Coordination joins constituents of equal status: word with word, phrase with phrase, or clause with clause. Indonesian dan, atau, tetapi, and formal serta do not merely connect meanings. Smooth coordination depends on the joined units having parallel syntactic functions.
This page analyzes that parallelism and the material that coordinated constituents can share. It does not repeat basic word-order drills, affix formation, or particle pragmatics.
The constituency guide supplies the phrase boundaries needed to identify complete conjuncts.
First identify the coordinated constituent
The same coordinator can operate at different structural levels.
Rani dan Yusuf menjaga meja informasi.
Rani and Yusuf are staffing the information desk.
Kami membeli mangga matang dan jeruk manis.
We bought ripe mangoes and sweet oranges.
Ruang itu tenang dan cukup sejuk.
The room is quiet and cool enough.
Tari membuka pintu dan Arif membawa semua kotak ke dalam.
Tari opened the door, and Arif carried all the boxes inside.
The coordinated units are two proper-name noun phrases, two larger noun phrases, two adjective phrases, and two clauses. Their translations all contain English and, but their Indonesian structures are not identical.
Word and phrase coordination
Addition with dan
Dan neutrally adds compatible members.
Kami membutuhkan kertas dan tinta untuk mesin cetak.
We need paper and ink for the printer.
Pemandangan dari bukit itu luas dan sangat indah.
The view from the hill is expansive and very beautiful.
Mereka bekerja cepat dan tanpa banyak suara.
They work quickly and without making much noise.
The last sentence coordinates the one-word manner expression cepat with the prepositional phrase tanpa banyak suara. Their internal categories differ, but both function as manner adjuncts. Category matching is the strongest and clearest form of parallelism, yet matching syntactic function can sometimes license coordination across categories.
Alternatives with atau
Atau joins alternatives occupying the same structural slot.
Anda dapat membayar dengan kartu atau melalui transfer bank.
You may pay by card or through bank transfer.
Kita bisa bertemu besok pagi atau setelah makan siang.
We can meet tomorrow morning or after lunch.
Pilih kursi dekat jendela atau kursi di baris depan.
Choose a seat near the window or a seat in the front row.
The alternatives need not have equal length, but each must be able to fill the same position in the larger expression.
Contrast with tetapi
Tetapi connects members whose contrast matters to the assertion.
Kamarnya kecil tetapi sangat nyaman.
The room is small but very comfortable.
Rudi sudah mencoba tetapi belum berhasil membuka berkas itu.
Rudi has tried but has not succeeded in opening that file.
Kami ingin membantu, tetapi waktunya sangat terbatas.
We want to help, but our time is very limited.
The first two coordinate predicates under one subject. The third joins complete clauses and takes a comma before tetapi.
Formal addition with serta
Serta is frequent in formal lists and institutional prose. It often accompanies the final member of a series.
Laporan tersebut memuat tujuan, metode, temuan, serta rekomendasi.
The report contains objectives, methods, findings, and recommendations. (formal)
Peserta wajib membawa kartu identitas serta bukti pendaftaran.
Participants must bring identification and proof of registration. (formal)
Direktur menyetujui anggaran serta menandatangani jadwal pelaksanaan.
The director approved the budget and signed the implementation schedule. (formal)
Serta does not make nonparallel members grammatical. It is a register choice within an already licensed coordination.
Sharing one subject across predicates
When one subject fills the same subject role in several conjuncts, it is normally stated once.
Lina mengunci lemari dan mematikan lampu sebelum pulang.
Lina locked the cabinet and turned off the light before going home.
Para relawan membongkar paket, memeriksa isinya, dan mencatat kerusakan.
The volunteers unpacked the parcels, checked their contents, and recorded the damage.
Saya tidak menelepon atau mengirim pesan selama rapat.
I did not call or send messages during the meeting.
The predicates share Lina, para relawan, or saya. The initial negation in the third sentence can take scope over the coordinated predicate menelepon atau mengirim pesan.
If the subject changes, express it:
Lina mengunci lemari dan Bima mematikan lampu sebelum mereka pulang.
Lina locked the cabinet, and Bima turned off the light before they left.
Rapat selesai, tetapi beberapa peserta masih menunggu taksi.
The meeting ended, but several participants were still waiting for taxis.
Omitting Bima or beberapa peserta would incorrectly make the first subject continue into the second predicate.
Sharing an object or complement
Coordinated predicates can share a following argument when every predicate selects it in the same grammatical role.
Petugas membuka dan memeriksa semua koper besar.
The officer opened and inspected all the large suitcases.
Kami membaca serta membandingkan kedua proposal tersebut.
We read and compared the two proposals. (formal)
Dara mencari tetapi belum menemukan nomor pemesanan itu.
Dara looked for but has not yet found that booking number.
Semua koper besar, kedua proposal tersebut, and nomor pemesanan itu can serve as object of both preceding predicates. The voice and valency match.
A shared prepositional phrase is possible when its relation fits both predicates:
Mereka belajar dan berdiskusi di perpustakaan sampai malam.
They studied and discussed in the library until evening.
Nina berbicara dan bercanda dengan para tamu.
Nina talked and joked with the guests.
Do not force sharing across verbs with different complement requirements.
Rafi tinggal di Semarang dan bekerja untuk perusahaan logistik.
Rafi lives in Semarang and works for a logistics company.
The distinct phrases di Semarang and untuk perusahaan logistik must remain with their respective predicates.
Parallel voice supports clear sharing
Parallel voice keeps the same argument prominent across conjuncts.
Tim hukum menelaah kontrak dan menyusun daftar perubahan.
The legal team reviewed the contract and drew up a list of changes.
Kontrak ditelaah dan daftar perubahan disusun oleh tim hukum.
The contract was reviewed and the list of changes was drawn up by the legal team.
Each sentence maintains one voice orientation. A voice change is grammatical when both clauses are fully expressed, but it blocks easy sharing.
Tim hukum menelaah kontrak, tetapi keputusan akhir ditunda oleh direksi.
The legal team reviewed the contract, but the final decision was postponed by the board.
Here the actor-voice first clause and passive second clause have distinct subjects. The comma and tetapi make the boundary explicit. Do not treat tim hukum as a shared actor of ditunda.
Ellipsis and gapping
Coordination can omit a repeated predicate from the second clause when two contrast pairs make it recoverable.
Sinta memilih kereta pagi, sedangkan Damar memilih bus malam.
Sinta chose the morning train, whereas Damar chose the night bus.
Sinta memilih kereta pagi, sedangkan Damar bus malam.
Sinta chose the morning train, whereas Damar chose the night bus. (formal, elliptical)
The pairs Sinta/Damar and kereta pagi/bus malam allow readers to restore memilih.
Cabang utara mencapai target, sedangkan cabang selatan belum.
The northern branch reached its target, whereas the southern branch did not.
Harga paket pertama tiga ratus ribu rupiah, sedangkan paket kedua dua ratus lima puluh ribu.
The first package costs three hundred thousand rupiah, whereas the second costs two hundred fifty thousand.
Gapping is most comfortable in concise comparisons and formal prose. If the predicates or argument roles differ, repeat them.
Nadia mengirim laporan kepada manajer, sedangkan Budi menerima kuitansi dari kasir.
Nadia sent a report to the manager, whereas Budi received a receipt from the cashier.
Neither mengirim nor menerima can be omitted and recovered as the other.
Unlike categories and deceptive translation
English may translate different Indonesian structures with parallel-looking words. Coordination still requires a shared syntactic slot.
Pekerjaan itu membutuhkan ketelitian dan bekerja tanpa tergesa-gesa.
The job requires accuracy and working without rushing. (nonparallel)
The first object is a noun, while the second begins a verbal clause. A clean repair coordinates nouns or verbal descriptions:
Pekerjaan itu membutuhkan ketelitian dan kesabaran.
The job requires accuracy and patience.
Pekerjaan itu menuntut pekerja agar teliti dan tidak tergesa-gesa.
The job requires workers to be careful and not rush.
Cross-category coordination is not universally impossible: cepat dan tanpa suara coordinates two manner adjuncts. The warning is against assuming that matching English translations guarantee matching Indonesian functions.
Modifier scope
A final modifier can attach only to the nearest conjunct or to the whole coordination.
Yuni menyiapkan bahan dan memasak sup tadi malam.
Yuni prepared the ingredients and cooked soup last night; the time phrase may cover both events or only the cooking.
Front the modifier to make shared scope clear:
Tadi malam, Yuni menyiapkan bahan dan memasak sup untuk tetangganya.
Last night, Yuni prepared the ingredients and cooked soup for her neighbor.
Repeat or contrast modifiers for separate scope:
Yuni menyiapkan bahan sore tadi dan memasak sup malam ini.
Yuni prepared the ingredients this afternoon and is cooking the soup tonight.
Noun modifiers can create similar ambiguity.
Panitia mengundang dokter dan perawat baru.
The committee invited doctors and new nurses; baru may or may not include the doctors.
Panitia mengundang para dokter baru dan semua perawat lama.
The committee invited the new doctors and all the senior nurses.
Punctuation
Do not insert a comma between only two short coordinated words or phrases.
Kami membawa lampu dan baterai cadangan.
We brought a flashlight and spare batteries.
Use commas in a series of three or more and before the final coordinator:
Kotak itu berisi kabel, adaptor, buku petunjuk, dan kartu garansi.
The box contains cables, an adapter, an instruction manual, and a warranty card.
Use a comma before clause-level tetapi and normally no comma before a compact two-member dan/atau coordination. A comma cannot replace a coordinator between two independent clauses.
Common Mistakes
Coordinating unlike objects because English aligns
β Tugas saya mencakup pemeriksaan data dan menjawab telepon.
Faulty parallelism β pemeriksaan is a noun while menjawab telepon is a verb phrase.
β Tugas saya mencakup pemeriksaan data dan penanganan panggilan telepon.
My duties include checking data and handling phone calls.
Omitting a subject that changes
β Ibu menyiapkan makan malam dan mencuci piring Kakak.
Wrong for the intended meaning βMother prepared dinner and my older sibling washed the dishesβ; omission makes Mother the actor of both.
β Ibu menyiapkan makan malam dan Kakak mencuci piring.
Mother prepared dinner, and my older sibling washed the dishes.
Sharing an incompatible complement
β Deni tinggal dan bekerja perusahaan ekspor itu.
Incorrect β tinggal and bekerja do not share that bare complement.
β Deni tinggal di Depok dan bekerja untuk perusahaan ekspor itu.
Deni lives in Depok and works for that export company.
Gapping a different predicate
β Mira membawa payung, sedangkan Riko hujan.
Incorrect β no parallel predicate can be recovered for Riko hujan.
β Mira membawa payung, sedangkan Riko memakai jas hujan.
Mira brought an umbrella, whereas Riko wore a raincoat.
Adding a comma in a two-item phrase
β Kami memesan nasi, dan sayur untuk makan siang.
Incorrect punctuation β two compact object nouns take no comma.
β Kami memesan nasi dan sayur untuk makan siang.
We ordered rice and vegetables for lunch.
Key Takeaways
- Coordination is licensed by parallel category or, in some cases, parallel syntactic function.
- Share a subject, object, or complement only when it has the same role in every conjunct.
- Parallel voice makes sharing transparent; a voice change requires fuller expression.
- Gapping needs clear contrasting pairs and is most natural in concise comparisons.
- Punctuation reflects constituent size and relation, not the mere presence of a coordinator.
