets the first assertion stand as a discourse unit. Namun then reorients the reader toward a limitation or counterargument. This gives it more rhetorical weight than an internal coordinator.
Usulan tersebut dapat menekan biaya operasional. Namun, penerapannya memerlukan investasi awal yang besar.
The proposal can reduce operating costs. However, implementing it requires a large initial investment. (essay)
Tim tuan rumah menguasai permainan pada babak pertama. Namun, mereka gagal mencetak gol.
The home team controlled play in the first half. However, they failed to score. (news prose)
Dokumen itu tampak lengkap. Namun demikian, tim verifikasi meminta dua lampiran tambahan.
The document appeared complete. Nevertheless, the verification team requested two additional attachments. (formal)
Namun demikian is a heavier βneverthelessβ frame. It also opens a sentence and takes a comma after the complete connector.
Why namun does not simply replace tetapi
In carefully edited Standard Indonesian, do not place namun between two coordinated words or predicates as though it were tetapi.
Ruangannya kecil tetapi nyaman untuk dua orang.
The room is small but comfortable for two people.
Ruangannya kecil. Namun, tempat itu nyaman untuk dua orang.
The room is small. However, it is comfortable for two people. (formal)
The first builds one compact predicate coordination. The second makes kecil a complete assertion and then adds a formal counterassertion. Phrases such as kecil namun nyaman do occur in advertising and journalistic usage, but the standard syntactic distinction expected in careful edited prose uses tetapi internally and namun across sentences.
Metodenya sederhana tetapi dapat diandalkan.
The method is simple but reliable.
Metodenya sederhana. Namun, hasilnya dapat diandalkan dalam kondisi darurat.
The method is simple. However, its results are reliable in emergency conditions. (formal)
English however can appear in several positions inside a sentence. Indonesian namun is less mobile in the norm taught here.
Contrast strength and information packaging
The strength of a contrast does not come from the marker alone. Lexical choices and separate sentence status matter.
Makanannya sederhana tetapi segar.
The food is simple but fresh.
Makanannya sederhana, tetapi semuanya dimasak setelah dipesan.
The food is simple, but everything is cooked after it is ordered.
Makanannya sederhana. Namun, justru kesederhanaan itu menjadi daya tarik utama restoran tersebut.
The food is simple. However, that very simplicity is the restaurant's main attraction. (formal)
The first is a compact property contrast. The second opposes two full propositions. The third turns the contrast into an argumentative step, strengthened by justru βprecisely/on the contrary.β
Negation can create correction rather than ordinary counterexpectation. After bukan, standard Indonesian often prefers melainkan βbut rather,β not tetapi.
Masalahnya bukan biaya, melainkan waktu pelaksanaan yang terlalu singkat.
The problem is not the cost but rather the implementation period, which is too short.
That correcting pattern belongs to a wider contrast inventory; it is not interchangeable with every tetapi sentence.
Punctuation by syntactic level
In compact phrase or predicate coordination, no comma is needed merely because tetapi occurs.
Buku itu singkat tetapi sangat informatif.
The book is short but highly informative.
When tetapi joins fuller contrasting clauses, a comma normally precedes it.
Kami sudah memesan tempat, tetapi pihak restoran belum mengirim konfirmasi.
We have reserved a table, but the restaurant has not sent confirmation.
When namun opens a new sentence, a full stop precedes it and a comma follows it.
Semua persyaratan telah dipenuhi. Namun, izin operasional belum diterbitkan.
All requirements have been met. However, the operating permit has not been issued. (formal)
Punctuation reflects the boundary. It is not decoration chosen according to pause length. See core punctuation for the full system.
Common Mistakes
1. Placing namun inside a coordinate phrase
β Tas ini ringan namun kuat untuk membawa peralatan.
Nonstandard for the careful syntactic distinction β namun is being used inside a compact predicate coordination.
β Tas ini ringan tetapi kuat untuk membawa semua peralatan.
This bag is light but strong enough to carry all the equipment.
2. Omitting the comma after sentence-initial namun
β Anggarannya telah disetujui. Namun pelaksanaannya masih tertunda.
Incorrect standard punctuation β sentence-connecting Namun is followed by a comma.
β Anggarannya telah disetujui. Namun, pelaksanaannya masih tertunda karena sengketa lahan.
The budget has been approved. However, implementation is still delayed because of a land dispute. (formal)
3. Using tapi in an academic conclusion
β Data ini mendukung hipotesis awal. Tapi, penelitian lanjutan tetap diperlukan.
Register mismatch β tapi is conversational, not the expected connector in an academic conclusion.
β Data ini mendukung hipotesis awal. Namun, penelitian lanjutan tetap diperlukan.
These data support the initial hypothesis. However, further research is still required. (academic)
4. Copying English sentence-initial but into formal prose
β Hasil pertama cukup menjanjikan. Tetapi, sampelnya belum mewakili populasi.
Nonstandard formal organization β coordinating tetapi has been made an intersentential connector.
β Hasil pertama cukup menjanjikan. Namun, sampelnya belum mewakili seluruh populasi.
The initial results are promising. However, the sample does not represent the whole population. (formal)
5. Using a contrast marker where there is no opposition
β Kami membeli beras, tetapi minyak goreng untuk acara itu.
Incorrect relation and structure β the two objects are additions, not a contrast.
β Kami membeli beras dan minyak goreng untuk acara keluarga itu.
We bought rice and cooking oil for the family event.
Key Takeaways
- Use tetapi to coordinate an internal contrast in neutral Indonesian.
- Use tapi for the same relation in informal conversation and personal messages.
- Use sentence-opening Namun, to connect formal sentences and argumentative steps.
- Let punctuation show the syntactic level: compact internal coordination versus a new sentence.
- Do not treat namun as a movable translation of English however or tapi as formal prose decoration.
