atau: Alternatives and Reformulation

Indonesian atau joins alternatives: two things to choose between, two possible explanations, or two formulations of the same idea. Like English or, it does not by itself guarantee whether exactly one alternative or possibly both may apply. Context, intonation, and explicit frames such as salah satu “one of” and atau keduanya “or both” resolve that question.

This page covers phrase and clause alternatives, questions, policy wording, reformulation, and scope. It does not cover full conditional semantics, discourse sequencing, or lexical prepositions. The syntax shared with other coordinators appears in the coordination guide.

Atau fills one grammatical slot with alternatives

The alternatives should be able to occupy the same role in the larger expression.

Anda ingin teh jahe atau kopi hitam?

Would you like ginger tea or black coffee?

Kita bisa bertemu pada Jumat sore atau Sabtu pagi.

We can meet on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

Silakan kirim berkasnya melalui surel atau unggah ke portal pelanggan.

Please send the file by email or upload it to the customer portal.

The alternatives here are two noun phrases, two time phrases, and two predicates. They need not have the same number of words, but their grammatical jobs must be parallel.

Mira mungkin tertidur atau sengaja mematikan teleponnya.

Mira may have fallen asleep or deliberately turned off her phone.

Nomor itu salah atau sudah tidak digunakan lagi.

That number is wrong or is no longer in use.

These are possible explanations rather than instructions to choose. Atau still places them in the same explanatory slot.

💡
Before translating English or, bracket the alternatives: [Jumat sore] atau [Sabtu pagi], [tertidur] atau [mematikan telepon]. If the brackets do not have parallel functions, rewrite the sentence.

Exclusive and inclusive readings come from context

An exclusive reading means exactly one alternative. Menu choices and single-answer instructions often favor it, but make the limit explicit when compliance matters.

Pilih satu lauk: ikan bakar atau ayam panggang.

Choose one side dish: grilled fish or roast chicken.

Setiap kelompok harus menunjuk seorang ketua atau seorang juru bicara.

Each group must appoint a chair or a spokesperson. (normally one role-holder in this context)

Anda dapat memilih pengembalian dana atau penjadwalan ulang, tetapi tidak keduanya.

You may choose a refund or rescheduling, but not both.

An inclusive reading permits either alternative and also someone who meets both descriptions.

Warga yang bekerja atau belajar di luar kota dapat mengajukan izin parkir khusus.

Residents who work or study outside the city may apply for a special parking permit; residents who do both are also included.

Peserta boleh melampirkan foto atau rekaman video sebagai bukti tambahan.

Participants may attach photos or video recordings as additional evidence; the policy may allow either or both.

Pendaftaran terbuka bagi dosen atau peneliti yang masih aktif.

Registration is open to active lecturers or researchers, including someone who belongs to both categories.

The bare coordinator has not changed; real-world compatibility and institutional purpose guide the reading. Formal policies should not force readers to infer a legally important limit.

Pemohon harus menyerahkan paspor atau kartu identitas—salah satu dokumen sudah cukup.

Applicants must submit a passport or an identity card—one document is sufficient.

Pemohon dapat menyerahkan foto, rekaman video, atau keduanya.

Applicants may submit photographs, a video recording, or both.

Dan/atau is common in legal and bureaucratic writing (formal) when inclusion of both possibilities must remain explicit. It is precise in some policies but heavy in ordinary prose.

Pelanggaran dapat dikenai denda dan/atau pembekuan izin.

A violation may be subject to a fine and/or suspension of the permit. (formal legal wording)

Whenever possible, wording such as salah satu atau keduanya is easier for a general audience.

Choice questions and intonation

In speech, intonation and context distinguish a request to choose from a yes–no question containing alternatives. In writing, parallel structure and a question mark do most of that work.

Mau duduk di dalam atau di teras?

Do you want to sit inside or on the terrace? (informal choice question)

Apakah Ibu akan membayar tunai atau menggunakan kartu?

Will you pay in cash or use a card? (polite choice question)

Kita berangkat sekarang atau menunggu hujan reda?

Are we leaving now or waiting for the rain to stop?

Rapatnya dipindahkan ke ruang besar atau tetap di sini?

Has the meeting been moved to the large room, or is it staying here?

Speakers often give the first alternative nonfinal intonation and let the final alternative carry the question contour. The words stay unchanged.

A yes–no question can contain an atau phrase without asking the listener to select exactly one item:

Apakah Anda memiliki paspor yang masih berlaku atau kartu identitas yang masih berlaku?

Do you have a valid passport or a valid identity card? (yes–no eligibility question)

The expected answer may simply be ya or tidak. A service worker can add Yang mana? only after learning that the customer has one.

Paired frames clarify the alternatives

Indonesian often adds a frame instead of translating English either word for word.

Pilih salah satu: ambil penerbangan pagi atau tunggu sampai malam.

Choose one: take the morning flight or wait until evening.

Entah sopirnya salah jalan atau aplikasi petanya belum diperbarui.

Either the driver took a wrong turn or the map app had not been updated.

Saya belum tahu apakah paket itu tertahan di gudang atau sudah dikirim kembali.

I don't yet know whether the parcel is being held at the warehouse or has already been sent back.

Entah ... atau ... presents unresolved alternatives, not a command to choose. Apakah ... atau ... embeds or asks a question. For stronger coordination, ataupun is an attached spelling containing fixed -pun and is frequent in careful or formal phrasing.

Keluhan dapat disampaikan secara lisan ataupun tertulis.

Complaints may be submitted orally or in writing. (formal)

Dengan alasan apa pun, secara sengaja ataupun tidak, data itu tidak boleh disebarkan.

For any reason, whether intentionally or not, the data must not be distributed. (formal)

Do not write atau pun for this conventional conjunction. By contrast, freely emphatic pun may be separate in other constructions; those uses belong to the particle guide.

💡
English either has no single automatic Indonesian equivalent. Use salah satu for an exclusive choice, entah for unresolved possibilities, and no extra word when plain atau is already clear.

Reformulation: “or rather”

Atau can replace the first formulation with a more accurate one. The second phrase does not present another real-world option; it repairs how the speaker described the same thing.

Rapat dimulai pukul delapan, atau lebih tepatnya pukul delapan lewat sepuluh menit.

The meeting began at eight—or, more precisely, at ten past eight.

Dia bekerja sebagai penerjemah, atau lebih tepatnya penyunting terjemahan hukum.

She works as a translator—or rather, as an editor of legal translations.

Kami bermalam di rumah singgah, atau mungkin lebih tepat disebut pondok sederhana.

We spent the night in a guesthouse—or perhaps it would be more accurate to call it a simple hut.

Saya tiba hari Rabu, atau sebenarnya Kamis dini hari.

I arrived on Wednesday—or actually, early Thursday morning.

Commas or a dash can show that the repair interrupts the main sentence. Lebih tepatnya makes replacement explicit; bare atau relies more heavily on self-correcting intonation.

Scope: what exactly are the alternatives?

Placement determines how much material belongs to each alternative.

Kami dapat membatalkan pesanan atau mengubah alamat pengirimannya.

We can cancel the order or change its delivery address.

Kami dapat membatalkan pesanan sekarang atau mengubah alamatnya besok.

We can cancel the order now, or change its address tomorrow.

Manajer tidak menandatangani atau mengirim kontrak itu.

The manager did not sign or send the contract; in the broad-scope reading, neither action occurred.

The last sentence commonly lets initial tidak cover both coordinated predicates, but important writing should avoid logical uncertainty:

Manajer tidak menandatangani kontrak itu dan juga tidak mengirimkannya.

The manager did not sign the contract and did not send it either.

Manajer menandatangani kontrak itu, tetapi tidak mengirimkannya.

The manager signed the contract but did not send it.

Repeating the negation or stating the positive contrast makes scope visible.

Punctuation

Do not place a comma between two compact alternatives.

Silakan pilih ukuran sedang atau besar.

Please choose a medium or large size.

Use commas in a series of three or more and before the final atau.

Jawaban dapat dikirim melalui surat, surel, atau formulir daring.

Responses may be sent by post, email, or an online form.

A comma may appear before atau when it introduces a parenthetical reformulation, but that is a different structure from a simple choice. See punctuation for the general list rules.

Common Mistakes

1. Assuming every atau excludes both

❌ Pegawai yang kuliah atau bekerja paruh waktu harus memilih hanya satu status.

Incorrect inference — atau in the eligibility description does not itself exclude people with both statuses.

✅ Pegawai yang kuliah, bekerja paruh waktu, atau melakukan keduanya wajib melaporkan jadwalnya.

Employees who study, work part-time, or do both must report their schedule.

2. Translating English either with baik

❌ Anda dapat baik membayar tunai atau menggunakan kartu.

Incorrect calque — baik ... maupun means both ... and, not either ... or.

✅ Anda dapat membayar tunai atau menggunakan kartu debit.

You can pay in cash or use a debit card.

3. Separating the fixed conjunction ataupun

❌ Permohonan dapat diajukan secara daring atau pun langsung.

Incorrect spelling for the conventional coordinator ataupun.

✅ Permohonan dapat diajukan secara daring ataupun langsung di kantor layanan.

Applications may be submitted online or directly at the service office. (formal)

4. Adding a comma in a simple two-way choice

❌ Anda ingin kamar dengan sarapan, atau tanpa sarapan?

Incorrect neutral punctuation — two compact alternatives take no comma.

✅ Anda ingin kamar dengan sarapan atau tanpa sarapan?

Would you like a room with breakfast or without breakfast?

5. Leaving negative scope unresolved

❌ Sinta tidak menyetujui atau membaca laporan itu, tetapi kami tidak tahu tindakan mana yang terjadi.

Unclear — the sentence does not reveal whether neither action occurred or only one failed to occur.

✅ Sinta membaca laporan itu, tetapi tidak menyetujui isinya.

Sinta read the report but did not agree with its contents.

Key Takeaways

  • Atau coordinates alternatives but does not encode exclusive versus inclusive logic by itself.
  • Use salah satu, atau keduanya, or explicit policy wording when the distinction matters.
  • Intonation and frames such as apakah ... atau ... and entah ... atau ... clarify alternative questions and uncertainty.
  • Atau lebih tepatnya introduces a self-correction rather than another option.
  • Write conventional ataupun and maupun as single words, and make negation scope explicit in important prose.
